Our group of eight senior citizens arrived in Paris on the day before the cruise started. This gave us time to see a bit of the city, enjoy a relaxing dinner near our hotel, and get a little rest before we left on the cruise. We were picked up and taken to the ship, where we had lunch. Our cruise directors arranged for taxi service and we spent the afternoon at the Arc de Triomphe. When we returned to the ship just before sailing time, our luggage had been delivered to our cabins. We unpacked and watched the city float by. The cabins are compact, but well designed to accommodate everything we brought with us. We enjoyed the large windows and the little touches of luxury - Loccitane bath products and the “fire” on our room TV wheN we went to bed each night. The food was delicious and varied and the service was wonderful. We had the same servers throughout the trip and they very quickly learned our eating and drinking preferences and often anticipated our requests. We also loved the warm towels and fruit infused drinks that greeted us when we returned to the ship after excursions. Every part of the ship was spotless and felt comfortable and even homey. The ship docked at places which made the various excursions accessible without spending hours on a bus. The guides were knowledgeable and interesting. They also were very helpful. Our guide in Rouen went out of her way to find a weekend Mass that fit in with our itinerary. The cruise director was readily available and kept us informed of schedules, special activities, and where we needed to be. We focused most of our time on the various excursions, so we were not on the ship for most of the day. We did however, participate in a few activities and enjoyed them. We especially liked a lecture on WWII on the evening before we visited the D Day landing beaches. There was a piano player/singer who entertained in the lounge most evenings. We found him to be pleasant, but we actually were not in the lounge all that much. I would not say that this cruise was geared to children. There was only one child on the cruise and he did not seem happy most of the time. There were no child specific activities. After our cruise ended we spent three days in London. We were transported from the ship to the Eurostar train and the transition went very smoothly. I would definitely use the Avalon Cruise Line again. I recommend it highly. Read Less

Chose Avalon again because of the classy way they handled the low water situation on the Rhine when we went last year and were sure their professionalism and high quality would not disappoint...and they did not! We love Avalon's staterooms and their well organized shore trips as well as the quality of the staff, food...I guess everything! We traveled with my 80+ year old parents who are still very spry (my husband and I are 57 and 61) and the pace of the trip was great for all of us. We enjoyed the combination of busy shore tripping with leisurely cruising along the Seine when we could enjoy the ship and the scenery. We chose the Seine because of the opportunity to visit the beaches, Giverny, the little towns along the way and of course, Paris. The Seine trip is nice as, apart from the unavoidable long drive to the Normandy beach memorials, the shore excursions did not require much in the way of buses. Besides the WWII memorial trip, the only trip that was longer was the optional trip to Honfluers, and that was only 45 mins, I believe. We loved the ability to explore the towns and leisurely walk back to the ship ourselves. The local guides were very good. We especially liked the ones who grew up in the towns we visited and told us cute stories of their experiences. We really enjoyed the onboard crepe lunch and pastry demonstration, both very fun and resulting in delicious treats to eat while enjoying the cruise. Cruise Director Gail was exceptional as well. She was warm, funny, organized and just all around a wonderful director. Because of her shopping guidance in Rouen, I came home with significantly heavier luggage and fewer euros! My parents, when arriving on the Tapestry II, both commented how it was like being at your favorite vacation home! We stayed a couple of extra days in Paris post-cruise, and we stayed at a lovely 4+ star hotel, yet my mom commented, "if this is a 4+ star hotel, then the Avalon is a 7 star!" I think that sums up the service and quality. And one last thing...my parents fell in love with Edourd in the dining room and insisted on getting to dinner asap so that we could sit in his section. We chose this ship for its itinerary on the Seine. We were truly looking forward to Vernon and Monet's Garden, which was spectacular, but we fell in love with every inch of France we saw!! Avalon knows how to treat passengers like royalty. From the captain to the chamber maids this crew was exceptionally talented at their job and very eager to assist passengers in any way possible. The cruise director works for a different company, and while she was pleasant enough I felt she had no empathy, and lacked a bit in the customer service area. Unfortunately I became ill on an excursion, and was essentially abandoned. When we did get back to the ship we had to seek her out. It was hours later, and she didn't call, come by the cabin, or leave a note. This ship is clean and beautiful. Every single morsel of food was delicious! Everything was absolutely first class. We stayed in a smaller cabin on Indigo deck, and it was roomier than we'd find on an ocean cruise, and nicely appointed. The bed was roomy and very comfortable. We would most definitely recommend this cruise and would definitely sail with Avalon again. Read Less

I chose this cruise because Avalon waived the single supplement which saved me quite a bit of money. The cruise itself was fantastic. I liked my room which was plenty big enough for me and the bathroom was a nice size. The food was excellent and the land tours were led by enthusiastic and informative guides.I had flown into Paris the day before the cruise, and made my own hotel arrangements for that part of the trip. I'd advise anyone to have an extra day in Paris. I really enjoyed the tour of Normandy and the optionals to Honfleur and Versailles, although Versailles was super crowded. I was so impressed with Avalon that I have already booked a trip in 2020 with them. There was a nice lounge area on the back of deck three where you could get all sorts of coffee and pastry as well as hot chocolate. Read Less

We chose this cruise initially because we were attracted to the itinerary which included Monet and Van Gogh homes and the Normandy beach Memorials. We chose Avalon because the rooms were spacious and bed faced out on sliding doors instead of balconies limiting inside space. We were so pleasantly surprised! All of the cruise employees spoke English, were very pleasant and helpful and spent their day making sure everything was well taken care of. Our cruise director Jean Loup was always available, and coordinated all of the excursions with attention to detail to assure that we arrived early so that we dodged the crowds and all of the guides were knowledgeable and pleasant! To the very last day even when we left the ship he worked tirelessly to make sure all went smoothly! Our room was just as advertised, it and the ship were immaculately clean, the food was outstanding and the ride was smooth as silk! Special shout out to Octavian, Simone, Valentin, and George on the wait staff they were always there if we needed something! Our only negatives were not against Avalon. France as is much of Europe is not an accessible trip, it is difficult at times to navigate, though Avalon did twice hook us up with so all trolleys which got us to the top of Etratat’ and to the top of Montmartre, which we would have never seen otherwise! And, Paris was like any Metropolitan City difficult on your own (when you are of a certain age). All in all Thank you Avalon for making our trip the best it could be! Read Less

Delicious food, wonderful service, gorgeous boat and well planned trip from Paris to Normandy! A week in heaven! Each excursion was well Planned .... met a monk in Monastery, Givenchy to see Monet’s gardens, castle of Lionheart, Normandy beaches and so much more! The meals were eloquent five course meals. Small boat so we made lots of friends. Sunsets on sky deck was the perfect ending to your busy day! We grew very attached to the staff with lots of ice cream and wine. Beautiful arrangement of fruit waiting for us upon check in. Our suite was throughly cleaned every day. The captain gave my dad a special tour of engine room and wheelhouse with explanation of locks. Cookies and Snacks and coffee 24 / 7. We lacked for nothing and were spoiled royally! The tours had wonderful and knowledgeable guides. We had air conditioned buses filled with water. Head sets and microphones made the tours easy to understand and navigate. We learned so much! Read Less

I chose this cruise because I had great interest in Normandy. Our ship departed from Paris & we had planned on spending 2 days before boarding to explore the city. I am very glad that we did! Paris is a delightful way to start our trip. Embarkation was easy & our stateroom was perfect & our friendly attendant was helpful and kept our cabin neat. Our meals were thought out & the accompanying wine was perfect and plentiful. This was not our first river cruise with Avalon and all that we had come to expect was even better! The Tapestry11 is a well laid out ship, with convenience & comfort in mind. Evenings were spent listening to a wonderful keyboard player and dancing the night away. The crew was wonderful and thoughtful and friendly. Our captain was hands on and open to all our questions. He mixed with guests frequently making everyone feel special. The shore excursions were interesting and our guide was knowledgeable. I would definitely take this cruise again! Read Less

My husband, son, daughter-in-law and myself all thought the trip was great. My son and his wife had never taken a river cruise and I wasn't sure they would like it. But they found their own enjoyment and had a ball. The food was terrific, the rooms, although not large were very nice. The staff, including the captain and the cruise director were exceptional. We joked that every where you looked the captain was there. He was there greeting you when you left the ship and when you returned. And finally the stops were, especially for someone who appreciates art, top notch. Monet's gardens were beautiful. In Rouen it was great to see the Cathedral that Monet painted multiple times. But of course one of the reasons we selected the trip was the day in Normandy which did not disappoint. It was beautiful, thoughtful and a tribute to the thousands who were buried there. This was our first Avalon cruise, but it won't be our last. Read Less

I would definitely recommend Avalon Cruise Seine River Cruise! I have always wanted to see the Beaches at Normandy & the American Cemetery, being there on the 4th of July made it even more special. That morning our dining area was decorated for the 4th of July - very thoughtful - the chef even made us a flag cake for dessert that night! Because of my budget, I chose the least expensive cabin & it was perfect - plenty of room - I didn't care about the view because I could go on deck for the view. The ship was immaculate, the food was delicious and the crew spoiled us. Gail was our cruise director - she was excellent! The evening entertainment was great - different every night, covering all interests. I really appreciated all of the crew members who helped to spoil us & kept us laughing! The group who served us both in the dining room & the bar are very hard workers & I want to acknowledge all of them. The transfers went very smoothly. I liked all of the excursions & the tour guides were very knowledgeable & proud of the cities we toured. I just can't say enough about this trip! I would do it again. I would recommend 2 days in Paris either before or after the cruise. I would NOT recommend staying at eh Pullman Hotel! It was very clean but the staff their was rude & less than helpful. Read Less

I picked an early (cheaper) date, but late enough to hopefully have good weather. Hit a home run. The extra day pre-cruise hotel was in a great location. All transfers went smoothly. The staff on the cruise was very friendly and competent. The food and whole dining experience was outstanding. Excellent selection and quality. The excursions were varied and had well-informed guides. We were docked on the Seine a distance away from the landing beaches, so that day had some time taken up by bus rides to and from the coast and to and from the lunch area. The cabin was nice, but I was not in it that much. Easy train ride to London. Another centrally-located hotel. Again, good sight-seeing smoothly and professionally arranged. All in all, this was twelve days with all kinds of history seen in a comfortable and pleasant way. I would recommend this company without reservation. Read Less

Friends highly recommended Avalon Waterways. We arrived in Paris and were brought directly to our ship. After checking in we were able to walk to the Eiffel Tower for a few photos. The ship was very nice. Our cabin was spacious and clean. I thought the food was good. We ate the majority of our lunches and dinners on the panoramic deck. Fellow travelers were pleasant and welcoming. Entertainment was enjoyable. I enjoyed almost all of the land excursions. I would have liked less bus travel. The guides were informative and accommodating. The London leg of the trip was disappointing. The city tour was rushed. Our hotel room was small, dark and the bathroom smelled like cigarettes. The only window in the room overlooked the dining room. The room lighting was very poor. Opening the drapes exposed us to the diners below and the rooms across the "courtyard." The only chair in the room was falling apart. Our fellow travelers had suites. Why the accommodations were not equitable for all of us is a mystery to me. Avalon needs to think twice about using Monogram as part of their cruise packages. VERY DISAPPOINTED! Read Less

This was our first-ever river cruise. MUCH prefer the small ship experience to the big cruise ships. The Avalon Paris-Normandy trip itinerary was appealing, especially since my husband is a WWII buff. I really loved the visits to the Monet and Van Gogh home sites. Each stop was fascinating, however. Thoroughly enjoyed every single day! Avalon's service is superb. Cannot say enough good things about the dining and bar wait staff - excellent. Our dining room waiter Andre was charming and super attentive. Marie in the bar knew what we drank and was always a sweetheart. The cruise director Tony was also top notch. No request was too much. He went out of his way to ensure the ship's passengers were happy. The tour guides each day were also extremely impressive; very knowledgeable, organized, and accommodating. And I forgot the food. Very good!! Fresh, creative, and very tasty. One night my husband noted that his portion of lamb seemed small and was quickly offered a double portion, no problem. One criticism: The day trip to Normandy beaches was very rushed. Understandably difficult, since getting there takes 1.5 hours each way. But perhaps instead of a formal lunch, which ate into the day, I would recommend a quick box lunch. Realistically, it would be much better to extend Normandy into a two-day experience. There is so much to see - the one-day tour is but a little taste of what that area offers. But overall, we had an absolutely AMAZING trip. I highly recommend Avalon Waterways, without reservation. They are excellent in pretty much every area. Hard to beat! Read Less

We chose this Avalon Waterways cruise for three main reasons. Avalon Tapestry II's elegant accommodations, the professionalism of Avalon Waterways team members, and a desire to see some of northern France. We were on a previous Avalon Waterways cruise several years ago and were very impressed with the cleanliness of the ships, the crew (friendly, helpful, always aiming to please so that you have a great vacation experience), and of course, the food ... WOW ... delicious every time! So, with this latest Avalon Waterways cruise that we took on the Seine in France, we were happy to experience another consistently excellent cruise! We were very pleased precautions were taken to ensure the health of the passengers. It is so easy (as you may have read in the news) for health issues to arise whilst on board a ship, due to the close proximity of everyone. Thankfully we have no such worries while cruising with Avalon Waterways. Well done, Avalon Waterways! Read Less

Embarkation and disembarkation could NOT have gone smoother, with the Avalon staff meeting us immediately upon arrival, and seeing us off after the cruise. The ship, Tapestry II is a cozy and comfortable modern home away from home. The cabin and amenities were top notch. Dining was a pleasant experience at EVERY meal with fine food, and a wonderfully attentive staff. Our galley tour was eye opening, and a marvel to behold. Shore excursions were as advertised, with an emphasis on explanations of the sites, a fine selection of sites, knowledgeable, and friendly local tour guides. Our transfer to the airport was professionally handled, with our cruise director making sure that we saw that our luggage was totally on the van. We met many of the other people on board, and they were extremely pleasant. Casual dress was a definite plus, and not a gown or sport jacket were necessary. We would definitely cruise Avalon again. My wife andI have made many ocean and river cruises. Our latest trip on the Avalon Tapestry II has been the best ever. The route is Paris to Normandy with many charming and informative stops. The guides provided by Avalon were without exception top flight. The only negative was the 5 hour round trip on a bus to get to Omaha Beach. Listening devices were provided fo all guided tours and they worked marvelously l. The personnel on this ship are extraordinarily thoughtful. The food is as good as Oceania and special effort is made to cater to special diets. All the public spaces are well maintained and put the passenger at ease. Our room was well designed with plenty of closet and shelf space. The bathroom was smallish but well designed, with a great deal of space to lay out personal items. Because we booked late we had a room with just a high, not full, window. But there were plenty of comfortable chairs on the upper deck, and the windows in the interior public areas provided a full view of the passing shore line. The cruise director provided a lot of good information without the false heartiness so many of that breed are prone to. The dress code was very relaxed without a sports jacket in sight. Read Less

The tour guides were very dedicated and informative. Our cruise director Jean Loup took very good care of us and was always there to patiently answer any questions from us passengers. The food was outstanding and the wine was excellent and plentiful. The bar had several happy hour nights with drinks at half price but the full price drinks were very reasonably priced. There is always complimentary coffee, tea, and cappuccino. Our cabin was outstanding with plenty of room in the bath and our studio. We spend some of our time on the river taking in the amazing scenery. We had the huge sliding door open sitting on the couch and chair with our feet on the rail sipping a glass of wine. Avalon Waterways was highly recommended by our travel agent and she was not wrong! We chose this itinerary as we wanted to visit the D-Day beaches but there was so much more to enjoy. We were met by an Avalon rep at the airport in Paris, who transported us to the ship. The ship was docked about a block away from the Eiffel Tower - lovely surprise. We were able to board immediately, check-in, and leave our bags securely. We wandered the walkway along the Seine, returned to the ship for a great lunch, and then spent the afternoon visiting the Tower. Rooms were ready by 4, happy hour began at 5, dinner was at 7. Our stateroom was larger than expected, as was the bathroom as well (with L'Occitane amenities!). Loved the option of sitting anywhere in the dining room - we met so many lovely people. Every meal was excellent, as were the accompanying wines and service. Some days, lighter options were available in the lounge. Every crew member was friendly and accommodating, we lacked for nothing. Evening entertainment was enjoyable, and we very much appreciated the afternoons we were cruising and could watch the river go by. Sooo relaxing in between the days of touring. Every tour was excellent, led by very informative local guides. The only thing we wished for was more time at Pointe du Hoc - so much more to see than than an hour allowed. For our last two nights, we were docked again in view of the Eiffel Tower, which we could watch "glitter: at night from the decks.. Beautiful finish to a memorable trip Read Less

I had moderate expectations for this cruise, and I must say, they were all blown out of the water! We were allowed to board any time on our embarkation day. A fabulous lunch was ready for us while we waited for access to our cabins around 3:30. We stayed in a Panorama Suite and considering we are two females who like to have room to comfortably get ready, we were in good shape! As long as you're organized, the room is very accommodating and - THAT VIEW! We loved having a panoramic view of the gorgeous scenery. The ship is new (2015) and in excellent shape. STAFF - all were amazing! Captain Rudy was VERY present throughout our entire cruise, and even danced with some of us after dinner in the lounge! Cruise Director Jean-Loup was HILARIOUS and extremely knowledgable, we could go to him about anything! The servers, bartenders, housekeepers, desk staff etc were all also incredible. We felt so well taken care of. FOOD - very accommodating! I don't do much dairy or any meat/fish, and the Maitre D'/Head Chef were always sure to check in and offer me something custom-made. They even made me a vegan birthday cake for my birthday! They really do keep the wine flowing during dinner, too! EXCURSIONS - I recommend going on an excursion in every city! We LOVED Honfleur, Auvers Sur Oise, Versaille, Landing Beaches at Normandy (very emotional), Rouen... they were all FANTASTIC.
