Loved this stress free way of seeing Europe. Let someone else do all the hard work! We got to choose when to tour and when to stay aboard the ship. We unpacked in a great cabin for two weeks. We ate amazing meals and snacks. We toured a good variety of towns, cities, cathedrals and castles all with amazing and helpful guides. The ship, staff and crew were all top notch and helpful. What a great trip! We especially loved clean and beautiful Vienna. Language was never an issue because so many people in Europe speak English. When we needed Euros the ship had a reasonable 5% exchange rate. We packed light, a carry on size suitcase for each of us, using compression bags from Amazon and light weight knit clothing that we layered. We washed and dried a few pieces in the cabin using shampoo. Wonderful bath products and hair dryers are provided. We highly recommend Emerald Waterways and especially the Emerald Star. Read Less

My mum-in-law asked for this trip & what fun we 3 had- We were river rat virgins & look forward to the next one! The ship & cabins were stunning & pristine, dining delicious & imaginative. The entertainment was fun for all ages (21 to 81!) & the crew show not to be missed! We loved that we got to know the staff & they made efforts to get to know us & our preferences. My husband's birthday surprise was really well done. We did as many shore excursions as possible & loved the humorous history. The bike trip was very active & thank you for giving us speed choice in walking tours. We made lots of new friends & hope to visit with again. (Please start A loyalty program!) We appreciated minimal broadcasted announcements. Embarkation & disembarkation was super easy. We should have gone a day early to enjoy a Budapest thermal bath but did explore Nuremberg city center & War Memorial the last day of cruise & take a train to see/ sleep Munich & fly home. Read Less

River cruising is just wonderful and whilst some aspects of the emerald sky cruise were great it wasnt always 5 star service and some of the trips/entertainments were changed. The ship itself is lovely and the views amazing from the balcony room but we were often docked against the Viking cruise or other so there was no view all day. The bar staff were the worst disappointment as they often seemed to busy to offer you a friendly service and were quite rude on a couple of occasions Other passengers felt the same as us and commented on it.We paid for the premium drinks package but found we had to wait a long time to get the drinks.Last year we found the bar staff wonderful.Overall this year was not as good as last year when we went on the emerald star and the reason is the staff. Even some of the dining staff were a bit abrupt . The best parts of the cruise was the visit to Budapest..a truly fascinating city and the trip to a Slovenian family for the afternoon.Overall the route of this cruise is wonderful and the Danube was simply lovely. The itinerary was ideal. Starting in Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Durnstein, Melk, Passau, Regensberg, Nuremberg, then 3 days in Prague to finish with. Budapest & Vienna are stunning with the other locations not far behind. The ship was very good and the staff excellent. The cabins were well appointed. Ours was at the back so suffered a bit from engine/propeller noise. We had the "drinks package" which made things a lot easier but all guests were entitled to wine, beer or soft drinks with lunch & dinner. The excursions generally were good with quite a lot of walking so not good for disabled/elderly passengers. The only real disappointment was the food. Breakfast was standard buffet fare. Lunch was also buffet-style and pretty limited in choice. Salads were available every day but quite often wth no cold meats or cheese. Dinner was generally ok but never really exciting and portions were never generous. We appreciate that we were on a small ship so they could never compare with larger sea cruise ships. However, having been on other river cruises, we did find the catering a tad disappointing. Evening entertainment was virtually non-existent but that was fine - we never expected (or wanted) it. However the "crew's show" was awful, little more than silly party games! In the evening the lounge/bar area was pretty noisy so a "quiet" area would have been good. Would we go with Emerald again? Probably yes but there are many other river cruise lines to try first. Read Less

I had cruised the Rhine before but this was my first cruise with Emerald. We were very impressed! The crew always went the extra mile. The food was excellent, as was the service, entertainment. Patricia, the cruise co-ordinator was efficient & tireless. My other experience was with Viking, but this was a superior experience. We have already booked with Emerald for September/18 to cruise the Douro River in Portugal & Spain. The ship, the Emerald Sky is relatively new, so it has all the conveniences. Hot water was plentiful & our steward Malik was meticulous, friendly & efficient. The chocolates on the pillows are a nice touch. Power windows & air conditioning made us quite comfortable. The ship also has a pool with a relaxing area to sit & converse with friends. The overall atmosphere created by everyone was increasingly informal & relaxed. Everyone had a lot of fun. We highly recommend Emerald. Read Less

Having done many ocean cruises we were very impressed with the Emerald river cruise. Everything was spotlessly clean. The quality and variety of food was impressive and the complementary wines were very good. The staff were friendly and attentive, they clearly enjoyed their work and any special requests were quickly met. They were a delightful set of people. We thoroughly enjoyed all of the included visits which without exception were well organised, informative and pitched right on duration and content. The cabin was larger than we anticipated and although there was limited hanging space there were also six large drawers for storage and the cases slid under the bed. However, it did take us two days to discover the shelves hidden behind the mirrors in the bathroom! Entertainment was generally low key but very enjoyable. The indoor pool area had a spa like atmosphere and the upper deck was great on the warm days. Overall, a trip that we would recommend. Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful river cruise with Emerald from Budapest to Amsterdam last year and had expectations of reliving the excellent experience we had then. Emerald Radiance was launched earlier this year and is still going through the snagging process that one experiences with anything new. However, there were several major problems with this boat. Three cabins which reeked of fuel fumes were allocated to guests, one couple chose to stay in one of these balcony cabins (????)) The shower in our Owners cabin flooded the bijout bathroom every time we used it. The cabin was a lot smaller than the brochure pictures suggested and I could fall out of bed, straight into the bathroom. There appeared to be a staffing issue. Although the majority of the staff were friendly there were only an exceptional few who were experienced in the service industry. This led to a stressed out anxious staff, which in turn led to a slightly anxious experience for guests. The Horizon lounge was so crammed with sufficient seating that navigating your way round it was a challenge, even empty handed. Carrying drinks as well was asking for spillage. This looks like a long list of moans, it is, but we were both disappointed by the 3 star experience that we had, rather than the 4 - 5 Star experience we expected from our trip last year. The trip was certainly not worth the price we paid. The weather was lovely but the areas that we berthed in were mainly isolated and unless you were willing to be up, washed, dressed, breakfasted and ready to leave for the 9am excursions, there was little to investigate. Chosen for 70th birthday treat because we had a superb cruise with Emerald on the Rhine but it did not match that experience. The sound proofing was non-existent. Our cabin, 306, was directly under the ships air conditioning unit which was very very loud. When the cabins either side turned their TVs on we could hear every word and them talking and when they opened their shower room door and walked about. Also heard people walking on the sun deck. The cabins were very small compared with other Emerald ships, with very little storage space. The quality of the food was excellent but it was spoilt by there being too few waiters who were not trained properly. We often waited over 10 minutes to be offered tea or coffee at breakfast and wine and water at lunch and dinner. One night our dinners sat on the bar for such a long night time that by the time they were served the rest of the diners were being served dessert and our meals were cold. We had an embarrassed apology and an admittance of it being their mistake. It was difficult to catch the waiters' eyes and often they would serve one or two people wine, water etc at the table and ignore the other 4. The cruise director was poor: rude, did not listen, lost his temper when two people out of 100 went to the coach instead of waiting for him at the appointed place and told everyone else, treated us like errant children and his entertainment was not good. The fitness person was also the hairdresser so there were not enough slots for everyone to have massages. Read Less

Group tour that enabled us to travel with friends and neighbors from our community on a river cruise in Europe. Emerald Waterways offered a very reasonable price cruise with all daily guided port excursions included, as well as all meals and tipping. The staff was exceptional - friendly, helpful and always made us feel they genuinely liked what they do. Our cabin and the ship's public areas were always clean. The daily menus gave us an opportunity to try many different foods, and always presented well. Many of us thought there would be more German meal options. As to ports, we could have skipped Amsterdam if could have flown home from another airport. Schipol is a horrible experience. This was our first river cruise and trip to Europe. We won't do another one simply because of the extremely long and tiring air travel. However, we will certainly recommend Emerald and specifically Star. Read Less

We chose this cruise for a number of reasons. We loved that all tipping was included, so we didn't need to think about this. We loved that it was working class people and not an elite group of passengers. We were happy that there was a pool on board to take advantage of after a hot day of touring. We spent a few days exploring Budapest before we embarked. We were greeted promptly at the airport and at our hotel so there was no stress. The cabins were beautifully appointed and very efficient. The ship was pristinely kept and everything was sparklingly clean. The dining options were adequate and the entertainment on 2 occasions was fun. The staff was bubbly and super helpful. All of the local tour guides were knowledgeable. The walking tours were divided into leveled groups so everyone could keep up. We met many lovely people and are already planning our next cruise. First time in Europe and wanted all the details taken care of for me. They were, and in the best way possible. Great English speaking guides, wonderful transmitter type communication devices, clear walking maps, with just the right amount of time on shore, everything was wonderful. The excursions were a big part of what made the cruise memorable. The cruise director was full of enthusiasm and knowledge. The crew was unfailingly pleasant and always had a smile on their faces. Word of caution, if you like to spend your cruise time outdoors, i.e. on the top deck of the ship, know your route. For 4 days of my 8 day cruise the upper deck was closed due to the frequency of low bridges. That was a big disappointment, I love being outside watching the world go by. The ship, crew, dining and excursions were first rate and I would definitely travel with Emerald again. Read Less

If you go anywhere to find fault you will. But we overlook any little things and are great full we are there. The history astounded, the local foods were good, the staff worked hard. The moving windows in the cabins were neat. We were disappointed with the last minute switch in ships for no apparent reason as we were beside the original one we thought we had booked. The movie area was broken so that we enjoyed the pool but only saw movies on the TV. The booking we ok. The website needs reprogramming to actually allow the choices being offered rather than a manual override. Weather good to too hot. But on those days we enjoyed the scenery from the ship. Local entertainment was great. Overall, we old go again. Read Less

This cruise was chosen because it was one way ie from Budapest to Nuremberg. We had a horrendous journey out thanks to British Airways leaving 27 bags off the flight that all appeared to be Emerald Waterways customers. One bag arrived on the following flight, the other arriving to the ship at about midnight. The ship was not the one on the schedule allegedly because of the tides. but somehow managed to be on the Danube and at one time moored up along side us. The ship we were on was the Emerald Sky and not the Emerald Sun. Cabins were comfortable. Dining was basic and waiters were not very attentive, possibly because their tips were included in the price of the cruise. Entertainment was minimal and activities were restricted on board to the indoor pool, and the gym. Lounge bar service was poor, again waiters being unattentive. Port excursions were good and the tour guides were very knowledgeable. We have been on a river cruise with another company where the service of all the ship's crew was excellent. This cannot be said about Emerald Waterways. The only member of the crew that impressed us was the cabin staff. On the final day we had to vacate the cabin by 08.30hrs and were herded into the Lounge Bar as the Sun Deck was out of action. Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise because we have been wanting to take a "refresher tour" of some of the stops our ship made. The remainder of the cities we visited were new to us. We especially wanted to tour Budapest, Hungry. For personal reasons we weren't interested in taking a large, crowded, and hectic cruise ship for this trip. The pace is slower on the river cruise. The smaller number of passengers on board allowed us to meet many interesting people rather than just those at our dinner table. The tours of the cities were through enough for us to become familiar with the territory, and explore it on our own. The cabins are as comfortable as a large cruise ship cabin with the usual cabin services available. There was always a wide variety of food to choose from at every meal. I would not recommend a river cruise for children in that the tours and activities are better suited for adults. There is a small pool but not much else for children. Entertainment was planned with adults in mind. Our embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. We had a wonderful cruise director. Were there any negatives? Well, it rained which limited time on the sun deck. Some of the city maps given to us (especially for Vienna) were not great resources for finding streets. Yes, we would take another river cruise as long as the stops on the trip are of interest to us. Read Less

Emerald sets high expectations but then fails to deliver. On an 8 day cruise, the top deck was closed for four days. The food is satisfactory, but the service needs a lot of improvement. There was only one night of "local" entertainment. We traveled through Germany, but only one lunch contained any local cuisine. A lot of minor issues detracted from the overall enjoyment of our cruise. The shore excursions were very good. Most of the tour guides were knowledgeable and very entertaining. During lunch and dinner, complimentary wine and beer are served liberally. If you are drinking something other than that, getting a first glass or even a refill is painfully slow. I contacted Emerald customer service and informed them of some shortcomings. Response time was very slow and did not rally address my concerns. The European river cruise is much better than ocean cruising, but overall I was not satisfied with Emerald. I Would be hesitant to book another cruise with Emerald. Read Less

This was our 3rd river cruise. We chose EW over the leading River Cruise line in the U.S. market because we wanted a different experience all around and EW did NOT dissapoint! For starters, if you are not part of their pre-cruise excursion, do not count on any communication from EW to find where you would find the ship on the Danube . If one did not use Emerald for airport transfer and were in Budapest prior to cruise, GOOD LUCK!! You're on your own. EW makes it "your" responsibility to call the ship and find out the port location! - The port location was the furthest from the city center and absolutely nothing to look at. Remember with this cruise one spends a full afternoon, evening, overnight, breakfast and lunch aboard the ship sitting on the Danube. - THIS WAS THE MOST ANNOYING aspect of our cruise: We always stay on the bottom floor because we spend very little time in the room just as when we are in a hotel and there is so much to see and explore outside of the room (in this case the ship)! If you are on the first floor there is a horrendous noise every time "anyone" on the ship flushes the toilet in their room. It's a loud pop and accompanied by a loud "waterfall" like noise. No kidding. Totally unacceptable!! How can EW market rooms in a floor that has this type of constant noise disturbance!? - Buffet food was mediocre at best and reminded me of the dorm cafeteria food in my college days. The only bright spot was the salad variety. On the dinner selections, there was not one main course item that I would ever remember as tasty or flavorful. Nothing had any flavor! Every dish was bland. - Very noisy dining lounge due to poor acoustic design. Another blunder by design engineers!! - Big crowds and not enough stations for the breakfast and lunch buffets. High passenger to host/waiter ratios. Only 6 or 7 hosts/waiters for about 180 passengers. I felt bad for all the staff on the dining room. THE ONLY BRIGHT SPOT: The staff in every department. From the Air dept. in Boston to the housekeeping crew to the captain. They do the absolute best they can and work very hard. Read Less

The extra activities were phenomenal and worth it. The accommodations on board were wonderful and comfortable. We loved the automatic window balcony for an open air experience when we wanted. Previous cruise with Emerald Waterways wetted our appetite for river cruising. Interest in Portuguese wine made Secrets of the Douro a natural choice as it provided excellent opportunity to appreciate the panoramic scenery of the Douro. And we were not disappointed. The pleasure of soaking up the atmosphere on the sun deck as we sailed up the Douro, passing numerous vineyards was, as title suggests, a recipe for relaxation. The Emerald Radiance is a new ship and is comfortable, clean and welcoming. The staff were excellent, always helpful, keen to ensure nothing affected our cruise. Any problems/complants were swiftly handled especially by our two main points of contact, Louis and Raquel who both scored maximum points in our estimation. Food was good and we particularly liked the different Portuguese wine offered each day. Excursions were well organised and interesting especially visit to Salamanca, well worth seeing, and the visit to Taylors Port Cellar that provided informative insight into making of port wine. Highlight of the trip though was the evening out visit to Quinta da Pacheco. The venue, ambience, food ...and wine made this an evening that will be remembered for a long time. Overall an excellent cruise, any niggling hiccups swiftly forgotten. Read Less

The excursions were well organised with excellent tour guides. Offering different levels of activity was an added bonus and suited all abilities. Only a few minor issues, the 'English bacon' was definitely not English bacon and the soup spoons were more like tablespoons! Also would have liked to see the bed linen changed more frequently (the towels were changed daily). We chose the cruise to fit in with our ruby wedding anniversary and definitely made the right journey from Amsterdam to Budapest. To journey the reverse route may have been a little disappointing as to end with a night cruise of Budapest was truly special. Thank you to all the Emerald Dawn crew for all your hard work. Read Less

The crew handled the embarkation and disembarkation expertly. The only glitch was that my husband's baggage was set aside to the new passenger side at the end instead of the leaving passenger's. Not sure how this happened as they were together outside our door. The ship feels new and is organized very well. Unfortunately, it was cool and rainy so we didn't get to use the space at the top of the ship which would have been nice. The ship was always very clean as was the cabin. The cabin has a lovely full-length window that pulls down half way allowing for a balcony feel. The cabin is small as I imagine most are on cruises (this was our first cruise) but very well appointed and we felt very comfortable relaxing there when that's what we wanted to do. As I have food intolerances, there was a detailed menu sent to my room daily with the foods I could not have highlighted. This I considered above and beyond. However, the food was not always substituted - sometimes the offending item was just left out (ex. a salad with no dressing) and one night I was given a meal with dairy and gluten having been told it had none. Other nights, the meals had good substitutions. The lunch and breakfast always had lots of options so I never felt deprived at all. The shore excursions were excellent and we treated ourselves to the Viennese concert which was well worth the money spent. The service was exemplary and the crew always friendly and eager to please. The entertainment was spotty but we really didn't expect much in terms of that anyway. Read Less

The staff from the moment we stepped onto the boat were amazing and extremely helpful. The wait staff were always asking if they could help. The food was incredible and the variety was huge never bored. Our room was extremely tight but we never spent any time in there except to sleep so all good. The only 2 things I felt needed to be addressed here is the following:- On the Thursday night which was 2 nights before we departed they started talking about our disembarkation details which was very disappointing as the last thing on our minds was getting off the ship. They also made us feel by the Friday that they were more concerned about getting us off the ship than looking after us for the last 2 days. I also spent the Friday in the Wellness centre which was very disappointing. I found out during my massage that the lovely lady doing my treatments had only done 3 months of intense training in all things related the beauty treatment and hair styling. I ended up asking her to stop trying to blowdry my hair as she was making such a mess of it I ended up doing it back in my room. I then went out on that afternoon and got it done professionally at a hair salon. This is no reflection on the beauty therapist but this is a joke. Have never been to Europe or on a river cruise. This trip was a dream come true, esp the 3 days prior to cruising in Prague. Pauline in Prague was just a sweetie and a fabulous tour guide. However was disappointed we were able to do our excursion of the Blanca Castle in Prague due to the lack of interest. Awaiting my refund for this excursion The staff/tour guides for Emerald Sun were excellent. The cabin was perfect for my roommate & me. Always clean, clean linens, extra touch of chocolate each night, great having our itinerary furnished daily, so through. Entertainment and activities were so much fun, staff joined right in. Service was excellent, furnished bottled water each time we disembarked. The food was delicious and I enjoyed the flexible hrs for breakfast. Met so many wonderful new friends from several countries. Enjoyed the walking tours as I saw so much more of Europe, the castles, churches, architecture and food. Enjoyed our Tea with a local family and their lifestyle. Darren was great informing us of Day to day events, so informative, The Commander, Captain & crew ensured we were safe and on schedule. Our ship was a perfect size. Was very impressed with how smooth our embarkation and disembarkation went. I didn't travel with children. My roommate has travel abroad on serval trips which help me tremendously. Again it was a dream of a little lifetime for me and I would definitely go again especially with this size ship and travelers.
