The cruise had an appealing itinerary together with the opportunity for Christmas in a warmer climate. The cost was at the lower end. I believe we had value for money. The Magellan visited Amsterdam, Vigo, Lisbon, Cape Verde, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Madeira and, Leixoes (for Porto). We were allocated cabin 5078, adjacent to reception. It was quiet and in mid ships comfortable. In fact although there were up to 6m swells, the ship was reasonably stable. We dined in the Waldorf restaurant at the early sitting 5:45. We found the food good and the service friendly and quick. We had always finished the 5 course meal by 7,00. The waiters were friendly and always willing to help if needed. Even when fruit was not available for dessert, he was able to produce some. The shows in the evening were of a variable standard. 3 comedy acts were mediocre. The musical shows of dancers and vocalists were generally good although we disliked one of the vocalists. The daytime activities were unappealing. The lectures were either about astronomy or 50s singers. Although there was a bridge room there was nothing organised and so we managed it ourselves. There were not even enough cards available and I had to purchase some from the shop. The service was generally good. Occasionally it took some time to order and receive drinks in the evening and at shows. The ports were mostly excellent. The biggest disappointment was Cape Verde. Really not worth the 4 sea days there and back. Our biggest disappointment was the port information (mostly limited to the shore excursions) and the shore excursions on offer were unappealing and looked poor value. We did similar things ourselves at much lower cost. We were fortunate with the weather and the Christmas and New Year celebrations were good. Free wine and bubbly were supplied. Read Less

We chose this cruise as a treat to get us in the mood for Christmas. The cabin and ship were of a good standard. Food very good. The ship its self was COLD, very cold cabin,problem which was not solved the entire cruise, even worse the outside doors were open, obviously to let passengers on and off when in port however there was no extra heating, no hot air blowers and the bars were COLD, the dining areas were COLD you could only eat either end of dining areas with a coat and gloves on, would not book again in the winter. The staff were all friendly and the service was good, such a shame the heating was not improved on because the trip was spoilt. Embarkation was efficient and the two excursions we booked were also good. My husband and I would have booked to cruise again on the Columbus because the ship in general is lovely but this experience has really put us off. Read Less

I chose this cruise as it had good iteniary. At Honinsvag the ship could not disembark customers as the tidal height had been miscalculated and the exit from the ship could not be used, we had to wait two hours while steps were erected from a lorry resulting a lot of unhappy people waiting to disembark, when the steps were in place further problems arisen when they were very steep and the elderly found it very difficult to negotiate. At Alta the passengers had to duck down very low at there return to the ship to board. one man said his wife had to crawl ( but I did not witness this). The food in the buffet was pretty average, the main dining rooms gave exceptionally small portions (one tip is to ask for extra steamed veg from the small print at the bottom of the menu page) the food quality was poor. Two consecutive sea days were boring as there was very poor entertainment and not much else. The decks were not opened early enough in the morning for a stroll around having been taped off for the previous storms. The deck crew (engineering)seemed to be quite unfriendly. Sea days had nowhere to sit in the buffet - I took my food to my room. The Captain was changed after the first stairway cock up but I am not sure if this was anything to do with it ! In rough seas we were forbidden to use the lifts. In the health spa the sauna did not work properly we had to keep asking for it to be reset, the door on the steam room was plastic and had warped it also had a bolt on the outside to keep it closed ! the showers were cold only. The cabin water was over treated with chemical and tasted foul. Disembarking was badly organised they changed the exit door leading to chaos and a slow disembark. Read Less

We chose this cruise following some research and wished to see the Northern Lights from the ocean as opposed to land, would have been better to have viewed from the land again. The Magellan and CMV are best avoided until they can organise this type of cruise, and they are fortunate enough to have a great team of staff, awful management though. It seemed as though 30% of our time was spent in queues, embarkation was poor with the car park located a distance away opposite Tilbury railway station with a bus pick up service, then when e returned to join the queue a rather excessive delay with the ubiquitous photographer awaiting us. Located the cabin and eventually our luggage arrived, in two separate lots, cabin was very hot and chambermaid showed us how to turn down the heating, a card informed us of our table number and dining time. Disembarkation was a further exercise in the sport of queuing as the cards and machines were incompatible with the delays unacceptable and not user friendly for wheelchair users. Breakfast in our appointed restaurant closed at 9 am so a lie in meant joining hundreds in the Bistro, Raffles, no seating nor mugs available in this area. We landed at Ports where due to it being a Sunday all was closed, the Captain, changed mid cruise, decided to miss Trondheim as he was running late and there was a sea swell, so we proceeded to a small village after two days at sea, yet another closed village. We were on Holiday. The cruise director mentioned that Bergen had a lovely farmers market and a fish market, but couldn’t be bothered to find out if was actually going to be there or open! Have a visit to the Cathedral for £29 leaving for a 20 minute drive at 10:00 to find the Cathedral wasn’t open until 15:00 a phone call or a peek at the web site would have given this information. We paid extra for a window, this was then boarded up, for safety reasons! In spite of leaving Bergen early, following a delayed arrival, he missed the Pilot at 3 am resulting in a 8 hour delay, up at 6 am on this morning and no announcements about the delay until almost 9 am prior to an announcement and that we could now remain in our cabins until 15:00, in fairness lunch was provided. We would never consider this company again Read Less

MV Columbus very nice ship well appointed. Spacious cabins good storage space, cases under beds. Lovely crew all friendly and very helpful. Good launderettes on two decks. Dining, food seemed to be down to price nothing special compared with other ships. Very popular was fish and chips when served during a special culinary buffet. Desserts too sugary and hot desserts not quite what it said on the tin. During the days at sea, expensive craft lessons, only two lecturers, both on wildlife and photography and one a lifestyle expert as well. No regular dance classes, therefore no dance sessions except for a couple of attempts which were failures. Scheduling of things to do wasn't done with much thought so a lot of overlapping. The ship's entertainment company of singers and dancers were excellent very, very talented. Good shows, good choreography and costumes but the same faces every night. Late in cruise a couple of comedians came onboard. One a good song and joke act. For once a good band, no tinny trumpet but the music whether live or recorded drowned the singers. Free shuttle buses at some destinations. Excursions seemed expensive but we enjoyed the ones we went on but mostly we did our own thing with taxis etc cheaper. Disembarkation a complete shambles, cases all mixed up lack of trolleys. We were using the coach connection which meant self load the cases, not enough coaches, delayed departure due to trying to squeeze people in, luggage wouldn't fit missed our connection. If CMV improves the food, entertainment, daytime recreation we would go again with them. Read Less

This was our 9th Cruise and our second with CMV, the first being on the Marco Polo to Iceland Greenland & Canada and we still rate this as our best ever cruise. The food, service and entertainment were all superb so we were very much looking foward to 46 nights on CMV's new flagship. Regretably, apart from the itinerary this was almost certainly our least enjoyable cruise. The food was poor, there were issues withe service in the MDR and the entertaiment overall was not good. Lot's of passengers complained to the head chef regarding food which no some nights was almost inedible and he blamed it on a restricted budget which did not allow him to purchase the best ingredients. I had read reviews rearding issues with service and assumed that by November these would have been resolved but sadly this was not the case. We often had the feeling that our waiters just wanted us in and out asap. Plates were cleared before everyone had finished, cutlery for one course was put out while the previous course was still being eaten and on one night an attempt was made to serve coffee immediatly after our main course despite the fact we had ordered a sweet and cheese course.Generally there was also something of language issue with some staff from the Indian Subcontinent. The entertainment was also an issue. Overall it was not bad with a very hardworking showteam putting on lot's of shows, but there was a distinct lack of guest entertainers- just two in all for a 46 night cruise and when i challenged the Cruise Director regarding this he confirmed what the chef had said, i.e. that was all his budget would allow him to do, and the two we did have, one was second rate and the other appaling Having had a major re-fit there were some areas which appeared to have been forgotten. The showtheatre in paricular where some of the seating was very shabby and worst of all there were rows of bench seats which are lower that the chairs in front so anyone sitting in these had a very restricted view. I could go on particularly regarding the way in which dining during some very rough weather was handled a bemusing layout in the plantation buffet, what appeared to have been recycled carpet outside "the dome". I was always taught that when launching a new product it is essential to get it right first time as you may not get a second chance and CMV will have to work very hard to persuade me to book another cruise. Cuba was on the 'To Do' List and this was our 4th CMV Cruise so we knew it would be a cruise that we would enjoy in comfort rather than luxury. The friendliness of the crew is a real bonus - when we arrived at the Terminal, our Cabin Steward from our August 2016 cruise outside and came over to greet us. Even better was the fact that he had been promoted to Supervisor, responsible for our group of Cabins on Deck 5 and he made a point of 'warning' our Cabin Steward about us - it was like renewing a friendship and that same happy atmosphere continued with our new Cabin Steward, Pandit. Customer Service was really good across all aspects of the cruise operation. Some Passengers commented that a couple of staff were surly/uncommunicative but my experience was that the individuals had limited English and were avoiding detailed communications where possible. All other staff were very friendly and more than happy to share a joke or banter whenever time allowed. Embarkation was really quick - we arrived about an hour earlier than our time slot but were booked in after a wait of 5 minutes or so. Disembarkation is always frantic, and, with a 4 days pre-Xmas cruise to follow our 46 night cruise, we had to leave the cabin at 07:00 and lug our bags up to the Palladium Show Lounge before carting them down again (we chose Express Disembarkation for a fast departure). Disembarkation is always frenzied and we had to wait until almost 10:00 before we could leave - tedious waiting around but a small price to pay for such a good cruise. Dining is either in the Waterfront Restaurant (Open seating for Breakfast and Lunch, 18:30 and 20:30 Sittings for Dinner) or the Plantation Bistro. There are also a small Grill Restaurant and a revolving themed Indian/Japanese/Chinese offering in a cordoned-off area of the Bistro. We did not try the Grill or the Oriental Cuisine offerings. The Bistro is self-service and for picky eaters like me, this is ideal - there is always a combination of food available. In addition, Salmon and Chicken was available on request. My wife had to make a switch to a low salt diet midway through the cruise and this was accommodated seamlessly. Even when we chose to eat in the Bistro, the Serving Staff fetched the low Salt Meal from the Waterfront Restaurant and served it at our Bistro Table. The service was superb and always delivered with a smile. Desserts were a little limited - Fruit Crumble and Custard and creamy, sugary blancmange style sweets were the mainstay. Fresh fruit, typically Pineapple and at least 2 flavours of Melon were available at all times. The Bistro has seating and formica-style tables that is more 'Luxurious Works Canteen' than upmarket restaurant. The decor is lifted by Stencilled Bon Mots on the Windows - 'Life is Short, Eat Dessert First' etc. Menus are repeated every 4-7 Days. For a picky eater like me, this was a bonus since I knew that a suitable offering was never too far away but several cruisers moaned about the repetitive nature of the menu. Entertainment is the usual twice-nightly show in the Palladium Show Lounge. Dance/Musical productions of a decent, safe level, delivered with energy, rather than innovation, were the order of the day. The Guest Comedians were pretty dire - one comedian had his heyday in the early 1970s and was still delivering material from that era - toe-curling mother-in-law jokes and non-pc material. Afternoon Dance Classes were available and the Salsa (in advance of the Cuba visit) were really popular and resulted in lots of laughter from the participants. The only criticism is that the programme was haphazard so Salsa was followed by Line Dancing and then by Ballroom Dancing etc at random intervals. This made it difficult for Beginners to consolidate their learning and subsequent Sessions were missed by the participants. Lectures were patchy in quality and variety - probably the weakest aspect of the Entertainments Programme. The 46 nights cruise meant that Lecturers were working outside their specialisms and the latter part of the cruise Sessions were a 'Read from the Slide' exercise. The Physical Exercise Programme was very well operated. Doreen's Morning 'Mile with a Smile' laps around Deck 14 took place at 08:30 exactly on every Sea Day, and finished with a challenging 10 minutes Stretching Class. This was followed at 09:00 precisely by Doreen's Zumba Classes that were very well attended. The only criticism is that attendance at both Sessions meant missing breakfast or a very early meal! Afternoon Stretching Classes of 45-60 minutes with Oleg were very popular and were not for the faint-hearted! Everyone benefited from these 'Easy Effort' (they weren't!) classes. Shore Excursion Presentations were pretty poor - the Presentational Skills were dreadful and focused more on selling the Excursions, reading out Tour Details from the Slides. The actual Shore Excursions were well organised and quite reasonable value for money. We took excursions in Ponta Delgada, Uzmal (Mayan Ruins at Progreso), Altan Ha (Mayan Ruins at Belize) and Panama City. At other ports of call, we wandered and explored or visited the Caribbean Beaches. Some of our best moments were meetings with local people on our DIY wanderings. Cuba was the star turn after the bureaucracy of Passport Control and Havana is a safe, welcoming place. We visited a street Bar and I was encouraged to dance with the Band in front of the Diners/Drinkers - after an 8 minutes 'performance' I realised just how unfit I was! In Tobago, a Police Officer suggested a couple of Bars to visit and even accompanied us to the premises! The Cozumel visit on a Sunday (port shops closed), followed by Belize on Monday (Public Holiday - all shops closed) was not a triumph. The cruise was one of the best we have experienced, especially when the price paid is taken into account - we paid more for Dinner, Bed & Breakfast in a budget hotel than the nightly cost of the cruise. At the cruise nightly price, economies have to be expected and these are evident in the menu, the range of entertainment and the padding out of daytime activities by (chargeable) Craft Classes. Good quality service, safe (if unspectacular) budget entertainment, friendly and efficient staff and a great range and variety of destinations in comfortable surroundings - all at a nightly price lower than a budget hotel. We will certainly take another CMV cruise - it's only a question of waiting for the itinerary that matches our Wish List. Read Less

We chose this 7 night cruise for the ports visited, convenience (no fly) and price. Having read mixed reviews we weren't sure what to expect. This was our first cruise with Cruise and Maritime: the model suits us and we would return. We enjoy cruises as a relaxed, comfortable way to travel to some beautiful and interesting destinations. We appreciated the smaller ship with a relaxed homely feel. CMV seem to know their clientele and cater well for them - mainly older and British on this cruise, many being repeat cruisers with CMV. Despite being a small ship, facilities were adequate, including 3 hot tubs, a sauna and gym, none of which were busy. It may not have the glitz and luxury of newer and bigger ships / lines, (no fruit in cabin, chocolates on pillows, or quirky folded towels etc) and the main restaurant was a bit cramped. But for us this was more than compensated for by the quiet, relaxed, intimate ambience (about 800 passengers). We particularly appreciated: - the most efficient embarkation and disembarkation we have ever experienced (car to cabin in under 20 minutes, with luggage following a few minutes later) - tea and coffee included and served at the table at the end of dinner (some lines no longer do that). Tea (wide choice) and coffee freely available on deck 8 most waking hours. - free shuttles at ports (although we mostly walked) - beautiful medieval ports and a lovely cruise along the Seine - not accesssible on larger ships. - personal and prompt responses from staff to queries or concerns. e.g. staff remembered our preferences despite our changing dinner sitting (as per our request). - announcements clear and in English. Just enough but not too much. - enrichment programme. I attended 4 gardening lectures which were interesting and useful. There were also art, craft and line dancing classes available, all well attended. - classical music duo playing every evening. - entertainment team did well, including the ships own band. Again not glitzy but enjoyable. - fellow cruisers seemed kind and considerate, interesting and not noisy (adults only on this cruise)! - evening activities in the bars were self-contained and the rest of the ship remained quiet - no casino / gambling machines - easy to promenade right round the ship. - good written summary port information for each stop, and no hard sell re excursions. - well attended Sunday service taken by an officer. - the small ship was quick and easy to get around. - repeated sightings of dolphins as we cruised! All in all an unfussy, relaxed cruise on a small older ship, with personal service from helpful staff, visiting beautiful places. The Cruise and Maritime style suits us and we would certainly return if the price, timing and destinations matched our requirements. Read Less

We picked this cruise because it looked an interesting itinerary, departed from the UK and appeared to be really good value for money. Booked directly with CMV we were delighted to find we had been given a 4 category upgrade from 8 to 12. We parked at the port and embarkation was quick and efficient. Our cabin was midships and was quite a good size with 2 large windows and lots of storage space (16 small drawers, 8 large drawers and 2 double wardrobes). Tea and coffee making facilities in the cabin although we didn't use them. Our cabin steward kept the cabin spotlessly clean and really tidy. The location was convenient as it was really close to the central staircase. The ship is old and has a feeling of older style cruising which we really enjoyed. Marco Polo is an adults only ship and at the age of 51 I was at the younger end of the age range of people on board. Dress code for dinner was announced every day. There were 2 formal; 3 informal and 2 casual. The dress code was expected in the buffet as well and for dinner the buffet tables were set with properly with tablecloths. Most people seemed happy to follow the dress code which I like. There were 2 restaurants: the Waldorf (formal) or Marcos (buffet). Breakfast was buffet style in both but in the Waldorf the waiters served your drinks. A reasonable selection of items and both had chefs cooking any style of eggs you wished. The omelettes were particularly good. For lunch and dinner the food choices tended to be the same or similar in both but obviously in the Waldorf you were served and the food was beautifully presented. The buffet is not huge so there were often people waiting for tables. Dinner was really, really good. We went to the Waldorf every night. Five courses: appetiser, soup, salad, main, cheese or dessert. The staff were so friendly and so cheery and we were lucky to get a table with 3 other couples who were fantastic company. There was teatime (sandwiches and cakes) 15.30 to 16.30 every day and late night snacks were brought round all bars at about 11pm. On Gala Dinner night there was a sumptuous buffet at 11pm with the most amazing food sculptures although I think most people on dinner sitting 2 were probably still too full from dinner. We opted for the drinks package which at £119 for 7 days (£17 per person per day) is very good value. Whilst drinks are not particularly expensive in the bars you could spend the £17 by having 3 glasses of wine and a diet coke every day so it you're going to drink more than that it is absolutely worth it. There is an extensive list of cocktails (£4 or less) and other drinks available. The only negative about the drinks package is it says you have to book in the first 24 hours but that is not quite true. If you try to book on your second day (having boarded the previous afternoon) they will expect you to pay for 7 days even though you only have 6 days left and you have spent money in the bar the previous evening. If it is not a daily thing they should focus on it being £119 for 7 days rather than focusing on £17 per day. There are lots of activities and entertainments on board and everyone can choose to join in as much or as little as they wish. Games, quizzes, sports, lectures (our had gardening), classes (painting and crafts) even a session to take your knitting and have a natter with other knitters. Just sitting in the lounges doing crosswords and puzzles which were issued every day was a popular activity. We only went to one show (We will Rock You) which was fantastic. There was a very talented violin/piano duo performing in the lounge bar regularly every day and later in the evening you could head up to Scotts bar for a late cabaret followed by a disco. The ports we visited were Honfleur, Antwerp and Rouen. I suppose times are dependent on tides etc but we didn't get all that much time to spend anywhere. Rouen in particular was badly planned. We arrived in the evening but not many people left the ship as it is quite some way to the town so would have involved taxis and been quite expensive. the next day was Monday and most things were either shut all day or in the morning so we didn't get to see inside the beautiful cathedral or the Joan of Arc museum. The last shuttle back to the ship was 1pm but all aboard was 2.30pm so we could have had more time had they arrange the shuttles for longer. Cruising down the Seine was a very enjoyable day. Disembarking was very easy for us as we opted for the carry your own bags option and just walked off at 7am thus avoiding queues for lifts and car park chaos. We also got to keep our bags in the cabin and finish packing in the morning rather than have them ready by midnight the night before. The requirement to vacate cabins by 7.30am seemed a bit harsh (particularly as the ship is now going into dry dock). I'm sure we would have all appreciated a lie-in, a casual breakfast at the normal time then a leisurely disembarkation after rush hour. In summary we loved the whole experience. A small intimate ship with superb staff and wonderful fellow guests. We would book a cruise with CMV again. Read Less

We have just returned from a 6 day cruise on board the Magellan. When we arrived, we found the staff really helpful and friendly and within 20 minutes of checking in, we were on board the ship. We had a Seaview cabin on the 7th deck, which was more than adequate for our needs. The walk in shower was a good size and the bed comfortable. The cabin steward was excellent, keeping our room clean and provided guidance and assistance throughout the cruise. We found all of the restaurants clean and well presented, with a good and ample selection of food. Our evening meal was in the Kensington. Due to health problems, I am often restricted with what I can eat. Maryo was so helpful each day ensuring that my diet was catered for. Something I really appreciated as he didn't make me feel a nuisance. All in all we found the whole experience on board a pleasure and we would definitely recommend the holiday to others. We have already booked for 13 of our friends to join us on board for a Christmas overnight stay. Read Less
