I wanted to see Prague,Vienna and Budapest. This trip had a 4 day land trip (prague) and 7 days sailing. Sailing was by far the best part!. Prague was nice but of the 3 days we were there, there was only one included tour. Would have appreciated something included each day. Smooth bus trip (4hours) to Nuremberg where you boarded the ship and departed that night for Roth and then bussed back to Nuremberg for a tour the next day. That was not clear on the itinerary thus no chance to spend the day in Nuremberg- the tour was maybe 1.5 hours with little free time before back on the boat for lunch and departure. The rooms were perfect with plenty of storage space the bathrooms large with large showers and good water pressure. The rooms without the sliding glass doors (lower deck) had very small showers that would not be comfortable for tall or large people while the rooms on 2nd and 3rd floor (those with the large sliding glass doors) had large showers. The large sliding glass doors were fabulous while sailing and while in port. We only rafted to another vessel once so had good views The sailing was soooo smooth (and i am so sensitive to motion sickness) that at times you were not sure if you were moving! Even going through the 26 locks was a smooth ride. The city tours were good- they did have a “gentle walker group” for those using canes or just needed more time. The funny thing was one tour guide was told that the group she had would be the gentle walkers and thus she both walked and talked slowly! We did the optional excursion of the Budapest at night but i think it should have been included- you did get the classic night pictures of Budapest. The concert in Vienna was just for Avalon- it was held in an ornate room but not a concert hall- nevertheless it was both beautiful and funny. The orchestra members and the ballet members involved the audience. Use the bikes! The paths along the Danube are flat and easy to traverse by bike. We tried to do 5 miles on the days we could. It was great- bring a breakfast roll to feed the swans - you would see 20-30 along the Danube as you biked. The cruise director was great at calling a cab to the port so you could go into town for nightlife or giving you directions for public (take the U 1 and get off on the 4th stop). The food- spectacular. Those who were not impressed clearly are gourmet cooks! On our cruise i never heard a complaint. The 24 hour coffee/hot chocolate machine in the game room was popular all day. The onboard entertainment was OK. The best was an opera singer brought on board who was so funny we laughed so much-she sang and took selfies with the passengers! The informational talks on Austria, beer tasting were fine. The music quartet was just Ok. Mostly they wanted you to buy their CDs! Visit the great market in Budapest- it was not on the city tour but only a block from the boat so easy to visit- worth the trip-get paprika- we al did! I found that Euros worked in all the countries. But bring some coins as toilet use in town is pay only and sometimes no attendant to make change Casual dress everywhere- a bit dressier for the Vienna Concert however. The crew is first rate- excellent passenger service. They clean everything all the time (daily dusting of the wall art and multiple times a day cleaning of the hand rails). Multiple hand sanitation stations. After dinner when you return to your room the TV in the room displays a roaring fire in a fireplace- nich touch. Bring a jacket. The wind on the Danube was brisker than i expected and i needed a jacket especially when on the sky deck at night (this was mid May). They have umbrellas on board but i brought a small one on only used it once in the middle of a city tour. Streets are cobblestone thus uneven. We had turned ankles and one fall on our trip. The tri was as busy as you wanted to make it- lots of extra excursions- we only did 3 of the maybe 20 offered. Not much time for shopping- maybe 30 minutes in a city. But you could go back. Everything closed on Sunday so figure that in when youare planning your trip. English spoken everywhere- not an issue at all. The passengers were predominately American aged 50-70 with a few outliers. People friendly non complainers and having a great time. I was very sad when the trip ended. WIll definitely take another cruise with Avalon! Hope you choose to go on a river cruise! Read Less

I wanted to sail down the Rhine and it was lovely. The staff who took care of our room were excellent. The dining staff was fine except for the manager. For most of the trip, the food and wine were good. However, the last night, after tips are paid the wine stopped flowing. Before, someone responsible for wine walked among the diners making sure everyone was taken care of. The last night the waiters scrambled and you were lucky to get your first glass. The morning of departure, when leaving very early, coffee and tea had been put out in the lounge but no cups, when asked for one, was told by the person in charge that we had to wait till 6:30 am to get a cup. My sister in law had become ill and needed a doctor. Nobody on board asked after her or helped when she was disembarking, a fellow traveler helped her. At the beginning of the trip we had to phone and ask for our embarkation documents, we were half an hour on the phone. After which they sent them Fed Ex. Also terrible confusion with where to meet to board. Sorry but we found Viking handled it better. Read Less

We just returned from an absolutely AMAZING week onboard Avalons Imagery II cruise from Zurich (Basel) to Amsterdam. The boat was fantastic and the Panorama Suites, featuring Wall-to-Wall Panoramic Windows was spacious and well appointed. The crew really made the trip special. Katy our cruise coordinator was the best; always avail to answer any questions, a wealth of knowledge and what a great sense of humor. The dining room staff had great personalities and couldn't do enough for you. The chef, Joseph, always went above and beyond especially traveling with someone that had a dietary restrictions. He always created something special and even delivered personally when he could. Alex our cabin steward was fantastic and so was the staff at the reception desk. The ship is so intimate that you really got to know everyone working there and made the journey that much more pleasant. This was our first river cruise after being on 30+ ocean cruises and we loved the experience. Docking in the center and being able to walk or bike where we want. We loved having the bikes on board and took advantage of that. Another surprise was how many excursions were included in the price and they were really good. We opted to some optional tours and glad we were able to have several options for these wonderful excursions. No crowds of people at dinner or getting on or off the boat, another plus!! This was a great trip with fantastic stops and we were lucky to have a week that the weather was perfect, in the 70s with sunny skies! The only thing we disliked was when we were docked sometimes there was another boat docked up right up next to us. After a day out you want to return and relax back at your stateroom and enjoy the view, not look into another boat. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we knew that we wanted to have an experience with a cruise line where they take excellent care of you with fewer passengers to contend with. Avalon fit that bill with great reviews and the cruise proved them correct. All aspects of embarkation & disembarkation went so very smoothly. The meals in the dining room & elsewhere were delicious and varied, and the service in the dining room and the Panorama Lounge was first-rate. Thanks to Emilia, Yannis and all our servers - you are the best! Entertainment is not the main attraction of this cruise but the music provided each evening was enjoyable and appropriate. We did enjoy the demonstration of Black Forest woodcarving and the evening music of "La Strada". The shore excursions were great and handled professionally. We loved our visit to the Keukenhof Gardens, the canal tour of Amsterdam, and the walk back to the ship through town with our guide, Rita. Our tour of Strasbourg with Raphaela was informative, especially the tour of the cathedral and the free time we had later. Our view of the the castles and towns along the Rhine Gorge was unbelievable - that's what comes from being so close & personal from the ship's deck. Don't hesitate to go on this Romantic Rhine cruise - it's the trip of a lifetime. We can't wait to go on the Danube - with Avalon! Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise. My brother in law was in Holland 50 years ago as a student and wanted to go back. While this cruise only covered one country it was a wonderful experience. First of all, the boat only held about 138 passengers with a crew of 39. All crew member spoke English. Instructions from Avalon were easy to follow; but there is a lot of paperwork and it is important to read it all thoroughly. We met in Amsterdam and a bus took us to Haarlem to board the ship. The embarkation went smoothly. Our room was comfortable, the air conditioning could have been a little cooler. we were able to open our patio door when sailing. The excursions were great - very laid back. There was no pressure if you just wanted to stay on the boat and relax. The entertainment in the evening was simple and enjoyable and offered by locals which is unique to river cruising. The food was wonderful and well-prepared. Everything was attractively served and there was more than enough food to go around. There was always cookies, fruit and beverages available. Wine and beer were available with lunch and dinner; champagne at breakfast. The service staff was pleasant, informative and helpful. Would like to try a Viking cruise just for comparative purposes, but was very pleased by the Avalon experience. It was worth every dime! Read Less

Cruise in southern France. Met at airport with ride to hotel in Paris, very well organized trip. Luggage was in our room on boat when we arrived as well as in hotel at end of trip when we arrived there as well. If you get tired of the 2 hour dinners they offer a lighter meal in lounge and the last 2 days of trip offered a cookout lunch on deck. Several groups traveling together but that had not impact on our trip. Free time if you wish or optional tours available. Food was good and port talk each night was helpful to know what was going to be going on the next day. Rooms had plenty of storage space and bathrooms were nice. No children on board and about half the travelers were 50 to 60 year olds and other half over 70. Room was quite. Wine served at meals was regional wine, ok not great but they kept your glass full! Met at airport with private ride to hotel. Easy check in. Down side fast train from Paris to Dijon turned into a 4 hour bus ride because trains were on strike. Food was good, 2 hour dinners got tiring however they do offer a lighter meal in lounge most nights which was a good alternative. Last 2 days of cruise they had cookout on deck for lunch as an alternate option. City tours for most part were good. Optional tours we took were very good. About half the folks were middle age and other half older. Nightly port talks were good and short to the point. Happy hour every day was nice but sometimes got very crowded and hard to get service. Surprised at organ concert in one church we went to. Guests brought on twice for on board entertainment. Nightly music by on board "piano" player was ok, nothing great. Read Less

We really enjoyed our first cruise with Avalon. So many positive things but picking one, I'd say that everything on the Felicity was great, including the crew. This was her first sail of the season, so there were some little service glitches with new people but overall the ship was excellent. The cruise director was pushed with water levels, changed itineraries, different ports ... and she handled it all without breaking stride. Had I not known of the issues, I probably wouldn't have realized anything was going on. LOVED the ice machine, the 24hr coffee & treats corner, the nice smoking balcony on the stern, the ability to have small meals in the Panoramic Lounge, the long counter/desk that stretched the depth of the cabin and the incredible amount of storage ... I can't live without my "stuff". I think most ships have pretty cabins, excellent food, terrific crew, good itineraries, so the little things are what differentiates them. I liked the concept of a big sliding door and a "french balcony" but found that I really enjoy sitting on a balcony instead to watch the world go by. It's wonderful to be docked right in the middle of the towns; if you don't take a formal excursion you can enjoy the town itself on your own schedule. I'd recommend Avalon to anyone and am looking forward to cruising again soon. We are independent travellers' we've never taken a tour. I would like to see a little flexibility in scheduling the excursions; 830am gets really old after a few mornings when you're trying to relax on a trip. If there are 3 buses going out at 830, they could offer one of them for a 10am departure. Participants can handle their own lunch needs, we don't have to be back on the ship for every meal. . Everything about our week on Ms. Tranquility ll was Amazing. The ship was incredible, clean, comfortable A++++. It felt like a hotel room, with a wonderful view of the landscape as we sailed along. We stayed in Suite 307 which was delightful. The staff made our experience the best ever, always smiling and willing to make ourstay feel like home. The cruise director did a wonderful job, keeping everyone informed and happy. He cared for everyone and made it a point to meet everyone's needs. The excursions were well planned out and organized. The city tours in Germany were very informative with kowledgeable guides that were local people that had a love for their homeland. The food was delightful, always fresh and so very tasty. The dinner menu changed dailywith a lot of variety. The chef did an amazing job! We made some new friends and enjoyed sharing our experience with them. I would highly recommend a river cruise with Avalon. Thank You !! Read Less
