My wife and I recently completed a river cruise on Amawaterway's Amalyra from Paris to the English Channel and back and included a tour of the invasion beaches in Normandy which is by itself worth the trip. The trip was our fourth on AMA and very pleasant, as usual, with a very helpful and attentive crew that saw to every need of the passengers from the time that you steped foot on the dock until you returned. We have traveled on many different river cruise lines and although the worst cruise could only be described as wonderful we find that Amawaterways is exceptional. This trip was made even more pleasant than most by the personal attention displayed by the hotel manager, Sonia Ferrera. The entire crew was great but Sonia went above and beyond to see to the well being and contentment of each passenger and could only be described as the perfect host. Thank you Sonia. We hope to see you on a future cruise. Read Less

I was looking for a trip that everything was taken care of and we found it with AmaStella. Top level of service, food and entertainment. Every crew member was so welcoming and fun. I had some health issues last year and was concerned about the shore excursions, but quickly discovered that there were three levels to choose from and I was able to take the regular pace. Slower pace was available and more active pace for those who wished a higher activity level. The ship was beautiful and the meals outstanding. I especially liked that seating was not assigned for meals. This gave us a chance to meet and learn about many of our fellow travelers (148 passengers was a great size). Our cabin was very comfortable with everything you could need. The attention to detail was amazing. We had an issue with printing our boarding pass for our returning connecting flight in Amsterdam and the Cruise Manager was very helpful. It seems something triggered a VISA requirement on line before we could get back to the States. Reka assured us that as we were US citizens, a VISA wasn't necessary. She arranged to have a guide stay with us at the airport in Munich until we were assured the matter was corrected. Needless, as it was our first trip to Europe, it was great to be looked after personally. We highly recommend AMA Waterways. Read Less

My husband had been wanting to try a river cruise for years, but I was worried it would cater to the retired set. Our group of 11 middle aged travelers was pleasantly surprised at the variety of ages aboard and thoroughly enjoyed our week of luxury. First of all, we loved having choices for our excursions each day from biking to hiking or taking a more relaxed tour by bus and walking. All the tour guides were local which added to the uniqueness of each port. The Ama Serena is gorgeous, and the staff is friendly and attentive. It was hard to keep track of our wine consumption as our glasses were continually refilled. Our group is well traveled and coming from San Francisco food is paramount. The quality, variety, and presentation of cuisine for each meal was exceptional. Lastly, our cruise manager, Nick Hartog, was fabulous. Nick is personable, accommodating and works tirelessly. I honestly think he doesn't sleep! Needless to say we cannot wait to take another Ama Waterways River Cruise and would be afraid to try any other cruise line! Read Less

Having never been on any cruise and not wanting to be herded along, we were cautious about selecting a river cruise. We were three couples traveling together and knew where we wanted to go after some research. We chose AmaWaterways because it seemed to offer the most variety in tours. We were not disappointed. We booked almost a year ahead and included flights, transfers, and extra days in Prague. Everything was well planned from embarking to the flight home. The ship was well appointed and the cabins in a good location. All the staff was friendly, making me feel guilty for all the service. Meals were wonderful and the portions allowed you to eat everything but not feel overstuffed. The shore excursions were led by very knowledgeable tour guides at every place. We tried a hike, my husband a bicycle tour, in addition to the regular tours. The onboard entertainment was very good and the excursions fun. Our cruise manager Dragsn was professional and organized. It was a wonderful experience to visit Central Europe. Read Less

After much research and conversations with travel agent, decided on AMA Waterways and was not disappointed! It was a wonderful experience onboard the AMA Serena, cruising the Danube. Tours were very well organized with very knowledgeable local guides. The crew onboard was excellent, always smiling and pleasant and ever present to assist and answer any questions you may have. Embarkation very easy and organized and dining was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and enjoy very good food. Cabin was fairly spacious with a french balcony that afforded a lot of natural light and interesting passing scenery. Had a very early flight on disembarkation day and was escorted to airport with AMA representative and directed to correct kiosk and line for flight home. This overall was a very well organized experience from our pre-cruise time in Prague to leaving the ship. It was a very busy trip with a lot of walking, so if you are looking for a relaxing vacation, this is not it! Overall our experience was wonderful and we would definitely travel with AMA Waterways again! Read Less

My wife and I and another couple wanted to explore the Bordeaux region of France and also try out a river cruise. None of the four of us knew Bordeaux, AMA, or river cruising. The entire experience was delightful! First, the AMADolce is a wonderful ship. It was absolutely immaculate. Everywhere. From the moment our taxi pulled up to the embarkation area, the staff were immediately available to help with our luggage and escort us on board. Every single staff member we met throughout the week could not have been nicer or more professional. They were kind, fun, and anticipated every need. They immediately created a sense of family, warmth and care. The public spaces on the Dolce are beautifully decorated and comfortable. They were spacious. The amount of windows all over the ship contributed to a very open feeling. The dining room was always beautifully appointed with white linens and beautiful tableware. We were in Cabin 204, a category B room. When I was investigating the cruise and realized the cabin sizes were only 170 SQF, I was concerned that the room would be cramped and uncomfortable. While I can't say the room was spacious it was efficient. Beds were great, nice amount of space for hanging or laying out our clothes. The bathroom was very nice. Shower had various jacuzzi spray options. Water pressure was excellent. It was great having the double french windows in the Category B cabin. The opened up the space in the room a great deal. I wouldn't take another river cruise without having double sliding doors/windows like this. The cabin was serviced twice daily. I can see why there is a premium for cabins on the higher decks simply because when you are docked you can see out and over a little better. Cabin 204 was toward the front of the ship and I would opt for cabins toward the front, rather than the rear, when we go again. Dining on board was excellent. Wide selections for breakfast and lunch. Dinner choices each evening were varied with a chef's selection but also some great standard menu items. I would give the food quality a 4 out of 5 in the main dining room. Certainly very good and nothing to complain about but achieving 5 star food quality when serving so many guests would be difficult. We had dinner one evening in the Chef's table restaurant which accommodates about 16 people. It was excellent and I would rate that particular dining experience as a 5. The cruise itinerary itself was perfect. Enough time in ports to enjoy the very enjoyable shore excursions and also have free time as needed. And, enough time on the river itself to enjoy the cruising experience. What we all enjoyed so much was the intimacy with the water and one's surroundings that occurs on a river cruise. Unlike an ocean cruise where the water can be 12 decks below you, on a river cruise everything is right in front you at all times. It makes watching the world go by a very enjoyable experience as things change moment by moment. Our cruise manager, Elia, was absolutely outstanding. If there were any problems behind the scenes, one would never know. Elia had everything operating efficiently and she handled all our individual requests with grace and a smile. Captain Dany was a delight as were the rest of the crew. We can now see why so many of the new friends that we made on board had sailed with AMA previously. The experience was top notch in every way. Thanks, AMA, for a great time and a very memorable vacation. Read Less

We were invited by our good friends and experienced travelers to join them on a river cruise in France. We had never been on a cruise before so it sounded intriguing, especially with a couple that knew France as well as they did. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity. From the minute we stepped on board, we knew this was to be a special week. Immediately, the crew grabbed our luggage from the driver, and from that moment on, we were waited on hand and foot. While we haven’t cruised before, we’ve stayed in many fine hotels and I can say without reservation, this was the kindest, most thoughtful, happy staff and crew we’ve ever experienced. We knew immediately that this was a tightly run ship. The decor was first class. The ship was immaculate. And our room on the second deck was perfect. It’s amazing how we thought the room was going to feel small, and yet it was perfectly laid out in every way. We had traveled before coming to the cruise so had two big suitcases that slid under the bed with ease. The Mac computer mounted on the wall doubled as an onboard computer, as well as an entertainment center, the perfect size for the cabin. The two chairs were so comfortable and could face in to the room or out to the water, in front of nicely oversize sliding glass doors. I can’t tell you the delight we had when we were slipping through the water quietly, reading and watching the world go by. Indescribable! The bathroom was also super efficient and the shower was small but big enough, and amazing with multiple shower heads. We wanted to go home and remodel ours after it! And yet most of our time was out of the room. Everything about the public areas of the ship was inviting and relaxing. We loved spending time in the beautifully appointed lounge, surrounded by huge windows on both sides and a glass atrium type area in the front. The crew would always have a big smile and a hello when we passed. We spent some amazing relaxing time there talking with new friends or just reading and going through photos of our excursions. And the excursions were amazing! So well thought out, so efficient, never crowded feeling, never felt like we were being herded as I have heard about on cruises. It was just like going out with some friends. Four beautiful, comfortable tour buses would pull up at the end of the dock and we would enjoy absolutely the most knowledgable and professional tour guides we’ve ever experienced. Loved every one of them! The food was excellent throughout the trip! Breakfast was a delight, with lots of choices, lunches were surprisingly extravagant, and dinners were more like a really fine restaurant than what we expected for a larger number of people seated all at once. We have nothing but good to say about the food and the service. We loved our servers! We took photos with them and shared them with our friends. We hugged at the end of the week! Elia was our cruise manager. She is the picture of professionalism, knowledge of the cruise topics, and frankly, patience. We saw how she managed all of us, doing everything in her power to make sure every need was met and every request handled, even those that were not so reasonable. We were very impressed. We are now officially big fans of river cruising and especially AMA Waterways. I don’t know that we would risk not getting the same treatment on another cruise line knowing what we now know. And with all the repeat AMA cruisers we ran into, we know we are not the only ones thinking that way. Thank you to Captain Danny, Elia and the entire crew of AmaDolce. You gave us the experience of a lifetime. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise based on the dates we could travel easily. It was our first and it was fabulous. Embarkation was easy as can be. Our taxi was met by crew who took our luggage which magically appeared in our cabin. We traveled with my parents and we all wondered how our luggage got there... they checked off our names and we got on the ship and joined a cocktail party. The crew works nonstop and is always there to make your cruise the best it can be. The camaraderie amongst them is unmistakeable but not to the exclusion of the guests. You are quickly made to feel special and part of the AMA family. Our cruise director was Dejan Stancic who is very fun and while attending to many details is always smiling. He learns your name quickly and his announcements "Good morning my dear ladies and gentlemen" are both fun and informative. Sylvia, the hotel manager was responsible for most personnel it seemed and she was constantly checking on service and housekeeping in a firm, authoritative yet friendly manner. She's also a captain and it shows. Henk K was our captain and he too mingled from time to time as well. The bartenders and servers were so friendly, it felt like we were losing friends at the cruise end. These folks work 24/7 on back to back cruises and we never felt they were stressed or anything but friendly and kind. It's remarkable really. The cabins are laid out well with plenty of space for your belongings. They clean them daily and do turn down service, provide a daily planner and sometimes gifts! The tours were many and varied to match many wishes and the food was fantastic. It seemed as if there was some kind of meal or tea or snack available at all times. I'd go on another AMA cruise in a heartbeat. If I could figure out which one Dejan was on, I'd choose one of those. He's special. I'm not sure how he kept his mood up but he was always smiling and helpful while juggling many tours and groups. This is a great cruise line...looking forward to returning. Read Less

We chose AmaWaterways primarily because we felt they offered a mid to upscale experience and would be an excellent value. We were not disappointed and in fact in most areas the crew and staff far exceeded our expectations. First, the ship itself is impeccably maintained. Captain Henk Klos and his crew clearly had safety as their priority all the while being very gracious to all guests. The hospitality staff were extraordinary. The servers, housekeepers, chefs, bartenders and front desk staff were always helpful, informative, and friendly. They never failed to greet or acknowledge a passenger in the entire cruise. The food aboard ship was truly exceptional. Dinners were varied, themed to the locale, matched with local wines-which changed nightly, and delicious. The quality of the dining experiences greatly exceeded my expectations. Also, the wait staff were attentive and friendly (Our favorites-Alex in the dining room and Dada, our wine steward/bartender). We frankly did not avail ourselves of a lot of the onboard entertainment. We enjoyed local Hungarian dancers that came aboard just before we left Budapest and in Vienna we caught a bit of the classical music program, but we were commonly out on the decks enjoying the views. The shore excursions offer usually at least three choices, including a “gentle walkers” option. They are almost all at no additional cost. The local guides were good. But, unfortunately, the time in the various cities and towns just felt too rushed. I really wish we had another day in Vienna. Also Durnstein is a cute town but I would rather have spent more time at the Melk Abbey and these were a combined option. We did pay extra for a nighttime Mozart/Strauss concert in Vienna that was well worth the price. The Heuriger evening was included and a real joy, but again, a bit rushed. There is truly a delightful stop in Grein and the visit to the castle was surprisingly informative and the show featuring local dancers in the castle provided a wonderful memory. In summary, the service was impeccable, the food uniformly outstanding, and the experience unforgettable. We took advantage of AmaWaterways’ onboard 5% discount for a future cruise by making a deposit on our next trip with them Read Less

When we cruised the Danube on the AmaDolce it was one of the best trips we've ever taken. We knew we wanted to experience another river cruise and after much research we chose the Rhine. These two cruises are very different however, and what we loved about the Danube was not always present on the Rhine (plenty of time to enjoy the port cities for example). Despite the differences, we thoroughly enjoyed our time on the AmaSonata. It's a beautiful ship in perfect condition, staffed by dedicated and friendly professionals who really know how to make their passengers feel welcome. We spent several days in Amsterdam on our own before the cruise and hired our own taxi to the ship. If you don't use an Ama airport transfer to the ship, you can find the embarkation location printed one the cruise voucher. We arrived ahead of the 3 pm check in time, but embarkation was smoother than our previous experience. We waited in the lovely lounge where they had water, tea and cookies. Check-in includes having your photograph taken (later on, a credit card is requested prior to check-out). A crew member is assigned to each guest to carry the luggage and provide a cabin orientation. In our case, this crew member was one of the dining room wait staff. Later on the first day there is a Captain's welcome reception with drinks, introductions of key crew and a safety briefing. The ship is beautiful and it's kept spotless, inside and out. The lounge is where the tended bar is (hard liquor, beer and wine for purchase except for during meal times when beer and wine are complimentary), a piano, a buffet for the light meals and snacks, a very small gift shop (the prices were better or the same as shops in the cities), and a self-serve coffee/espresso/capuccino bar that is available 24 hours a day. The lounge seating is well thought out to accommodate everything from individuals to couples to larger groups, and large windows surround the area so everyone has a nice view. There is a small partitioned section with books and two couches. There is an elevator that accesses all levels, but does not go up to the sun deck. At the front of the ship is a covered area with tables and chairs and a wind screen. During rainy periods, this space becomes the smoking area. There is an automatic door leading to the front that allows the smoke to enter, so if you have a sensitivity to smoke consider sitting further back in the lounge during periods of rain. On top of the ship is the sun deck, a wonderful place to be if the weather cooperates. It has a good selection of varied seating, a track and stationary bike, a pool and an oversized chess set. The smoking area is at the very back of the sun deck. The wheel house is fully visible and our captain invited passengers to knock on the door to request a tour (any time except during lock passages). One thing Ama might consider doing is adding a binocular station on each side. There are so many castles on this ship it would be a nice addition for people who don't want to pack the added weight. There are thin flannel blankets provided on deck, but on our cruise most people used the wool blankets from the cabins. The fitness center is on the 3rd level, at the far end past the cabins. It is large and well equipped (actually rivals many hotels). There are also massage and hair style facilities. The Chef's Table restaurant is at the back with limited seating that requires reservations (a special set menu for the entire week that is different from the dining room). Also on this level are the desks for the manager of the hotel and the cruise director. The second level has two restrooms and a built-in watercooler at the entrance to the cabins. The main restaurant is on the lower level, which also contains cabins (accessed from a different stairway). There are two semi-private dining areas with tables for 8-10 at the front, six booths for 4 and tables from 4-8 inside. If traveling alone or as a couple, expect to join in at larger tables or be joined by someone. Seating is open and passengers begin to line up prior to meal times in order to sit in desired locations. The restaurant service is outstanding, both with wait and wine staff. They are skilled and do everything they can to accommodate requests. They are very pleasant and patient (some are really fun and interesting) and they are generous with the wine, extras, etc. I noticed that most people tended to pick a side and sit there every meal, often choosing the same tables and same dining companions. The food is very good, well prepared and beautifully presented and there is a lot of it - multiple courses including desserts. The food choices are generous and during breakfast and lunch the buffet in the center offers a huge array of self-serve options. These are in addition to the lighter fare that is made available throughout the day in the lounge. The wine choices were not as good on this cruise, and seemed to be less often the regional choice. There is entertainment daily, with the piano player in the afternoons and evenings except when they bring in performers. There were two especially good acts on our cruise, La Strada (two violins and a guitar - really outstanding) and a French singer and an accordionist. We were told that the main draw for this cruise for many passengers is the sailing through the Rhine Gorge, which has more than two dozen castles. It is beautiful and interesting and a very enjoyable part of the cruise. The shore excursions would benefit from longer times off the ship with the ability to wander, have a leisurely coffee or shoot pictures. Often, where we were docked over night and could have gone out, there was no place to go. There was a real sense of being rushed on the excursions. The city tour of Cologne was a disappointment, with an hour of walking and an hour in the cathedral, which was too long for a single structure. There were several excursion options in Rudisheim along with more free time, which made it a much better experience. The Heidelberg excursions include a long and strenuous hike that is great, but be aware that it leaves very little time to explore the city after, which is walkable and pretty (and for shoppers, quite a few stores in the market area). Strasbourg is another city that would benefit from longer time to explore. Riquewihr was wonderful and I would have loved to have an option to stay there for 4-5 hours, but again there was a sense of being rushed due to the 45 minute bus ride back to the docking location. The Rhine seems to have near constant cruising, with too little time to enjoy spots along the way. I heard several people complain about the sound of the engine on overnight cruises, though it didn't bother me. This may be a function of cabin location so if motion or noise is a problem be sure to ask your travel agent for cabin recommendations. This is a beautiful river and a very nice cruise. But if I were to recommend a cruise to someone I would recommend the Danube. Read Less
