My cruise was a surprise arranged by my friend. I was amazed. Arriving we were greeted by friendly porters and our suitcases were taken to our booked cabins. We then waited some time in five rows filling out paperwork before being served at a counter, then given further documents for customs. Staff were continually on hand to manage the rows. Once through Customs we walked towards the gangplank stopped to have our photo taken, then into the entrance area. We were greeted by friendly officers and staff and given directions to our cabin. During the seven days the cabin crew were efficient cleaning our cabin daily, replacing linen and tidying the cabin. The phone marking for enquiries was clear. We had a television and during the emergency gatherings we were told channel 41 contained a viewing of the ship. Unfortunately we learnt an inside cabin not having windows or a balcony encouraged us to walk down stairs or arrange a lift downstairs from deck six to deck three to view the marvellous ocean or see any action during sailing towards docks or leaving docks. I watched the ship leaving the dock in Melbourne and it was marvellous watching the men on the dock and the gang blank being lifted into the ship. Activities on board included, shows, staff employed to dance with ladies without partners or husbands, craft, card games, ping pong, massages, swimming, line and modern dancing classes, art training, tour of galleries, virtual bridge tours , gymnasiums, casino, bars, shops, violins, police bands, Irish dancers, international dancers, singers, harps and piano bar with trumpets. There was a black and white and a masked ball and judging. Staff were friendly and continually cleaning. Blankets for cold days on decks supplied. Any emergency was dealt with immediately. Embarking and disembarking off ship was well organised. with sanitizers for hand washing supplied on docks along with face washers with Dettol and cold water during hot days after excursions. Umbrellas were also supplied for the rainy day at Bernie. Days were busy with so many choices to make, walking up and down stairs for activities with crowded lifts at times and wonderful meals at the Britannia Restaurant. The ludo deck supplied snacks twenty four hours a day for staff and guests. The decor was opulent and relaxing. We all enjoyed dressing up for gala and ball nights while the masked ball was fun with people relaxing hiding behind well designed masks. The cruise was fantastic Read Less

Just back from this cruise, where a group of 10 celebrated a 60th birthday, food was less than appealing in the dining room, and concessions such as The Grill, where, as a person who is gluten intolerant, was not even asked or given a choice of a desert, but had a 3 day old creme brulee stuck in front of me. The dining room served a lump of congealed meat on a huge jacket potato and called it fine dining, and continued to attempt to fill already half filled wine glasses without consent. The Lotus Spa as always on these cruises spruiked the wonders of the Elemis detox, and hard sells with every supposed relaxing spa service. The entertainment was at best amateur, with 4 cruise staff being the majority of the events, not one top class act on board. A friend ended up in hospital on the last day after contracting a flu which caused a clot on the lung. After cruising many times, I would not be in a rush to book with Princess again, in fact, I doubt that I will bother at all, and continue to cruise with Carnival and Caribbean who at least offer top class entertainment, reasonable food and avoid the day spa services. Ports were the usual, with us missing The Sound due to weather, which could not be avoided, but they should change Port Chalmers to Napier as Chalmers is at best boring and unappealing. Read Less

I chose to do this cruise as I had never been on one before and thought a short one would be a good introduction. The overall cruise was lots of fun but there are some less than great things. This ship is the oldest and is about to be decommissioned, you can tell. The rooms look very tired and the colour scheme is so early 90's it sometimes hurts. But on the flip side, the bed was really comfortable and the shower was fantastic! The Pantry...This was really crap. The food that is included in your fare comes from here. Its fatty and made from low quality products. I struggled to find something that I wanted to eat. One dinner there was seriously nothing. I'm a dessert lover and often the desserts were really bland. The pannacotta was tasteless and the custard was so thin it wasn't even custard. The onboard activities were so much fun! Trivia and bingo were my favourite. The stand up comedians were also hilarious. The gym was basic but still very functional! I went every day. Now my number one peeve - up-selling of products! The seminars they run are a ploy to get you to buy something. I was really mad at this. Read Less

First cruise and I was terrified due to negative reviews on here. Our review...well we are now hooked....an amazing cruise. We ate everywhere...enjoyed it all. The ships crew are constantly cleaning to keep the ship presentable. The entertainment is amazing. Attend as much as possible. All incredibly enjoyable especial the Maquee live shows. Entertainment crew hilarious Mathew Dom Pablo Miguel etc. We had the smaller cheaper cabins which were perfect for our budget and needs....hot showers were amazing. Many reviews complained about the interior being old....well I'm no spring chicken either any more but it's how you present yourself and this ship is no different....the decor is gorgeous. We did a few pacific Islands and pre booked our tours through the ship and had a great time being emersed in the culture and saw some amazing scenery. All our kids 3-17 attended kids clubs Turtle cove HQ and HQ+ and loved it experience. We also had EDGE packages. These were prepaid great for 7-25yrs. Our adults would probably pay per session next time as didn't get the value from pre purchasing. Thankyou from the bottom of our hearts for your passion to serve. Sad to see you retiring but hope to travel again with P&O and see some familiar faces. Read Less

We selected this cruise as there was a Special pricing: Nearly 50% off!! So that being said " You do get What You Paid for " Cabin-Balcony was ok but the Balcony itself was rusty and not in the best condition. Our Dining service waiters-Second Sitting were excellent. Interacted with the guests and made dining a fun time. Me( male) and 6 ladies. 4 had never cruised before so to them it was great. Food was quite good considering the number of people being fed. We bypassed Akaroa due to weather conditions according to the captain. Akaroa you disembark via Tenders. However there was small rumour, not verified, that the reason for bypassing Akaroa was that there was a mechanical issue(fire?) and we had to stay overnight in Port Chalmers for repairs. I guess we will not know if this is correct or not. Entertainment: Showtime dancers, costumes and setting were excellent-to a degree!! Given that 60% of the guests were possibly 60 upwards shows were loud and very heavy. If there had been at least one show catering to nice , easy to listen to music it would have been a bonus. Trivia was the main focus during sea time but after doing Trivia 3 times enough is enough. Overall if you can get a discounted costing on Legend and are happy with a No Frills environment then this ship may be for you. However as we have been on Princess 4 times and Holland America 3 I would not go back to Carnival. Read Less

The crew, security and cleaning staff were all stellar. Melbourne folks are an absolute blast to party with. Carnival Liberty sells more alcohol than any other ship in the fleet largely due to the good folks from Melbourne's love for celebrating life to the fullest! If your looking for a glass-half-full trip then this is the one. It's also largely suitable for families, we could see no evidence of any impropriety.. just great great times. Truffles restaurant was great and they would break the dinner up with their dancing cabaret through the enthused diners. We didn't really try the buffet up on the Lido deck except for cooked breakfasts. The staff were so very courteous and helpful. They made the whole experience very personable one which I really love. The best advice I can give is don't try to participate in all the activities all the time - you will exhaust yourself. Just pace yourself and give yourself a little buffer to go and enjoy the view of Bass Straight from the observation deck. Read Less

A friend booked this trip for 10 friends - the food at the 'Pantry' was dreadful - the food at the preferred seating Restaurant was hit and miss although more miss - I did not see any passenger use the sanitizer in fact there was no Staff to ensure it was used. You could not use the two spas as Parents would leave their young children in their me then wander off, at one stage I counted fifteen children sitting in and around a spa never again, would I ever use Pacific Jewel or any in this fleet. I have been on five cruises by different lines and ha e me r experienced such poor service and t times rude staff - I have been on Royal Caribbean, Princess and Celebrity Cruises which are far superior to what I experienced on the P&O Pacific Jewel I am afraid I could never recommend P & O - most went back to use their own bathrooms because the public bathrooms were beyond words Read Less

Needs to be put to rest... Drown it. Rooms were fine...except they are not sound proof..use your imagination. Staff talk about you in their own language... How is that even allowed?? It was beyond obvious... I challenged two female staff...asked them what they had just said about me...they denied it... Hello... It was beyond obvious.. Had the drinks package..omg was told off for sculling.. I don't drink that much...i would not even have used up the package or got my value's worth... What a joke. Yep... I do scull my first 2 drinks because i'm thirsssssty ..... By no means drunk then usually stop or slow down... I wasn't drunk at alllll on the whole journey. Most staff were polite. Went to reception to complain...they took the waiters side... Serioulsly?? Happened a few times to me...however ...not my friends...who are huge drinkers...me.. I think they flagged my card. Ruined the whole cruise for me... I WAS VERRRRY UPSET Some staff rude beyond words... Talk back to you when challenged. We know and expect P&O cruises to be a 3 star cruise line so we don't have high expectations we mainly cruises with them at this time of year for covenience cruised on the same ship the year before and really enjoyed the New Years atmosphere this cruise was so different it was as if P&O are trying to save a few extra dollars again noticed less options in the Pantry (the buffet replacement ) to the year before usually 3 types of eggs on offer now only 2 each morning on the breakfast menu also at lunch and dinner not as many dishes on offer at dinner lots of people enjoy taking cheese and biscuits back to their cabins to have for supper but they keep the sliced cheese hidden in a fridge at the Kettle and Bun sandwich ,soup, salad bar. You don't ask you don't get'. meals at the Waterfront restaurant were nice went Twice to Salt grill extra costs $49.99 pp for tea worth every cent cabin was great BA balcony a couple of doors down from last year drink service on the pool deck was very slow seemed like not enough staff to take your drink orders although the staff coped the best they could it was sometimes faster to go to the bar to order your own drinks maybe this due to the new all inclusive drinks package and more people ordering it met some fantastic people on board and attended some great acts and shows in the theatre including Steady Eddie we had priority embarkation at checkin within 10 min we were in our cabin baggage arrived 5 min later Read Less

Short version - the title says it all - your paying tiger air prices expect tiger air standards Long version - Ok as long as your expectations arent too high. A lot of the "entertainment" is soft sell infomercials. (not always totally soft sell either) Everything above the very basic is extra - right down to having a hot dog, or a burger. Dont think you can have a bottle of a wine that is special to you - they charge $15 corkage - or it is seized till you queue to get it back at the end - dont worry - you get good at queues. Get to the music events etc that you want to see early - there are never enough seats or tables. Bag of chips $7.50 - no wonder they wont let you bring anything on! Be aware they will not let you join friends unless you walk in the dining room together , and you cant save spots for breakfast of lunch. If you are a bigger group you need to have someone at the booking area right at 5,30pm the previous night or you will only get 8pm sittings. Basically everything is designed to run it as tight and cheaply as possible - its how they get it so cheap, but you do feel it at times, and I found it trying that there is no flexibility in the systems. Ship tired but very clean. Staff very mixed - I saw some very rude customers (cmon people your not on the QE2 get over yourself) but I also saw and experienced some incredibly rude staff - I was told they hate the cruises with grog packages and we were directly after one so they were tired. Im sorry others were horrible - but please dont take it out on me. All up I wouldnt travel with them again - but they are what they are and will suit many. Read Less

Crystal Symphony cruise departing on January 5, 2017 I chose the cruise for two reasons. One was the ports of call and the area that the cruise was visiting. The other was the fact that it was a bridge cruise and I wanted to but participate in playing bridge and learning bridge I loved the luxury of the cruise. The service was excellent especially the young lady who took after me in my room when I was sick for a few days. The food actually was not up to my measure I guess because I really don't like complicated foods and very often I would order something that did not meet my expectations All in all I would cruise with Crystal again. It is nice to be taken care of and envjoy and such luxury The two is provided by the crews were excellent and certainly meant by expectations, they were well organized and well thought out . My only criticism and it is a serious one is that when I had my hair washed and blown out I was offered a little special conditioner and a teeny tiny tube. I was told that they wash and blow out what's going to cost me $43. When they showed me the bill they had added an extra $76 for this exceedingly tiny little tube of something. I should have complained but it was the last day of the cruise and I didn't have the opportunity. However I I will send a letter to the cruise company because I thought this was an out rages rip off Read Less

Cruising is the restful holiday that I needed after a busy year at work. The Golden Princess gave me that. Our cabin C705 was located on deck 10 just across from the aft lifts. It had a comfy bed was clean and fairly roomy. Our balcony was larger than our friends who had a mini suite on deck 9 and large than the balcony on 11 and 12. we had half covered area and half open it was a bit more private than 9 as we looked straight down to theirs. ( not that we used it very much but probably would of if travelling alone) Rome service was basic but free and we used it a couple of times for convenience on port days. The service was fab the food was varied and great. We purchased the drinks card and for us it was fantastic not having to worry about anything. The cocktails were a hit we defiantly found the card worthwhile as only a couple of bottles of water $4 a coffee or two $4 a couple of beers and a couple glasses of wine and a Baileys or two was more than what it cost for the Drink card. Most cocktails were just under $14 and there was a heap to choose from but we managed to try most of them. So if you are wondering whether to go with that I would recommend0. They do have happy hours at the bars two for one but they looked crazy busy and having the card was like one big happy hour if you want that or just a few and it's just as good. There was something to do for all of us to make our holiday one to remember. The staff were so attentive and were always cleaning and sterilising after the cruise before us had gastro through it. The ship was great it was clean and comfortable although a little dated. The WIFI was $99 for 200 mins which is quite expensive I think these days it should be free for travellers. The Lotus Spa treatments were wonderful but the after product sales push ruined the whole experience we didn't go back there. The massage was $150 with mini facial but the products they pushed were another $259 and they pushed hard. Beware. The onboard purchase of excursions were really expensive. We managed to hire cars and book with local company's for a third of the price for a similar tour. Try an app called Viator they had some great onshore excursions. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship though. every time we docked the locals offered tours as well but we booked ours on line to make sure we saw what we wanted to see. Overall it was great a we would go on Golden again. Read Less

After reading a few negative reviews of Pacific Eden I was a bit worried about the cruise which I had booked to celebate my 50th birthday with 12 girlfriends, but I need not have worried - it was fantastic! From the moment we boarded I was impressed by the modern decor in the public areas and the cabin was quite roomy and very clean, as was the bathroom. I had read on these reviews that you need to book the restaurants early, so luckily we did that soon after boarding (they do fill fast) and were able to secure bookings for Dragon Lady and Angelo's, great ambience in these restaurants much more intimate than the usual large dining rooms on cruise ships and the food was great, some dishes not amazing but with no surcharge we had no complaints. Loved the entertainment, and with the roof over the Lido deck the Gatsby and Bianco nights were fantastic, even when it was pouring with rain on the night of our Bianco party it made no difference because of the roof. Oasis pool out the back was great for sunbaking as we were lucky to have some great weather as well. The pantry food is great as well, it was only a short cruise so didn't have a chance to get bored with the food, everything I had was fine and never had a problem finding a table. The staff were lovely, no complaints there either. Read Less

My Husband & I were excited but a little anxious about heading on a planned P&O trip due to the regular negative feedback people had left on P&O Facebook page! We decided it will be what we make of it! Sorry about the essay but our trip was 98% positive keep reading! Here is our review: We have just returned from comedy 'taster cruise' off Melbourne on the Pacific Jewel. We were in a level 5 'budget' cabin after purchasing a deal from scoupon. Our cabin was fabulous, easy to get to, clean, comfortable bed, tidy, good view & had everything we needed. Even the cloth shower curtain didn't get stuck to you (as they do.) Our room stewardess Liza was most attentive & made sure our every need was met! Her towel art- very cute & clever! Note: Tip your steward in person! In fact, all of the staff couldn't do enough for you, most of them loved their jobs! The entertainment/shows/bands were all great & there was a huge variety of things to do included in your ticket price!! Yes you had to pay if you wanted to do bingo, casino, some craft, & adventure activities (if you didn't everyone's ticket price would be higher!) There was so much to do at times there wasn't time to stop without 'missing something!' Now for the food..... I am a chef & we found the food to be good. The Pantry is a novel idea for a buffet, it allows for a variety of food without a single queue everyone lined up in. Indian, Asian, fish/chips/pizza Mexican, Roast, salads/soup/ sandwiches & of course dessert!! In 3 days I wasn't able to try everything, however the food we had was hot, tasty & better than the 'buffet slop' some places dish up. We were quite annoyed at the constant whinging & comments about the food onboard!! Folks you need to remember the chefs are feeding 2000 people every meal sitting for a DAILY budget of at a guess $15-$20pp at most!!! What do you expect?? One thing I will say is I hope they change variety of dishes more often on a longer cruise. However, like I said above, because we were there only 3 days we didn't have to eat the same thing twice (unless we wanted to!) The Waterfront restaurant was available unlimited (you could eat here every meal if you wanted) for a 3 course meal breakfast/lunch/ dinner for no addition cost. I would describe this as 'formal dining' with budget A La Carte food. You needed to book a table in this restaurant which had staggered times (the booking process was a little clunky & could use a little work)- more complaints heard (again how many meals do you think chefs can prepare at once!) The service was fabulous and staff were almost too attentive, the meal's we had were served quickly, were nice & presented well. The steak was cooked med/rare but was chewy, however it wasn't eye fillet or scotch so difficult to make tender!! The other courses spot on! Overall we had a positive experience & really enjoyed ourselves. We have picked up lots of tips for a longer cruise next time! As for all the 'negative Nancy's' out there you're never going to be happy as you clearly want champagne on a beer budget!!! Remember you get what you pay for! Read Less

We had several grievances. The staff & crew were not at all welcoming they seemed tired and unhappy "just doing the job" attitude. The entertainment was extremely average the same two duos in the bars twice a day for the whole ten days, same pianist/vocalist in the same bar twice a day for ten days- yawn, same mediocre four piece band ( vocalist didn't know the lyrics a lot and read them on iPad), several acts in main Marquees room by the same group if young adults. Saving the boredom was a new act that came on at Adelaide was Donna Campbell doing a Dolly Parton act she was really good but only twice. They saved heaps on entertainment. Food was fantastic! Even though there was a bun fight every night at the 7.30 session at the Waterfront, we changed to 5.30 to avoid this every night. The gym is tiny, claustrophobic and hot with same music played continuously. No message service on the house phones to contact friends. No happy hour. Rooms were really good, spacious and clean with good beds. Need more signage on board people getting lost constantly. All in all paid good money for a budget time. No way we are going P&O again. As a group we chose this cruise for a New Years eve and cruise along to South Australia and back. Amazing that it took two days to reach Tasmania from Melbourne. We had a balcony cabin midships as we would normally do on our cruises. Cabin presentation was reasonable but like the rest of the ship, it is suffering from age and lack of attention to maintenance. Everywhere you go you can easily see rusted areas that have (if lucky) been roughly painted over without proper preparation, broken fittings and generally sloppy presentation care. evening meals was an experience! Waiting in long queues in the hope of getting a table was a totally new experience for us on a cruise ship and this even though we had booked time slots. typical of most cruise ships, the so called duty free shopping is just an excuse to work back from the ever mythical RRP but in reality no bargains to be had and not even from the Chinese junk clothing sale held to try and attract market place buyers was worth while. Food areas shut down early where on other cruises we have been on here and Europe, many are open late including free ice-creams, hamburgers etc. but not on this ship. If you want one of those things, you pay and pay. You guessed it, we are not using this ship again and will more carefully vet the next cruise to ensure the experience is not repeated. Wee do not mind paying for our cruise but value for money must come into the equation and here the balance was no where near correct. Read Less

Hi, all you cruise lovers, this was my seventh cruise and first and last with P&O. I have travelled on Royal Carribbean , Carnival cruise lines and Princess Cruise lines so I had a good yardstick beforehand to compare cruise companies. First of all a brief background of the events leading up to this cruise. Initially this was meant to be a 3 day cruise departing on Thursday 10th December 2015 that was to just sail around the Bass Strait out of Melbourne and was highlighted as a "Comedy Cruise" and was a so called cruise sampler holiday. However, due to engine trouble in Sydney, the Pacific Jewel was delayed a day from arriving in Melbourne and my cruise was cut short to 2 days, instead departing on the Friday. To there credit P & O were good in communicating the problem, we were notified by email and text message at 9 am on Wednesday morning, 24 hours before the scheduled departure that the ship would be delayed a day and were offered an extra $50 onboard credit and refund of one nights cruise fare OR a complete cancellation or refund if I desired it. I chose to continue with the shortened cruise as I really wanted to sample what P & O were about as I had never cruised on any of their ships. Well getting down to the nitty gritty of the cruise. I had a disabled stateroom as I am partly wheelchair bound, the stateroom was fine and rather nice, no issues with it, the door however could have been wider, anyone who had an electric gopher/scooter would never fit it through this cabin's door. I was registered as a disabled passenger but customer service and assistance at embarkation and debarkation was non existent, luckily I had an able bodied friend travelling with me who was able to provide all the help I needed but really P & O you are meant to help your disabled passengers when boarding and getting off, you expect service on a cruise ship. As for the ship itself, there were a number of irritations that P & O need to re-think on. Getting into "Fine dining" you had to book the day before to get a seat, you were never allocated the same meal time or same table, one night I could not get my dinner to 8.30 pm, it was terrible. On other cruise lines, you were allocated the same table and same meal time and sat with the same passengers and able to make friends, not this chopping and changing thing that happens on P & O, I hated it. The ship is really too small to cope with all the passengers, the dining venues are small, the main theatre is small and there is a lack of seating in public areas to cope with all the passengers, you could never find a seat at night. The quality of the food is fine and acceptable, I have eaten better on other cruise lines. The old adage "you get what you pay for" never rings more true than with P & O, it seems to be everything on the boat is extra...it's just pay...pay..pay. What is included as standard food on other cruise lines, you had to pay extra for, for example a pizza was $9 AUD and a hamburger, the price was insane, a plate of prawns was $15. The price of stuff in the gift shops was more expensive than other cruise lines too. The Pacific Jewel is a floating white cash box on the sea, just because the cruise fare is sometimes cheaper than the opposition, it is made up for by all the extras you pay for which are free on other ships from competing cruise lines. On the first night sailing out of Melbourne, I had the most horrid experience in all my time of sailing on cruise lines with sea sickness. The water was rough and this ship does not seem to have good stabilisation, I was violently ill with vomiting and diarrhea at the same time, so was my friend with me and half the ship too, it was just horrible, I took plenty of anti-nausea pills, I have been on some rough seas but never anything like this, it seems this ship, you feel every wave that hits. On the entertainment side, the comedy was mediocre and crude, maybe as I get older I am becoming square ( I am only 38 years old ), I found the jokes full of sexual innuendos to be tiresome and not really funny. In summary with all that is wrong with P & O and the rocky ship, I would never travel with this cruise line again, the sampler cruise was an eye opener and stomach churner but never again P & 0, you have a lot to do to lift your game to match Carnival Spirit or Legend or Royal Carribbean ships. We booked a 4 berth cabin all paying the special price of $355 each, friends a couple of weeks before the cruise got a twin share for $190 each with an added a $25 upgrade to a room with a balcony. One member of our group injured themselves after booking and ended up wearing a boot and needing assistance (wheel chair). I rang and spoke to staff about maybe needing a more suitable room. I was told check when you board. When boarding, Was told check at reception. Reception placed us 2nd inline for a room upgrade come back after 7pm. We had boarded at 11.30. So couldn't really settle in room. I checked after 7pm to be told that we could be upgraded to twin share rooms for an extra $350 per person. Of course we didn't take them up of their ridiculously priced offer. It seemed they were all very helpful getting the wheelchair person on and off the boat but didn't care once she was on it. Food in the waterfront restaurant was awful. Prawn salad entree consisted of about 4 shrimp, a bit of lettuce, mayo and 2 finger sized sticks of toast. Pork belly was a very dry marinated pork fillet. The pantry was no betterr. We were told by a staff member that reception is open all night. NO it's closed 12- 6am. The staff are very friendly and only passing on decisions re room made by supervisors an above, so you cant blame them. The comedians were very funny and highlight of the cruise. Huge lack of communication regarding boarding passes and departing passes. Whats with being asked to leave your bags out the night before you depart??? Unfortunately the 1st night was cancelled due to engine trouble, we had bad weather the first night, it was very rough and many were sick, a little better the second and of course the day you get off at 8am its 31 degree's and beautiful. Don't think I'd do it again. Read Less
