Just returned on the 5th August after a weeks cruise on the marella spirit. Was very apprehensive about going after reading the latest reviews. I would just like to say ignore all the negative reviews as there was nothing to complain about. Yes the ship is tired in some areas but made no difference to us. Firstly check in at the port was excellent and cabin was ready and luggage delivered to our room promptly. The room had a double wardrobe and plenty drawer space. The staff on board can not do enough for you and are constantly cleaning the ship. The food was of good choice and always hot, not like previous reviews have said about food being cold. There were always a lot of people around the pool area but we always got a sun bed on the top deck, enabling us to see the amazing sites and the sights as we were sailing out of port. We were all inclusive but if you wanted eg corona, magners etc then you had to pay £2.30 and the odd cocktail had a £2.30 supplement. We had the odd drink we paid for but mainly had a/i drinks which were good. There was always a cocktail of the day to choose from. Also if you order soft drinks they are for example pepsi, sprite, fanta etc. The resident band Strum Jam were amazing as were the entertainment team. We went in the show bar a couple times, very good shows. We had an amazing time and compared to the cruise we did in October last year on the discovery I would say they were both on par, apart from a better selection of a/i drinks on the discovery, but made no difference to us. To be positive. Single cabin very clean. Medium sized bed. It also seemed to be good value for money for a single cabin (prior to boarding). No tips. Good and friendly cabin "porters". Negatives. Cabin decor dismal. Small. TV poor. Low deck. Bad noise and awful vibration from the engines; especially in port. This vibration affected the whole ship but because these single cabins are lower in the decks affect was much worse. I can only describe it like sitting on a washing machine. I was told (by customer service) this should have been pointed out at the time of sale - it was not! In fact, it was sold as a single cabin with external porthole e.g. outside. Reception/Customer Service was dreadful. I offered to pay for upgrade (of course this would have depended on value) given the manner of vibration I said I would sleep in the lounge if I wasn't given a change of cabin. Despite offers to review this I was effectively ignored and even when given deadlines for resolution none were forthcoming after 24 hours and I had to chase. Was told that rooms were full. Fortunately, the vibration was not as violent when the ship sailed and I did get more accustomed to it; but not good enough. I asked to speak to the reception manager and the staff effectively blocked this. I am sure the manager had told staff not to put complaints through to her. Ineffective manager. Probably afraid of dealing with complaints and, thus, pushes these to her staff. One central american girl was very good and tried her best but the rest ineffective. As a single traveller, I rely on the activities to meet other people. On other cruises, there have been choirs, dancing, crafts and daily single meets. Fantastic holidays for single people. On this cruise there were none (one line dancing class; one singles meeting in front of reception and I was the only one who turned up. Nobody asked me why I was sat there alone by reception staff so I left). Most of the activities were expensive tours; and mainly sitting on a coach. I did go on one horse riding tour in Menorca which was fantastic. I do not enjoy evening cabarets and tend to relax in my cabin in the evenings; what a joy given the ambience etc. of the cabin as described. The weather was not good enough to sit on deck so I was in my room from 7/8 each evening. The cycling tours appeared a good option. I am not a good cyclist which I discussed with the tour leader e.g. which was the best tour for an inexperienced cyclist not good with hills. Recommendation was Valencia tour. He asked if I could balance on a bike; which I can. On the day, he "assessed" my cycling ability (in front of the other cyclists) and as I could not use the gears properly he said I was not good enough and must return the bike to ship (with money refunded). I lost two hours that morning and the opportunity for other tours. I spent the day walking to Valencia and back; alone as I had no other plans and needed the exercise. When I suggested to him that he needed another assessment method his response was he could only do that by seeing people ride; and that 15 mile ride should have been indicative. I am fit and regularly walk 12 miles +. What about simply saying that only experienced cyclists can go! I enjoyed seeing the different ports and wide variety of food (although it was not hot and vegetables under-cooked for me), I did see cabins on other, higher decks, which were perfectly acceptable (although I know these would be more expensive). They had a seating area, for example. Check in and check out was great. Flights were extremely delayed but one in flight very good. The holiday overall could have been much better. Having a decent cabin would have gone a long way towards the other weaknesses. I could only class this as a budget cruise compared to other cruises. To be fair the price was less than my other cruises given that all cruises sting singles for high supplements. . As it was, I was glad to get home! I had seen other reviews about these issues but chose to ignore them because it had been recommended to me. Read Less

This was my first time as a solo passenger so that's why I picked the 5 night and am so glad I did I found the ship to be very tired with not much happening for a solo passenger. I usually cruise with P&O and will definitely go back to them. I was in cabin 5211and although it was quite spacious it was very noisy, the shower room had an unpleasant odour and only one socket worked so had to boil the kettle and change to charge anything else. The food was ok nothing special the only redeeming thing was the staff were very pleasant, would I go with Marella again that would be a definite no there was no ship map in the cabin which would be very handy as the signs around the ship only told you what was on that deck but not direction you should be heading. I've been on all the present fleet apart from Discovery 1 which is of course the sister ship of Discovery 2, the ship is easy to get around with plenty of lifts all quite spacious. Travelling on my own for the first time as a senior widowed male I found everyone quite friendly and although I never ventured into the main restaurants I found the Island Restaurant quite acceptable for my needs and the food was always of a good standard and variety. My Cabin on deck 3 was the best single cabin I have had as a solo traveller over the last 7 or 8 years ( previous cruises always had companions on-board) quite spacious and loads of drawers and hanging space, only gripe was the extraction in the shower room was very weak and did not clear the steam away from showering, I complained about this and although the maintenance engineer came he could not improve the situation, so found myself stepping out into the cabin to dry off, easy if your on your own!! The show lounge was very comfortable and the singers and dancers were of the usual high standard you expect from Thomson, the rest of the entertainment team were all very acceptable but I thought the solo saxophonist played for himself accompanied by backing tracks and it was unbearable, I never heard him play any melodic numbers at all, it was all Jaz stuff which the majority of patrons don't understand, he never spoke and I never heard anyone applaud him. The pool area was very good and spacious with plenty of sunbeds and chairs in the shaded areas below the top deck, the large screen display meant you could see any demonstrations easily from wherever you were without crowding around the stage to see what was going on. The Surf & Turf and Kora La dining as well as the Main restaurants I never used, being on my own, but I spoke to many cruisers who all recommended them. The all inclusive drinks package was very good and there was free ice cream available, The introduction of the Snack Shack was a novel and well used feature, the free cabin safe also saved me £25 but the single supplement is as always a sore point for me, why I have to pay £65 a night extra when i only eat for one drink for one use hot water and bedding for one I will never understand, the Greed of Thomson / Tui I suppose, I feel as if I am paying for my wife who sadly I have no longer by my side. We were first time cruisers and really nervous of what to expect after reading some of the reviews. We were pleasantly suprised and enjoyed our holiday immensely. Our cabin boy Nasrun was so lovely and helpful nothing was too much trouble for him. There was nothing about the dining or entertainment that you could complain about it was like a 5 star hotel. We chose the cruise because of the countries which we wanted to visit and were over the moon bar one which was Morrocco although it was classified as safe to visit we didn't feel very safe when went into the main town area. However we were very pleased with our Captain John he gave us updates when he could about all sorts of information regarding the sailing conditions and the weather when we arrived at the port. We would definitely would sail with Thomson fleet again in the near future. Read Less

booked with friends who had been before.loved it all crew were very friendly and helpful.. cabin was comfortable and well stocked with tea coffee and milk. cabin stewards were friendly and cheerful. ship was comfortable my view was it is old and like all of us showed a few signs of age.The dining room was clean well ventilated and the serving staff were very attentive. food was varied and excellant i was spoiled for choice. shows in the broadway were amazing thoroughly enjoyed the blues brothers and the westend show songs.Trips ashore were well organized and enjoyable. I found Lisbon to be noisy with lots of roadworks but they are doing a new road layout.Marrakech being an animal lover I didnt like to see monkeys wearing nappies but as long as they are looked after that it is their living I suppose. Being ex navy my favourite place was Gibraltor home from home. Monkeys were little sods but funny.I like the idea of an adults pool area where I can chill out. The flight was very comfortable.I will go again with Thomsons Read Less

SeaDream cruises are incomparable if service is concerned. You are really pampered with such a crew to passenger ratio, so that everyone is recognized and addressed by name once embarked. Unlike other ship's smiling faces aimed for a tip, on SeaDream every gestures are from the heart and every effort is made to make you happy. The dinner is also among the best if not the outright best, with best ingredients and innovative cuisine, and really professional white-grove service. The open air breakfast is always memorable. It is 'yachting' not cruising, so you can expect a lot of differences and once you are on it you may like it best, even addicted to the experience, or otherwise. Yes there is no real entertainment as such and the cabins have no balcony, but all these become immaterial to me and I always have the best cruising experience on SeaDream, now my third cruise. They have specialties that you do not find in any other ship such as water sport facilities. Passengers are youngish comparing with other 5 star ships and people mix and become friends when disembark. Because of the ship's small tonnage I had the best itinerary in the Med unmatched and unmatchable by any ship even slightly larger. Cannot be better for a one week cruise and all that I regret is that it is far too short! Read Less
