Chose this because of the attractive itinerary, plus the convenience of sailing from UK port with no flights involved. As seasoned cruisers for many years ( principally with Thomson / Marella and NCL) we tried CMV for the first time this year. I will start with the positives:- There is a good staff to passenger ratio, and we found the service was good across all departments. The cabin (6131) was spacious and clean, and well serviced by our cabin steward on a daily basis. The food was of an acceptable quality, and well presented, and served hot. The itinerary was good, with adequate time ashore in each venue. The DISembarcation at Liverpool was very speedy, and we were on the train home in little more than an hour after disembarcation commenced. Now for the negative points. We attended the cruise terminal at Exactly the time given by CMV, Only to find that RED label had already been boarded 1/2 hour earlier, which resulted in some delay to us boarding. The boarding process struck us as being very poorly organised. The dining allocation in the Kensington restaurant, (we opted for the smaller table) was bench seats either side of the table ( 3 people each side) which was very cramped and uncomfortable. We both made the observation that this seating would be more appropriate in a Wetherspoons Pub! On the 2 venues that required tender service the wait was unacceptably long ( 3hrs. in the Scilly Isles, and one and a 1/2 hrs at Guernsey ) This obviously had a detrimental effect on our time ashore. There is considerable room for improvement here. The evening entertainment in the main show lounge was very poor by cruise ship standards. The last evening on board was a "formal" night where passengers dressed for the occasion for the advertised "Gala Dinner" This was quite a damp squib---- The only thing "Gala" about it was the baked alaska dessert. This is not what we are used to on other cruise lines in the same price bracket. To sum up, if you are looking for a no frills cruise from a uk port with no flying involved, then go for it, but there are better deals out there with other companies. Read Less

We were a group of six friends on the Scottish Isles 8 night cruise from Newcastle finishing somewhat bizarrely in Liverpool. Embarkation was extremely fast and painless. We are gold members and have priority boarding but everyone was boarded quickly. As soon as the car pulled up our luggage was taken and we never saw it again until it was in our cabin. We have been on 4or 5 CMV cruises and enjoyed them all but predominantly on some of the fleets older ships. Whilst the Magellan is not new it is in good condition very quiet and stable. We were upgraded to a superior inner room so didn’t have to row on this trip(we always choose the voyager guarantee and have never failed to get a decent cabin. The food was very good even if the portions weren’t huge but after 5courses I had had enough. We all had a drinks and tip package which I thought was exceptional value. The house wines were ok and all the usual branded spirits available though it seemed odd to me that some coffees were chargeable. We tended to use the main dining room for dinner/ lunch and the bistro for breakfast. We tried the main restaurant for breakfast but the service was too slow for us. The entertainment does seem a bit like a lot of singing and dancing but in different costumes each night but it was light and reasonably proficient We had a comedian for two nights who was OK. He clearly had been doing cruise ships for some time and his material showed this. We weren’t onboard much during the day so didn’t take advantage of the other activities onboard. We won the quiz on the first night but quit while we were ahead. First port was Dundee where we saw a quite a large exchange of passengers. Weather was good so we strolled ashore visited the Discovery and the new V&A (great outside but much wasted space inside) but an enjoyable hour and a half. We also visited Broughty Ferry Castle which was worth a visit. Next stop was Shetland where the weather was a bit wet but we still managed a significant Lerwick town trail walk which now includes Jimmy Peres’s House from the Shetland TV series. Next stop was the Faroes where we had a 35 minute shuttle bus ride to Torshaven which was interesting in itself. We enjoyed another walk around the town looking at some of the older properties with their distinctive grass roofs. An enjoyable day out. Orkney was our next stop in cloudy weather. We have been to Orkney a couple of times so dint see the need to visit scara brae which we would have if it had been our first visit. We were fortunate to witness what seemed the wedding of the year at the cathedral. We also witnessed the “ blackening” of another engaged couple which seemed to involve sitting in the back of an open truck which friends covered in molasses, gunge etc roaring around the town making a lot of noise. The poor groom to be was cling filmed to a stone cross in the churchyard but was freed before the wedding party arrived. A beautiful day and we arrived in sunny Skye to be tendered ashore to meet up with our prearranged tour bus. This was a private tour (sky mini bus tours)for the six of us (£42 each ) and it was really excellent. The beautiful weather helped as did the two knowledgeable locals who did the driving and guiding. We stopped at all the usual sights some of which were quite busy it being a Sunday and having excellent weather. We had a lovely lunch in an old hunting lodge called Flodigarry House which also had Flora McDonald's house in the grounds. The bus dropped off at the docks for our tender. - an excellent all day trip. Next stop Belfast in mixed weather. Here we enjoyed the hop on hop off bus (we negotiated £50 for six old fogies!). We did the full tour then got off at the Titanic exhibition which was excellent. That took a couple of hours but I really enjoyed it as it was a lot to do with the history of Belfast rather than just the sinking and subsequent recovery of the ship. It even included a mini Disney like shipyard ride. On the bus watch out for low hanging branches as my pal had his glasses and heating aid knocked off!!! Then on to Liverpool. Disembarkation was not so smooth due to not using the Ships tannoy to tell you what was happening ( it could be that as we were docked the ship was not allowed to so not to disturb the locals) it meant passengers were constantly querying why they couldn't leave the ship, pa better presence with better communication would have sorted it. There were some anxious passengers needing to catch a train/coach who were left in the dark. A very enjoyable cruise with excellent food and service - pity about the weather!!! Read Less

Actually chose this cruise due to an engine failure on one we booked. Interesting ports around the Uk where few other ships go. Though this is an old ship from Carnival, it was well maintained and clean. Had an inside cabin on deck seven, and was larger than those on Crystal! Food was surprisingly good, especially the dinners in the restaurants. Restaurants were also open for breakfast and lunch and were expertly staffed. Great place to go if one wants to beat the crowds at the main buffet. Drinks were well priced, and did not include a tip. One could actually get a pint of larger (German) for 3 pounds 60 pence! Tours were also top notch. Payment for these were from 40-70 pounds. Only problem I had was with the crew members that were not involved with the passengers (stewards-wait staff, etc) Many could not understand English-tough to communicate with. Read Less

I chose this cruise as it gave us five full days in Iceland among other ports of call. Iceland was fantastic, as were Shetland and Faroe Islands. Nothing happening in Invergordon, so best to take a tour from there. I knew the CMV Magellan was an older ship, only rated 3.5, so I didn't have high expectations. However, although the ship looks rather dated, the cabins were clean and functional and the meals at the restaurants were good - only average at the buffet. Where the cruise really fell down was the lack of organisation and planning for the activities. Most activities were a non-event, but listed every day in the program as an "unhosted" timed activity, e.g. Knit & Natter, Library, table tennis. Other activities were scheduled inappropriately, eg "Chance to Dance" - on twice nightly (not live music though) - both scheduled while passengers were either at the Show or at dinner! One night there was a display of the Chef's food presentation skills at 10.15 pm, when 2nd sitting guests were just leaving dinner. Why would they want more food and why would 1st sitting guests want a second dinner? There was also a dress up "School Disco" scheduled for 10.30 pm at night. The average age of the passengers was about 80!! The activities themselves were described by one fellow passenger as more attuned to occupational therapy activities in a Nursing Home. I couldn't agree more. They were insulting and very uninspiring. The restaurants were quite good, but staff couldn't organise seating. Many tables of eight only had two or four people on them, despite wanting a full table. It wasn't good enough to book seating six months prior. The nightly Entertainment Shows were mediocre. Although many individual staff were quite friendly, the majority of staff and entertainers seemed unhappy in their jobs. Also, I would not recommend booking a "Guaranteed Ocean View" cabin. We were allocated one right in the bow of the ship, with a porthole! We ended up having to pay about 900GBP to upgrade to a mid ship cabin with a proper window. I can only recommend you not to book this cruise line. Another passenger said he'd travelled on CMV's Vasco de Gama and it was even worse than the Magellan. Steer clear and choose another ship that knows how to provide passengers with a good holiday. Read Less

This was our first, but hopefully not our only, cruise so we have nothing to compare against. As first-timers I will say one thing firstly: the instructions given each day were a great help and all the things I worry about (not knowing where to go or what to do) turned out to be nothing to worry about at all. Your hands are well and truly held to ensure you know where you need to be and when. Embarkation was very quick (20 minutes from drop-off outside Newcastle Passenger Terminal to being in our cabin). The cabin was 4119 and was more than adequate for our needs. The ship has a slightly dated feel to it but is clean and bright. Large bars and public areas meant even at the busiest times it didn't feel cramped. We stuck to the Bistro (buffet) and the "Speciality Restaurants" as we're not formal-wear people. The food was flawlessly good. The "Speciality Restaurants" are really "pop-up restaurants" requiring reservations within part of the Bistro's area. The service and food there was absolutely wonderful. The arrival into ports was handled well and it was far easier to walk on/off than I'd expected. We had one anchor port on the itinerary (Lerwick) but they managed to dock in the end so can't speak to how good/bad the tender process is. The main issue was due to our fellow passengers (of a certain age and thus of a certain speed!) which did mean we took to walking out rather than wait for shuttle buses which would take forever to board or get off. We went on two excursions (Jewels of the North in Akureyi and Loch Ness in Invergordon) both of which were well-organised though suffered from similar "speed" issues as the getting on and off the ship did! We went to a few shows, activities and lectures. The shows were extremely well done and the show area is spacious with comfortable seating (lots of leg room which is very important to me!). The activities (quizzes, "gameshows") were amusing enough though we avoided the Knit and Natter due to concerns we might get too over-excited ;) (In all seriousness there was plenty to do for all personalities!). The lectures... weren't so good. One of the speaker's lectures were so full of errors I was able to spot them and I wasn't an expert on their subjects. The other had blurry photos and film which seemed pointless given the lack of quality. Service was great in parts (the restaurants), okay in others (we had a few mix-ups happen around our welcome package which were eventually sorted and refunds arranged without us asking so all was well) and bad, for the most part, in bars. Even if just 6 tables were in use out of the 40 or so available in a bar, you'd be lucky to get successfully served once every 60 minutes. Needless to say this meant we never woke up with a hangover! I'd hold special praise for our room steward and her colleagues on our deck. They were not just always polite when we passed them in the corridor but remembered us and engaged us in personal greetings. Our room was kept immaculately throughout our trip. Overall the positives far outweighed the negatives and we had a really enjoyable two weeks. We'll certainly be cruising again and CMV will at least get consideration when we come to planning our next trip. Read Less

This is our 5th cruise, the 3rd on the Magellan. We were sent tickets and purple luggage labels, booked for parking at Newcastle. Boarding turned out to be horrendous, something went seriously wrong which CMV blamed on the Port Authority. Eventually on board cabin 5193, right on the stern, deck 5, Baltic. All went well until 2-am, woke up by horrendous noise, props and bearings, followed by every imaginable noise a ship could make at one hour intervals. Phoned reception followed by visit to reception. Asked for change of cabin, refused at that time, was offered a temporary inside 4 berth cabin for the night, we refused that on the grounds we might have to stay there, so no sleep that night. Docking was even worse, continuous noise early morning docked at Dundee, we packed our bags. Visited reception for change of cabin, no can do until boarding has completed. Phoned local Dundee Taxi company for price back to Newcastle, they text me back £350. Waited and waited for info. Eventually told reception that unless we receive a like for like cabin before departure we will leave the ship and CMV can pay for taxi back to Newcastle. This seemed to do the trick and we were offered suitable like for like cabin on the same deck. Sorted and we thanked the staff involved. Day 2 was the start of our cruise, we can put all that happened behind us. New Cabin good, very clean, coffee and tea making facilities in all cabins which is a great bonus, lovely male Steward who was attentive throughout. As a rule we always try and give the Cabin Stewards a break, so making up room does not have to be every day, they are always there if you need them. Food as always very good, we never use the restaurants, that is our choice, we prefer to use the Bistro on deck 10, purely for choice and we can pick our time to eat. Always something there for everyone. Plenty to do and see on the ship on sail days or just relax and socialise. Noticed sick bags out at Dundee and at various other times although the sea was never rough, slight bobbing but gentle all the same. Unusual for us we decided to book shore excursions, we normally do our own thing, but as we had to book Russian excursions we thought what the hell. Actual excursions well organised and a good variety, (very good description of actual excursions so you know what you are letting yourself in for). Excursions are good value for money. All excursions start with a coach journey, this is where we noticed an abnormal amount of coughing. A lot of passengers were complaining of a sore throat. Further into the cruise the problem seemed to get worse, more people coughing, the general consensus was the air conditioning. Up to now we were not affected. We arrived at St Petersburg and disembarked for our excursion, half day at the Hermitage. This is a busy excursion and nonstop once you are in the venue. Two of our party went missing and were found outside, they did not seem well and said they needed air. Back on the ship by afternoon my Wife complained of a sore throat. As seasoned cruiser's we take every kind of medication just in case, so after taking this my Wife settled a bit and it was "carry on cruising". The second day in St Petersburg we were at the Yusipov palace and Waterways. This was a fabulous excursion for anyone going to St Petersburg. However it was marred by increased coughing, by the time we were back on ship it was noticeably worse among the passengers. Also we noticed passengers walking around with cannulas attached. My Wife's condition worsened throughout the day and evening, our own meds were not working. My Wife does suffer from COPD following Lung Cancer three years before. We always visit our G.P. before cruising for "Fit to travel purposes". By late evening things were that bad we had to visit the dreaded Medical Centre (no one wants to end up here). Upon initial assessment my Wife was immediately put on an I.V. Drip with Anti-Biotics (one hour) followed the next morning by another one hour I.V. drip with anti-biotics and face mask nebuliser. This was followed by two further treatments lasting one hour each. Various tests were carried out via a blood test. All tests proved negative. Diagnosis Pneumonia / Chest infection. Whilst these treatments were taking place a lot of other passengers were receiving the same treatment for the same problem, one elderly lady was very bad. This was a very busy Medical Centre. I have to say the care and treatment was first class. Eventually my Wife was discharged, however we were confined to Ship at Stockholm and no arranged Excursion at Alborg (we had a gentle walk here although limited). Elsewhere on the ship this was becoming an epidemic with coughing from every quarter so much so we spent a lot of time in our cabin to avoid the problem. The worse part was in the theatre where you could hardly hear the guest speaker for coughing all around. As far as I know and saw, one chap was airlifted off by Helicopter, he was being treated while my Wife had her last treatment, one person left at Stockholm for emergency operation. We heard of one being left at Russia and one at Alborg. Talking to a passenger (coughing became a talking point) a maintenance team turned up at her cabin to fix the bathroom door, (no problem known to her) however miraculously the door repair yielded a new shower head??? Make of that what you will. By the time we left Alborg my Wife was feeling better, albeit she still had a very sore throat which we treated with hot honey drinks. I have to ask the question. What was lurking aboard the Magellan? I have never known a problem like this on all our other cruises and it was quite worrying. Disembarkation, we were sent two light blue luggage labels the evening before. We came on with purple and guessed this was because of cabin change, light blue also denoted SAGA cruisers. Back to reception and after explanation we were given purple luggage labels (remember the car park), so on the day we disembarked with all the other purples, only to find we were an hour late and that service had ended. We were told we should have had lime green labels (yep I am still working on that one). However CMV were very good and we had a coach and escort back to the car park. Now I said earlier the "dreaded Medical Centre". The final bill for this was £4600.00. Now we have insurance but as with all insurances there ARE RESTRICTIONS AND RIDERS, one of our restrictions is COPD. As the diagnosis was Chest Infection Primary and COPD as secondary we are hoping the insurance passed the treatment as we were allowed to disembark. DO NOT CRUISE WITHOUT FULL INSURANCE. My Wife has visited our G.P. and further blood tests have been taken. She is still unwell and is being monitored. I would like to say that this was a good cruise, but the health issue has left us with no memorable thoughts. Of course the staff were brilliant as always, they all work very hard to please you. Will we cruise again? We have a cruise booked next year on the Marco Polo, but seriously after experiencing what we have just gone through........................... Read Less

This was our sixth cruise, one of the previous ships also belonged to CMV, the Astor. The Astor was a lovely ship with the right number of passengers. We soon realised that most passengers on the Magellan had chesty coughs and bad colds, so we were furious that, after getting through the winter with just one cold, we fell for the bugs on this ship. Before embarking at Tilbury each passenger had to complete a health questionnaire. I don’t think people were entirely honest. Even on the excursion buses we were surrounded by unhealthy people so felt really uncomfortable. Our cabin was well appointed but the biggest problem was the air conditioning. Either it was too noisy or, on four occasions we had the smell of diesel oil. Just awful !! The same smell was evident in the lift area on Pacific deck 7. Because the air con was a problem we had to keep it shut meaning a stuffy air cabin. The Raffles Bistro restaurant was the worst food experience of any ship we had been on. There were too many people trying to eat there at popular meal times. If you could get near the food you could not find anywhere to sit. We ate in the Waldorf restaurant and the food and service were excellent. Staff around the ship were friendly and efficient and even tried to assist us with ingress of diesel in to our cabin. We booked this cruise at least six months in advance and paid full price for it. I think we can safely say that many of the passengers would not have paid the same ! On formal nights, for instance, people would turn up in T shirt and jeans when most of us would be in DJ. To add to the bad experience we have found out since getting home that this cruise is being advertised at Buy One and Get One Free ! This was a twelve day cruise and five of them were at sea. Too much ! The Scenic Reykjavik excursion was rediculous. Who wants to see a housing estate and a church that was closed ? The entertainment was good and the lectures were from experienced professionals. Having highlighted the good and the bad parts of this cruise we would not travel on the Magellan again, and especially out of Tilbury which was a logistical nightmare. Read Less

Now this was an extremely memorable cruise for all the wrong reasons. I am in fact lucky to be alive I feel after spending three weeks on board over Christmas 2017 on a trip to Cape Verde and up through the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Madeira. These were all places I was keen to visit and me and my elderly mother of 88 flew to London from Australia to join this cruise. We are not cruise novices at all. In fact I have been on all the major cruise lines and before this I only had cause to whinge about the most mundane things. From the get go we were not impressed with the Magellan but I became increasingly alarmed as more and more people succumbed to an horrific form of pneumonia. Apparently there were dozens of people lying around on drips in the ship's hospital. Out of our table of 7 people, 4 became incredibly ill and I assume it was rampant through the air conditioning system which was turned too high. I just sadly waited my turn and then it hit me too, but fortunately after we'd seen Madeira so I only missed Porto. However I have never been sick on a cruise ship and now I associate the Magellan with death and destruction. I was so glad I had the foresight to bring some penicillin along just in case. I had no idea that ships could be riddled with lung infections. I always thought it was gastric infections. But I never heard of one person suffering from a gastric infection on this ship at least. I didn't go to the hospital but I instead became a prisoner in the cabin which was undoubtedly just as bad only cheaper! I couldn't sleep because if I laid on my side I could hear all the fluid whooshing around in my chest and I coughed and coughed all day and night. And along with the other awful ship noises (this ship is incredibly noisy and I kept thinking someone was knocking on my cabin door when there was in fact no one there) I heard lots of other people hacking away in their cabins too.. I am grateful that it was me who got the pneumonia and not my 88 year old mother as that would have been the end of her. However, she does have wonky legs and I would at a guess say that these old ships have not such good stability as it rocked and rolled a hell of a lot. Well the ship became so buffeted by the seas that my mother fell over in the cabin twice and hurt herself badly. I heard that people were continually falling down stairs etc and on the last day at sea someone was airlifted off after a fall. I totally blame the instability of the ship for that. The cruise itself, was a total nightmare. I hadn't done any sort of research prior because I had some sort of insane hope that cruise lines were all more or less the same. Well they are not. This bunch CMV buy up out dated cruise ships and then send them out to work for them. The cruise ship we were on was built in 1985 and used to belong to Celebrity. When they turfed it, this company took it over and now they run cruises all over the world in it. They had lousy entertainment. They had a couple of comedians, and their dance troop, while all excellent dancers, came from the Ukraine. (cheap labour). That was the sum total of the entertainment. They had dug up a guest lecturer on astronomy who was big on knowledge but not a good presenter. They showed one movie in the movie theatre on the second day and then not another one for a week, and from then on they seemed to make sure we were all on excursions when they showed the next movies. And you'd think that maybe there could be some solace by watching TV in our rooms. But they never got any reception and if they did, they had organised to have the most horrible channels as I guess they didn't pay for them in exchange for showing advertisements. One station was called 'men's movies' and showed all the 1950 cowboy style movies. They seemed to have two channels running 'The Chase' but mostly there was no signal. They had a station which seemed to show an awful lot of Babylon 5 which was a series from the early 1980s and then there was the channel that showed Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, Car rebuilds....obviously because it's free for them. There was no channel that showed movies that normal people want to see. Even a crime channel would have been better than those! And the food. Oh yes. It is almost impossible to find much to compliment there. Normal cruise ships always have a German, Austrian or Swiss Executive chef. Seems that they are the only ones who know how to run a kitchen. The staff on this nightmare ship were ALL Indians. The normal cut for Atlantic salmon is in a cutlet and with the grain. This looks good and keeps the flesh moist. That's even how they sell it in the fish shop. But this ship had invented a new cut. They cut the salmon like a slice of ham and across the grain so that they could no doubt get more from the entire fish. When I ordered it I could not believe my eyes and of course it was totally dry and inedible. On the first day I went to afternoon tea and I took what was supposed to be a 'roast beef' sandwich. I took one bite and nearly vomited. It seemed to be full of foamy stuff. I looked inside and I guess the best description of the mess was that it was cat's food in a frothy mix. Totally repulsive. And their cakes were just a classic. They seemed to think that all cakes are the same - ie with a thin sponge layer, topped with an inch of cream and then topped with another sponge layer and more cream. This was their recipe for Tiramisu, Black Forest Cake and dozens of other cakes. In fact they had a chocolate buffet one day which sounds good but was just like that. Every cake was decorated differently but they were all exactly the same inside. And on the first day I ordered Eggs Benedict and nearly fainted when I saw what came. It was horrible. Slices of white bread topped with hard poached eggs. Apparently most people returned them to the kitchen saying they were an abomination and that gave them a week to learn the real recipe as they served Eggs Benedict every Monday. So I knew it was safe to order Eggs Benedict the following Monday and I was right as they now were on a proper bun and lightly poached and with Béarnaise Sauce. As for the bread on the tables....all ships I've been on had seed buns of different styles and shapes in a basket at night. This ship had those white round rolls you buy in supermarkets. The staff for the most part were surly.. There were a few bright sparks amongst them but they were for the most part a sour and dour lot. In fact one morning in the breakfast restaurant I came in and plonked at the same table as my mother. A most officious woman ordered me to get up and join the table that was being filled by them at that moment. When I refused to move, she sternly told me to get up and go to where she was ordering me. They seem to be robotic with no common sense whatsoever. You might also meet some most unusual passengers on this cruise ship. You have been warned! The Magellan is now on its way to the Amazon and I don't have to use my crystal ball to know that the sick bay is already full of people with pneumonia as it would take a cleansing team from every hospital on earth to get the germs out of their air conditioning system. Cruise circumnavigated Iceland. Magellen is a partially refurbished Carnival ship. Passengers mainly elderly Brits and Scots. Artwork in corridors is excellent. Library consists of Carnival passengers' castoffs. Our cabin was small, barely enough room for queen-sized bed, but held contents of two suitcases and two garment bags. Land support and ship's crew had inadequate contact so were unaware of what the other was doing.. Documents emailed (not mailed) to us two weeks before departure. Land support can't help with departure details or with local transportation. Local buses free in Danish Tórshavn and in Iceland. No transportation offered to Hafnarfjordur, port for Reykjavik--a two-mile walk required. In Newcastle, we were advised to board a bus that merely circled the port. Next bus took us to local train station and abandoned us in Tynemouth--which we explored and liked.. Breakfast buffet never varied; features one kind of sausage--tasteless. Breads (grainless) and danish tasteless. Croissants an insult to the french. Indian breads were available at dinner but INdian members of crew conceded their failure. For breakfast, we joined the line in front of the omelette station. Sit down menu never varied but included overly sweet pancakes. Dinner varies with plenty of choice and good quality. Read Less

I chose this ship because she was sailing from Dundee (not on this websites list of ports) to Iceland,the Faroes ,Orkney and Shetland (again not on this website's radar). That in itself was a mistake because the cruise had started in Newcastle and we had a day sailing back there, plus a day berthed opposite a mountain of scrap iron before we got back to Dundee. The staff are attentive but there are only ten native English speakers in a crew of 558 .The majority are from the Ukraine and their personalities were forged under Communism. The ship is greedy. We paid over £4500 for the twelve days but (a) it was forbidden to take alcohol aboard and it cost £2.20 for a bottle of unknown Welsh water in our cabin. Drinks were very dear. The food was good but too artistically presented for our liking. Two or three squiggles of green and red jam round a hard boiled egg sized mound of whatever. The ship may have had a refit but the tenders hadn't. Noisy and smelly. One pair of lifts didn't work throughout the trip. A crew only safety drill was announced and passengers were told ,several times to ignore it. However during it I needed to get to our cabin for medication. All the bulkhead doors were closed. I had to go from deck 9 to 11 and up and down stairs to eventually find reception where I was told that drills like this went on in ships all over the world every day and that he,the receptionist was the only one on duty and could not leave his post. I told him that if I dib not get to my cabin he would have a real emergency . With ill grace he took us to it. Read Less

We booked this 6 months before departure so paid c. £3500 for 4 of us. Last minute passengers can pay much less (£500-600 each) and I imagine CMV struggle to break even. I had no problem with the price. Embarkation at Liverpool was extremely efficient. Greenock and Lerwick were dreary places so you will need to arrange excursions. I would do this in advance or you may have to use CMV tours at a price. These small places are not equipped to cater for independent tours especially if another cruise ship arrives at the same time. We enjoyed the Faroe Islands, Kirkwall and Tobermoray was pretty but simply a small harbour. The evening meals on the ship were very good - lots of choice for everyone. Breakfasts less acceptable and a bit of a scrum. There is an a la carte option at breakfast which is less choice but more peaceful. We usually had lunch at our port destination but there was a buffet on board, pizza and a burger bar. There are hundreds of staff on board from around the world and they were all exceptionally helpful and it seemed a happy ship on the face of it. They are obviously very reliant on tips so worth remembering that. The evening entertainment was enthusiastic and had its moments - some good and also excruciating. Didn't expect too much! It was mainly fun. Contrary to popular belief cruises are not really suitable for the very elderly/ infirm unless they remain on board all day! Even then disembarking is stressful as is the emergency drill (lifts out of action both times and many stairs to climb). Also bear in mind that the boats may drop anchor outside small ports and it is then necessary to reach shore on small tender boats - very difficult for the elderly. Finally do think about disembarkation and onward travel. The final port may be miles from the rail station (eg Newcastle) and taxis can be limited Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was departing from Dublin so no flying needed for us! We had 2 wheelchair users with myself and my husband. Embarkation We arrived in plenty of time. Only downside is the port has no parking at the berth they used for Magellan so my husband had to drop us off and drive up to Terminal 1 to park. Basic tent and fold-up chairs greeted us. It was bit tough getting the wheelchairs up the wooden ramps but I got there! Bags where whisked away very swiftly. Check-in was fast, we had all documentation ready, we had our photo taken and checked-in within ten minutes. Then the trouble started. We had to get the wheelchair users out of the wheelchairs (they can walk just very slowly) and walk them up the "ramp" onboard. This ramp consisted of extremely treacherous metal steps that were upright so you had to step over each one up to the top. Slow going and nerve-wrecking for an elderly person already a bit self-conscious of walking slowly! wheelchairs were ready after we scanned through. My husband had 1 wheelchair user up ahead of me and so got on first, rather than allowing them to wait for me and my charge. As a consequence they were shown to the room and we were stranded. I had to ask to be shown. Staff were unorganised and some rude, they just ignored you, or in my case, left the wheelchair behind a rail I couldn't get to and had to ask for it to be brought in to me. CABINS We had 2 interior cabins. One was an L configuration to allow the two folding wheelchairs in. Plenty of space, tv, storage and ensuite. Our cabin was double bed configuration and this does make the room appear smaller but still useful. Mirrors make the room lighter. Not enough power points. Cabin steward very attentive and on one occasion, came tot he rescue when one relative fell out of bed he rang us straight away and we got her up. All was ok. He asked how she was every time he saw her after that! ENTERTAINMENT Poor. There really was very little going on. A few singers, a band that played the same every night. Bingo and activities conducted by bored staff so really was a waste. Shows in main lounge was boring most nights, the comedian was good but short (no idea why people reported it was offensive!) trying to get a good seating area free from poles and suitable for wheelchairs was a nightmare. EXCURSIONS None were suitable for wheelchairs on this cruise due to that bloody ramp. The fright they got going up the ramp at the start put them off ever going back down it unless it was the last time! So we could only really go on 1 excursion, Hornfleur. Myself and my husband got the free shuttle up to the town center and saw the sights ourselves. Very nice shopping areas, architecture etc. We watched the rest of the excursion disembarkation from the deck as most where by tender. All I can say is that if I was anyway nervous or on a stick I would probably never sail again!! They manhandled poor old dears like luggage! Shocking. FOOD The restaurant was very good, made all the better for our table servers. The first night he hand cut the steak for our relative and then fed it to her like some Roman Villa scene. She laughed and it was just perfect hosting, knowing boundaries and politeness, not being pushy etc. Just super. We ate dinner here every night and were never disappointed. The buffet is just a bit too much like a canteen. All breakfasts and lunches similar, no atmosphere. SPA Prices similar to other cruiselines. Was disappointed not to have been shown to the relaxation area or thermal area after my treatments. The first treatment was a full body massage & facial. This was amazing. I cannot remember his name now but it was a deep but not sore massage, the way a massage should be. As a bodywork therapist myself, it surprises me how few therapists know not to dig deep for the sake of it but rather pay attention to the muscles and perform deep massage when the client is ready. This stops the treatment from turning into torture! The second treatment was a hot stone massage. I enjoyed this but not as much as the other package. Again I was given no tour, no access to the other areas of the spa and no add-ons recommended or specials. BARS We noticed the English pub had a bar menu on embarkation day but the next day the menu was gone. Maybe it only runs on certain routes? It looked a nice lunch menu of pies, stews, sandwiches etc. and would've been nice to try for a change. Drinks prices similar to at home, we had the drinks package and it was well worth the price. TIP: ask for Smirnoff instead of Vodka, for some reason my husband would get double measures instead of a single measure. Same happened to me when I asked for Bacardi. They do ask for cards for all in the group to make sure everyone is paying what they should. This was sometimes extremely rude when we got drinks but our relatives had tea or coffee. The supervisor made a big deal out of how they didn't have the package and needed the cards....she has arthritis and was struggling to get the card at time of ordering but cards where all on the table for anyone to check from then on. The sinatra lounge was always packed and had piano or jazz music in the evenings. The casino is tiny with about 20 machines, a blackjack table and roulette. Its on the main thoroughfare. Overall, I felt it was a glorified ferry. I had hoped it would feel like a small cruise ship but no, it felt like going on the sea ferry across to England just without my car! We definitely wouldn't do this cruiseline again. Read Less

ICELAND LAND OF ICE AND FIRE CRUISE JUNE 2017 Embarkation Our first time with Cruise and Maritime Voyages. There was a bus provided from Cork by JMG but we made our own way to Dublin Port. Having had experience of long chaotic embarkation procedures in the past we found this so simple. On board in 15 minutes . We were warmly greeted by staff and were escorted to our cabin and our bags arrived 5 minutes later. Everyone was given a time of embarkation which made it run much smoother. Our cabin 6129 - superior twin inner. Perfect location mid ship so equidistant to everywhere really. Great also for those who are not great rough sea travellers. We were next to the Fan room so expected the noise from that and had read people complaints in reviews in reference to this.. We heard a lot of people complain of this on this cruise but we did not notice it at all and I would be a very light sleeper. Our first time having an inside cabin without windows. Room very spacious. Most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Adequate wardrobe space. Ensure suitcases are not too high to enable them to fit under bed - adhere to measurements given in pre cruise documentation. Shower room very spacious and retracting line in shower should you wish to do some washing. Plenty of shower and shampoo available in dispensers but if you are fussy bring your own. We did and found the smell of the shower gel very sweet flowery scent which I personally didn't like. Hair dryer adequate as a travel hairdryer would be. Two different amp sockets on wall so use higher voltage one to get better power. Bring an adaptor with you as sockets are European- two prong. Cannot fault the ship it being an older ship. Every feature was better than expected - cleanliness, staff, spacious public rooms, lovely theatre, open decks, etc. Nothing was too much trouble for their very peasant and well-trained staff. A very affordable holiday. We will certainly .cruise with them again. DINING We had requested an early sitting . We were allocated to the Waldorf Restaurant at the sitting of 17.45 . Late sitting was at 20.15. The other restaurant Kensington had sittings at 18.15 and 20.30 We liked the early sitting especially on days at sea. On our days ashore if late back we preferred to head to Raffles Bistro on our return. People at the late sitting didn't appear to leave the restaurants until after 10.30 which I would consider late. Food at Waldorf was lovely and staff so friendly. Raffles Bistro - typical buffet style perhaps not as good a selection as on bigger ships but very tasty and have to say we ate too much. We also chose Raffles for breakfast and enjoyed the delicious omelettes at the Egg station. The Bistro always packed for lunch especially on days at sea but you would always get a seat. Good selection of teas and coffee at the drink station . If you wanted a hot chocolate you had to pay for it. Drinks packages were available at £17 a day. Not great drinkers and not sure how we would be with some rough seas possible we didn't bother with this and bought a drink whenever we felt like one. Overall drinks very reasonable . Oh we did try a cocktail package - 10 cocktails for £29.99 which was fine. Bars were spacious with different entertainment at each venue. ENTERTAINMENT Singer in Taverners Pub was not the best but we made the most of it. Loved the classical music in Hampton Bar by two very talented musicians and a lovely venue. Pianist in Sinatra's lounge also very good. Evening shows - two shows 1930 and 2100. some of the shows unremarkable though enthusiastic singer, dancers and comedians. Some shows better than others. From Russia with Love particularly stands out - excellent. Morgan Lee Jones comedian. Enjoyed the formal nights. Mixed attire. Men in suits or tuxedos. Women in evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant day dresses. Whatever you are comfortable with. Enjoyed talks and lecture held during the day. Some excellent speakers - Cliff Jones in particular was amazing and the auditorium packed for all of his lectures. Also John Riley lectures on photography very good. Photographers following you everywhere especially if on tours. some people were very rude to them - they are only doing their job and were lovely young people. no harm browsing through the photos. We actually bought a few and they looked after us well having not bought a photo package. PORTS OF CALL Just a note that on other cruises that we were on the ship provided maps of the city or port that was being visited but not on the Magellan on this cruise. We had printed maps out before we left home and researched each port as we had not booked excursions except for one. Hint: Take down number of the ships emergency contact number on the daily programme and take it with you just in case you run into difficulty or run late. LIVERPOOL. Berthed at Liverpool Cruise Terminal a short walk to the city. Taxi rank adjacent to the exit of the cruise terminal. Tourist office located at the Albert Dock Visitor Information Centre. We firstly walked into the city and headed for the Cavern on Mathew Street - synonymous with the Beatles. Victoria Square nearby and Eleanor Rigby statue. Hop on hop off bus stop just outside terminal. We availed of this later on in the day ( £8 each. )Took about an hour to complete the full tour without getting off. We actually ended up going back to the ship for something to eat and a rest and headed back out again. We had a fantastic guide Chris . Recommend it. At the stop for the Metropolitean Cathedral which is an interesting building our guide recommended visiting the Philharmonic Dining Rooms - a listed building - one of the most ornate buildings in Liverpool - with exquisite interior - lovely for a glass of wine , a local ale or something to eat. And of course there is shopping for anyone interested! Got a wonderful send off from Liverpool with singing from the Mersey Choir and Beatles Puppets. DAY AT SEA A little rough as one can expect in the North Sea - it didn't bother us but some people were affected. Must recommend the Physiotherapist /Massage therapy in the Spa Centre. Rado gave us an excellent talk and a lot of people attended for a free consultation. Prices very reasonable and packages available. LERWICK SHETLANDS Tendered - so keep this in mind if reduced mobility and want to go ashore. Must say that the ship staff were fantastic assisting anyone who needed help. Tours were offered by the ship. We had arranged our own tour at this port. www.shetlandminibustours.co.uk . Shetland Minibus Tours is run by Grant Redfern, an experienced and independent Shetland tour guide who was born and grew up on the Shetland Islands. Offering minibus (8 seats) tours the length and breadth of the Islands. There were 6 on our tour. We had the tour booked for 9.00 as the ship was in very early. But the first tender for independent travellers was supposed to be at 9.15. We approached Staff at reception desk the night before and they kindly sorted us out. South mainland tour - EXCELLENT TOUR - we were able to travel to places that the bigger buses were unable to get to and were able to leave an attraction whenever we wanted to at our own pace. Weather wet and foggy but Grant our guide would go to where the weather was brighter. We visited Scalloway Castle, Croft house Museum, St Ninians Isle, Carols Shetland Ponies, Jarlshof, and Sumburgh Head - the highlight being the puffins visible at close proximity. Got to spend a little time in the town and worth a stroll around. Great selection of pubs , restaurants and shops. Don't forget to buy some Puffin Pooh or some lovely puffin toys available among other souvenirs at the tourist office near the pier. The locals love to stop and have a chat . If you decide not to do a tour there is a nice walk to the Knab along the shore line. KOLLAFJORDUR FAROE ISLANDS Magnificent scenery cruising into Kollafjordur. Not much to see or do around Kollafjordur itself unless you like to hike a little . Again we did not book a tour here. We had checked with the cruise company if there would be a bus provided to Torshavn and they replied that possibly so but that they could not confirm it until we were onboard the ship. Shuttle buses supplied but limited in number ( 3 ) so obvious queues . we waited 20 - 25 minutes and the journey to Torshavn which is lovely in itself took about 20 minutes- very much shortened by travelling through the long tunnel . Torshavn a delightful cosy little town - Bus stopped near the Fortress and Lighthouse and a short walk to the centre and to the old parliament - Tignanes area - Lovely little churches worth visiting and cemetery worth a visit and narrow streets to wander around. It was a Sunday so unfortunately for many people the shops were closed. There was a lovely little supermarket where one could get a nice cup of coffee or tea and cakes and staff very friendly. The young people working there were interested in where we came from and showed us the Faroese notes and we were able to get some as a souvenir. Lovely little cafe Paname Cafe was opened. There was just one little gift shop opened on the day. Tourist information centre in centre of town with toilet facilities. There is a local bus service - red town buses free to travel on which travels around the immediate town area if you wanted to see around the area without having to walk its an option. Amazing scenery cruising out of the fjord SEYDISFJORDUR ICELAND Yet another beautiful journey through the fjord - numerous waterfalls streaming down the volcanic cliffs visible on all sides. A tiny little village easy to walk around - short distance from where we were berthed. First stop a walk to the beautiful waterfall that we could see on arrival. Ground was wet and slippery in parts . Further along the road a walk to Tvisongur Sound Sculpture located on the mountain side. Tvisongur is a site-specific sound sculpture by German artist Lukas Kühne and is located on a mountainside above the town of Seydisfjordur. Again good walking shoes recommended.. About a 20 minute walk along a path across from the fish factory just outside of the village.. The work is built of concrete and consists of five interconnected domes of different sizes. The heights of the domes are between 2 and 4 meters and they cover an area of about 30 square meters. Each dome has its own resonance that corresponds to a tone in the Icelandic musical tradition of five-tone harmony, and works as a natural amplifier to that tone. Nice views from here also. The picturesque Bláa Kirkjan ( Blue Church) is one of the historic timber buildings in town. There are several other walks - a walk to Fjardarsel Hydro Plant about a half hours walk from the town. Take a short walk along by the river bank which is lovely. Purchased my stamps for postcards here in the supermarket as post office closed by the time I got to it. Also bank link at supermarket to get some Krona. Credit cards acceptable everywhere but its handy to have a few krona for public toilets - generally charge 200 - 300 Krona for toilet facilities. Shops opened selling souvenirs and Kaffi Lara - El Grillo Bar nice for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and a snack or a local beer. One of our favourite ports of call. AKUREYRI Yet another magnificent fjord journey to here. A 5 to 10 minute walk to centre. We recommend travelling on the free of charge local city buses. Route 5 and 6 the most interesting and gives you a feel for the town. Lots of museums to visit. Lots of souvenir shops for you to browse in. Botanical gardens small but interesting and also visit to the churches. Nice little cafes. Home to the northernmost golf course in the world for those interested. ISAFJORDUR ICELAND Tendered here. Collect your tender tickets at the Taverners Pub when you are ready to go and they announce the boat departures - then head to the gangway. Called into the tourist information near the pier and they were very helpful and got a map with self guided walks. About a 5 minute walk to the town centre. A very small town . We liked it here - liked the remoteness . Small botanical Garden here also..We walked out of town climbing up on the avalanche blocking barrier walls great views over the town and fjord. Two churches to visit a tiny catholic church and the other Ísafjarðarkirkja a modernist church's altarpiece that has over 100 doves, each one made by a local during a group art-making project. Lovely little bakeries on the street Gamia Bakard and also Bakarinn bakery cafe. There is bar also if you fancied a drink. Visited the supermarket here and got a few items to bring home - actually a nice souvenir is some hand ground sea salt from the area presented beautifully and some delicious Icelandic sweets especially the liquorice ones coated in coconut and chocolate - went down a real treat with workmates and not that expensive compared to other items. REYKJAVIK Overnight here. Tourist visitor centre at pier - maps of city available. Good selection of souvenirs available and post box , last opportunity to send postcards. Phone internet and toilet facilities here. We weren't sure until week before that we were able to go on cruise so had not tours booked and by the time we got to book many were gone. Had thought about the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon combined tour but that was booked out - we did manage to book the Golden Circle tour for the second day - our last day. So our first day we had a late start. It is tiring after all the ports of call. We got the hop on hop off bus from the pier. €35 can use it for 2 days. We gave ours away to tow people that we met on the ship. Takes one hour to do full circle. We got off at Hallgirmskirkja Church. €8 to go in the elevator to top of tower and we thought worth it for the views. timing is everything we had visited the church first but it was then closed for an hour or two as there was a concert. Downhill to centre of town there is a nice cafe - Kaffitar on Bankastraeti which offers coffee refills among other drinks and nice sandwiches and cakes. For those interested there is I know !! a Christmas Shop on Laugavegur street the main shopping street - some beautiful ornaments - again a nice souvenir. Some more expensive than others. In the evening we actually walked into Reykjavik from Skarfabakki cruise quay were we were berthed - a 4.3 mile walk ( 50 minutes with stops along the way. ) along the shoreline path passing through Laugarnes - a quarter that contains a historic site probably where the first settlement was situated. Continue along until you come to Harpa the concert hall - worth a look inside. The local buses no 16 runs to the cruise terminal op to 19.99hrs and the no16 runs some of the way with a short walk - the bus driver would tell you where to get off. I think it worked out about € 3 to 4 for the bus one way. Bus station quite central Last day we took The golden Circle tour with the ship. An early start meeting point outside the visitor centre. Comfortable buses. Excellent tour guide. busy schedule - over 8 hour day. A little walking involved. The main stops - Hervagerdi ( where earthquake hit ) Geyser, Thingvellir and Gulfoss and Perlan on return.. Lunch included at Hotel Geyser which was lovely and catered for those of us that had dietary issues of didn't eat fish!! Amazing scenery - again weather not the best and cold. But that is what you can expect when you travel here so be prepared. A long day. I can see why those who had combined tour with Blue Lagoon were shattered as they had another 2 - 3 hours. Recommend splitting and doing on different days. Speaking with other passengers who had booked tours at each port of call especially the local area tours - they were disappointed and regretted not going independently. We were glad that we had booked the tour on the last day as it was followed by two days at sea so we could recover. Weather a little better on return journey so able to get out on deck - people availing of the pool area. Watch out for wonderful wildlife, birds and whales. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed this cruise, for us it was the destination and we had no great expectations of the ship itself but it surprised us on all aspects. This cruise is available again next year we understand and we would do it all over again. Read Less

We embarked at Tilbury & I have got to say that the embarkation was not too bad & the cases arrived in a timely manner. We ate our Dinner in the Waldorf Restaurant which I could not fault the service was food & no complaints about the food. Our Cabin which which was described as an Inside superior was roomy but the noise from the engine was too much in our view. The noise kicked in when it was docking which was quite early on a number of occasions & there is no way you could sleep. The entertainment of an evening was slightly dated except the last show which was good. The ports of call were good except that it was called a Christmas Market Tour but there was NO Christmas Market in Amsterdam at all. A little moan, you were kicked out of your Cabin at 7.30am but we did not Dock until after 8am & were not allowed off the ship until about 9am. Which left a number of ladies trying to find a Toilet that was free (and not blocked) between those times. Overall not a bad cruise, the people you meet always make up for the bad bits!!! Read Less

To be honest the ship and cruise in general was up to expectation but we were far from satisfied with the cabin (inside, deck seven number 7146) allocated to us. From the second night out we were subjected to heavy noise from above which made it almost impossible to sleep, it sounded as though heavily loaded wheel barrows were being moved back and forth across the cabin roof. After putting up with it for two nights the matter was raised with the reception staff but were advised that there was no alternative accommodation available so nothing could be done. In the meantime we discovered from other adjacent cabins that we were directly below the galley and the noise was due to late night and early morning work in the bakery, Later in the week a cabin did somehow become free for us to use so normal sleep was again possible but by this time we were more than a little dissatisfied with the treatment received. Correspondence with CMV achieved nothing apart from being told that such noise was an understood risk of cruising a fact that as a cruiser of many years experience with various lines I was not impressed with. To conclude I can only emphasise the need to check carefully where your cabin is situated and most definitely avoid number 7146 on the Magellan and probably others near it. Read Less

We chose the cruise because of having travelled before with Cruise and Maritime on the Astoria which we enjoyed. Also the itinerary appealed to us. We opted for an inside cabin and was on deck 7. The cabin was spacious but it did have bunk beds so if there were four people in the cabin, it would have been cramped. Other comments have said the cabins were noisy on this ship but we did not have a problem and found the beds comfortable. Our cabin was kept clean and we never had to ask for anything. Entertainment on this cruise was below our expectations mainly because we had to go to the show before dinner as we were on the 2nd sitting (8.15pm). On previous cruises, we have always had the show after dinner. We found ourselves at a loose end with nothing much to do. The entertainment is definitely geared for the First sitting passengers who had more choice. The food was fine with a good choice. However, we found it annoying when the waiters whisked plates away before everyone had finished their food. Also we always had to ask for extra coffee. We were disappointed with some areas of the ship that were 'cold' and 'uninviting'. We found some comfy chairs on one of the decks but it was a shame the fountain and pool had no water in it. The main pool also was not very inviting. We had some lovely trips and although the organised trips were expensive, we enjoyed the beautiful countryside. Read Less

The Magellan is an older ship that was purchased by CMV just a year or so ago. No glitz, no atrium, few balconies but comfortable and in reasonable condition. About 1200 passengers, just about all British who enjoy that they can drive to the port - no flight needed. No children! The itinerary was super, a 12 night round trip from Tilbury not far from London. We took the train from Fenchurch Street station in the City of London to Tilbury Town and the ferry shuttle to the cruise terminal (you must show your train ticket to ride for free). The itinerary was: Invergordon (for Inverness), Kirkwall (Orkneys), Stornoway (Lewis, Outer Hebrides), Tobermory, Belfast (Northern Ireland), Dublin and Cobh (Ireland), the Isles of Scilly (Cornwall, U.K. ), and two French ports - St. Malo (near Mont St Michel) and Honfleur. The cruise line uses the older style of set dining times in its two formal dining rooms. There are different start times for each - in the Waldorf, the early sitting was at 5:45pm and in the Kensington, at 6:15pm. The late sittings were rather too late for us - after 8, I think. We had charming table mates, two older British couples who were travelling together. Breakfasts were served buffet style in the two dining rooms and in the self-service restaurant. However they serve you coffee and juice in the dining rooms, but not in the more casual restaurant. There were egg cooking stations. Boring sugary cereals suitable for non-existent kids (no children allowed) as well as porridge and weetabix. You could cobble together the "full English" but it wasn't appealing. "Breakfast in bed" is the only free room service - continental. I was prepared for average food. The service was excellent but the food did not match. It is Continental cuisine but their best dishes were curries. Their attempt at creme brûlée was terrible - curdled and not creamy. Gordon Ramsay would not allowed it to leave the galley! They made no attempt to cook seasonally nor to reflect the areas we were visiting. Few vegetables. The cheeses were labelled as assorted cheese. (Just finished a Marks & Spencer's sandwich proudly labelled with the name of the cheese - Wensleydale.) It seems a lack of care. Buy or make a few labels and put them on the cheese plate. Jamie Oliver and gastropubs haven't happened yet! Bacon at breakfast was undercooked in the Waldorf. The sausages were the sort with too much filler in them. The comedian joked about the single brown stripe on them! The food service officer was helpful and he ordered a special curry for us for the following evening. The soups were pretty good but the food felt institutional. They went amiss the most when they tried dishes like a bland creole starter. And their Waldorf salad was like baby food! They only served vanilla and strawberry ice cream - a bit melted, but they were the most reliable desserts. Once my travel companion scored banana and once chocolate ice cream. They do need a new chef for sweets. The cakes, tarts and squares were boring and not worth the calories - some teatime treats were labelled as "dry cake". The teatime scones were quite good. However most passengers (almost all were older Brits) seemed happy enough with the food. And we were happy to have wonderful lunches off the ship, including fabulous fish and chips and chowders. Alcohol prices were reasonable but only tea, coffee and "tap" water are available for free. My tea drinking sisters were surprised they didn't have teapots. (They do have them for room service.) There was a special get-together for American passengers and we Canadians got a last minute invitation from the "future cruise' staffer. (I had been whining a bit to him.) Free champagne! And a free group photo. Our TA used the Miami-based CMV office for our booking. There was more food available in bars from 10-10:30 every night and two gala spreads during the cruise - one featured chocolate fantasies and one had a whimsical theme - a roast chicken band plus a whole roast pig. However service didn't start until after 10:30pm. When the hotel director at the American event asked a few of us about the events, someone said it was too late and too much food right after their second sitting dinner. I suggested a gala brunch instead - we were only getting in quite late one day so that would have fit the schedule. I was told that it was impossible! I think they should focus on the core meals and get them right. They have pools, a gym and a spa as well as a library and a dedicated card room, plus lots of under-utilized outside space. Be prepared to visit further afield on this itinerary. We had a great archaeology tour in Kirkwall with WildAboutOrkney (Clive). We had pre-booked a taxi for a few hours in Stornoway with STS (Valerie) to see archaeology and black houses. Be sure to have the amazing fish and chips at Cameron's. We took the Stagecoach bus into Inverness to see Culloden. We had a super day trip to the Giant's Causeway, a rope bridge (Carrick-a-Rede), a whiskey distillery, a photo stop at Dunluce castle used in Game of Thrones and scenic drive along the Causeway Coastal road with Belfast City Sightseeing. Before returning us to the ship, our driver, Gary gave us an informative but unsettling tour of Belfast, its sectarian areas and graffiti and murals. Glad we did it though. Btw, we shared this excursion with cruisers from Oceania Nautica that had docked closer to the city. In Dublin, we had pre-booked a hop on, hop off bus (yellow) and pre-booked Kilmainham Gaol. Worthwhile. We rented a car from Sixt in St Malo for a visit to Mont St Michel then walked the walls in St Malo. We visited the market in Honfleur and had lunch with the rest of the tourists on Vieux Bassin. Two places we just explored locally - Cobh (the heritage centre) and Tobermory (a walk along the path in Aros Park). And in the Scilly Isles, we took the ship's morning tour to Tresco Abbey Gardens. We were tendered directly to this private island and afterwards, tendered to St Mary's via the ship - just stayed on the tender. Depending on the tides, there can be a long walk (40 minutes) to the garden but there were complimentary shuttles for those less able. Wonderful garden with a garden tour guide. I guess what got to me most about the Magellan was the lack of flexibility. Breakfast ended fairly early, even when the ship was not getting into port until noon. Most staff didn't seem to know what was happening, and didn't seem to be willing to give a best guess. But they were friendly! My sisters wanted to use one of the whirlpools but either they weren't on (and no one knew the hours for them) or they were cold. Just too much hassle. We had a higher than usual percentage of tenders because of our itinerary and an added one in Kirkwall because there were two warships there for a military anniversary. We were issued tender tickets (queuing in a lounge) but the people going on excursions didn't fill each tender, departing with quite a few empty seats. We thought they should let independents go ashore then since there was space. We did suggest this and thankfully the excursion person did start allocating extra tender tickets to independent guests. There was entertainment every night including a few production shows. We went to three very good comic shows during our busy trip. Quite a few venues for music and drinking. There was a lecturer (we went to one lecture on Oscar Wilde). They do have the dreaded photographers on board but I don't know how much they sold. Quite intrusive though. Wifi worked okay but not in our room. There was a repeater in the main hallway so we lurked there sometimes. Cheaper wifi service than on other ships I have sailed on. At the end of the cruise, we had to be out of our stateroom by 6:30am and we were told express disembarkation would not start until 8am (actually it started about a half hour earlier than that). Surprise, surprise, many people wanted to do express so they could just drive home! They didn't want to wait around in a lounge for their time slot. I do want to say that the crew was wonderful, friendly and helpful. Other passengers were welcoming and friendly. And the cost for our quad cabin was surprisingly affordable. But I felt stressed - too much rushing to get to dinner or breakfast on time. If you spoke up, you got more services, but I don't want to have to ask for favours. I would assume that since they do this itinerary regularly, they would know what is "usual", but they didn't seem to. If you do decide to cruise with them, don't expect to hear about the ship's excursions until about a month before you go. I suggest you do your own thing. The ship was very good about supplying tourist brochures the evening before and arranging for local tourism officials to come on board in the morning. They did supply free shuttles in a few ports. An oddity - the daily program did not give weather forecasts and for the first half of the cruise, the cruise director didn't provide this either. It didn't appear on the ship's webcam page on the tv either. It was hard for us to prep for a full day away from the ship, so we just prepared for the worst! We wouldn't select CMV again, especially if you couldn't have a meal a day off the ship! However the price was excellent for our quad room and I believe that the extra cost for solo travellers is much lower than average. Read Less

My husband & I have taken around a dozen cruises with various lines inc. P&O Royal Carribean, CUnard, Celebrity, MSC & Fred. We took this short cruise to determine how we felt about the ship and cruise line before thinking of any longer duration. We fortunately caught the cruise coach from London Victoria to Tilbury - we had no delays and went straight to check-in on arrival at the port, unlike many other passengers, many of whom waited over an hour & a half simply to get into the car park, after having done battle with the M25 traffic. So far, so good. We arrived at our cabin, deck 6, at the rear of the ship - quite large in size - slightly surprised with the twin bed formation - but we got used to it - apparently we were told there are only 10 'Queen' beds on board. However, the beds were comfortable and the pillows, small but reasonable too. However there were no tea-making facilities in cabin which is surprising for a cruise line that prides itself on a traditional British cruise - we need our tea!! Also you need adaptions to use the plugs, again unexpected. The shower curtain however was a real pain! It's about 2 inches too short to reach the floor, so the bathroom floor gets wet and the curtains will insist on sticking to you when trying to shower. Don't get me started on the noise!! I've never heard such a din - not just the usual drone but banging, clanking and high whining vibration especially when starting the approach to a port - so 5am wake-up call was to be expected. Food was good, tasty although portions were not large, but with a potential 5-course menu - it wasn't necessary to go hungry and if you fancied trying an extra of anything our waiter was very happy to oblige. Our Wine steward was also very helpful and pleasant and it was a very nice touch that a complimentary drink was offered on the last night on the Company" -cheers!! There was one formal night, and most dressed appropriately however there were an odd few who only managed to sport a tea-shirt and jeans. One big complaint - I only drink Soya milk, which was available on the Buffet at breakfast but unavailable anywhere else on the ship for a coffee - it was quite a task to actually take a cup of milk from breakfast and ask one of the Baristas to make me a Latte using it. Afternoon tea was fairly standard - buffet style but one day had lovely raisin scones with jam and cream - this was followed the next day by Cheese scones still offered with jam and cream - different.!! Late night snacks were brought round the lounges on the 1st & 3rd night, unfortunately there were not enough to go round on the first evening - or some folks got more than their fair share! Middle night of cruise saw a "Magnifique Buffet" with ice sculptures and carved fruit/vegs - lots of sea-food available, much to my husbands delight. The entertainment team were good, shows were of reasonable standard, especially the ABBA inspired show. But the best was the Cabaret provided each night by members of the Entertainment team. We enjoy dancing - this was not as good on the ship as others we have experienced. The dance floor was on the small side but the main problem was the musical duo couldn't seem to maintain any sort of tempo throughout a song, so what initally appeared to be a rumba or cha-cha would slow down or speed up and then the inevitable key-change so just went on, & on ..... We both experienced some treatments in the Spa and really impressed by both our therapists - very good treatments, really relaxing and reasonably priced. What a shame that the tannoys are not turned off (or at least down) to prevent the sudden announcements fro breaking into the relaxation time. However one of the biggest gripes of the whole expereince was the first Port - Ghent - 8 shuttle buses for everyone who wanted to take themselves independently into Ghent - a 26 min drive away (hour- round-trip). We had been waiting for a shuttle for around 40 minutes when the crowd were told there was an hour delay - so taking the hour round trip into account, we (together with a considerable number of others) gave up and spent the rest of the day on-board. Many people were very unhappy with this situation and the cruise director got quite a bit of stick for this. Next stop at Amsterdam was better - just a 10 minute walk into the centre. We never saw, or even heard the Captain, or indeed any of the Senior Staff, which was unusual. All announcements were made by a the Passenger Director (or something).A large number of the crew were from Ukraine, according to the information in the ships bulletin, who tended to be rather off-hand, with smaller numbers of Indonesian and Filipino waiters who were as attentive as ever. We docked 2 hours late on our return to Tilbury as a result of the adverse weather conditions experienced overnight. We were in quite a storm. However, after nearly a dozen cruises, including across the North Sea, the Baltic, Fjords, Bay of Biscay and a Transaltantic - this was the worst experience I have had, pitching and rolling and in fact, the first time, ever - I succumbed to the sick-bag (sorry) . We were amused to watch the usual window washing whilst in port - this consisted of a hose-pipe fitted with some shower-like attachments being dangled over the side and swung from side to side - ingenious! We met some very nice people and have answered our question - would we go with them again - Sorry - not for us. We like smaller ships but this was not really up to speed in our opinion. Fred do small much better, as do some of the other smaller ships available with other lines. Read Less

We chose this short cruise to Amsterdam and Ghent to give us insight to what cruising is all about. The embarkation and disembarkation were a joke - on arrival we were a little early and after being sent to the wrong booking area we were directed to a pub to chill out. On return there was a huge queue and we had to wait for sometime before finally giving our luggage in and getting on board. Disembarkation- We were late in port due to the weather - we were should of alighted at 9.45 but it was around 11 or 12 when we were called. We got to the queue when an announcement was made to go to the aft as someone had fallen. We all duly went aft only to find we had to queue again and then the doors were closed. (more passengers were being called to disembark when we were still stuck there) The crew were becoming frustrated as much as us. Finally a crew member came into view and we asked why were we waiting, he disappeared through the doors and a little while later the doors opened, we gave out a cheer. When stepping onto the gangplank a crew member was calling a port person a 'stupid idiot' as he had not connected the gangplank securely to the ship so it was moving in and away from the side - someone could have had a serious injury. During the both occasions there was a lack of information to why we were held up. The cruise itself - cabin/bathroom was a good size, the food was very good but the waiter could have been a little more attentive as he got some orders wrong/mixed up. There was plenty of choice and different ways to have your meals (buffet style or in restaurants) The entertainment was good and the troupe worked very hard. We enjoyed the stop offs in Ghent and Amsterdam but time was very limited. Pick up and drop off worked OK for us but some people were waiting sometime to get a coach back to ship. For our first time it has put us off as we seemed to queue for everything and if we did decide to cruise again we would definitely not use the port of Tilbury. Read Less

Anyway Harmony we were glad to get off.(see review). Magellan we wanted to stay on !! A lot older, a lot smaller, a lot less brash and flash; but a lot more like a ship and a far better atmosphere on board. The shows were good, a lovely Captains Club lounge where we danced 2 nights running. No nice dance lounge like that on Harmony. Also the drinks prices were very good, and no added 18% on top! The food wasn't brilliant but reasonable. Dinner was good. A lot easier to get a table for breakfast in the buffet. We had an outside view cabin which was as roomy as Harmony, the shower room a bit bigger. The décor on the ship was very smart, all clean and tidy. All in all having read a few bad reviews about this ship we were pleasantly surprised ! Read Less

Having always believed that cruise food is pretty good, we were sadly disappointed. They must have shares in a salt company as everything was ruined by over-salting (apart from the porridge). The soup was always cold and tasteless, whatever flavour it was meant to be. The main meals were generally awful. They were nothing like their description - meat was tough, the pasta was horrible, and the desserts were a total disappointment. The cabin was OK and the steward was very good. If you did not want waiter service at your table you could have gone to Raffles bistro and helped yourself from a buffet. This was very popular and consequently there were not enough seats, so we had to hang around and wait for a table. The entertainment is good and varied but it impinges on the library so if you want a quiet read - tough. Overall we enjoyed the cruise, but were disappointed to find on reaching home that money had been stolen from our cabin. We had come back from lunch to find the door open, so someone must have used a pass-key. One day previously an 'electrician' came round when he probably thought we were out (during meal time, but I was sea-sick and in my bed) He said he was there to fix a reported fault with the sockets-but there was no fault and we didn't report such) There was an outbreak of a chest infection throughout the ship, consequently we will not choose CMV in future. We only booked this cruise because we both wanted to see Jersey and Guernsey, unfortunately that didn't happen. We choice to park at tilbury and this was a brilliant service the staff at the car park were very helpful and gave clear instructions. We noticed there that the other passengers seemed older than us. (We've just turned 60) most people were well over 70+ Embarkation was fast and on the ship we were met by staff and a very nice lady showed us to our cabin. The food was not of the best quality but there was plenty of it. The soups and the bread were very nice. Afternoon tea was very strange Apple crumble and custard and small hard scones with artificial cream and dry cake. We bought the drinks package even though we are not big drinkers, but it was well worth it as the cocktails were very nice and included brand name soft drinks as well. We both enjoyed Amsterdam and Zeebrugge and looked forward to the Channel Islands, but unfortunately the Captain announced that because of the high swell we wouldn't be going and instead were going to Cherbourg and Rouen instead. We and lots of other passengers thought this strange and more likely to do with the age and disabilities of the other passengers.( the weather so calm and sunny) as they would have to use tenders in these ports. We felt let down as we wouldn't have booked a cruise around France, so will never use this company again Read Less

This is a lovely Little boat. At 46,000 tons it is towards the top of the Small category. For a vessel of this size the cabin quality is good (4/5), but it is a little crowded. This was now our 12th cruise and certain factors disappointed. We prefer ‘Freestyle Dining’ and dislike being stuck on the same table with the same handful of guests every night. We are happy to share a table if necessary, but not for 6 nights in sequence. In consequence we switched our system to tracking down a good lunch meal ashore and skipping the evening dinner. The on-board alternative, the ‘Bistro’ was convenient, but the standard of food offered there was poor. (1/5). The standard of food in the main dining was well below expectation (2/5) and is our one major criticism. Had we tried this more often we might have met a better meal, but were unwilling to take the risk. The vessel has an Engine problem. It behaves like an old car. Very under-powered when ‘push’ is needed. It was extremely noisy when pulling away from the dockside or travelling in a river, probably against the water flow. We complained and the problem did disappear, but at the cost of very low speed running. To take 4 hours from Amsterdam to the river estuary indicated that the engine(s) were running at low power. Any faster and the vibrations would make the cabin furniture rattle. Coastal running over short distances worked well, but it might prove to be too noisy on a long, (Transatlantic ?) run. I await further comments. (If it was a horse I would shoot it.) The passenger mix favours the elderly, supported by the relatively low cost per person. We found the number of ‘wheelies’, Zimmer frames and wheeled walkers, motorised chairs, crutches and walking sticks surprising and soon realised that the Captain would not be able to offer the ‘Ship to Shore’ transfers using the lifeboats as tenders. It would have been extremely dangerous to even try. This was probably why the visits to Jersey and Guernsey were cancelled and replaced by Cherbourg and Rouen. I would congratulate him on this choice. We also wanted to go to the Channel Islands, but realised that it could not be done safely. CMV will have to rethink some of its itineraries or this will often arise Read Less

Great staff, from across the world. Must particularly praise our Ukranian waitress and her number two on table 153 in Waldorf Restaurant, Krystina and Ruslan. Also our super cabin boy Suwirka, who never stopped smiling. Somehow, in spite of our efforts, our cabin was miraculously tidy! Plenty of hot water, and lovely towels. And a great shower. Food generally good, but good quality bacon ruined - I suspect it was cooked over night and then warmed up, as it was rock hard. And this ship caters mainly for "older" British people, but serves tea bags floating in warm water - unbelievable, but no teapots. Entertainment good to excellent, especially the "human dynamo", Abbie, and the resident band led by Richard. Abbie's 30 minute session in Captains Club at 10:30 one evening spoilt by six inconsiderate and noisy guests at bar - encouraged by one of the bartenders. She has a great voice, but our fellow guests and one bartender acted like louts and spoilt it. The musicals were all exceptionally good - again led by Abbie, and (I forget his name) Joseph and the Technicolour Dream-coat. Public toilets continually being cleaned, but not enough of them, and a tendency to be out of order too often. Bar waiters excellent, but sometimes too many in one place, not enough in others - more poor management. Inadequate seating when everyone is on board - and the armchairs near the window in Captains Club are very significantly past their "sell by" date. The captain may be a good seaman (but that's in question given that he allowed us to be hit by a force nine out of the Scilley Isles), but he lacks the management and interpersonal skills for a cruise liner. The only dreadful member of staff was the "headmistress" - whose booming hectoring awoke us around 08:00 every morning. All in all, good staff, led by poor management. Worryingly, the lifeboat drill before we sailed was a total shambles. In over an hour, I doubt anyone knew what was happening. Thankfully, we didn't find out "for real". The men organising crewing and driving the tenders (the lifeboats) appeared very good, which was reassuring. Unfortunately, the captain didn't allow enough tenders to be used, resulting in serious delays - in one port, delays of up to 2 hours and more to go ashore. Cabin: Grade 11 Superior Plus Ocean view forward, deck 7 - very good, but lacks an opening window. Read Less

Recently did around British Isles cruise sailing from Tilbury Port of London with CMV on the Magellan. We booked first,then got around to reading reviews.I know,- wrong way round! Anyway after reading the reviews we were left more than a little apprehensive to say the least,(particularly concerning The Marco Polo reviews although this was not the ship we were sailing on). WELL WE NEED NOT TO HAVE WORRIED. First check in and boarding.From parking in CMV car park ( a little expensive at £143),cases into van,us onto bus for short transfer to ship,a swift and smooth form filling and photo,we boarded,went to our cabin and there were our cases already waiting outside our door. From turning the car key parking up to inserting the cabin key in the door- ABOUT 30 Minutes.THAT IS IMPRESSIVE and hassle free. SHIP.- Absolutely NO COMPLAINTS.Clean and comfy. Staff and Crew.-Friendy helpful and efficient. FOOD.-Excellent,vairied and plentiful whether using posh restaurants or informal bistro. Entertainment.-Plenty and of reasonable standard. Itinerary.-Excellent with good shore trips. Another good point is that the drink prices are NOT heavily loaded.About the same as you would pay in your local.However opt for the "drink package" at £17 per person per day and this could be expensive unless you drink like a fish! However the onboard shops are a little limited in there range and selection of goods. All in all a very enjoyable cruise and we considered good value for money. One other highlight.The secret garden at the back of the ship.One deck down from the promenade deck and protected by the above overhang.Astra turf,comfortable garden furniture style seating and tables and electric wall heaters left on all the time.A quiet,romantic warm area with views back over the stern,- a perfect place to enjoy a quiet intimate drink after dinner,and on our cruise seemingly undiscovered by most of the passengers. NOTE.- this cruise was a "no children"and the average age must have been in senior citizen range,BUT does not imply it was old or fuddy duddy in any way although Sinatra's dance club was a little under attended.
