we've just come back from majestic fjords with beautiful scenery and weather but alas was a disaster the ship was full the room was small uncomfortable and very noisy broken sleep with funnel next door no transfer of room available several complaints unresolved reception issues couldn't get a buffet table was like being on a Costa ship Also the cost was very reasonably priced on the face of it.. but.. When you factors in cost of excursions and car parking then not so reasonable. So.. if the basics are not right.. then you can't really fully enjoy the good bits. Good Majestic fjord land Very relaxing with beautiful scenery Awesome in fact but that's the natural side of fjords for you with 3d passages that melt away and mountain overhangs you can almost touch as the ship sails through occasional narrow channels but you have to be up on deck at the right time to see them 1 particular spot was like the scene from Jason and the argonauts were Neptune pops up out of the water to save the ship from clashing cliff tops. Weather from other previous holiday comments weather could be very wet especially in Bergen but Unexpectedly the weather was gloriously sunny all week although occasionally very windy and cold Room Free use of safe Tea making but limited with small table and kettle Only 2 sockets in room Bed very uncomfortable and small for me Food Good value food with excellent English breakfast On gala and captains night the cuisine was excellent on other nights could be average though Cream teas and biscuits are to die for unfortunately everyone else felt the same.! when everyone comes back from days out at same time there are queues and shoving going on then finding a table is difficult too when ship is at capacity, which rather takes most of the pleasure out of it. The food is very good in general if not repetitive tho, sometimes bland and not very hot all of the time but one has to remember the cost of some of the cruises. The service is good in general as the staff trying hard to accommodate everyone but again because of this you can be waiting for 15 mins or more for a drink in certain bars. Cocktails of the day are usually very good and reasonably cheap at £3.50 per day. They did a wheat beer at same price which was a bonus as it's 1 of my favourites even tho its £1.25 in aldis I was just happy to see it as most cruises don't seem to accommodate wheat beer usually Bad Beds uncomfortable Small room and shower Tv poor Our room 5111 very noisy all day and all night Also had smelly gas smells from engines and main funnel Complained twice but not taken seriously. Like trying to sleep on a rollercoaster 1st time they sprayed carpet for smells 2nd time gave me ear plugs which were not adequate. Said they were full and couldn't change my room but found out later that they hold back some rooms in case of emergency. So our 50th and 60th birthday holiday was spoiled through lack of sleep and rest. 1st dining time too early and 2nd too late Only 1 buffet restaurant which was packed full several times with no spare tables and a scramble to get anything. The 2 main service restaurants too slow when busy and food some times not hot enough even when not busy. Excursions over priced and not good value when you can walk off and do some of the so called tours for nothing or a lot less when you just pop into tourist information and a small "what's available?" I don't usually write reviews for cruises but having travelled on the Magellan three times I feel the need to add some balance to all the negative reviews posted on this site. I've just come back from another great holiday, sailing from Newcastle to Norway for seven nights. The Magellan is an old ship and can never compete with the new-build state of the art ships run by Royal Caribbean etc, but what it does excell at is excellent service and value for money. We were in an inside cabin on deck four. "Isn't that down with the crew and the engines?" one ill-informed and rather stuck up fellow passenger asked me. It was a room for two, with plenty of space and a comfortable bed. I have a very sensitive sense of smell and despite what's been written here before, there was no smell of diesel or sewage. Nor were we stricken down by the killer air conditioning. The room was serviced twice a day and I slept well every night of the cruise. The low, mid-ship position of the cabin meant I didn't feel any motion when the ship was moving. The passenger decks are all clean and comfortable, with enough bars and sitting areas to move around across the day. The quality of food and drinks are where CMV really excels. I've done six previous cruises with Royal Caribbean and Celebrity and can honestly say that the food and wine selection onboard Magellan are far superior to those companies. We had all our meals in the ala carte restaurants to avoid the buffet scrum and I enjoyed every one. We also ate in the speciality restaurant Fusion, which was open two nights of the cruise, and this too was outstanding. We took out the VIP drinks package, which is far cheaper than packages on Royal Caribbean, with a much better wine selection (I think the quality of wine included in RC's packages really let them down). It also included a private cocktail party which was a nice opportunity to meet other people, and allowed 50% off the speciality restaurant. The service from all staff is excellent. Another area in which CMV scores over it's bigger competitors. There are always staff on hand to take drink orders, and if you do go to the bar to order for yourself, someone will bring the order to your seat. Even at very busy times, such as after the evening show, I never waited long to be served. I enjoyed the entertainment this cruise. No, it's not as expensively produced as on other lines, but the main theatre shows are all well performed by a talented team, headed by Cruise Director Jonathan Dulson. We weren't interested in the craft activities but there seemed to be something on every day for those who were. I did hear a lot of moaning from other passengers but it was all ridiculous stuff. "This porridge is made with milk, I wanted it with water." Someone else was very rude to a waiter when she didn't receive a plate of fruit with her breakfast , a plate of fruit she didn't order in the first place. People complained when they turned up at the ala carte restaurant and there was no buffet there. All absolute rubbish from people who should take responsibility for there own failings rather than moan. We met someone else so mean spirited that he'd worked out how much he thought the staff would make in gratuities, and then bragged how he'd stolen a pen from a waiter. I suspect all these people will delight in posting their negative reviews but don't believe it. As mentioned above this is my third time on Magellan and I loved it. Would we book again? My husband and I chose this cruise not just for its itinerary and reasonable cost but for the convenience of the return trip from Liverpool; disembarkation went smoothly but we were surprised our hand luggage was not scanned or inspected in any way, we could have been carrying anything - very disturbing given the times we live in. The Magellan is very dated, desperately in need of a refit. Public areas are drab and uninteresting but there are plenty of places to sit. We had an outside cabin which again was set in a time warp but it was quite spacious, ample storage and the bathroom quite roomy. There didn't have to be much of a swell for it to creak and groan which sometimes kept us awake. The walls seemed to be very thin as we often heard nextdoor's TV and the toilet flushing, also it got very hot and stuffy due to the air conditioning knob not being adjustable. Dining had its ups and downs - mostly downs. Raffles Bistro is the self service option which was a nightmare at breakfast, obviously not big enough with insufficient seating, most mornings we were forced to sit outside which was quite chilly and uncomfortable. We did try the other two restaurants for breakfast and lunch but the Bistro had more choice, better fare and we didn't have to put up with some of the ill disciplined waiting staff's shoddy service and lack of decorum. There was far too much fooling around, loud chatter, singing and banging of crockery. From behind the waiters' stations we heard one say to his colleague 'move your ass' when he came in with a tray of meals and on another occasion a waiter mimmicked a northern English accent. Our designated restaurant for the evening was the Waldorf, I might add that our two waiters were very pleasant and attentive, one of whom even gave us a napkin folding after our meal. But mostly we ate in the Bistro as there weren't many people - guaranteed table for two, it had a cloth on it and we had a view - happy days! In and around the bars a few of the barmen and male waiting staff had the same clowning around attitude but most were very professional and good at their job. We found all the female waiting staff extremely efficient, attentive and you certainly didn't have to wait long to be served. The entertainment was dire, especially the singing which was amateurish, out of tune and performed with fake American accents. Far better was heard from passengers on the karoke night, one girl sang 'Fields of Gold' - she was superb; knocked spots off the so called professionals. As for the comedian, well, he was an embarrassment and totally inappropriate, not only were his 'jokes' lame and inane but he sang some ditties ridiculing world leaders, one targeting Mugabe, the lyrics of Old MacDonald changed to that he no longer had a farm - this odious creep thought that it was funny that people had lost their way of life and their livestock in such horrible cruel acts of violence. I can't comment on the shore excursions as we made our own way around. Activities such as paper plane folding and creating flowers from crepe paper and plastic bottles didn't exactly appeal so just as well we took the £17 p/p p/d drinks package which was very good value and worth doing, so no complaints there. Overall, even though we had our gripes, we saw the places we set out to, seeing beautiful scenery. I know it's a cliche saying 'you get what you pay for' but this cruise surely endorsed that. 9 nights was enough. And no, I wouldn't go with CMV again. Read Less

We chose this cruise because the dates fitted perfectly for us and we wanted to go to the fjords. The cruise and maritime website prior to embarkation was very useful and the information was received in a timely manner and was informative. The price of this cruise was very good. I gave my review this title because of the reviews I read beforehand, although I always work on the basis that many people who review are either 'rants or ravers' however, I really have to say that it is beyond my comprehension how anyone can find anything about this ship that warrants a negative review! My experience regarding embarkation was very good, not sure how it would be if it was raining as we didn't see any cover. Once at the ship we were very quickly processed. Staff took us to our cabin and we then went off for a drink. We were upgraded, our cabin was at the front of the ship and we like many felt vibration and movement and noticed this through to day 3. Having only ever being on bigger ships this was very noticeable to us. We got the drinks package and it was well worth it for us. We saved the receipts and worked out that it would have cost well over a hundred pound more if we hadn't taken it. I usually only drink red wine but did try a number of cocktails which I really enjoyed. The wine (in my opinion) was beautiful, 14% Tempranillo, I would highly recommend this. We ate in the buffet, had lunch in both restaurants and 1 breakfast in one restaurant. We had dinner in the Kensington. The food was nicely presented in the restaurant and the service was excellent. Dinner was 5 course and lunch was 4, lots of variety and all enjoyable. I couldn't complain about the food at all. The service at the bars and around was first rate. The lectures we attended were good. The shows were average, but this is an entertainment team and not professional performers. We didn't do any excursions, preferring to do our own which were easy enough and significantly cheaper. The seating areas were obviously very busy when everybody was on the ship, however, seats could be found fairly easily and people tended to move around a lot, I didn't see any saving of seats in the lounge areas. I was impressed at the number of staff in all departments, the whole ship is spotless and cleaners were constantly stationed by each toilet area and were always in and out cleaning. I have to mention our wonderful cabin steward who was first rate and such a genuinely nice and discreet chap. I would recommend this ship and company and would go with them again. If you are reading having booked, please do not be worried by anything negative you may have read, go with an open mind and enjoy yourselves. If you want a 5* ship with butler service, you'll have to pay a lot more than the excellent value for money cruise, with 5* staff that you will experience with the Magellan. Read Less

First cruise ever, so we were a little apprehensive. But as the Magellan ship is a small/medium size it is a good choice for a first cruise. Embarking at Newcastle was great and very easy. The steward met us and showed us our free upgrade room from the 4th deck to the 7th. We were surprised how big the cabin looked, and the bathroom & shower were bigger than we had hoped for.there was shampoo & shower gel dispenser in the shower and little bars of soap on the sink. The room had a big picture window was made the room very light and airy. Plenty of wardrobe space & the TV had bbc,itv etc. We didn't take the drinks package at £17 per person but plenty did and many said they had got there money's worth. But drinks are not expensive on board so we just paid as we went along. The food was a bit of hit & miss but overall the Raffles Bistro faired better than the restaurants for food. If you eat in the restaurants you get free coffe,tea & water. The shows on board were ok, although to be fair we didn't bother much with them. All the staff are just so lovely, nothing was too much trouble. You do pay £5 per day for tips which will be added to your bill at the end of the cruise. I read some reviews that said take your own water bottle, but there is a big sign on the water dispenser that tells you not to, so we didn't as it makes perfect sense health wise. Staff offer you antibacterial gel for your hands at every restaurant which again is a thing you must do to protect not only yourself but the other passengers. My disembarkation was a mess, as I hold a USA passport they make you walk to the bus them onto the terminal to go through immigration and as it was snowing very heavily I got soaked and had to return to the ship to disembark an hour later. No staff told me this otherwise I wouldn't have packed my jacket! Don't bother paying for the wifi, it's just rubbish and not worth the money as it ties so long to get onto it, even to just check emails is just so frustrating. If you want a leisurely cruise without all the nonsense of the big mega ships try this ship. Read Less

Great ship. Excellent friendly staff. Spotlessly clean. Cabins good size. Food very good. Nothing we didn't like and there were 6 of us. Entertainment great, something for every one. You are given plenty of time on shore to see the sites. Can highly recommended them. Wonderful time and didn't want to get off. Will definitely book another cruise with them. Nothing for children though. Adult cruise only I would say. Read Less
