The date of sailing and port suited my family and myself. Slight hickup on boarding. Cabin was comfortable. Could be better with a kettle in the room. Dining room was remarkable. Staff were pleasant, friendly, professional and only willing to help. We had a cold and they willingly provided honey and lemon at dinner. All the meals were of a high quality and most tasty and flavoursome. We had the best lamb curry which was prepared by the executive chef. On the whole, we had a wonderful time and will travel on the ship again. We tried to have meals in the restuarants as it helped to save time finding a table. Choice of meals were wide ranging and special diets were catered for. Entertainment was adequate during the day and evening shows were wonderful. Exiting the ship was made simple by friendly staff and there was a shuttle bus provided for one of the cities visied. All the cities were wonderful, as well as the trip. Read Less

Having read some of the negative reviews about Magellan I can't say I was exactly looking forward to our recent trip but my fears were unfounded. From start to finish the cruise was absolutely amazing. Our arrival at the Tilbury car park was easy and hassle free - our luggage was whisked off and we boarded the shuttle bus to the departure lounge. There was a long queue but everyone was attended to very quickly and we had soon had our photos taken and received our security passes and were on board. We were taken to our cabins - 4117 and 4119 and our luggage was waiting for us!! We had taken extra coat hangers, as we had read that there weren't many coat hangers and this is true so pack a few extra. However that is the only downside - everything else in our cabin was perfect. There is plenty of soap (a dispenser in the shower), loads of storage space and a really brilliant shower. I have to say it was great being on the lower deck too as we made ourselves walk up to decks 8, 9, 10 and 11 where all the action was to make us feel better for all that amazing food we were eating!! The food can absolutely NOT be criticised in any way. I think the fact they have two restaurants, the Kensington and Waldorf where you are allocated a table for your entire stay is a brilliant idea and we ate in our allocated Kensington every night. Despite having intentions to try the Bistro we never did as it was just so nice to have a 5 course meal served at our table. These restaurants are also used for breakfast and lunch although that is free seating, and they do get busy although we always found a seat in the Waldorf when we did go to breakfast. More often than not my husband and I skipped breakfast (which finished at 10 - a tad early for us!!), and then had lunch in the Bistro - we always managed to find a seat but I do admit it gets busy there. I never saw anything duplicated in the 12 nights we were on board - we had something different every day for lunch and dinner and the food really was brilliant and beautifully served. We took advantage of the wine package which is £85 for 5 bottles of wine and 10 of water although we swapped the 10 bottles of water for an extra bottle of wine. I think you would need to have a serious alcohol problem to make the £17 per person per day drinks package worthwhile!! Having read earlier reviews as to the expense of the drinks nothing is further from the truth - cocktails for £4!!! And very nice ones too. They have a tea/coffee station open 24/7 in the Bistro so we never had to buy a coffee. My husband would agree about the Liptons tea - maybe because of complaints they now have round bags (Typhoo??) in the Bistro which he reckoned were much better. The entertainment was brilliant - the Carmen Duo were amazing and we tried to go to Hamptons Bar most nights to listen to them. All the entertainment was great - we went to every show, but the Guest Acts, Les Bryan who was brilliant and such a lovely man too, and Lawrence Robinson gave two performances each and they were exceptional. The dancers and singers are lovely young people and some of the shows they did - especially the penultimate night "Magellan's Voyage" was absolutely brilliant. It was so nice to be able to get straight off the ship and be in the centre of town everywhere we visited which is exactly what we did - no problem at all. We did book the organised excursions in St. Petersburg so we didn't have to worry about a visa and they were really good trips - well worth the money. We found at every port the disembarkation was managed exceptionally well - except in Stockholm when the people who had not booked excursions were called - and then the excursions so it turned into a bit of a bun fight which was a shame when they had done so well the entire cruise - it didn't help that this was our only port of call where it was raining. We used the gym several times - there seems to be plenty of equipment for the amount of people who actually use it - although they only have one mat for floor work!! The water is perfectly safe to drink from the tap and, in fact, my sister used that water all the time although we bought bottled water in a couple of the ports and had no trouble taking it on board. On our last day, when obviously everyone had had to vacate their cabin by 10, it was pretty busy everywhere but even then we found somewhere to sit and they still had games and quizzes in the Captains Club that morning. I agree with other reviewers that if you get the chance to do the "behind the scenes" tours of the galley and the bridge - do as it gives a great insight in to what goes on and how hard they all work - especially in the galley. I have to say I can't imagine why people in their 70's think it would be nice to have families and kids around - we are in our 60's and have children but the big plus for us was not having families with young children around - the cruise is advertised as that so why would you expect young families on board??? Perhaps they should have taken their own kids with them. The express disembarkation was a huge plus at the end of the cruise and we were off the ship and on the road in 45 minutes!! We have been on several cruises before on Thomsons and Ocean Village and, to be honest, my husband has not been keen but he truly loved this cruise. I do think the big plus for us was having the allocated seating in a lovely restaurant - on previous cruises we have been required to book the restaurants and even pay extra!! Of course I'm sure cruisers who are used to cruising on P&O and such like would find this a bit "down market" but we found it incredibly enjoyable and it so surpassed our expectations. None of us would have any hesitation in booking again - and I can't wait!! Read Less
