We booked this highly-touted HAL EXC 6-Week Japan/ Western Pacific cruise back in May 2018, & expected great things. Suffice it to say that it turned out to be the most over-hyped & disappointing cruise we've every endured! We feel that the HAL marketing team sold us a bill of goods, & are guilty of false advertising at the very least! The HAL EXC cruise concept (available only on Maasdam) ...

This was one of few cruises out of San Francisco with a tour of Alaska and onward to Japan (21 days) with a circle Northern Japan for an additional 14 days. Itinerary: This ship visited several ports not normally on the Alaska cruise circuit including Unalaska (Dutch Harbor) and Nome (tendering was canceled due to weather), three ports in Russia, and a couple in north Japan before stopping in ...

We boarded the Maasdam in Sydney on 1/15/17., destination San Diego, 39 days later. The agenda was terrific; Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific Islands, Hawaii...pretty much to die for. We only missed one port in the agenda and that was due to the ship having a guaranteed passenger. Denied entry into Niue, a sparely populated island just north of Tonga. First time I ever saw that happen! ...

We liked the itinerary, the time of year and the size of the ship. The trip was perfect. There were plenty of sea days to enjoy the daily activities, interesting ports of call and thankfully perfect weather. The onl;y disappointment was missing Mystery Island because of a lapse in the weather but t his happens, Food was outstanding even though a previous reviewer could not eat between ...

Some Highs, Some Lows But Overall A Good Cruise

We chose this Australia-bound cruise on the Maasdam as it ticked several key boxes. Foremost was our preference for smaller, more intimate ships that offer more of the Old-School cruising experience. The embarkation port and itinerary were also important given the easy proximity of the Seattle gateway and our desire for a broad survey of Polynesia and Melanesia on our way Down Under. For ...

Chose the cruise for the ports. Made it to Anchorage without any issues, but then Captain said two storms coming in, so skipped three ports and a glacier to get out ahead of the storm. Skagway and another glacier substituted. Headed to Skagway to ride out the storm, which never materialized, only sprinkles in Skagway and no rough seas as predicted of 86 mph winds and 25' seas. Before we left ...
