We were invited by another family member to accompany them. We travel a lot but had never been on a river cruise or any kind of cruise before. It was wonderful! The Viking staff was extremely organized and all travel to and from airports and then each destination was executed perfectly and in an extremely timely manner! All the buses for transport were luxury. I have some food allergies and sensitivities and each day I met with Peter, one of the officers, to go over my meals for the day. He was patient, helpful and kind and had great ideas and recommendations. Thank you to the Chef! Also Dan was our primary server for food and he helped me out with that so much! — making sure that my special needs were taken care of. Again, all of this was done with such kindness and consideration. Vladimir and Tony made great wine recommendations! And Bruno was also helpful with that! The tour guides that Viking hires are all amazing! Everyone of our tour guides was knowledgeable and interesting. Frances and Natalie we’re both not only knowledgeable and interesting but also really fun and engaging! The night tour of Viviers and the walled city of Avignon and Pope’s Palace there we are among our favorites. So interesting! I know that Viking isn’t responsible for the French people, but all of the places where we visited as tourists, we were so well received by the French people! They were so pleasant and nice even if someone did not speak French! Such a wonderful, interesting, fun experience— That was easy. The Viking Delling was a beautiful boat. Sparkling clean -5 stars on everything! Thank you Philip for doing an amazing job keeping our room spotless. Another thing that I thought was so nice, upon returning to the ship after each tour there was a little treat of some type. If it was cold outside there was a hot beverage waiting, at night time there was a yummy little mini berry milkshake waiting for us, unusual refreshing juices were another item.. I was also surprised that there were interesting talks or activity on board almost every day either about World War II and the area we were in or just educational sessions on the Provence area or a cooking demonstration or French tea. Unexpected and engaging. And you could do as much or as little as you wanted. Again, everything was so well organized and executed perfectly and I thought it was an amazing value. Thank you to the Captain of the Viking Delling and the entire staff! They all know and do their jobs extremely well and with great customer service skills and wonderful sense of humor! Looking forward to our next Viking River cruise experience! Read Less

The crew on this ship seemed to go out of their way to make the cruise as enjoyable as possible for all the passengers. There were quite a few unexpected occurrences they had to deal with ( like a train strike the day the pre-cruise people were supposed to come from Paris to Lyon to board the ship). They just hired a bus to bring them and then greeted them with campaign and an apology. Another unexpected issue was a bent prop from debris in the river on the next to last day. They again hired buses to take everyone to the next appointed stop. The food was excellent, the Cruise Directors was outstanding, and the crew and wait staff were all very capable and personable. The excursion choices were all very educational and entertaining. Each of the local guides that Viking hired were very knowledgeable and gave those of us in their group good advice, information and directions to places (call that shopping) we asked to go after the tour. We had quite a few days of rain so the "exercise top deck" was not available very much. Read Less

We selected this cruise solely because of the dates and location. And we would could not have selected a more perfect experience. The crew was magnificent; attentive, friendly, cheerful, kind, and seemed to enjoy their work experience as much as we enjoyed our vacation. Our cabin, a veranda state room, was compact but comfortable and beautifully appointed. The food was lovely, with choices to satisfy any taste or dietary needs. The excursions were just right - knowledgeable guides, educational (without being pedantic), and well geared toward the demographic of the passengers most of who were 60-70+. Not too strenuous, but not boring. The tours ranged from three or four busloads of participants for the included tours, and some optional excursions with as few as 6-8 people. These were very special - particularly our canoeing on the Rhone and trip to the Camargue. There were so many excursions to chose from, that we missed some of the sites we wanted to include. One of the highlights was the Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD. The Camargue was fantastic - the wild coast, a lovely bird sanctuary packed with flamingos, the indigenous horses and bulls, and charming villages. Read Less

We chose this Viking cruise because we love France. We had never taken a river cruise before, only ocean cruises, but we thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Our friends had taken several riverboat cruises with Viking and suggested we go. We liked the smaller boat and the fact that there were less than 200 guests, making it more intimate. The service on the Viking Delling was superb, the free tours as well as the paid excursions couldn’t have been better! We met wonderful people on the cruise as well. All in all a wonderful experience and we are already planning to take another trip on Viking next year....hopefully with free airfare again. That was a plus in our decision to take a Viking cruise initially. We also enjoyed extending our trip before and after visiting two other countries. Viking employees picked us up from the airport and got us back for our other flights on time and that was also important to our travel plans. The dining experience was top notch. The wait staff were very attentive and gracious. The good was great for the most part. We enjoyed the different dining options either in the dining room for dinner, and inside or outside for lunch. Free wine and beer at lunch and dinner was also a nice perk. Read Less

We did a pre cruise to Paris and had a MARVELOUS time. Super tour of Paris too. We then headed to Lyon by train....no concerns!!! They bused us to the ship and we got on board with a lovely lunch. Only problem, the temps in Europe were outrageous! 100 degrees plus most of the trip! We drank LOADS of water needless to say!!! Our cabin was small but we were very comfortable. We had a standard cabin which was perfect. All our stops and land excursions were amazing. We purchased a couple of ones and they too went beyond our expectations !!!! The river itinerary was excellent!!! The food was beyond outstanding!!!! Always something for everyone. The wines were excellent too (we did not have a beverage package). The entertainment was good, especially the locals coming on board for the evening!!! We were lucky one of our travel companions is a performer and the pianist allowed her to sing!!!! We made many friends onboard too. This is our second river boat cruise and it was just as wonderful as the first one!!!! We'll be back! :) Also need to mention, we used Viking air and it was perfect. Thanks, Viking, for a wonderful celebration of our 30th wedding anniversary!!!! Read Less

We spent a couple of days in Paris before the cruise to get ourselves acclimated to the time zone. To get to Lyon, we took the high speed train, which unfortunately was not high speed . There seemed to be some mechanical problem, but there was no communication as to why we were stopped for quite a bit of time, and it was quite hot in the train as there was no ventilation. When we finally got to Lyon, everything went smoothly, including embarkation and all the pre-cruise activities such as the safety drill. We signed up for all the included shore excursions plus several optional tours. All the tour guides were very informative and gave us ample time to go on our own as well. All the meals, evening entertainment and services were as we had come to expect of a Viking cruise. All staff were very friendly and helpful. This time we opted for a french balcony stateroom expecting to get to have a great view out of our balcony. Since the vessel was always tied up next to another vessel while on port, we had to keep the drapes closed all the time. We got to have the pleasure of seeing the view only when we were underway, which was a very limited time, since the distances between ports of call were quite short. There was very little cruising time and it was not as scenic as the Duoro river cruise. The optional shore excursion to Les Baux de Provence was nothing like anything we've ever experienced. It was well worth the time and money. We thought that it was the highlight of our trip. We are now excited to be planning our next cruise on Viking Ocean Cruises next year. Read Less

A river cruise through southern France was the perfect way to get to know this region, with the least amount of stress. Viking provided a most comfortable accommodation on board, excellent food, outstanding guided tours and wonderful service overall. We enjoyed our extended tour in Paris as well with Viking. The bonus on Viking is getting to know other passengers and having companionship while traveling. This was our second Viking River cruise and we will travel with them again. Our flights were also well timed with no issues. We flew from US to Paris, enjoyed 3 nights in Paris, took the Viking booked train to Lyon, all transfers went smoothly. Then we extended our European trip to Barcelona. It was up to us to book transfer from the ship to the train station in Avignon. We had the staff schedule us a cab, no problem. The train to Barcelona was very fast and comfortable. After 5 days in Barcelona, we flew out, on our return flight booked through Viking. We prefer to upgrade flight to economy plus, and there are added fees for doing any changes, but the overall price is still better with Viking! Read Less

We wanted to take a cruise and looked first at cruises within the United States but it was actually less expensive to go to Europe with Viking and the airfare was outstanding with Viking taking care of all the details. It was a "no brainer" to us. Viking met us at the airport and provided bus transportation to the ship. They took care of our luggage and delivered it to our room. Disembarkation was smooth as well with Viking taking care of all the details including taking our luggage to the bus and the bus itself. The ship was clean as was our cabin. Dining was outstanding. The food was excellent, the variety vast, and the featured local specialties were fun. There was some ship-based entertainment which was fun and we particularly enjoyed the cultural presentations. The service was beyond reproach. Every employee was courteous and went out of his or her way to make sure we were accommodated. The selection or ports and the included excursions were great. We also went on several optional excursions which were well planned and definitely a good value. We have already scheduled another cruise this year with Viking. Read Less

because we knew from previous experience the high standard of Viking and we had not been to the south of France before we chose the Lyon and Provence trip which met our expectations perfectly. We particularly enjoyed the narrow gauge railway trip in to the mountains but the highlight was the trip to the Camargue and the the close up contact with the wild horses as well as the tractor trip into the farmer's fields to see the bulls. We were celebrating an anniversary which was marked on board personally by the staff. We had no issues before during and after the cruise and we cannot praise too highly the whole experience which is why we are planning a further cruise this summer with Viking Ocean Cruises to the Alaska Inner Passage. As travellers of a more mature age we appreciate the age limits that apply to Viking cruises and the high ratio of staff to guests provides the personal attention that completes the experience. Wanted to visit Provence and this was the perfect way to do it. Staying right the heart of cities like Lyon and Avignon allows scope for independent sight seeing. As a past customer I had high expectations of the service and food and I was not disappointed. Such a varied itinerary with cities and rural communities. Some of the Roman remains were fascinating, especially the Pont du Gard Aquaduct. Our optional excursion to the Camargue was very interesting and I enjoyed getting so close to the flamingos. The facilities on board are excellent and the service always feels personalised. The attention to detail, such as handing out warm hand towels to refresh you on return to the boat from an excursion are much appreciated. The pick up and return to the airport were well handled. The extension in Nice added a final flourish and the Viking representatives at the hotel were very helpful in recommending places to eat and where to visit. Read Less

The entire staff was the best, always available if we had any questions, and able to help with anything. The food and wine were excellent, and we had great local guides on our outings. My adult daughter and I had a terrific time, and enjoyed every minute. We met some lovely people on board, and we both loved the smaller sized ship. Our cabin was perfect for us - but we really didn't spend much time there. We didn't partake of the entertainment, as after a leisurely dinner, we were ready to relax and get ready for the next day's adventure. Shore excursions were diverse and very interesting. We particularly loved the hike through the vineyard (with a wine tasting afterward, of course!), and our cooking class. We loved learning some of the history and sampling food and wine in the smaller towns along our route on the Rhone River. We are ready to go again! Read Less

Friends raved about the quality of Viking River Cruises, so when we found what we felt to be a great deal, we decided to indulge ourselves. We loved every minute! Crew on the Delling was totally professional and also very welcoming, attentive and fun. They appeared to enjoy what they did, and set that mood for all. There were so many “little touches” that enhanced the experience: aperitifs at dockside as we returned from shore excursions, French accordion player to welcome us back onboard one afternoon, evening stop just to tour a small medieval town at night, and more. The food was wonderful. We always opted to return to eat lunch rather than eating in towns. And it was so convenient—we always docked at the town, so never a long hike to return. My party of 4 women all over 60 plans to take another Viking River Cruise in the near future. We feel confident that, even though it may not be on the Delling, it will be just as great. Read Less

This was my 6th cruise with Viking. Needless to say, I'm hooked. I absolutely loved the Delling!! When Michael Bright greeted me as I boarded the ship, I knew I would have a great cruise. Michael was the cruise director on a previous Paris to Normandy trip I had been on and it was fabulous!! Needless to say, he made this trip unforgettable. I was amazed to see how different southern France was with its beautiful mountains and vineyards. The excursions offered in this trip let me see Provence from many venues. In Avignon, they offered a tour called "The Flavors of Provence". After tasting the local favorites, we ended up in a private home for a cooking class with a chef and the owner of this beautiful house. This is something I have always wanted to do. I love meeting the people of the area this way. My room was the Veranda Suite which was composed of two rooms. I was traveling with a friend of mine who likes to stay up late so this room was perfect. Everyday we were given fresh fruit which was a delight. The food was delicious as always. Most of the time Carol and I ate breakfast and dinner in the Aquavit Lounge. It is quieter. At night we would sit at the bar with Radka (the best bartender ever) as Gino played the piano. I have to say, Gino was adorable. He played songs that I loved. And he was so helpful with getting the lounge ready for the evening. I always looked forward to Michael presenting the next day's excursions. The excursions would not have gone as well as they did without Michael's guidance and leadership. The bar with Radka at the helm was superb. The trip was perfect. I already have three more trips planned. In April, I am taking the Paris to Normandy trip again. Read Less

We had always wanted to go on a River Cruise and friends of ours recommended the Lyon to Avignon cruise so we booked it. From the moment we arrived on the ship to the time we left for home we were impressed with the amenities and the hospitality of the ship's crew. We arrived early on the first day having taken an early flight from LHR to Lyon and since we were the only ones on our flight we had the pleasure of getting a private car from the airport to the ship. Since we arrived early (at about 10am), our room was not ready so we checked our luggage with the front desk and had a nice chat with a couple who were getting ready to depart. I thought we were going to have to wait until 3pm, but we were pleasantly surprised that our room was ready at about 11am! We got a short tour of the room and after we unpacked it was time for lunch. The included excursions were good for the most part and for the majority of our time we had good weather. It was only the last full day when we had rain. We did two of the optional tours ("Beaujolais and Truffles" and "the Flavors of Provence") and would recommend them highly. Overall, we would recommend this cruise to others. I would have liked to spend more time in Avignon, but now that I have been to that part of France I would probably go back to Lyon and Avignon. Read Less

I chose Viking because of the 2-room veranda suite. I compared the suites from all other river cruise lines and Viking had everything I wanted: my own personal veranda, spacious rooms, wonderful shower. It was my first river cruise and I enjoyed everything that Viking could provide. It was my first trip to France so I didn't know what to expect in terms of the river vistas, which were a bit underwhelming, and I was taken aback by the nuclear reactors along the river. But that is just a fact of life in France--nothing that Viking can control. The amenities on board were superb--food, drink, service and entertainment. I don't drink anything alcoholic, but my husband assured me that all the complementary and optional wine choices were first rate. All the food choices were marvelous. I normally avoid sweets, but the desserts could not be resisted. Merci beaucoup Viking Buri. Read Less

Overall a well rounded experience. Everything went smoothly and appreciated the staff caring for one guest at a time, even in the group excursions. The facilities were comfortable and cruising was gentle. only problem was when another ship would park next to ours and we would lose the view and some privacy. The food was very good, good variety and reflected the region and country. The entertainment completed well the day experience. The included shore excursions were very didactic and made interesting by the tour guides. They were appropriate and we did not go on any optional tours. Provence and the Rhône—a feast for all your senses! The food, the wine, the art, the scenery—nothing disappointed. The crew of the Delling went above and beyond. Drinks were created and made to order. The food was all in keeping with the flavors of Provence. Every dinner (except for the first night) was enjoyed on the Aquavit Terrace—there is nothing better than al fresco dining with new friends with the scenery of the Rhône Valley as your backdrop. Special kudos go to our main server Lukas who did anything we called on him to do. Carlos and Veronica and Michael were so accommodating. Our bartender was amazing in creating and recommending spectacular cocktails. From the time we arrived in Paris for our pre-cruise tour to our embarkation in Lyon to our disembarkation in Avignon, we didn’t have to worry about a thing. Bags were transferred and tours went off without a hitch. Our best shore excursion was our cooking class in Avignon—what fun. We discovered the nuances of the wines from both the Beaujolais region as well as the Cotes du Rhône region and will now seek some of the superior wines of each. We experienced the locales and the scenery that was the inspiration of the art of Van Gogh. We learned about the French resistance during World War II. Viking definitely cares about giving its guests memories which will last a life time. Thank you for an extraordinary experience. Read Less

The extra trips we paid for were well worth the money and again well planned and entertaining. We had time at different ports to explore on our own or just relax in the sparkling cabins. They were so clean and tastefully decorated. All in all it was a magnificent trip so well worth the effort and money. I plan on going on another Viking trip very soon. I have been suggesting this particular river cruise on the Rhone for the last couple of years and my wife surprised me for our anniversary and my birthday to gift this to me. Since I am a culinarian/foodie, I believed this was one of the best opportunities to cover a lot of ground in a short week, and we did. Three of our excursions were to different wine regions with the first being in Beaujolais, the second in Cruzes Hermitage and the third in the Chateneuf de Pape . Stopping in Viene, I was able to stop by La Pyramid, the heart of where modern cuisine started in the 1950's with Fernand Point, the great chef of this restaurant that trained the great chefs of the time including Paul Bocuse, Roger Verge and the Troisgras brothers.. Of course, Bocuse's restaurant is in Lyon which is the gastronomic center of French Cuisine today. Viene also had an incredible farmers' market which we were told is the second largest in France. We were not disappointed with many offerings of cheese and charcuterie that were over the top. Besides culinary history of our cruise being front and center for me, I loved the historic significance of our river cruise as well especially as we headed south to the Provence area visiting Arles, the home of many impressionist such as Van Gogh and Avignon with the Palace of the Popes. While the very worthwhile hectic travel schedule we created for ourselves, it was amazing the incredible service and hospitality we received on the Delling. The staff couldn't do enough for us and made us feel very welcomed and comfortable. I am in the hospitality business and the Delling staff represented the quintessential expression of hospitality. All personnel on the ship were so down to earth and non-pretentious contributing greatly to our unforgettable experience at all levels of management. There light-hearted play amoht the staff was welcomed and tasteful. The entertainment on board was enjoyable. Generally the food was very good with a very wide selection at all times and the ease in which a special dietary request was made. I can only think of 2 minor examples of where I thought the food fell a little short which is a minor complaint since it was excellent overall. The first dinner found some of the items over seasoned, and on the second evening the crab cakes were short of their mark especially after they described by the Chef. Again, over all, the chef and his staff did an excellent job. Read Less

I can not wait to go on another Viking River Cruise, I enjoyed every minute, from the staff, excursions, port of calls, and food to the people we met on board. From the start of our trip in the airport, we felt welcomed and were well taken care of by the Viking Staff. Our cabin was roomy unlike most cruise ships. I was fascinated by the information I learned at each port. My only wish was that I could have taped each tour guide, they were all so unique with their life experiences. I found them all knowledgeable and pleasant. They gave us so much information I never will remember it all. The food choices were exceptional. The staff were wonderful, they were helpful and knowledgeable. Each night we were treated with some form of entertainment that was local to the region. I did not miss a workout facility, I walked more and burned calories each day on the included excursions. They were all very enjoyable. We enhanced our trip with three days in Paris. I was very pleased with the accommodations and the tour there. On the tour I left my camera case and flash on the tour bus, our host at the hotel worked his magic, I really thought it was gone for good since the bus was on its way to some other commitment in another part of France, but by the time we left for the ship, my camera case and flash were recovered and back with me. I couldn't have been more grateful. My husband and I can not wait until our next adventure on board! Read Less

We previously cruised the Rhine with another company. Relatives had done the same river with Viking and highly recommended it. We traveled with them on the Heimdal. For my husband and myself, we had been to Paris more than once and wanted to explore more of France. We did enjoy our Rhine River cruise with another company, but prefer the Viking cruise. Of course, the itinerary was different so a completely fair comparison can't be made, but I will say some of the things that put Viking on top. For one, I would say dinner was better. There were more choices. On our previous cruise, chicken was never an option and it is something that we normally eat a lot of at home. The desserts were better on the Heimdal and the chef who gave a preview of his dinner offerings every night was always so enthusiastic. The entire staff of the Heimdal was great. This continued with the guides on all the port excursions. The ship was large enough to accommodate people on the deck at all times, even for meals (unfortunately, the weather was so hot we never did dine there). One thing I especially have to rave about was our post excursion to Nice. We have done a few tours of various places in Europe and anytime we added an extension, we were on our own. Here we had an included tour and a couple of optional ones. The guide in charge of the extension (I believe his name was Bart, if memory serves me well) actually met us at the airport to insure an easy departure. This has NEVER happened before and was especially great because the computers in the terminal went down before we could check in. Bart spent time with each of the travelers in our group and waited with us until things were up and running again (over an hour later) and we went through security. We will definitely sail with Viking again. My husband doesn't even care what the destination is; he just finds it a very relaxing way to travel. It is and allows us to see the world in a less hectic way. Read Less

It’s hard to describe in words. I was so impressed with the staff and the organization right from the start. The food was incredible, I truly have no complaints. I just wish we could afford to do it more often. This was our first trip. The excursions were well planned and very enjoyable. It was very hot but being met with a lovely aperitif when we arrived back on the ship was a bonus. We met some lovely people on our cruise and never once did it feel crowded. The bar staff were very friendly and accommodating and the on ship programs were both informative and enjoyable. We had so much fun at the dance party. I thought the idea of a buffet and a full menu was wonderful, there was more food than any one person could ever eat!! Our cabin was a French Balcony and I would choose that again. All in all the cruise was an amazing experience. Thank you Viking......we are hooked. Read Less
