We chose the cruise because of the wine in the Rhone and the Provencal countryside. Everything was just wonderful, from the staff to the excursions to all our fellow travelers. A teriffic way to experience France. Loved the coffee bar available throughout the day. I appreciate the variety of dining options. Buffet/menu combo is just the right way to satisfy all travelers. The days we cruised in the afternoons were my favorite - as much as i enjoy the excursions, having some downtime is really important to being able to absorb all our daytrips, soak in the sun, visit with friends. Can i suggest adding a fleece vest to the signature Viking clothing in the giftshop? Mom has been on over 9 Viking cruises, but this was her first on the well appointed Longships. This was my first cruise with Viking. It won't be my last! Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Thank you, Viking. Read Less

We took the Lyon/Provence river cruise, with the 3-day post-extension in Nice. From the very beginning, this was a marvelous experience. We did get a chance to explore some of Lyon after checking in at the Viking Buri and unpacking. As was the case in our Grand European cruise in October, 2015, embarkation and disembarkation were as smooth as one could expect. The Viking staff is extremely helpful and courteous; they helped us get settled on day 1 and were there every step of the way through the end of the cruise. Our ship's tour director, Mia, was more than perfect for the job. She took a deep interest in everyone on the ship and was very congenial as well as helpful and well-organized. And her staff was amazing as well! The ship and our cabin were immaculate; the staff worked very hard to make this an almost fairy-tale experience --- we felt like we were a king and a queen! The cabin (we had a French balcony) was well laid out and very roomy and comfy. The food was unbelievably good! The chef met with us each evening before dinner to explain our choices and to make his recommendations, all of which were perfect! The wait staff was very attentive and knew our wine preferences by the second day. All the entertainment and activities on the cruise were well planned, and helped us to make decisions about what we might do in our spare time the next day. There were also great local cultural experiences --- musicians, artisans, singers. Each port provided us with at least one included shore excursion and several other choices after the included excursions --- additional cultural things to experience, local foods to try, and many hidden treasures. As I said earlier, the staff on the ship, top to bottom, went out of their way to make this an unforgettable, top-notch experience! Cabins were cleaned so often that I could not have found a speck of dirt or lint if I had tried. It was almost an "anything you want, I'll get it for you" atmosphere --- I almost felt guilty if I did something for myself. We were so pampered by the staff that we didn't want to go home to have to take care of ourselves!!! There were no children on our cruise; probably the average age of the people on the cruise was about mid-60's. We met many very nice people with whom we have maintained contact, both from the cruise in 2015 and in 2016. We are definitely going to go with Viking again; they seem to be the standard bearers in the industry! Read Less

Survey tour of southern France Traveling without repacking each day meant more time to relax and enjoy. Living on a hotel that is at the center of each city makes for the best experience. The crew was attentive and good humored. Did it rain? I suppose it did but we hardly noticed exploring the shops, cathedrals, and sights. Our red umbrellas kept us together and more than once allowed us to regroup with our tour. Dining with an excellent chef cooking with local ingredients but also enjoying restaurants ashore made for a gastronomic delight. Pairings of local wines made the meals. Dining with a variety of couples introduced us to our intelligent and learned shipmates. The most comfortable way to tour the Rhone ease and learn about the history and current life in southern France. You must do this once but be warned that you will come back again and again. Read Less

This was a cruise tour and our first. Three days in France and two in Dijon. The land part was excellent, with great guides and tour director. The Paris hotel was good and Dijon ok. I cannot say enough about the staff on the Buri. I know that they work long hours for low wages, but they were exceptional. The chef was a wonderful man and we discussed many recipes. For reasons that we were never told, the ship ran aground while sailing. There were only about 20 passengers on board and the staff handled everything professionally. The internet however was atrocious. Viking needs to spend money to upgrade. We were bused once because the water level was low. They acted as if it was a rare occurrence, but it's known that this is a regular thing. They just don't bother telling you. For the price we paid, the rooms were very small. We also spent more time docked than cruising. Our suite was on the water side, otherwise we couldn't have opened our curtains or sit in the verandah. This was a Burgundy and Provence wine cruise. The included wineries chosen were mediocre and not enough. The better winery was optional, with a price tag. Including tips would be beneficial as there was a great discrepancy in everyone's dollar amounts. Viking doesn't give enough of a bang for the money it charges and we won't be taking another cruise, unless corporate makes changes. I would like to reiterate that all the staff is excellent. This cruise was a great disappointment. We only sailed 3 out of 7 days! The first delay was because of river conditions. No other explanation. We were bused to see the sites. The next delay was because the lock operators were on strike. Not Vikings fault and it only meant a delay of 3-4 hours. The next delay was amazing. Many passengers had gone on an excursion. We were to meet them downriver at our next destination. I thought the boat was going very fast. Some of the passengers were watching out the window and saw the boat go straight into the bank! One passenger was knocked off her feet, but luckily was not hurt. The bow was covered in broken trees. The glass around the bow was broken. The captain was able to get the boat off the bank after 20" of going back and forth in reverse. We went back to Avignon to be inspected by a team from Basil. There we stayed. This accident was referred to as "the incident". Our compensation for this was free drinks before and after dinner. Also..the captain was there to say goodbye the next day! Read Less

We extended the cruise by staying 3 days in Paris before boarding our ship in Lyon. We had a wonderful time revisiting sites and dining at wonderful restaurants. Viking arranged for a high speed train to take us to Lyon where boarding the ship was a breeze. The staff was very accommodating and the food was excellently prepared and delicious. We sailed that night and each day was at a different city/ town along the river. The guides were very knowledgeable and it was so easy to follow along with the head sets provided each person. The ship had entertainment at night that enhanced the experience. One night we took a tour of a town we were stopped at and went to the top of a hill to see the view by night. It was magical. Overall it was a wonderful and charming excursion that we would recommend to other cruisers. Read Less

We have been on three Viking Cruises before this one. We thought we would enjoy seeing the Rhone River and we did. The crew was excellent and did a good job of sailing through the many locks on the Rhone. The water level on the Rhone was also high so getting the ship under the bridges was also a challenge. They managed to do a nice job of it. The food was cooked well and there was the normal wide variety of dishes available. The lady in charge of the dining area was also excellent. She hurried the food dishes from the kitchen to the buffet table on many occasions. Without her energy, the buffet would have been lacking many items on several times. We loved visiting Lyons. It was a lovely towm with many areas to walk through. The medieval town of Perouges was also interesting. Vienne was also interesting. The Roman building with the Yoplait cow in front made a beautiful site and we took many pictues. We are going on another Viking Cruise next month. It will be our sixth Viking Cruise and we are looking forward to it. Read Less

The choice of optional and regular excurisions were not as great as other cruises we have been on. Otherwise, the ship was great, service was great and the food was good. It seemed to me that Viking wanted to put a river boat on the Rhone river and then tried to come up with things to show their passengers. Some of the tours were too long. Some were too boring others were very good. The tour that sticks out in my memory is when we went to tour the Papal Palace. That was interesting and about the right length of time. The first day we went to an abbey. That tour was long and then we were given too much free time with noghting to do. It was a long day and we had to drive all the waay back to Lyon. We were beat by the time we returned to the ship. Read Less

This was our second cruise the first being the Elbe. The boat was very well laid out, dining area was well equipped, very good lounge area and first class cabin. The cruise was along the Rhone although not as picturesque as the Elbe it was still a very pleasant way to see the countryside. The staff on board where exceptional and could not do enough for us, the food was first class and the entertainment was very good. Our only issue was the first part of the cruise could not be carried out due to high river levels, all on board excepted that was out of Vikings control, however after this we did not seem to dock at any of the towns on route we seemed to moor in remote area's and where coached to the towns this was fine but it did not give us the option to walk ashore to view area's ourselves unguided. We still really enjoyed the trip and we will use Viking again Read Less

This was a multi-generational vacation, and we considered the location, number of days, ease of traveling to and from, and ship size. Viking River cruises have a great reputation, and this trip certainly lived up to all of our expectations! The ship was the perfect size, and the staff made it easy on all of us to travel, dine, relax and enjoy the entire experience. The suite was beautiful and a comfortable haven for mom, and the cabins for the rest of us had everything we wanted. The dining was fabulous, and every single meal was a fun adventure. What made the cruise exceptional and memorable, though, was the crew and service. Every single person we met went above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable, and their fun-loving nature and professionalism were a delight! The excursions were okay, and we look forward to booking our next Viking River cruise to new locales! Read Less

This was our second cruise with Viking. The first one was Budapest to Amsterdam which we enjoyed so much we decided to book this one. It was a lovely cruise through the French wine region. Our only negative was the fact that too often we were not docked close to towns and often way out in the boonies requiring buses to get into town. I understand this is not Viking's choice but the French government who determines which cruise line docks where each week. All the tours were good. The buses they hire are excellent and walking tours well done. We saw lovely scenery along the way and the stops to enjoy the wineries were excellent. When at the end we didn't dock in Avignon but quite a distance away again in the boonies, Viking hired taxis and buses to take us to final destination. The food was great. The staff all excellent and helpful. Rooms are tiny but have everything you need and all amenities are first class. I would recommend this river cruise from Lyon to Avignon or vice versa. Read Less

Viking simplified every stage of the process from departure from our home city , to arrival at the airport in Lyon, transport to the ship, the voyage, service, room, food and excursions were superb and finally to our departure from Avignon made the whole experience easy and hassle free. It was a nice extension to our 8 day Viking Cruise on the Rolfe through Northern France and ended in Paris with a connection by high speed train to Lyon for the next cruise on the Buri, touring the South of France. The excursions and guides were excellent and unique. The food was outstanding on both cruises as well as the wait staff. The Rolfe experience set the bar high with an excellent experience. where as the Buri's staff were not as engaging or friendly as if they were tired of dealing with their guests and gave very curt responses. When we returned to the ship after an excursion the staff on the Rolfe was always there with a treat and refreshing towels. Where on the Buri if you were not in the first tour groups there was no welcome only a staff member collecting your Excursion cards to make sure you had returned to the ship. We found it amazing that the captain could not speak any English when addressing the guests in the Cruise briefings. The Cruise Director was not organized especially in coordinating the Tours especially making sure all of the the Whisper Boxes were all working prior to the bus departures and had plenty of extras on hand prior to tour departures. This was our 6th river cruise with Viking. So, we have found them to provide excellent cruises. Because I have a particular interest in medieval European history, I chose this tour because it provided an opportunity to see the Abbey at Cluny and the Papal Palace at Avignon. (In addition to being huge, the Abbey exercised nearly as much influence in its time as Rome. The Papal Palace was the home of seven Popes during the so-called "Babylonian Captivity" of the Papacy.) My wife and I found the excursions to both locations to be well-conducted and interesting. The Abbey visit is the only added cost option we chose. The other shore excursions were much as expected with the exception of the Timeless Town of Perouges. Perouges felt too much like a tourist creation. As usual, the food aboard the ship was excellent and the staff attentive. Although Viking includes wine with meals, we opted for the premium wine package and feel this to have been money well-spent. (We're not "wine snobs", but we do enjoy both a better wine and a broader selection.) At the tour's conclusion, we chose to add a couple of nights in Avignon. It's a charming town and the Papal Palace was well-worth a second visit. If you choose to stay, check out the laser light show in the Palace courtyard. The later showing is offered with English narrative on some nights. It's impressive! So, why did I not award the Cruise 5 stars? Because, while uniformly excellent, I did not think it was truly exceptional. (My wife and I are admittedly spoiled and would give this rating only to our Viking Yangtze River cruise several years ago.) And, I admit being annoyed by Viking's payment policy requiring full payment long before the cruise in order to take advantage of their sale prices. Read Less

We had visited northern France before, but never southern France. Friends had told us great praises about the Avignon area and we had relatives living on the southern coast of France, so we wanted to combine the great experience of a river cruise ( we had a great previous two-week cruise experience with Viking) with a visit to a part of France that we had never previously experienced. This cruise exceeded our expectations in almost every regard. River cruise boats have less than 200 passengers, so this is small by cruise standards, but this is just right for river cruising. The staff is very friendly and you get to know the cruise (program) director and many of the other staff personally. The executive chef on this cruise was outstanding. His selection of local specialties was great and the preparations were outstanding. Every evening meal was outstanding. The breakfasts and lunches were also very good. Embarkation was easy and disembarkation was very smooth and organized. Viking includes at least one free shore excursion at every stop. The tours we liked best were the Beaujolais Wine tour, the Lyon city tour, the Tournon steam train, and the Avignon Walk and Popes Palace. We also paid for optional tours of Pont du Gard Aqueduct (outstanding!) and Arles in Van Gogh's Footsteps (also outstanding!) . Although Viking carefully advises which tours require walking and some physical effort, and on most tours, Viking offers a "less demanding" option, some passengers overestimate their physical ability and they don't take the more leisurely tour, this they tend to hold back some groups on these tours. On this cruise we paid for, but were very disappointed in only one tour - to the timeless town of Perouges. There are numerous scenic old walled mountain towns/cities in France, and this is not among the best! Skip this one! Every Viking ship had its piano player who entertains nightly, and we have enjoyed the piano player and his music on this and previous cruises. Viking also brings on board entertainment one to three times a week, and these small entertainment groups are usually very good. The 4 person vocal group on this cruise was very entertaining one evening. Our experiences with Viking River Cruises have been great and we are already planning another river cruise for next year. This was the second cruise my wife and I have taken with Viking, the first one being the Danube 4 years ago and this one certainly matched, if not bettered the first. From the moment you step on board the service from the staff is first class and that standard never slipped throughout the week. One of my major concerns was how I would be treated in respect of my gluten free diet. I need not have worried. After introducing myself to the female maître di and waiters at the first dinner, they recognized me at each meal time and were excellent at providing gluten free bread, specially prepared breakfasts such as French toast and pancakes and overall were just so knowledgeable and keen to get things just right. If you are coeliac you will understand how important it is to have that peace of mind on holiday. The only part of cruising which we couldn't undertake was the first short trip on the Saone river to Macon as the water levels were too high. As it turned out we went by coach to the vineyard travelling through amazing countryside and was probably more scenic than being on the boat. It also meant we spent a little bit longer in Lyon which is a beautiful historic city to explore on foot. The entertainment manager Christine was on top of her game - a real people person with a wicked sense of humour and all the other staff were extremely friendly and efficient. There are a lot of optional excursions on this cruise so you will never be without something to do or you can remain on the boat and chill out as we often did. The only downside of our trip was due to a late flight home, still being on board ship when the next lucky passengers arrived to start their week, we did think about trying to stowaway! All in all I would highly recommend this cruise, obviously try and pick the time of year when the rivers are less likely to be too high (or even too low) which can be difficult but if you are lucky as we were it is a very enjoyable experience. This was my first river cruise, and my travel companion had previously enjoyed a Viking cruise. Our Viking Travel Agent helped us find the best deal that would fit the sort of journey we were looking for. Everything on board fully met my best expectations - indeed, I was very pleasantly surprised to discover my (very comfortable and well appointed) stateroom received attention no less than 3 times per day. The Viking newsletter, daily briefings and announcements assured that being on time for all excursions was effortless. I particularly enjoyed the Silver Spirits package and highly recommend it. We experienced a variety of included and optional shore excursions and was very happy with how everything was geared to making the experience as enjoyable and informative as possible. And the food! Yay for Chef Max! Rarely did I vary from the chef's recommendations, as they were always a delight. At first I was concerned that my travel buddy and I would feel a bit strange at a table with folks we didn't know, but we very quickly made some lovely acquaintances and by the third day were seeking each other out for a lively, completely enjoyable evening - we were, I believe, the last to leave the dining room on more than one occasion. Our regular server, Zuzan, I think is how it was spelled, was so informative and helpful that I fully belive that my enjoyment of my meals and accompanying wine choices were largely due to her advice. My cruise was before the unfortunate accident in September, but having spent time on the sun deck, walking laps or snapping pics of the Heimdal's passage through the locks, I had ample opportunity to observe first hand the undivided attention the captain and crew gave to each lock and bridge. I always felt my safety, and that of all passengers, was in good hands with our Viking crew. My only complaint has nothing to do with the cruise itself. When in the planning stages, I asked about flight booking possibilities for the additional leg I needed (from Bangor, ME to Philadelphia) as I don't live near a hub. I opted to book it myself since the estimated range of price given was more than what I could do myself directly with American. However, and this is a BIG however, because I booked the Bangor - Philadelphia round trip leg myself, it was a SEPERATE itinerary, which meant that I could NOT check my bag through from Bangor to Lyon (and back)...which meant I had to pay $25 for each leg ($50 total) to check my bag since Bangor to Philadelphia round trip is domestic....which ALSO meant I had to retrieve it from baggage claim in Philadelphia, actually LEAVE the airport building, walk 30 minutes to the furthest terminal from where I had landed (landed at terminal F, British Airways was terminal A East), check my bag and hope to get to my gate on time. It was not fun, especially since I had injured my left foot 2 days before departure and American Airlines told me I could expect NO assistance getting my bag from Terminal F to A East because that was outside security AND my flight from Bangor was nearly 2 hours late in arriving in Philadelphia. I would much rather have paid a bit extra for that part of the trip and been able to have it all on the same itinerary Next time (we are working on a possible 2 cruises in 2017) I will know better about how to handle flight booking, but it would have been SO helpful AND anxiety reducing if the booking agent had given me that VERY important bit of information. Bottom line, well done! Read Less

It was the little things that impressed from handing out water as you left for you daily tour to a surprise cocktail when you returned or at lunch. Food was very good with different selections and dining options at most meals. We particularly enjoyed the regional cuisine that was offered daily. Most days we had lunch on the Aquavit Terrace where you could enjoy the outdoor weather. We also appreciated the all-inclusive nature of the cruise. Our last cruise experience had been on a popular American ocean cruise line where everything you wanted to experience had an additional fee attached. The itinerary was very interesting. My husband and I no longer want to drive in foreign countries so a river cruise was perfect for us. Arriving at a new port every day was effortless and exciting. The ratio of staff to passengers was perfect - we are not interested in a large ocean cruise - ocean cruise destinations do not interest us with the possible exception of the Greek Islands. Our cabin included a French Balcony - wall to wall sliding glass doors providing a full view of the river and ports. There were several other areas on the ship where we could relax, get some sun and meet other passengers. Dining - food was excellent and varied - one could opt for a buffet or full .service meal. We met some wonderful people at each meal and conversations were spontaneous and easy. They all seem to love their jobs- even the room stewards. Our rooms were freshen up twice a day which was nice. The ship's decor is very relaxing. We loved the 24 hour specialty coffe and tea- and the homemade cookies! The cruise director Susie was fun and enthusiastic. She had a short and informative briefing each night and was seen taking photos everywhere we went. The food, especially the desserts was amazing. Small portions allowed us to try the appetizer, main course and dessert each night. Breakfast and lunch had an incredible variety of breads, eggs, cereal, fruit, meats and cheese. We were able to eat outside for lunch a few times and this was a great experience. It was pretty hot our first few days and we sat out on the upper deck. A staff member brought ice water and later ice cream to us- a very nice touch. Only bad experience was our trip to the Marseille airport. We were dropped off a long way from the entrance and had to drag our bags a long way over some very rough pavement to get into the airport. The Viking rep offered no explanation for this nor did she come inside the airport to help passengers check in. We have taken two other Viking cruises and there was a rep inside the airport to help out. Some of the more elderly passengers had considerable difficulty with their bags and needed help. Read Less

We were well taken care of in both of these locations as well, touring both on our own and with Viking leadership. We always had a Viking representative close by that had a wealth of local knowledge. Having enjoyed our previous cruise through The Netherlands & Belgium we had high expectations for this cruise which went from Lyon to Arles with many stops along the way. I am happy to say that all our expectations were not only met but greatly exceeded. All of our arrangements were made directly through Viking. Our flight, which had two connections went smoothly. Someone met us at the airport in Lyon and within two hours we were on board the Viking Delling. This Viking River Cruise from Lyon to Avignon was part 2 of Viking's "Frances Finest". Due to a train strike we took a daylong bus ride from Paris to Lyon instead of a two hour train ride. It would have been nice if Viking had included lunch for us, but otherwise it was an acceptable transfer and we arrived safely. The cruise ship Delling is well maintained with wonderful cabins, attentive staff, and delicious food up to Viking's usual high standards. The tour guides for the ports and shore excursions were excellent and very knowledgeable. I was impressed with the number and variety of shore excursions. We took a number of optional ones. They included The Abbey of Cluny, the Town of Perouges, the Pont du Gard Aqueduct, and Les Baux & Carrieres de Lumieres. All were excellent and very informative. The on-board activities and entertainment were very good. We had a full schedule everyday which we enjoyed. We would enthusiastically recommend this cruise. It was our fourth Viking River Cruise and lived up to the excellence we have come to expect from this company. Read Less
