I can not wait to go on another Viking River Cruise, I enjoyed every minute, from the staff, excursions, port of calls, and food to the people we met on board. From the start of our trip in the airport, we felt welcomed and were well taken care of by the Viking Staff. Our cabin was roomy unlike most cruise ships. I was fascinated by the information I learned at each port. My only wish was that I could have taped each tour guide, they were all so unique with their life experiences. I found them all knowledgeable and pleasant. They gave us so much information I never will remember it all. The food choices were exceptional. The staff were wonderful, they were helpful and knowledgeable. Each night we were treated with some form of entertainment that was local to the region. I did not miss a workout facility, I walked more and burned calories each day on the included excursions. They were all very enjoyable. We enhanced our trip with three days in Paris. I was very pleased with the accommodations and the tour there. On the tour I left my camera case and flash on the tour bus, our host at the hotel worked his magic, I really thought it was gone for good since the bus was on its way to some other commitment in another part of France, but by the time we left for the ship, my camera case and flash were recovered and back with me. I couldn't have been more grateful. My husband and I can not wait until our next adventure on board! Read Less

Everything on the boat was excellent. The food, the staff and service were top shelf. We stayed in a Veranda Suite. The tours were average but the scenery was not very interesting while cruising, unlike our previous Viking tour from Budapest to Amsterdam. Every place we stopped was over crowded with tourists. At several stops we had to stand in long lines to see the attraction. It was extremely hot most of the week (this was our fault for choosing mid July). On one tour, after walking around the city we were taken the top of a very high site, by a tram, that overlooked the city and river which was very interesting, but it started raining at the top of the hill. The tram took us about 1/3 of the way back to the boat and dumped us off in pouring rain. Only 1 couple had an umbrella so everybody got 'soaked to the bone' walking back to the boat. On our next cruise we will go either early or late in the season, but definitely on Viking. Read Less

We previously cruised the Rhine with another company. Relatives had done the same river with Viking and highly recommended it. We traveled with them on the Heimdal. For my husband and myself, we had been to Paris more than once and wanted to explore more of France. We did enjoy our Rhine River cruise with another company, but prefer the Viking cruise. Of course, the itinerary was different so a completely fair comparison can't be made, but I will say some of the things that put Viking on top. For one, I would say dinner was better. There were more choices. On our previous cruise, chicken was never an option and it is something that we normally eat a lot of at home. The desserts were better on the Heimdal and the chef who gave a preview of his dinner offerings every night was always so enthusiastic. The entire staff of the Heimdal was great. This continued with the guides on all the port excursions. The ship was large enough to accommodate people on the deck at all times, even for meals (unfortunately, the weather was so hot we never did dine there). One thing I especially have to rave about was our post excursion to Nice. We have done a few tours of various places in Europe and anytime we added an extension, we were on our own. Here we had an included tour and a couple of optional ones. The guide in charge of the extension (I believe his name was Bart, if memory serves me well) actually met us at the airport to insure an easy departure. This has NEVER happened before and was especially great because the computers in the terminal went down before we could check in. Bart spent time with each of the travelers in our group and waited with us until things were up and running again (over an hour later) and we went through security. We will definitely sail with Viking again. My husband doesn't even care what the destination is; he just finds it a very relaxing way to travel. It is and allows us to see the world in a less hectic way. Read Less

It’s hard to describe in words. I was so impressed with the staff and the organization right from the start. The food was incredible, I truly have no complaints. I just wish we could afford to do it more often. This was our first trip. The excursions were well planned and very enjoyable. It was very hot but being met with a lovely aperitif when we arrived back on the ship was a bonus. We met some lovely people on our cruise and never once did it feel crowded. The bar staff were very friendly and accommodating and the on ship programs were both informative and enjoyable. We had so much fun at the dance party. I thought the idea of a buffet and a full menu was wonderful, there was more food than any one person could ever eat!! Our cabin was a French Balcony and I would choose that again. All in all the cruise was an amazing experience. Thank you Viking......we are hooked. Read Less

This cruise was amazing. This was our second cruise with Viking. I love the river cruises because they are small, you can come and go whenever you want to. There is no seasickness on the river, because it is so calm. You dock right in the heart of each destination. The staff and crew are wonderful, and take really good care of you from the moment you arrive until the moment you board your plane back home. It takes all the worry out of traveling. The excursions were so interesting and fun. We took the steam train through the Ardeche Valley which was breathtaking. My favorite trip was to the Lavender fields. I learned how the essential oil is made, through the distillation process and even got to walk through the gorgeous and aromatic Lavender field. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and the speaker phones allow you to hear everything even on a crowded street. The food was wonderful, and I also love the coffee/tea bar with delicious regional pastries .The night time entertainment was fun and allows you to meet people from all over. I love the trivia nights. I would not travel with anyone else any more. Viking has spoiled us. We are in the process of planning our next cruise to China. Read Less

Wanted to try something different for a vacation and several friends recommended Viking River Cruises. It was all that we expected and more! Excellent cabin, food, service, excursions, etc. Our transfers between airports and the ship were excellent. Our cabin was large, comfortable, and included many amenities that we have never received on prior trips - fresh fruit and cookies every day, wine, soft drinks, and champagne in our fridge. Plenty of comfortable seating, not only in the cabin, but on the top deck, the dining room, the library, etc. The waitstaff all spoke perfect English and were extremely attentive. It was nice to be able to sit wherever and with whomever we wanted at the meals. The smaller number of travelers made it easier to get to meet almost everyone on the ship. The food was incomparable! Never had something I didn't like, and I was able to try a variety of foods that were new to me. This will definitely not be our last Viking River Cruise! Read Less

Love the south of France! Loved my previous Viking cruises on the Rhine and Danube! My husband had never visited this part of the world before. Everything was perfect: our cabin with its veranda, the food, the immaculate state of everything! The crew was incredible! Loved, love, loved this cruise! The itinerary was well-chosen, and the shore excursions excellent. Got to see many small towns I'd never known about! My only criticism is that I would have liked to spend more time sailing - not just lying in the port of Lyon. That is what is making us hesitant about some other cruises we're thinking of: too much time in Paris. Or Moscow/St. Petersburg or Beijing/Shanghai. The point of a river cruise s to spend time sailing on rivers, no? That said, everything was always taken care of, the planning was extraordinary. The food was always fantastic. But, I repeat - I cannot praise the wonderful crew enough! Read Less

We chose this cruise expecting an experience commensurate with TV and brochure hype. Big mistake. Instead we experienced tandem docking with no river views. We expected leisurely dinners with regional French cuisine. Big mistake, the dining experience was a big disappointment and food quality was not so good. The food service at dinner was rushed and noisy. My wife and I have been on more than 30 trips on many cruise lines and for the cost of this trip we expected much more. The hotel service was very nice and the cabin adequate. The shore excursions terrific and guides were very knowledgeable. Our post cruise hotel stay in Paris was excellent which included free tours. I purchased tickets on line for a private tour of the Louvre which was also a memorable experience. The entertainment on board was non existent unless you are a drinker. We did NOT have a romantic river view cruise through southern France. Read Less

We wanted a relaxing cruise after two weeks of sight-seeing ihn Spain. Viking gave us many options; each day we were on a walking tour of the city we docked at, or a bus tour of the region. In the afternoon they offered other tours for an added fee. We enjoyed the small size of the ship, with fewer than 200 guests. One dinner seating at any table we chose, so we met most of the other guests. Service was impeccable; staff quickly learned our preferences. House wine was free with meals. As we were in Provence, the meals were regional specialties. Evening entertainment was limited: a dance performance, some singing performers. Other nights were game nights. It was a low-key, relaxing experience. I was impressed with the attention to detaIl-the timing of meals related to the times of tours, tour guides were all knowledgeable. On our last day, the plan to get us to the airport was extremely well orgainzed and executed-we had to leave the ship at about 3 a.m., but breakfast was available prior to boarding the bus! Read Less

This was a special trip for our 50th wedding anniversary as we had never been on a cruise before. Ship was lovely crew were very friendly. Food was not so good the buffet was the best. We personally felt out numbered as 98percent Americans , we asked before we booked if they had small tables but this was not the case and not in our comfort zone. River was not the prettiest lots of industrial sites along the river. It is very geared up for the American market not British . Lots of thing did not come up to our expectations from Viking as we were travelling by train. They did not seem to recognise this on many occasions . We did not get to see Arles which was something we would have liked as went up and back to Avignon and had 4 hour coach trip on to Nice, which was not mentioned. We would not choose to cruise again after this experience . Read Less

South of France in May! What could be more beautiful? But the Viking Buri, its staff and director made it a stunning vacation! From the excursions to the food to the fabulous directorship, this particular cruise was the best! The wine education was extensive on the tour, and the accommodations provided for transportation were excellent. The evening tour was fun and different. We made life-long friends even though we had no intention of much socializing...we needed a break from our crazy lives...but the folks we met were just too much fun! Since then, we have already visited some in NY! The ship had all we needed (except for a fitness room, which would have been very welcomed). The dining staff became like family, while still keeping a very professional stance. The evening entertainment was lots of fun, and not too night-clubby as others have been. The front desk staff assisted us in making reservations and appointments in the cities we visited, from restaurants to nail salon. They also recommended places to go, which was quite helpful. The excursions were excellent, and we didn't even add any additional to our trip. Read Less

The large cruise ships had become too crowded, impersonal and not very relaxing. The cabin was immaculate and roomy. We enjoyed having a balcony on which to relax between meals, tours or with a glass of wine after dinner. The staff could not have been more accommodating and pleasant. The tours were excellent. We are history buffs as well as wine lovers. Both interests were peaked on our tours. And the guides were wonderful. The entertainment on board was fun; informative and well done. This cruise answered all our wants and needs. We have since sung Viking ‘s praises to everyone we know who is considering a cruise. This is truly the only way to go and we are already considering our next Viking cruise in Portugal next year. Read Less

The ship and crew were fabulous. We had a wondeful cruise but it was way too sedentary for us. We like to exercise which there wasn’t any and we love to see entertainment which there was very little, if any. The food was good but really nothing to write home about. If you love excursions though this is what it is all about. We had cooking classes, saw history that was made over 2000 years ago. They offered many free excursions but we upgraded and did a lot that cost an additional fee. They were the ones that we enjoyed the most. Seeing the countryside, wine tasting in the basement of a castle. Watching a dog find truffles, goat farmers make goat cheese, exploring the many foods that were made by top notch bakers, chocolatiers, cheese makers and sausage makers was what made the trip. We also enjoyed the many people that we met on the ship. They were wonderful and the many stories they had made it great. Not enough activity for me but I do think I will try one of their ocean cruises next. Read Less

The Viking staff was there for you from the time you land at the airport until they put you on the plane to go home....felt very safe and personally cared for. The meal choices in the dining room were fun and the food was awesome....loved the personal service each meal....the outdoor terrace Aquavit was perfect for a sunny lunch or breakfast and a great spot to lounge in while sailing. Loved the daily information provided each evening detailing the next days activities and even included a city map of the places each stop so we could break off on our own to visit the markets or cafes and really experience the area casually at our own pace when appropriate and when time permitted. I would not recommend for those that are very active non readers. Or if you fall into the non reader category travel with friends who like to play cards or games. I absolutely loved the tours and loved meeting all the wonderful people from different countries that you travel with. Being an avid exerciser who does is on the go most of the time, it was a little laid back for me. There was no exercise facilities along with very little onboard activity. The food and drink were very good and very available. We had upgraded to a 2 room suite so it was very nice but the television had very little English speaking channels. (Mainly news and only one Australian western show) I will still try another Viking cruise but it will be a larger more active ship with a spa and exercise facility because of the tours, food and service. I have done another Viking River cruise a few years ago and was quite satisfied so chose Viking to do another one. I have a garlic intolerance/allergy which was very well addressed last cruise but not so this time. With being a French river cruise, I was hoping for a French chef but this chef was from Poland and he put garlic in almost everything so my choices were very limited and in fact on the French Buffet night I had bread and cheese and went to my cabin. The shore excursions were very well organized and I was happy with all but one of our tour guides and made a point of letting the desk ladies know they were excellent. I believe positive feed back is as important as negative. Our cabin, a French balcony was very small, like 135 sq. Feet which I think included the bathroom. I wondered if a heavy person could turn around or get into the shower but the heated floor was lovely. My friend and I had twin beds, mine up against the wall, hers up against the window, a 2 foot space between the beds. We had to take turns getting from one place to the other in the cabin. It was nice to open the large floor to ceiling door and the A/C automatically turns off when the door opens which was good, and we had a nice breeze while sitting on our beds admiring the scenery floating past. Unfortunately we were to late returning from our Lyon shore excursion to enjoy the silk screening demonstration, perhaps this could be better planned. We had one evening shore excursion which many said they would have preferred to see in the daylight. Would I book another Viking river cruise? The jury is still out on that one! Read Less

Last year we reported a disappointing Duoro Cruise on Viking. Because we were offered a credit towards a future cruise, we decided to give Viking a chance to redeem themselves. This cruise, overall, was excellent. We will almost certainly cruise with Viking again in the future. As far as I am concerned, there are two major factors which influence my enjoyment of cruise, the attitude of the crew and the places visited. This cruise ticked both boxes for me. Airport transfer, both on embarkation day and disembarkation day, fell short what I have come to expect. Both ends involved length walks, with luggage to and from the parking place for the shuttle. No assistance with luggage was offered or available. Embarkation exceeded expectations. We arrived mid-morning with the prospect of waiting until 3pm to get access to our cabin. In fact, the cabin was ready by 11:30am. The crew on board was outstanding and contributed greatly to the overall experience. The program director, Nikolas, was the best we have ever experienced. He appeared totally unruffled despite lots of problems caused by strikes by Air France, SNCF and Lufthansa. He is a natural communicator. His briefings were informative and included just the right amount of humour. He also greeted every single passenger by name, which really made us feel welcome on board. The ship was in good condition and kept very clean. Food: Good variety, good quality, attractively served. Drink: We took the Silver Spirits package. Unlike on some ocean cruises, getting value out of the package does not require excessive drinking. One cocktail before dinner, one glass of premium wine with lunch and dinner and one nightcap would have cost more than the package. Waiter service: Mostly excellent. Seemed to be a little overworked at times. Destinations: Every single destination was interesting and the local guides used were outstanding. Downsides: Because river levels were very high, the sun deck was closed for almost the whole period that the ship was moving. We were docked against other ships for 5 nights out of 7. TV: Don't sail on Viking for the TV entertainment. For long periods several of the channels were unavailable and all of the Sky channels were in German. If you were expecting premier league football, you will have to settle for handball. Viking do need to sort out the guest survey we were asked to complete at the end of the cruise. We were asked to rate everything on a scale of Did not meet expectations - Met expectations - Exceeded expectations - Far exceeded expectations. Our cruise director helped us "interpret" these to mean Bad - fair - good - excellent. I object to this. As someone who has cruised Viking before, my expectations were high. Most of them were met and in some cases exceeded, which means that this was a great cruise. However, I don't want Viking to use my feedback in advertising to state that they far exceeded my expectations, which they didn't. Read Less

The excursions we're great and the tour guides were very informative and nice I recommend not taking every extra excursion so as not to feel too scheduled. Wandering around on your own in each location after your morning excursion is best The food was fantastic! We met nice people that we will remain friends with. During our trip, the water level on the Rhone was high so we were rarely able to sit on the upper deck due to all the bridges that we passed under. We ended up playing poker in the lounge during the days when we were moving down the river. Spend as much free time wandering around Lyon and Avignon as possible! They are both beautiful in very different ways. If you like churches, you will love this cruise. Read Less

End of season deal allowed us to experience a taste of Europe, while gaining our first experience of river cruising. From the cruise director, captain through the crew everybody went out of their way to ensure the best cruise experience ever. The shore excursions were very informative with enough time to explore on your own before returning to the boat. Learning about the local culture, food, and activities was very enlightening. The intimate environment of a couple of hundred passengers meant you got to know or recognize everyone very quickly. The meals were excellent with an offering of the local cuisine of the country we were visiting, and the open dining allowed for more opportunity to mingle and get to know a variety of shipmates. The cabins were very comfortable and functional, although we basically only slept and changed in the room. I've always wanted to visit Provence, so a river trip from Lyon to Arles seemed like a good way to go.The Viking staff were great and really took care you, from arrival in Lyon to the flight out from Marseille. We ate all meals on board. Before we left we hoped to have at least some lunch in a local town, and we could have I guess, but the excursions were frequent and the food on the boat was excellent. Oh wait! In Carmargue we had lunch at a farm restaurant that was very popular, and it was wonderful! The stateroom was completely functional and comfortable. It was small but it never bothered us. The design was very modern Scandinavian but it just worked so well! The ship was clean and well designed. All passengers could eat at the same time in the dining area. The lounge was comfortable to sit in. We sailed on the last week of the season, so it was cool but fine. One day we sat in the bow lounge outdoors and just watched the countryside go by.... The activities were the excursions as I mentioned, and all we well planned, worth doing, and fun. The best two were Train de l'Ardèche and the day trip to Arles and Camargue. Read Less

We had been to Paris three times, but we wanted to see Provence, and this trip provided that for us. We took a pre-cruise extension in Paris and Dijon/Beaune, which was absolutely delightful. Our tour director (Lot?) was outstanding - funny, knowledgeable and helpful, and we saw fantastic things. Markets and vineyards and wineries - it was magnificent. Then we boarded our ship in Lyon and had a day and a half there to explore this fabulous old city. We had a chance to buy their beautiful silks and chocolates and other goods, and visit their glorious old buikdings snd churches. The Old Town is really fun to walk and shop. The seven-day river cruise was so delightful. Each port was interesting and OLD and so much fun. Our favorites were Arles and Avignon, places we had heard of our, entire lives. I know this sounds trite, but it was just a magical itinerary. The ship itself was as lovely as all the longships - this was the second one we had been on. Our Cruise Director, a very young man from Belgium, was WONDERFUL! Hilarious and entertaining, and between him and the head of hotel, they kept everyone in stitches. We had a ball. And the food was fantastic! This was our fourth Viking river cruise. We have also gone on a Viking ocean cruise and are scheduled for another. We rave about Viking to anyone who will listen.
