Wanted to visit Provence and this was the perfect way to do it. Staying right the heart of cities like Lyon and Avignon allows scope for independent sight seeing. As a past customer I had high expectations of the service and food and I was not disappointed. Such a varied itinerary with cities and rural communities. Some of the Roman remains were fascinating, especially the Pont du Gard Aquaduct. Our optional excursion to the Camargue was very interesting and I enjoyed getting so close to the flamingos. The facilities on board are excellent and the service always feels personalised. The attention to detail, such as handing out warm hand towels to refresh you on return to the boat from an excursion are much appreciated. The pick up and return to the airport were well handled. The extension in Nice added a final flourish and the Viking representatives at the hotel were very helpful in recommending places to eat and where to visit. Read Less

We had always wanted to go on a River Cruise and friends of ours recommended the Lyon to Avignon cruise so we booked it. From the moment we arrived on the ship to the time we left for home we were impressed with the amenities and the hospitality of the ship's crew. We arrived early on the first day having taken an early flight from LHR to Lyon and since we were the only ones on our flight we had the pleasure of getting a private car from the airport to the ship. Since we arrived early (at about 10am), our room was not ready so we checked our luggage with the front desk and had a nice chat with a couple who were getting ready to depart. I thought we were going to have to wait until 3pm, but we were pleasantly surprised that our room was ready at about 11am! We got a short tour of the room and after we unpacked it was time for lunch. The included excursions were good for the most part and for the majority of our time we had good weather. It was only the last full day when we had rain. We did two of the optional tours ("Beaujolais and Truffles" and "the Flavors of Provence") and would recommend them highly. Overall, we would recommend this cruise to others. I would have liked to spend more time in Avignon, but now that I have been to that part of France I would probably go back to Lyon and Avignon. Read Less

I chose Viking because of the 2-room veranda suite. I compared the suites from all other river cruise lines and Viking had everything I wanted: my own personal veranda, spacious rooms, wonderful shower. It was my first river cruise and I enjoyed everything that Viking could provide. It was my first trip to France so I didn't know what to expect in terms of the river vistas, which were a bit underwhelming, and I was taken aback by the nuclear reactors along the river. But that is just a fact of life in France--nothing that Viking can control. The amenities on board were superb--food, drink, service and entertainment. I don't drink anything alcoholic, but my husband assured me that all the complementary and optional wine choices were first rate. All the food choices were marvelous. I normally avoid sweets, but the desserts could not be resisted. Merci beaucoup Viking Buri. Read Less

Wanted a quiet relaxing experience, but not boring. the ship, crew, food, programs made it entertaining and stimulating while the scenery relaxed you and the sites immersed you and taught you history. Overall a well rounded experience. Everything went smoothly and appreciated the staff caring for one guest at a time, even in the group excursions. The facilities were comfortable and cruising was gentle. only problem was when another ship would park next to ours and we would lose the view and some privacy. The food was very good, good variety and reflected the region and country. The entertainment completed well the day experience. The included shore excursions were very didactic and made interesting by the tour guides. They were appropriate and we did not go on any optional tours. We had not been to that area of France previously and were pleased with the choice as well as with the time of year. The Spanish performers were great. Read Less

The staff and the ship were wonderful. So clean and bright. The staff helpful and cheerful did everything to make it a memorable and relaxing trip. The food was well thought out and delicious. The excursions, on and off the ship went seamlessly. No hiccups. They seem to have planned everything so it would be so. The extra trips we paid for were well worth the money and again well planned and entertaining. We had time at different ports to explore on our own or just relax in the sparkling cabins. They were so clean and tastefully decorated. All in all it was a magnificent trip so well worth the effort and money. I plan on going on another Viking trip very soon. I am retired and want to travel and these cruises are perfect to see places and relax too. The work of travel is taken over by the staff so all you have to do is enjoy yourself. They even had several activities planned on board. I really liked the historical talk on the French Resistance. And of course there was music, dancing, stimulating conversation (with other passengers from other countries).and great food all the time great food and drink. Read Less

I can not wait to go on another Viking River Cruise, I enjoyed every minute, from the staff, excursions, port of calls, and food to the people we met on board. From the start of our trip in the airport, we felt welcomed and were well taken care of by the Viking Staff. Our cabin was roomy unlike most cruise ships. I was fascinated by the information I learned at each port. My only wish was that I could have taped each tour guide, they were all so unique with their life experiences. I found them all knowledgeable and pleasant. They gave us so much information I never will remember it all. The food choices were exceptional. The staff were wonderful, they were helpful and knowledgeable. Each night we were treated with some form of entertainment that was local to the region. I did not miss a workout facility, I walked more and burned calories each day on the included excursions. They were all very enjoyable. We enhanced our trip with three days in Paris. I was very pleased with the accommodations and the tour there. On the tour I left my camera case and flash on the tour bus, our host at the hotel worked his magic, I really thought it was gone for good since the bus was on its way to some other commitment in another part of France, but by the time we left for the ship, my camera case and flash were recovered and back with me. I couldn't have been more grateful. My husband and I can not wait until our next adventure on board! Read Less

This cruise was amazing. This was our second cruise with Viking. I love the river cruises because they are small, you can come and go whenever you want to. There is no seasickness on the river, because it is so calm. You dock right in the heart of each destination. The staff and crew are wonderful, and take really good care of you from the moment you arrive until the moment you board your plane back home. It takes all the worry out of traveling. The excursions were so interesting and fun. We took the steam train through the Ardeche Valley which was breathtaking. My favorite trip was to the Lavender fields. I learned how the essential oil is made, through the distillation process and even got to walk through the gorgeous and aromatic Lavender field. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and the speaker phones allow you to hear everything even on a crowded street. The food was wonderful, and I also love the coffee/tea bar with delicious regional pastries .The night time entertainment was fun and allows you to meet people from all over. I love the trivia nights. I would not travel with anyone else any more. Viking has spoiled us. We are in the process of planning our next cruise to China. Read Less

South of France in May! What could be more beautiful? But the Viking Buri, its staff and director made it a stunning vacation! From the excursions to the food to the fabulous directorship, this particular cruise was the best! The wine education was extensive on the tour, and the accommodations provided for transportation were excellent. The evening tour was fun and different. We made life-long friends even though we had no intention of much socializing...we needed a break from our crazy lives...but the folks we met were just too much fun! Since then, we have already visited some in NY! The ship had all we needed (except for a fitness room, which would have been very welcomed). The dining staff became like family, while still keeping a very professional stance. The evening entertainment was lots of fun, and not too night-clubby as others have been. The front desk staff assisted us in making reservations and appointments in the cities we visited, from restaurants to nail salon. They also recommended places to go, which was quite helpful. The excursions were excellent, and we didn't even add any additional to our trip. Read Less

The ship and crew were fabulous. We had a wondeful cruise but it was way too sedentary for us. We like to exercise which there wasn’t any and we love to see entertainment which there was very little, if any. The food was good but really nothing to write home about. If you love excursions though this is what it is all about. We had cooking classes, saw history that was made over 2000 years ago. They offered many free excursions but we upgraded and did a lot that cost an additional fee. They were the ones that we enjoyed the most. Seeing the countryside, wine tasting in the basement of a castle. Watching a dog find truffles, goat farmers make goat cheese, exploring the many foods that were made by top notch bakers, chocolatiers, cheese makers and sausage makers was what made the trip. We also enjoyed the many people that we met on the ship. They were wonderful and the many stories they had made it great. Not enough activity for me but I do think I will try one of their ocean cruises next. Read Less

The Viking cruise is one that I would highly recommend for those that love history, tours, new experiences, relaxing and great company. I would not recommend for those that are very active non readers. Or if you fall into the non reader category travel with friends who like to play cards or games. I absolutely loved the tours and loved meeting all the wonderful people from different countries that you travel with. Being an avid exerciser who does is on the go most of the time, it was a little laid back for me. There was no exercise facilities along with very little onboard activity. The food and drink were very good and very available. We had upgraded to a 2 room suite so it was very nice but the television had very little English speaking channels. (Mainly news and only one Australian western show) I will still try another Viking cruise but it will be a larger more active ship with a spa and exercise facility because of the tours, food and service. The availability fit our personal schedule. Travel to meet the ship was comfortable and no problem. Viking arranged our airline connections, then met us at the embarkation city and took us by bus the relatively short distance to the ship. They even handled our luggage from the bus to our cabin. We very much enjoyed the open seating arrangement at meals that meant we could meet many different people. My wife and I are in our early 70s, and it was easy to meet so many others who were approximately our age. We especially liked the range of people on the trip, from vacationers to retirees. The walking tours were excellent and informative. The guides were all top-notch and had wonderful senses of humor. The preview of next day's activities each evening was very informative and well thought out. Overall, the ship was very comfortable and the crew was excellent. We had been to Paris three times, but we wanted to see Provence, and this trip provided that for us. We took a pre-cruise extension in Paris and Dijon/Beaune, which was absolutely delightful. Our tour director (Lot?) was outstanding - funny, knowledgeable and helpful, and we saw fantastic things. Markets and vineyards and wineries - it was magnificent. Then we boarded our ship in Lyon and had a day and a half there to explore this fabulous old city. We had a chance to buy their beautiful silks and chocolates and other goods, and visit their glorious old buikdings snd churches. The Old Town is really fun to walk and shop. The seven-day river cruise was so delightful. Each port was interesting and OLD and so much fun. Our favorites were Arles and Avignon, places we had heard of our, entire lives. I know this sounds trite, but it was just a magical itinerary. The ship itself was as lovely as all the longships - this was the second one we had been on. Our Cruise Director, a very young man from Belgium, was WONDERFUL! Hilarious and entertaining, and between him and the head of hotel, they kept everyone in stitches. We had a ball. And the food was fantastic! This was our fourth Viking river cruise. We have also gone on a Viking ocean cruise and are scheduled for another. We rave about Viking to anyone who will listen. We selected this tour to be certain that we saw as much of France as possible, while still traveling by river boat, rather than from hotel to hotel. We had seen highlights of Paris and Dijon/Beaune on TV and were very pleased to be able to see the areas in person, along with wineries and the area of Provence. Viking had included so much of what we hoped to see in this tour! Viking staff was so efficient, in every area, from cabin service to embarkation/departure to dining and bar service---we could not have been more pleased! The ship itself was beautiful; our cabin was comfortable; food was excellent and varied; wines selected by the staff for lunch and dinner were all very good. The pace of the tour was perfect for us--we never felt rushed, yet did not have time to be bored! We participated in every one of the daily tours, and were happy that we did so! The tours were all focused on history/culture, and never "pushed" participants into specific merchants to make purchases, as some other tours seem to do. Our guide for the trip, Lot, was absolutely wonderful--provided special "treats" at various spots on the tours, and was personable and extremely helpful with any special requests made of him. We particularly enjoyed sitting on our veranda in early morning and late evening, having coffee or wine (the "Silver Spirits" beverage package worked well for us, as we enjoyed selecting a bottle of wine each day, with the help of the bartender, to have while sitting on our veranda in the evening; we never repeated a wine during the entire trip!). We chose to spend the two days pre-cruise in Paris, and being able to experience the city on our own (after the introduction tour) was perfect! One of the highlights of our trip was a private evening tour of Paris in an open-topped Citroen with a very personable driver--truly a treat! My husband and I agreed that there was nothing that Viking could have done better--we were 100% pleased with our experience, and could certainly understand why so many of our fellow travelers had cruised with Viking 5 to 12 times previously! It was a little disappointing that the cruise itinerary was changed and we spent three days berthed in Lyon, not my idea of a cruise... The berthing locations were very good in that we were in the town centres and there was no need to go on organised tours if we didn't want to. All organised tours started at 0900hrs at the latest so be prepared for an early breakfast if participating. The facilities and crew were first class. The crew were very friendly and the restaurant staff soon learnt our individual preferences. As other reviewers have noted there was a smell of sewage in the corridor for a couple of days - not good. All the fittings and fixtures were top quality. We didn't go on any non-included tours but the included ones were well organised. Would be quite happy to cruise with Viking again as the whole experience from airport back to airport went smoothly. Read Less

Out of all of our VIKING RIVER BOAT Cruises, this was by all counts, the worst. The staff seemed tired and not very friendly, ship had a bad odor, it must be needing a re-do, the Wifi was terrible. All of our other long ships have been new and beautiful. The BURI must be a much older ship. It had a sewer problem all week, nasty smell all over the ship. Dining room staff were very slow to take orders & get the food out. The PA system on the ship didn't work for the first 3 days, so no announcements were announced. The wifi system was terrible, all the other ships have had excellent wifi. I would recommend VIKING takes a good look at this ship and make some much needed improvements, the food was mediocre. They offered a night time walking tour, we did not go, but 2 ladies fell and were hurt quite badly. They had no flash lights to walk with, one lady broke her glasses, and hurt her shoulder and face and had multiple bruises, the other lady was taken to the hospital and needed a leg brace when she was returned to the ship, she alo was quite badly hurt. I would suggest they discontinue this night tour. We have 2 more Viking cruises coming up in 2018, hope the ships are better maintained than the BURI. We are booked on their RHINE GET AWAY cruise & the MAGNIFICENT MEKONG, an update to our cabin from VIKING would be very nice, if possible! Read Less

This was out first river cruise, after several ocean cruises previously (Seabourn, HAL, Celebrity, Cunard). We selected this particular cruise because it synched up with business travel and included Avignon as a port of call. Talk about hot! 95+ every day and when we embarked, the AC was not working. Once repaired, our cabin remained comfortable. However, whenever the Lounge and Dining room were occupied for group events (read dinner), the AC could not keep up and the room became very uncomfortable. With less heat, this would not be a problem. The boat is in excellent shape and very pleasing to the eye. The crew was exceptional. The excursions (included and optional) were extremely well organized and the fellow passengers were nearly always on time (if that were always the case....). We had one technical issue with a steam train excursion (train ahead of us had engine troubles and our train was delayed, no fault of Viking) and the Viking team brought in the coaches and returned us to the boat on time. Well done Viking! The food was good, not exceptional. The dining service was well above average and the staff friendly. The public spaces were constrained by the limitations of a river boat, so if you want public space variety, stick with ocean cruising. The on board entertainer was average at best, with one act brought on board below average and another exceptional. The cabin is as you would expect, tight on a river boat. The bathroom was also small by ocean cruise standards, but well laid out and very functional. If you set your expectations correctly, you will be very pleased. At age 60, we were perhaps the youngest on board except for a family group with 20 somethings included. Many of the fellow travels were spry, but several were not. The energy level was low based on this demographic and is the only reason we would not hurry back to Viking River Cruising. We will likely return once our energy level matches the demographic served. River cruising is nice (in cooler weather) and perfect for many. It does not match our current style. Perhaps in a decade we will return to the rivers. Read Less

Having enjoyed previous river cruises with Viking and having decided that 2 weeks was too long this seemed an excellent opportunity to be in France without the bother, but somehow it failed to press our buttons. We weren't helped by the very high temperatures that made sitting on deck and watching the world go by an option and as most of the sailing was at night we were denied that pleasure. The morning expeditions were fine but going ashore in the afternoons was really demanding. The boat was frequently moored at inconvenient stations and we wondered if this too was to do with costs. We couldn't escape the feeling that Viking were cutting corners. The boat felt understaffed (there was never anyone a the Concierge desk) and the whole day excursions were hugely expensive at almost £200 per person per trip. The food seemed to be less exciting than we recall from last year although some of the staff, particularly the programme director and some of the waiters worked extremely hard to look after us. Given French patisserie the biscuits at the drinks station left much to be desired. So did it reach expectations? Compared to previous cruises, sadly no. We're fairly gregarious but this time often felt excluded by the many groups in the dining room. We love river cruising and have more to do but we will widen our search and perhaps look for better value for money. Read Less

As a first-time solo traveler, I had heard that a Viking river cruise might be the best way to reclaim the pleasures of travel. My expectations were exceeded! I love France, so I decided on the Lyon-Avignon cruise with a three-day pre-cruise extension in Paris. Most of my Paris time was on my own (my 4th visit), and it was a perfect way to get over jet lag before boarding the Buri. The ship was impeccably clean and beautiful, my stateroom was comfortable, the staff was beyond awesome, and the food divine! I tried frog and escargot for the first time! The best part for me, as an older-ish woman traveling alone and not sure what to expect from the social scene, was meeting some wonderful, interesting people. I have even stayed in touch with some of them. Every day included a tour, some of which were excellent, some less than excellent, usually due to difficulties with the AudioVox listening system, or just too many people in the group. In my experience, the special tours (at extra cost) were well worth it. Having fewer people and often a narrower-focus were well worth the extra cost. Bottom line: I enjoyed this cruise so much, that I am going again! This time with two friends who, after listening to me rave about the experience with Viking, decided they wanted to try it too! Our fifth Viking Cruise and we were not disappointed. Embarkation in Lyon and disembarkation in Avignon went as smoothly as in the past. The Longship and our cabin were clean, comfortable, beautifully designed with no wasted space, excellent natural and artificial lighting and very functional (although you cannot connect your i-Pod into the cabin's sound system). The entertainment and cultural programs were very good (including the on-board piano player "Blondie") and were generally provided by local artisans and talent. The included daily excursions were interesting and informative with local guides that were impressive. We also took the optional chief's cooking class in Avignon that turned out to be more fun than I expected courtesy of my wife. As always the service was excellent and it was the opinion of my wife, myself and our fellow passengers that we spoke to that there has never been a bad meal served on a Viking River vessel. (This cruise being no exception - Chateaubriand, Escargot and Creme Brulee.) We have taken 3 ocean cruises (non-Viking) and 3 land cruises (each of the 6 were enjoyed) but the odds are that our next adventure will be another Viking cruise. Read Less

We took the Lyon/Provence river cruise, with the 3-day post-extension in Nice. From the very beginning, this was a marvelous experience. We did get a chance to explore some of Lyon after checking in at the Viking Buri and unpacking. As was the case in our Grand European cruise in October, 2015, embarkation and disembarkation were as smooth as one could expect. The Viking staff is extremely helpful and courteous; they helped us get settled on day 1 and were there every step of the way through the end of the cruise. Our ship's tour director, Mia, was more than perfect for the job. She took a deep interest in everyone on the ship and was very congenial as well as helpful and well-organized. And her staff was amazing as well! The ship and our cabin were immaculate; the staff worked very hard to make this an almost fairy-tale experience --- we felt like we were a king and a queen! The cabin (we had a French balcony) was well laid out and very roomy and comfy. The food was unbelievably good! The chef met with us each evening before dinner to explain our choices and to make his recommendations, all of which were perfect! The wait staff was very attentive and knew our wine preferences by the second day. All the entertainment and activities on the cruise were well planned, and helped us to make decisions about what we might do in our spare time the next day. There were also great local cultural experiences --- musicians, artisans, singers. Each port provided us with at least one included shore excursion and several other choices after the included excursions --- additional cultural things to experience, local foods to try, and many hidden treasures. As I said earlier, the staff on the ship, top to bottom, went out of their way to make this an unforgettable, top-notch experience! Cabins were cleaned so often that I could not have found a speck of dirt or lint if I had tried. It was almost an "anything you want, I'll get it for you" atmosphere --- I almost felt guilty if I did something for myself. We were so pampered by the staff that we didn't want to go home to have to take care of ourselves!!! There were no children on our cruise; probably the average age of the people on the cruise was about mid-60's. We met many very nice people with whom we have maintained contact, both from the cruise in 2015 and in 2016. We are definitely going to go with Viking again; they seem to be the standard bearers in the industry! Read Less

This cruise was a great disappointment. We only sailed 3 out of 7 days! The first delay was because of river conditions. No other explanation. We were bused to see the sites. The next delay was because the lock operators were on strike. Not Vikings fault and it only meant a delay of 3-4 hours. The next delay was amazing. Many passengers had gone on an excursion. We were to meet them downriver at our next destination. I thought the boat was going very fast. Some of the passengers were watching out the window and saw the boat go straight into the bank! One passenger was knocked off her feet, but luckily was not hurt. The bow was covered in broken trees. The glass around the bow was broken. The captain was able to get the boat off the bank after 20" of going back and forth in reverse. We went back to Avignon to be inspected by a team from Basil. There we stayed. This accident was referred to as "the incident". Our compensation for this was free drinks before and after dinner. Also..the captain was there to say goodbye the next day! Read Less

This was a cruise tour and our first. Three days in France and two in Dijon. The land part was excellent, with great guides and tour director. The Paris hotel was good and Dijon ok. I cannot say enough about the staff on the Buri. I know that they work long hours for low wages, but they were exceptional. The chef was a wonderful man and we discussed many recipes. For reasons that we were never told, the ship ran aground while sailing. There were only about 20 passengers on board and the staff handled everything professionally. The internet however was atrocious. Viking needs to spend money to upgrade. We were bused once because the water level was low. They acted as if it was a rare occurrence, but it's known that this is a regular thing. They just don't bother telling you. For the price we paid, the rooms were very small. We also spent more time docked than cruising. Our suite was on the water side, otherwise we couldn't have opened our curtains or sit in the verandah. This was a Burgundy and Provence wine cruise. The included wineries chosen were mediocre and not enough. The better winery was optional, with a price tag. Including tips would be beneficial as there was a great discrepancy in everyone's dollar amounts. Viking doesn't give enough of a bang for the money it charges and we won't be taking another cruise, unless corporate makes changes. I would like to reiterate that all the staff is excellent. Viking arranged for a high speed train to take us to Lyon where boarding the ship was a breeze. The staff was very accommodating and the food was excellently prepared and delicious. We sailed that night and each day was at a different city/ town along the river. The guides were very knowledgeable and it was so easy to follow along with the head sets provided each person. The ship had entertainment at night that enhanced the experience. One night we took a tour of a town we were stopped at and went to the top of a hill to see the view by night. It was magical. Overall it was a wonderful and charming excursion that we would recommend to other cruisers. Read Less

It was a nice extension to our 8 day Viking Cruise on the Rolfe through Northern France and ended in Paris with a connection by high speed train to Lyon for the next cruise on the Buri, touring the South of France. The excursions and guides were excellent and unique. The food was outstanding on both cruises as well as the wait staff. The Rolfe experience set the bar high with an excellent experience. where as the Buri's staff were not as engaging or friendly as if they were tired of dealing with their guests and gave very curt responses. When we returned to the ship after an excursion the staff on the Rolfe was always there with a treat and refreshing towels. Where on the Buri if you were not in the first tour groups there was no welcome only a staff member collecting your Excursion cards to make sure you had returned to the ship. We found it amazing that the captain could not speak any English when addressing the guests in the Cruise briefings. The Cruise Director was not organized especially in coordinating the Tours especially making sure all of the the Whisper Boxes were all working prior to the bus departures and had plenty of extras on hand prior to tour departures. This was our 5th Viking Cruise and Viking overall does an outstanding job!!!! Read Less
