Holiday of a lifetime planned for early in our retirement. Negatives - health and safety issues. 1) We question the practice of the same member of staff responsible for cleaning the cabin also being responsible for bringing coffee/milk new cups etc to the stateroom.i.e. the steward comes straight from cleaning the bathroom/toilet to delivering new cups/coffee/milk etc. This is not the fault of our steward who was friendly, helpful and attentive. More it is an organizational fault instigated by management and should be rectifed by them. 2) Many of the tables in King's Court are unstable. Not only does this make eating a meal somewhat unpleasant, but one table we sat at was so unstable that we spilt a cup of scalding hot coffee. Given the status and calibre of QM2 it seems unbelievable that this easy to solve problem had not been rectified by the end of the voyage despite a number of complaints from passengers. 3) The facilities at the guest laundrettes are woefully inadequate for the number of passengers -18 washing machines (when they are all working) for over 2,500 passengers. The numbers tell the story. The situation was exacerbated because the cost of having the laundry done by the ship was so high - at the cheapest it was two dollars per item. This situation bought out the worst in some passengers with angry outbursts and aggressive behaviour. Our suggestion that the cost (of having the laundry done by the ship) be brought down to alleviate the situation was rejected. Positives - 1) Stateroom was large, comfortable, well decorated and on a day to day basis worked very well. We loved the balcony which was spacious enough to sit out in comfort and afforded us some spectcular sights. 2) Ship was spectacular with a wide range of activities although we did find that many started too late in the evening for us at 9.45 p.m. Day time activities during days at sea were good - regular bridge, art lessons, craft activities etc. and some one off events including a passenger choir, line dancing and even a class where you could learn how to juggle. There were lots of famous and informative speakers giving talks and presentations. The swimming pools, games room, library, gym etc. meant there was plenty to do on board ship and most of these facilities were well run. However some of the teachers were not up to scratch - notebly the first bridge teacher we had at the start of the cruise, and the art teacher who was very knowleageable, but had a poor approach to her students and who could not actually paint very well. This opinion is based on the paintings done by her that she showed us to demonstrate techniques. 3) The staff on board ship were smart, attentive and generally efficient. Many went out of their way to help - the deck hand who climbed the ship's railing to retrieve my husbands hat, the World Voyage conceierge who was so much help when we had to go home early because of illness. Her assistance was of real value and we cannot thank her enough. The disembarkation was as effiicient, fast and as comfortable as it was possible to be given the circumstances. 4) The ship's shore excursions were varied and well organized given the very real constraints experienced in some ports, but we did find the cost of these to be high. We ended up using other cruise excursion operators and found these to be less expensive and more geared to our individual wishes. 5) Food was generally good, varied and there were a wide range of venues although some incurred additional charges.The Brittania Restaurant served lovely food - I can reccommend the ice cream!. We also took advantage of the free room service - breakfast on our balcony was particularly welcome on the days we went ashore on excursions. Overall we had a fabulous time, and were particularly impressed with the care taken by Cunard staff in difficult circumstances. Nothing was too much trouble when there was a problem,evident in the care taken of us when I was ill, which was second to none. The ship is magnificent, lots of stylish and attractive areas with the WOW factor. It attracted a lot of attention in virtually every port we visited. A trip to remember. Read Less

This was one of many wonderful cruises on Silversea but by far the longest at 73 days. This was part of this years World Cruise. I have high praise and a 10 for everything. Getting on and off the ship was very smooth. The ship needs new carpets and some improvements here and there but nothing major. Dining was easy. Reservations were easy to get and we were always acomodated. The poolside luncheon menu is good but for such a long stay could use some new items , perhaps a weekly special sandwich - minor point. Entertainment and activities could fill up your entire day if that is what you wanted. On board bridge teachers as well as "arts and crafts" and language classes abound. The pool deck was superb with service like no other for those that enjoy the outside on sea days. Jogging deck was always ready even after some heavy downpours. The gym is small but it is built in and I don't know how that could be improved. On board personal trainer was one of the best I have experienced in over 500 days on SS. Ports were extensive ranging from the relative tranquility of Hawaii and the Society Islands to the kaleidoscopic experiences in Indonesia and Malaysia. The beauty of the Philippine Islands took me by surprise. There was a wonderful tour there which took me snorkeling and swimming. A treat for the senses. I would do this again in a heart beat. Ship & crew were far & above expectations. Food was excellent @ beginning of cruise but average by the end, was to bland for my taste. Excursions were excellent, some countries guides were below average. The ports were good, some could have been skipped & more time spent @ other ports. No sports excursions such as golf, sporting events ( would have loved to go to cricket or rugby matches. No deep sea fishing. Viking could have gotten well over 30 people for these activities. The medical staff was excellent. Our room was great. Housekeeping was excellent WiFi was always an issue. Entertainment was good, lecturers were hit and miss, seemed to be overrun by UK lectures. If I’m in the Far East would liked to have had Far East lecturers not British etc. Also UK entertainment was to much, especially comedians., with most of the passengers US Or Canadian don’t get British humor But everything put together was well above my expectations. Especially being Vikings first round the world cruise & going to many ports they have never been too Read Less

This cruise was for 121 days and was Absolutely fantastic. Viking pulled out all the stops for this round the world. They added many extras like 24 hour room service, free laundry, and premium drink package. Everything was top notch. There was over 50 stops and each one was unique and interesting. The excursions were well planned and exceeded my expectations. Customer service was incredible. Every detail was thought about and taken care of. Although we visited many different countries all the customs procecedures were well taken of, eliminating any custom issues. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and professional and the tour buses very modern with airconditioning. The crew was superb and the Captain, cruise director, and general manager were spectactular. Even though we had over 900 passengers, the managers personally knew me and my background. The crew worked very well as a team with showed that management was very effective. The food, entertainment, and cultural presentations were first class. I cannot say enough on how good this cruise was! I would highly recommend Viking to all my friends. Read Less

Viking offered their first world cruise that for us started in Los Angeles January 5, 2018 and ended in England on May 5, 2018. 4 months, 25 countries and 52 ports. I can't say enough how much the crew on Viking exceeded every expectation and provided customer service that was 5 star ++! You can not imaginine how efficient being on board ship allows you to make the most of your time, not only while at sea but also when at a port of call. Viking offers included tours at every port of call, along with many optional tours at each port. You can also go ashore in most countries and tour on your own. Most, not all ports, are very closet to if not right at city centers or you can take a taxi or "Tuk Tuk" to your desired destination. While on board Viking ships, 6 now in use and I believe another 8 or more under construction, there is so much offered that you can either choose to participate or not. We enjoyed the "Trivia" sessions where when at port for 1 hour you team up and play Trivia answering 15 questions and then a final team playoff. You not only learn a lot but get to meet so many new friends. The nightly entertainment was exceptional and changed as new top notch tallent came on board every few days. Most important is Viking's service. I expect a high level of service and my expection was exceeded time after time. Their staff from the Captain, first mate, Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, Chef and down to each employee treated you like family with smiles and chit-chat. We have already booked another cruise with Viking and are looking forward to seeing many old friends and can't wait for our next adventure on Viking. Don't wait or procrastinate, your own "Trip of a Life Time" is waiting for you...you won't regret it as you will have so many adventures and meet so many new friends to share your experience with on board Viking. Go see, experience new countries and share with your friends. Have lots of fun! Read Less

This was my second expedition cruise with Silver Seas; the first having been on the Prince Albert II in Svalbard. Therefore I had high expectations, most of which were met. I agree with other reviewers that the ship is old and needs to be replaced. There is only so much cosmetic refurbishing that can be done. That said, the rooms were small, but very clean and comfortable. The public areas had also been refurbished. The food was excellent and up to Silverseas standards. The dinner portions were small enough so that you could eat all four courses if desired. Wait staff were excellent and identified me by name soon after we commenced our voyage. My maid and butler were both charming. The maid kept my room looking "together" throughout the voyage. I was pleased to have the butler service so I could have a meal in my room, which I did several times since I returned to the ship after very hot and humid weather excursions and didn't feel like eating in the dining room. I only did "hot rocks" once, but it was a lot of fun and had no problem whatsoever in reserving this. The bar/kitchen near the pool was too small and the wait staff did a super job in trying to cope with inadequate space. Overall I thought the staff was excellent and we had some very interesting lectures, although not the quantity that I experienced on the Arctic cruise. The first lecture was generally at 9:15AM, which was a bit early, esp. on days at sea. Unfortunately, a cyclone off the coast of Madagascar affected our time at Aldabra Atoll. The crew should be commended for being able to land us for a late afternoon walk to the ranger station; at least we were able to see a large number of the Aldabra giant tortoise. Due to the weather, we could not do the lagoon tour or any snorkeling/diving the next day. Most of the coral in the Maldives had been bleached out due to an El Nino in 2016. However, we did see a lot of beautifully colored fish. Snorkelling in the Seychelles was not good due to weather complications. Great great shore excursions in Zanzibar and Victoria. Poor scheduling though because we landed in both on Sundays! Thank you to Jamie again for fixing my mask and getting to my "taxi" on shore in Dar es Salaam. I'm not sure who was at fault for this but there was NO information for pre or post-embarkation/disembarkation or hotels given to me prior to the cruise. I made my own arrangements in Colombo and used the ship's way-overpriced $89 ride from the port in Dar to my centrally-located hotel, which I arranged on my own. Read Less

The brand new Viking Sun, one of Viking’s many identical mid-sized ships to come, seemed ideal as it would be sparklingly new in every way. Then too, the itinerary sounded fantastic from Miami, Florida to London via the Panama Canal and Los Angeles, multiple south seas islands, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Manila, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia/IndoChina, Thailand, India, Arabian ports, Egypt, Malta, Algiers, southern Spanish ports, and Porto Spain. Many cruise ship features that are usually paid extra en route were included in the quoted cruise fares which made it feel richer and more convenient, but of course passengers are getting nothing for free. Wi-fi, for example, which has been a ripoff for many passengers for years, was “free” but very marginal and intermittent at best. For a very long cruise one was basically unable to carry on much of modern ordinary financial or communications needs with such inadequate service. Many ports were simply too far from sight-seeing and cultural destinations to make visiting them much more than very long round trip bus rides. Partly this was poor planning and port selection by Viking. Partly it was a low pecking order in port assignments for a firm new to many world ports. It also showed shallowness of knowledge about the most desirable places to visit. Many passengers were experienced and well educated and in some cases experienced comical day tours for quite a bit of extra cost. This was also true of on board entertainment, much of which was sophomoric. There was quite a bit of crew rotation which caused service of all kinds to be quite variable. About the time young crew members knew and performed their jobs well, they’d be off the ship and new ones joined. The younger crew themselves were wonderful and eager to please, so it was management’s newness to long cruising that was at fault. Cabins or staterooms were new, clean, cheerful, functional, and all had small verandas. Food service consisted of a breakfast and nearly day long buffet, three dinner restaurants, and several small bars and snack sites. One dinner restaurant was walk-in and the other two were reservation only. Good food was had, for the most part, but portions were rather meager in the reservation restaurants. The chefs in these two were quite creative, often too much so for some people. I would say food was one of the better aspects of Viking Sun. Senior crew who interfaced with the public seemed inexperienced and sometimes rather rude. Many were not very fluent in cruise languages, primarily English. There were quite a few excellent lecturers on board between many ports who added much to the amateurish shore excursions and on board entertainment. They were knowledgeable and fine teachers on many subjects. Read Less

We chose Viking because we had cruised with them on the rivers of Europe. We chose the 141 day World Cruise so we could see the world. We were not disappointed on either goal. Many friends asked before the cruise if 141days was too much and we weren’t sure but now that it is done we could recommend it without reservation. The ship was brand new and a beautiful design, elegant but comfortable, plenty of places to find a quiet spot to read. There were bridge lessons and duplicate play which was a surprise. The entertainment was fantastic and quite varied. Food was outstanding. Viking doesn’t nickel and dime you with a lot of extra expenses. On such a long cruise we actually got to know the crew well and crew members actually left the ship before we did and the good bye ceremonies were great. Our Cruise Director, Heather Clancy, was the most amazing talent and amazing person. As we left the ship to come home at 4:45AM in London, she was there to say good bye and give us a hug, as were the other Officers. She also led our Christian Worship each week. The house Band was amazing and backed up a wide range of entertainers on the stage at night and performed afternoon concerts in the atrium. The whole 141 days was the trip of a lifetime. Read Less

We have done 4 world cruises previously and wanted to try their first World Cruise 141 days.The ship is lovely the food was like most ships we did not as a whole enjoy the specialty restaurants the food was not the higher quality we expected. The portions were small and usually too salty or strange to our taste that even though they were offered to the world cruise set free we canceled our reservations after the 5th try! The Italian restaurant was good but did not offer spaghetti or angel hair pasta without previous arrangement. The room was lovely we had a Deluxe Veranda and the heated floors and large flat screen TV was the best we had seen, even in some of the ships highest end rooms! The service was excellent the restaurant staff and bar service was top notch. Because the ship was financed by the largest Chinese Bank the serving staff had to be a large portion of the staff was Chinese and they were well trained and excellent at their jobs! They went overboard with their on board cultural experiences! Entertainment was often local and the ship usually did only one show unfortunately there was no way to display the talent properly. Their theater seating could not seat everyone on board so many had to stand or dodge the person in front or get there early to get the front row. For some reason the ship refused to do 2 shows a night even though they know neither the pool area or theater could seat everyone on board. This was something we had never run into before so if you are going for entertainment you might pick another ship. All entertainment except for 1 night a week at the disco (the dance floor will only accommodate 6 or 8 couples) the bar was the only place they had real rock and role to dance to everything else was very cultural high brow. Guitar, Chamber Music,Opera ,Piano and Violinist were the order of the day every day!!!! If this is what you like this is your ship but if you were raised on Rock and Roll like most Americans seek another ship! A once in awhile comedian or magician was a treat. Believe me this can make a lonnnnnggg World cruise! If you like musical theater and dance this is not your ship. The ports of call were standard fare and as they were new at this some mistakes were made they did not have the money to pay for us to cruise Hulong Bay as we were promised we were not happy! One of the best things on board was the large outdoor seating for meals on the stern. When the weather was good they threw all the sliding doors back and it was wonderful. The Spa is spacious and the extras they offer are great fun. The Gym is well thought out and works very well. Only it does not open early so if you want to exercise early or late you will find that it is closed to the guests and opened for the crew only! Beware we were told Cruise insurance was included of 150% when my husband became ill but they paid us less than 100%. There was no asterisk or foot note to say up to etc. even on the contract but the insurance company refused to live up to the promises that Viking made to us in their brochures so you might want to get additional insurance. In essence she is a lovely ship but would be better on a shorter cruise. Also beware the promises that Viking makes they will not pay 150% they lied! When I booked the cruise they said they had Zumba on board and they did not! Read Less

Inaugural world cruise that gave me an opportunity to see the world on a beautiful new ship. The ship is beautiful and has so many spaces for meeting friends or spending some quiet time alone. The crew was always helpful and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The guest speakers were excellent and the entertainment was excellent. Lots of local entertainers and a variety throughout the cruise. The captain was very friendly and gave a noontime status report. In every port we were provided with many options to fill our time. The dining options were very good and several local chefs joined the cruise to provide local favorites. Our cabin was comfortable and the staff were constantly checking to make sure we had anything we wanted. Viking went out of their way to make sure we had a memorable vacation. Read Less

Viking has thought of everything to make this World Cruise the best of everything. The entertainment, excursions, enrichment, and food have all been exceptional. Viking has staffed this World Cruise with their best people in every department. Thus service is excellent. We have enjoyed cooking classes on days at sea. The enrichment program speakers have been very good and come from a variety of backgrounds including art history, government, retired military, and even a cookbook writer. Please note that this cruise is not for handicap or elderly people. The excursions require quite a bit of walking, climbing stairs, and stamina. No excursion is wheel chair, scooter, or walker friendly. Getting around the ship can be maneuvered easily when the seas are calm. We have encountered quite a few days of rough seas when even able bodied guests have struggled to stay on their feet. All in all our expectations have been more than met on this wonderful Viking Sun. We've always wanted to go on a world cruise (150 days) - and we had heard such wonderful things about Viking. Also, the Viking Sun was a new ship with modern electronics. The ship was a smaller one with less than 1000 passengers, which was great for us. All the appointments on the ship were clean, new and comfortable. A goodly number of dining venues was available and all were very good. The ship planned many, many daily activities just in case the shore excursions weren't enough. And at every port, there was always one included excursion. There were also a varied quantity of other excursions if you wanted to go in a different direction. The nice thing about the ship being smaller was that we rarely had to be tendered into port. Also, we visited ports that larger ships couldn't go to. Initially the Wi-Fi was too slow, but the management listened and arranged to have it augmented and sped up. Much happier after that. The en suite TV electronic system was marvelous. The service was wonderful and the crew always cheerful and attentive. Getting on and off this ship was much easier than the larger ships by far. Will definitely sail with Viking again. Read Less

We have always enjoyed cruising with Viking. First with their river cruises and then Ocean cruise. We initially were skeptical about a 120 day ocean cruise but we were. very happy that we chose to take this cruise. I had some food allergy issues but the staff were very good to make sure my needs were accommodated. The staff of the ship were excellent. From the Barista who made us Capuchinos, to the bartenders and all the dining staff in the various restaurants. The Captain had a good sense of humour and kept us informed of what was going on. The Cruise Director was outstanding in all aspects and readily available to talk to anyone. The entertainment throughout the cruise was excellent. The enrichment lectures were very good for the most part. The shore excursions surprised as and were very good. Overall, no complaints at all. I would gladly recommend this cruise and Viking to anyone. Read Less

We had planned for this Viking inaugural round-the-world cruise two years earlier, but we decided to get married one week before our departure - so it became our extended honeymoon and what a memorable honeymoon it turned out to be. Before signing up for the cruise, we studied the countries and ports we will be visiting. We were very impressed with the ports that Viking has chosen since most of them were not the frequently picked by the usual crowd. We were also glad that Viking has taken the chore of obtaining all the necessary visas at no cost to us. The entire embarkation and disembarkation process was a breeze and we were the envy of the passengers of other cruise ships docking nearby. Everything was top notch, services such as dining, entertainment and excursions, to the ship and cabin. Viking has always been rated numero uno for their river cruises, but after launching world cruises three years ago, Viking has been rated numero uno already for 2016 and 2017 - very impressive. Viking has won us over as life-long clients. Well done, Viking! Read Less

This was our third cruise with Viking and we chose this cruise because of our past experience. The ship is so conveniently designed for the comfort of the passengers. Our Cabin was quite comfortable even for a 122 day cruise. The steward were extremely attentive and took care of our every need. The food was very much to our liking and offered many alternatives for us.there were always excellent alternatives from which to choose. The shore excursions seemed well organized and offered many alternatives from which to choose. There was high quality entertainment every evening. I don’t think we missed more than a handful of the performances. There just seemed to be so many things to do for personal enjoyment. The interaction with so many new friends was awesome and several have kept in touch even four months later. We have booked another, our fourth cruise with Viking and are counting the days. We even booked the same cabin as well. With all of Viking ships constructed and laced out the same it just felt like we were going to our home away from home. We were on Deck 3 with an ocean view on the starboard side of the ship. On Deck 3 all the cabins are ocean view on the starboard size. There are no cabins on Deck 3 port side. There is only one stairway and two elevators serving the starboard side. There are emergency exit forward and aft on Deck 3. The Internet connection and speed were okay for a ship. There are two 110 volts and two 220 volts electrical outlets on the desk in the room. There are two end tables with one electrical outlet 220 volts on the wall above the end tables. The entertainment was very goods. The meals in the main dining room, specialty dining and the Wave were very good. We did not stop at Saint John and Bar Harbor because of bad weather. Portland, Maine was added in lieu of Bar Harbor. The seas were a little rough after leaving the St. Lawrence into the Atlantic Ocean. Read Less

It was our 9th sailing, which we have mostly done on the the larger ships--Marina and Riviera. Its been 3 years since we sailed on a small O ship. We were delightfully surprised at how lovely the smaller ship was. Immaculate even though we were told it was going into dry dock next year. Everything was up to O standards and I didn't miss the fact that there were only 2 vs 4 restaurants. All was great. We are sailing on the Regatta next year for 30 days and looking forward to that trip too. We were concerned that the PH suite was much smaller than the larger ships. It was, but it was still perfect and plenty of storage room. We had issue with mold in the tub. Next day, cut out and totally refreshed and beautiful. Service impeccable. The Mighty Amazon River has long been on our bucket list, & the newly refurbished Sirena's 34-day sailing from Miami to Buenos Aires sounded like the way to go!! The first week at sea was uneventful & unexciting, as we bypassed devastated Puerto Rico, & visited St Kitts, Antigua, & Barbados! We enjoyed the day we spent exploring the ruins of Devil's Island, the former penal colony off the coast of French Guyana. Unfortunately, we were totally taken by surprise as it was announced that almost all purchases aboard ship for the next 3.5 weeks (as we sailed thru Brazilian waters) would be subject to an extra 25% tax. (We solved this problem quite simply, by halting all unnecessary shipboard spending!!) Almost everything was included in our ticket price: air, gratuities, 7 shore excursions per person, internet package. There were no art auctions & no pushy shipboard photogs to contend with. We were not nickled and dimed over soft drinks, specialty coffee, & bottled water. Since the Sirena drew only 20 feet of water, We were able to travel 900 miles upriver to Manaus in the heart of the triple canopy Amazon rainforest. While the destination speakers for the Amazon region were well chosen, the Oceania home office staff of millennials let us down when it came to providing suitable movies that might have dovetailed with our journey!! As we entered the River Platte, it would have presented a great opportunity to view "The Battle of the River Platte". It would have also been timely to have watched "Evita" again, as we neared Argentina. Instead we were subjected to current, inane films, such as one depicting Breaking Bad actor Cranston hiding out in his garage for several months!!! We manged to dine in Sirena's Specialty restaurants on numerous occasions - especially in their magnificent Red Ginger Asian Fusion spot. Afternoons the main dining room was converted into Jacques - a specialty French Bistro - with mixed results. The Waves grill by the pool closed way too early @4PM. Read Less

We spent several days prior to the cruise in Barcelona and that was one of the reasons we chose this particular cruise as we wanted to visit there. Service was terrific, staff couldn't have been nicer, food excellent, particularly dining at La Reserve. Beauty salon was also well staffed and very helpful. We felt that on a ship of this level that the laundry room should have been free of cost. As we did not buy a drink package the cost per drink was extremely pricey and this too we felt was beyond what it should have been. Tours offered by the ship are very expensive, best to make your own arrangements, use Cruise Critic Roll Call to meet people of mutual interest. Go to afternoon tea, that is a must.. Read Less

This was my first cruise but definitely not my last. My husband and I picked this cruise in particular because it looked like it wouldn't have any small children running around, as it was after Labor Day and the target demographic seemed to be for those 40 and up. It worked- we were nearly the youngest couple on board. Everyone we spoke to was an Oceania regular or had come from one of the bigger ship lines and not gone back. One couple was on their 20th Oceania cruise! The Oceania Regatta was everything I pictured a cruise ship to be. All the decor was very classically elegant and reminded me a bit of an English country home. The service was great, the food was delicious, and I never felt crowded. I spent lots of time in the beautiful Horizons bar/tearoom just looking at the amazing views. It was cool out but the saltwater pool was heated- we were nearly always the only ones utilizing it and the hot tubs. We got 4 nights at the specialty restaurants on board, 2 at Polo Grill, 2 at Toscana. I am in sales and so spend a lot of time taking customers to steakhouses, so I'm a bit hard to please, I suppose. I was pretty unimpressed with Polo Grill on both occasions. The service felt very rushed and the food was average. Toscana, on the other hand, was absolutely amazing. The two meals we had there were the best of the whole cruise. The service was impeccable. The main dining room food and service was excellent every time. We had breakfast outside nearly every morning in the Terrace Cafe, overlooking the wake of the ship. Beautiful and relaxing. I will say my biggest complaint about the Regatta was the coffee. It always tasted old and terrible. They have espresso machines with Illy beans but I like good brewed coffee and you just could not get it anywhere on board. We stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka, The Hubbard Glacier, Victoria (BC), and Astoria (OR). Ketchikan was very charming, they have a nice little area on a pier with shops overlooking a creek. The salmon were getting near the end of spawning and you could watch them from the pier. We went to Dolly's House and took the $10 tour, which was worth it just to see the well-preserved kitchen and household items from the early 1900s. We also took an Oceania excursion that included a short nature walk and canoe trip. We were very fortunate to have a beautiful clear sunny day, apparently that is a rarity in Ketchikan. I was saddened to see that Ketchikan and Juneau's dockfronts were very cheesy and touristy. Apparently the cruise lines recently purchased all the waterfront property and filled it with jewelry and souvenir shops like you see in the Caribbean. There were dozens of tacky jewelry shops with sales people out front trying to lure you inside, it was really off-putting. The locals we spoke to were not happy about it. Sitka was much smaller and quaint, we really enjoyed our hike and shopping downtown. They had lots of unique little shops. All of our excursions (mostly hiking/nature walks) were very well run, had great local guides, and were very enjoyable. Another stroke of luck was on glacier day. Visibility was great and we were able to get right next to the Hubbard Glacier. Apparently on previous runs the fog had kept the Regatta from getting to it/near it. We saw lots of calving as we had cocktails on deck. What a great experience. Victoria and Astoria were nice, a bit boring. My husband and I managed to find the only bad restaurant in Victoria's Chinatown. Yelp really let us down there! The Flavel house in Astoria was a nice little tour of a beautifully preserved mansion from the 1800s. The Buoy Brewery was the highlight of our trip to Astoria, it is a waterfront brewery built on a dock with amazing food and drinks, with sea lions that live underneath it. There is a glass section of the floor you can look through to see them all lazing about and barking at each other. Our days at sea were relaxing and fun. We didn't attend any shows (they looked corny) or participate in too many activities, we just relaxed and lurked in our stateroom. Our cruise ended in San Francisco. We skipped the long taxi line and grabbed an Uber (apparently the taxis shun the ports because the fares aren't profitable). All in all, it was a great trip. We booked another cruise on Oceania while we were on board, we really enjoyed the all inclusive smaller ship atmosphere. Read Less

I write this from the perspective of a 47 year old cruiser who has sailed with Oceania 7 times. My cabin experience has always been a PH2 or PH3 on deck 10 or 11 on Riviera/Marina and deck 8 on the R Class ships. For reference and point of view purposes I have sailed on most major mass market lines. In recent years my taste has changed and strongly desire smaller ships with less passengers and a more inclusive experience where you are not nickel and dimed. Therefore, lines such as Oceania, Crystal, Seabourn, Azamara, Regent and Silversea have been strongly preferenced. The condition of the Marina is tip top shape - especially for a ship built in 2011. Food remains outstanding. Cruising on Oceania is more akin to staying in a really nice floating hotel as opposed to a true cruising experience. Highlights not only include the dining room and specialty restaurants, but also tea time and the strings. I also believe Oceania and Regent have the best pool areas at sea. Unfortunately, I feel strongly that Oceania has lost ground compared to the competition - so much so that we just booked our first Viking Ocean cruise as reviews seem to compare the two lines as apples to apples with Viking Ocean being the better apple. Unfortunately, Oceania's apple has become a bit rotten. Here's why: Despite a beautiful ship and producing excellent food something is missing on Oceania and has been progressively more noticeable. That "something" is service and absolute lack of personalization. I've noticed on my last few Oceania cruises that the crew does not engage with the passengers and it is clear they are there to do their job and that's it. There is frequent talk in front of guests about "when my contract is up". No similes, no being addressed by name, no remembering preferences. In fact, for the most part no warmth. For example, my wife and I kept bumping into a social hostess we met at a captain's function the second day of the cruise and we would always say hello and try to engage. She would not give us the time of day. A social hostess! Another example - this one from the top - the captain's cabin was just in front of ours and I would frequently see him in the corridor. It was painful for him to return a simple hello. Staff were regimented and inflexible. All decisions - no matter how minor - had to come from the top. There was no willingness or ability to even make small decisions to cater to guests on their own. For example, at the juice bar I asked for bananas, oranges and ice. The employee said he was only allowed to make what was on the preset menu despite all the ingredients and a blender sitting right in front of him. Sounds picky? Not really when every aspect of any small request is treated this way. The overall lack of flexibility and unfriendliness of the staff is unfortunate. Part of what makes cruising enjoyable is the staff. When the staff is miserable and stupidly rigid it impacts the overall experience. In summary - regarding the staff - they walked around like creatures from the Walking Dead and did not seem happy. Unless you bought a drink package getting an honest drink is impossible on Oceania. All drinks are measured pours and quite stingy. Even the "doubles" are weak. A double top shelf (i.e. Kettle One or Grey Goose) martini costs north of $22 before tip is included. Bartenders have zero flexibility to think on their own and actually some are worried about their pours because they are "scrutinized" according to one. Remarkably, Celebrity - a mass market line - makes much more honest and better drinks without the measured pour. Oceania shore excursions are consistently awful. I would not waste your money and instead visit sites such as tours by locals or Viator to arrange your own tours. Not only will you have a more customized experienced and skip out on painful bus journeys, but you will save a ton of money. As an aside, I think Oceania would benefit from increasing their prices slightly and making drinks all-inclusive. They should get rid of O Life promotions and just make every sailing with included WiFi, beverages, gratuities and lastly not insult guests by requiring tokens for the laundry. Those inclusions coupled with some serious Ritz Carlton style customer service training would potentially put Oceania back in the running. On all my previous Oceania cruises I booked future cruises. Not on this one. I am done with Oceania for the foreseeable future as I've tried other options and liked them better; hence the danger of trying other things as you might just like them better and change your spending habits. Sorry Oceania - what was once a fabulous product is just fair now when compared to the competition in the market. Read Less

We always wanted to cruise on Oceania but never really wanted to pay the higher price. My husband is always looking for deals so when he came across this cruise and figured out everything that would be included this turned out to be a wonderful deal. Because this was our 1st Oceania cruise we decided to do everything through them (airline and transfers) once we arrived at the airport an Oceania representative was right there to greet us and took us to breakfast at the airport hotel. There was a wonderful lounge at the hotel we were able to use while we waited for the bus to take us to the pier. Embarkation was smooth and before we knew we were in our cabin. Needless to say Oceania did not disappoint, everything was fabulous. The food from the buffet to the specialty restaurants was the best I've ever had on a cruise ship. The service in the restaurants was top notch, they couldn't have been any more attentive. The cruise staff was so friendly I felt like I had known them forever. I will be sailing Oceania many more times. Read Less

My wife and I cruised on Marina, from Southampton to Copenhagen, in August of 2017. We had originally booked on the Concierge level, but when offered an upgrade for an additional fee, we upgraded to a Penthouse Suite. We were not too impressed with some of the issues we faced while on the cruise and the way some of the ship’s staff responded to these matters. Before getting into detail on the issues, we must stress that our butler, the housekeeping staff, and the restaurant and dining room staff did a fabulous job, were attentive and courteous, and are not related to the issues we encountered. Additionally, the Penthouse Suite itself was very well-appointed, a good size compared to the Concierge rooms, had lots of storage and a walk-in closet, and a sizeable washroom (the shower can feel a bit tight, however, when you’re over six-feet tall). Now for the issues we encountered. The first one concerned a bottle of 18-year-old Scotch ordered for our suite. The Oceania website indicated that this was a one litre bottle, but when we opened the box containing the Scotch, it was only a 750 ml bottle. When asked, our butler pursued the matter with other staff on the ship, but it took two days before I was informed that they did not have one litre bottles, at which time the original bottle was returned to me. During the two days that elapsed, there were a couple of differing stories about what was happening. In the end, I was offered four shots of the Scotch in any of the restaurants in addition to the smaller bottle, which still did not match the one litre quantity originally described on their website. I accepted this, only because I was getting tired of how long it was taking them to handle the matter. Given this is an error, I wonder if Oceania and their marketing folks will correct their website to reflect the fact that Glenmorangie 18 Year Scotch is not available in a 1 Litre bottle. Two other matters related to shore excursions. First, we had originally booked eight excursions each in March, choosing them to fit our schedule based on our preferences for dining on the ship. When we arrived on the ship, we received a letter indicating that one of our tours had been cancelled. After reviewing alternatives for this port, we could not find a suitable tour as a replacement. When I tried to get an answer from a supposedly higher level person, I was told that the excursion had been cancelled because “only 4 people had signed up” for the tour. If that were the case, why didn’t Oceania recognise this well in advance (say in July), and inform us at an earlier date, rather than after we arrived on the ship. For a supposedly premium cruise line, they should do better than last-minute advice. The other tour issue was related to an excursion where the time was arbitrarily changed from morning to afternoon. We didn’t notice this until the day before the excursion when we pulled the tickets out. Someone on the ship stated that the ticket pack included a warning that time could change, which may cover their posterior, but they should inform customers more actively when such changes occur. Perhaps Oceania needs to recognise that when people arrive on the ship, customers are actively trying to unpack while receiving communication about W-Fi, booze upselling, cruise details, etc., and may not check all details assuming that Oceania would be properly informed of such changes. The next problem was related to the canceled excursion. We advised the ‘Destinations’ people that we could not find a suitable alternative, and then asked the individual if the refund would be applied as a credit to my wife’s credit card. The individual responded in the affirmative. However, a few days before the end of the cruise, we checked with the ‘Reception’ people to confirm this, and were told that the refund was a shipboard credit that was required to be spent on board Marina. My wife and I told them in no uncertain terms that we had been advised differently, and it there was no way that we would be spending the amount onboard. At the point we checked, the credit and not even been applied to our shipboard account. I then asked to whom I should speak to escalate the issue, and was advised to return later to discuss with the assistant purser. When I returned to discuss with the assistant purser, she then agreed that they would refund the amount in US cash, but that she would need to talk to the “Destinations” people to have them process the refund. The assistant purser, then called me later to advise that a $100 per person amount would be applied as a ‘goodwill gesture’ – an amount less than what the excursions actually cost. So I pushed back again, and talked to the ‘Destinations’ people, who frankly were not very customer friendly, but who finally agreed to an amount that reflected the actual out-of-pocket cost for the excursion. I was then advised by the assistant purser that processing the refund would occur overnight, and we could see it on a preliminary statement the next day. When I went to check the account the next day, Oceania had added significant amounts for gratuities – gratuities which we had prepaid months before the cruise. We insisted that we had prepaid the gratuities, and the assistant purser agreed to check in the matter – the next day, the charges for gratuities were removed from the next preliminary statement. In the end, we finally received the amount in US cash. However, the lack of consistency and answers from various staff, the back and forth to resolve the issue, and the additional erroneous accounting charges were what I would call a classic ‘Gong Show’. The last item was related to our baggage upon disembarkation. The website description for the Penthouse suite specifically listed ”Last minute luggage collection” as one of the services exclusive to the suite. However, when we received our letter outlining luggage preparation, it stated. “Please place your luggage outside her sweeper statement by 10 PM the night” before disembarkation. Again, another visit to talk to the staff in ’Reception’ confirmed the 10 PM deadline – I showed them a printed copy of their webpage, and still got a deer in the headlights look. Obviously, Oceania links to upsell people to premium suites with promises that are blatantly misleading; the definition of last-minute to most reasonable people would be most couple of hours prior to disembarkation. Regarding the restaurants and the food, there were some items in Red Ginger that were ‘Wows’ (the Spicy Duck and Watermelon Salad, the Miso Glazed Seabass, and the Twice-cooked Crispy Chicken). Polo Grill was comparable in quality to most steak houses at which I’ve eaten, albeit not as good as higher end steakhouses. The Caesar Salad was definitely mediocre compared to most restaurants – while it’s prepared ‘tableside’, the dressing appeared to be prepared in advance, rather than the dressing ingredients being combined at tableside. Overall, I would rank the food as better than average, but not consistently as great as Oceania implies in their marketing materials. Additionally, in the Penthouse Suite, we were entitled to nightly canapes; however, there were a limited number of choices, and the choices never changed during the entire cruise. Oceania provides a survey for passengers to complete at the end of the cruise and I overheard one of the people in ‘Reception’ stated that they take these and customer feedback seriously. I did not complete the detailed survey as intended, as I was so frustrated with the above, but I did complete the free form section firmly requesting that someone with some authority contact me at home to discuss the several issues that we encountered on the cruise. To date (over fifteen business days since returning home), Oceania has not made contact, so it appears that they’re not interested in customer concerns or feedback, nor do they appear to be interested in making changes to avoid such problems in future. Perhaps Oceania should consider reducing the number of direct mail pieces trying to sell future cruises, and divert these funds so they can focus on responding properly to customer issues and improving communication and training to improve the customer experience. Given they purport to be a premium cruise line (and are often described as ‘upper premium’), our experience demonstrates that they seem to overpromise and under deliver. As someone who has spent several decades in the consumer and business-to-business marketing, communication, advertising, and web realm, dealing with customer issues is something that I was passionate about, and to which I responded extremely quickly. Oceania’s standards and resolution, or lack thereof, do not come close to the standards I would expect from a brand that purports to be a premium (or upper premium) cruise line. Read Less

This was our first cruise with Oceania on the recommendation of our travel agent after an extremely disappointing Christmas/New Year Cruise with Seabourn earlier in the year. After 8 cruises with Seabourn our loyalty was trashed and we needed to look elsewhere. We enjoy good food, good service and wine and Oceania exceeded our expectations on all levels. Embarkation and Disembarkation was as smooth as you would expect and we were delighted to board this beautiful ship. Original artwork graced the walls throughout, lots of beautiful spaces are available to relax and generally the décor was very pleasing. We never felt crowded on this ship or had trouble finding a table in a restaurant or by the pool. The cabins are smaller than the Seabourn suites but this did not worry us in the least. We had a balcony and were not short on room. The food and the service were nothing short of excellent. The variety of cuisines available with the four specialty restaurants was wonderful and apart from these the dining room was always good as was the buffet in the Terrace. Oceania definitely provided us with the best dining experiences we have had at sea. We had internet and a beverage package included in our fare which meant we did not have to put our hand in our pocket for anything other than shore excursions if we chose to partake. We are not big on entertainment with regard to shows when we cruise as we are so busy throughout the days exploring new ports that it would be unfair to comment regarding the quality of the entertainment. As far as we were concerned the shore excursions were good when we decided to utilise them. Overall we loved our first cruise with Oceania and have put down a deposit for our next adventure. The more casual atmosphere they provide is a welcome change for us as we are so over formal nights and it was a delight for my husband not to pack the dinner suit. We embarked on this cruise with no expectations and we were thrilled with our experience on all levels. Thank you Oceania! Read Less

This was a honeymoon cruise and expectations were high. On the third night of the cruise our shower lost pressure only to regain pressure while gushing hot thick brown water. Thank God my wife was not in the shower, otherwise her being covered in thick brown water would have ruined our honeymoon. I was told by reception we would have a plumber address the situation right away only to have our cleaning person assure us that a "water test" had been conducted. This attempt at a solution was insulting. I asked reception if we could have access to any available shower to sanitize only to be told that there was nothing they could do. A plumber left an indecipherable message confirming a leak the next day, but at that point I had already sanitized myself with a cold shower and hand sanitizer (...and slightly regained my wife's confidence that I wasn't completely defiled by sewage). We were apologized to with a cheap bottle (also insulting since we don't drink). Providing a shower would have resolved the problem. Instantaneously being told no when asked for showering options was disappointing. We tried to enjoy the remainder of the cruise, however the open berating of staff by management, the repeated errors made by the Destination Staff and wait staff, and the chaotic disembarkation force us to consider other options for future cruising. We avoided the entertainment (lack of interest) and specialty restaurants. We had booked all the specialty restaurants but cancelled after Red Ginger staff consistently got our order wrong.
