Overall, we had a pleasant cruise. In all fairness I do hold Princess to a higher standard than, say, NCL. We got the distinct feeling we were dealing with a crew where most were in training. They lacked attention to detail and knowledge, which improved somewhat over the period of the trip. The ship was just not is the best shape. Rust stains were prevalent, and most of the trip included a rather unpleasant sewer smell near the bow and upper-exterior decks. Food quality and variety were excellent, with the exception of the poor coffee in the Buffet. There was always something going on. Bars were themed and very comfortable. Alcohol drinks reflected variety and creativity. Cabins were very comfortable, and housekeeping service was excellent. We really enjoyed the overall layout of interior and exterior public areas on the Ruby. There was no overall central large pool, instead a number of smaller, sectioned areas that allowed for cruisers with different tastes to gather. The same can be said for the sprinkling of Bars throughout the ship. Entertainment was very nice, but nothing wowed us like our first Princess cruise that included Jeff Dunham and an Elton John impersonator. Mark, the Naturalist, and Tiki Dave, the Cultural guy, were the best, being both entertaining and informative. We continue to be underwhelmed and mystified by the need for all the shopping and art auctions on board. Ports were fine. One change we would consider would be to rent a car, especially to visit the Arizona Monument. Our tour drove us there and left us for 3 hours. Since the tour bus got there last, we did not get to take the boat tour, then were stuck waiting as the monument grounds do not take 3 hours to see. Lahaina was the best! Just get off the ship and wander around. No need for tours. People were friendly, and local dining and shopping were plentiful and reasonable. Make a point to walk into Kohola Brewing for a pint of excellent beer. We are cautious about taking a third Princess Cruise. Read Less

The cruise was fabulous. Truly magical! My only complaint was that sometimes the toilet flushed and sometimes it did not. It was a system wide problem and Princess compensated us for our trouble. Still, it was annoying. The dining was wonderful! Food was delicious and our waiter Aurelia and Asst. waiter Lido went out of their way to provide service that went above and beyond. The shows were quite nice. Some of the guest entertainers were not to our taste. They were good, but they played a selection of music that was designed for people in their 80s. Movies under the Stars was great and not too cold. Blankets were provided upon request. The Naturalist onboard was an interesting and engaging speaker. The guest lecturer spoke on Olympic games and the Nobel Prizes. He offered some unique tidbits of information and had personally met many of the people he spoke about. We only booked 3 shore excursions through the ship. One of them was for a tour of the Bishop Museum. Unfortunately, the tour was cancelled and no reason given even though it was listed as sold out. Sadly, we were not informed of the cancellation until 2 days beforehand. By that time most of the excursions were already booked so we had to settle for a less than optimal tour. The best shore excursion was snorkeling in Nawiliwili. The company took pains to keep everyone safe and to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves. Ensenada was both safe and fun. We took a locally operated 45min harbor tour through Juanitos (located right along the ocean walk) for $2,50 per person. It was a great deal and got to see sea lions VERY close up (within 7 feet of them). Overall it had a few bumps in the road, but was still a fabulous cruise and would happily do it again! Read Less

Unfortunately, this cruise had several issues which made the experience less than optimum. This was our 43rd cruise, our 9th on Princess. We normally cruise on Celebrity, so we have something to compare. The overall cruise was very nice with the following exceptions: (1) The "best internet at sea" was much less than the moniker would indicate! There were problems logging on, and even worse, logging off. The first day we used all 250 minutes while trying desperately to log off! To their credit, the minutes were restored, but the problems continued throughout the cruise. There were times when the service was extremely slow and others when it actually locked up. Could be a band width issue. There appears to be many issues which need to be addressed before this internet service is ready for prime time. (2) Two of the production shows were the same ones we saw in December on the Crown Princess and were good but not spectacular. The third production show was only thirty (30) minutes long with no costume changes or set changes. Singers and dancers were good as usual, but nothing exceptional. The Naturalist actually saved the day for us! He was interesting, knowledgeable, and in many cases extremely funny and personable. He was our highlight of the on-board entertainment. (3) Now for the main issue that soured the sweetness. The Anytime dining experience started out with 10-15 minute waiting times, which is acceptable for the first few days. During the middle of the cruise, the waiting times disappeared as one would expect. But on the final Formal Night (which, by the way, should be made OPTIONAL, since the dining room staff was allowing people in jeans and tee shirts in the dining room on all three Formal Nights!) we were told that the wait would be about 15-30 minutes. We were given a pager and retreated to the hallway outside the dining room where we waited FIFTY (50) MINUTES. We finally went to the greeter with our complaint and were escorted UPSTAIRS to the other dining room, where we were seated and then waited 10 more minutes before getting served. Apparently they were accommodating two (2) tables of $100.00 a plate "special diners", and it appeared that they were sorely understaffed to serve everyone. The lobster was tasteless and the usual cheerful wait staff appeared to be less than thrilled to be working that night! Very strange indeed.... Makes me want to rethink my cruise line choices in the future. Having trashed Princess, let me say there were pluses on board. Again, the Naturalist was our saving grace for the lecturers. The other lecturer was focused on Olympic history and was interesting for the first ten minutes, but after that worked the same as a double-dose of Nyquil for me. What the hell, one can always use a short nap on a cruise, right?!?!? The other highlight of our cruise was the Starlight Lounge, which I have commented on above. Read Less

My wife and I wanted a "special" trip for our 50th anniversary. We have been cruising for 40 years now and enjoy the experience. We elected to go to Hawaii and wanted a round trip cruise. That fact limited us to only two cruise lines Princess and Carnival. The wife said to look at the trip as a celebration not a vacation. We thought since both lines belonged to the Carnival corporation the Princess cruise would be a little more upscale. We chose a Club Class Mini-Suite and air transportation arranged by Princess. The Club Class upgrade included Priority Boarding, I expected the same benefits as Carnival's Faster-2-Fun boarding. Not so, just a different check-in desk. No priority room preparation, no quick luggage delivery, no priority on excursions, and no speedier disembarkation. I'm sure Princess has a target cliental. If that is the case, my wife and I do not fit the criteria. As I said we were celebrating 50th years of marriage and are not all that young. However, we are young at heart, able to walk, like to smile, and do not believe the way to elevate your social stature is to belittle the ship's staff. We found a majority of the passengers were not smiling, used a cane or walker, were rude, and ready to complain about any topic. There were some great things on the ship in spite of the depressing overall attitude of many passengers. The Club Class dining venue was a shining star of service and attitude. Our cabin steward was excellent and kept the cabin in pristine order at all times. Maybe our expectations were just set too high. We expected to "Come Back New". We came back looking for a "Fun Ship". Read Less

There were four or five occasions where our toilet wouldn't flush. Tried calling Passenger Services but they never picked up so I called the room steward. Problem was fixed in a reasonable amount of time but it's unfortunate that it happened at all. Also there were a couple of times the hallway near our cabin and the area outside Explorers Lounge had a strong sewer smell. Our head waiter David took excellent care of us. Our Jr waiter Angie was outstanding also. We enjoyed all the dinners we had in the Michaelangelo dining room. Horizon buffet had lots of good food. Sometimes it got a little busy but we could always find a table. Security check at embarkation was a long line but the rest went well. Disembarkation went well. We enjoyed most of the entertainment staff especially Scottish Ken. Also we had fun with the Entertainment director Gary, Jovi, DJ11 and Jerry. Our balcony cabin was decent (B606) and well kept up. We had been on another cruise line in the Caribbean and wanted to see Hawaii again. We found the Princess cruise online the booking process was very easy, the cruise was 15 days from LA as compared to 7 days from Honalulu. All in all princess was a car better deal. The Ruby had been recently updated and we had no issues with our room, the cabin was well kept by the steward. We enjoyed eating in the dining room as often as we were able the food and service was great. The buffet was good and we are there on port days so we could have more shore time the buffet coffee was weak but the fresh brew In the international care was an improvement for 2 bucks a cup the pastries are free and the almond croissants and blueberry muffins should not be missed. In the pool area there is a pizzeria, I am from the NY area and am a bit of a Pizza snob, the thin crust was excellent and available 11 to 11 daily. The princess tours were early below average, our first tour to waterfalls on hilo was awful.later we booked a Roberts Hawaii tour through excursions group which was a Huge improvement. As a whole considering everything we will certainly travel with princess again the staff was great and the food was very good.(I am back home now and will be dieting so my clothes will fit again) Read Less

Every year I cruise with princess, the cruise goes downhill a step each time. Things that were no charge now have an extra fee-deluxe hamburger now $5 extra, they have started to add pay extra items($20-30 each extra) to the bottom of the menu because the selection of items on the menu in the main dinning room isn't very good hoping people will get to the bottom and see nothing really good and order those extra pay items. Many of the windows in the public areas are so dirty that you can hardly see outside. This was the first ship I have been on that closed the outside decks way too much. Even when the wind wasn't too strong they still closed the front of the ship so you couldn't walk around the ship. The selection of items at the buffet on Lido deck was poor. Pasta and chicken. Although breakfast was good. Many days at lunch we walked thru and found nothing that looked good. They did have the fasted internet of any ship we have been on. If you are a non-drinker, like us, they discriminate against you. Being elite status they give about $80 of alcohol drinks (mini bar in room, free wine tasting, captain party, etc) but for nondrinkers they offer nothing. We were told we could exchange the mini bar for a soda package or smoothies before we sailed but on board we were told that wasn't true. They did offer to exchange it for a bottle of water. Seemed like there was too many workers with an I don't care attitude. Everything evolves around drinking (because they make a lot of money on drinks) and you can get free drinks at various times on board. (at the art auction, Effy jewelry, champagne water fall night, etc. The arts and crafts activities were very limited in number and you had to get there way early if you wanted to participate. For us embarkation was easy. We arrived around noon and walked right into the ship. I did hear of others who said it was their worst embarkation. Over all the ship looks pretty good for as old as it is. Read Less

We are about to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and wanted to do something special. We flew to Hawaii 13 years ago and spent two weeks on Maui and Kauai. We like cruising but have never been on a cruise over 7 days. We thought it would be fun to cruise out of Los Angeles instead of flying this time. We booked a Club Class mini-suite accommodation. The embarkation process was a delight - efficient, speedy, the best experience we've had on a cruise line to date. We loved our room (described below). Our cabin steward was friendly, attentive, accommodating. He kept our room clean and our ice bucket stocked. We never experienced any toilet issues but unfortunately other passengers did. Club Class anytime dining was a special treat. Service was excellent, efficient and timely. Lots of delicious menu selections including chateaubriand, filet mignon, prawns, lobster, beef wellington to name a few. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and was constantly checking to make sure we liked our meal. Bar service was good. Alcoholic beverages were reasonably priced compared to other cruises we've been on. Overall the variety of entertainment was very good and there was always something to do. Unfortunately, we had unusually cool weather this trip. The pools were closed for the first 3 days of the cruise and we had fairly rough seas the second day. This put quite a damper on the outdoor activites. Time in the Hawaiian ports was too little but the 10 days at sea it took to get there and back was way too long. I would suggest flying to Hawaii and cruising around the islands if you like a cruise experience. However, I much preferred the 2 weeks we spent on the islands previously and wish we had flown again. I didn't come home feeling I had a Hawaiian vacation at all with our sight seeing limited by bad weather and lack-luster shore excursions. I booked our excursions ahead of time and wish I had waited till we were in Hawaii. I could have avoided being committed to an excursion despite the bad weather. Hilo waterfall and botanic garden excursion scenic but drenched in rain. Pali coastline excursion very disappointing. The Pali coastline road was closed due to a mudslide that occured the previous November. Why offer this exursion? Waimea and fern grotto the best excursion of them all. Haleakala excursion a bust. Road a bus up to top of mist enshrouded volcano. Couldn't see a thing. Why not cancel this tour on such a day? Maui Ocean center nothing special - suggest avoiding. Avoid the jewelry store. (I know. Who is foolish enough to buy jewelry on a ship but I found a piece I really liked). Store manager didn't follow through as promised with warranty information. Disembarkation the best we've experienced yet. Organized, timely, efficient. Didn't crowd everyone into a small area or force us to walk down crowded steps. Good control of crowds. Took airport shuttle provided by Princess and got to airport 3 hours ahead of flight. Would agree that this is definitely a cruise frequented by older adults. While many were disabled, the majority were active and lively. Overall would recommend this cruise based on food, service, entertainment. If you want a true Hawaiian experience, fly to the islands instead. It's hard to experience paradise just a few hours a day on a stop over while cruising. Read Less

This was a fifteen day cruise. There were many days at sea.The ports in Hawaii are all beautiful. I did grow weary of the days at sea on the way over. We had a two bedroom suite, not as spacious as it has been on the other cruise lines. The ship itself is starting to show a little bit of age but is still in good condition. The theater was always crowded and if you arrived less than half an hour before the performance it was nearly impossible to get a seat. I believe this was true for both shows. For suite guests they have a new program, at least a new program to me, called Club Class. Part of the da Vinci dining room is set aside for suite guests, the service was very good some of the best I've ever had. The ports were all good and I even enjoyed Ensenada. I think that Princess is the only cruise line to offer selling form LA to Hawaii and back. Read Less

The service was extraordinary and the staff bent over backwards to accommodate your every need. Loved the ship, cabin, staff, food, activities, etc. So much to do on the days at sea that they flew by as we enjoyed participating in whatever we could manage to fit into our very busy schedule!! All the ports we visited were wonderful and we were most fortunate in having calm seas and beautiful weather throughout the trip. The entertainment was exceptional-especially the production shows along with all the other performers who took center stage as well as in the explorers lounge. Wanted to go to Hawaii with our granddaughters. This is our third cruise on the Ruby and I have to say since our last cruise on Princess, the food has returned to it’s past excellence. The MDR staff we had were exceptional. Not sure if this was because we had the girls with us or not, but we had amazing service. This is the first time we had come in contact with the kids program and both granddaughters (8 & 17) were very happy with their experience. They really loved the whole cruise. We were told by many, that Princess was not a good line to take kids, but I disagree. I have absolutely no complaints about Princess and the Ruby, if only some passengers would up their game and realize they are not the only persons on earth. We were able to have my daughter son-in-law-law come aboard pre-cruise for a Bon Voyage visit, they had never cruised, so this was an excellent opportunity for them to check out our trip. The staff was also very attentive and kind to them also. We have never been disappointed with Princess Cruises. We did not go to all the shows, but what we did see, we enjoyed immensely. The cruise director was quite engaging and friendly. And he had a great crew to back him up. Our cabin attendant just got on the ship the same day we did, so he was extremely attentive and friendly. The staff at the International Cafe were all very friendly, not a bad one in the group. We also got amazing service in Vines. I have to admit, on this cruise I did not run into on crew member that looked pain or over their job. They all made eye contact and had a smile. Due to bringing guests onboard for the Bon Voyage we were allowed to check in first, so embarkation was extremely smooth. Got to say though, disembarkation was quite a bit slower, they were very behind in timing, as we had a ride waiting for us. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was pretty cheap and embarked from the west coast. We love cruises that are more than 7 days. Hadn't been to Hawaii in a few years. When we cruise we're essentially onboard for the boat ride, we don't spend hardly anything onboard... we like to go cheap and go a lot. We are Elite level cruisers on Princess, Royal and Celebrity. OK, Ruby Princess surprises: Positive Surprise - touch your card on the panel and the stateroom door unlocks, no more swiping the magstripe. Positive Surprise - Stateroom TV is huge, maybe 40" diagonal, and its HD. There are tons of free TV Shows and Movies, good ones, all for free ON DEMAND 24/7. Positive Surprise - we actually found a hut tub that was HOT, unbelievable! Its the one way aft on deck 17, and bonus... no kids allowed. Positive Surprise - We were able to go for the entire length of the cruise without going to the main dining room once... huge plus since it wastes so much of one's time. Negative Surprise - they've changed the whole internet thing. The new thing is "Medallion Net". Now offers daily service which really works better for handheld devices. They heavily favor it, to the point that they've made the "minutes" plan extremely hard to use, error prone and confusing as possible. Get this, whenever you log off the internet you have to type in your credentials again, then go through 3 pages of stuff where you say Go Online on each page. I used up all the minutes on my plan, so I wanted to start to use my wife's plan (we both get 250 minutes for being Elite). Their software would not allow me to switch to the other plan on the same device, insisted I sign up for a daily plan. I couldn't even get to my shipboard account without signing up for more internet. So here's the logic, lets give our crappiest alternative away for free to our best customers! Negative Surprise - Ruby is larger than the Grand Princess, a ship that we love and have cruised on at least 6 times. We really felt crowded on this ship. For Trivia and any sort of entertainment in the Explorer's Lounge, they routinely set up several rows of chairs at the back of the room to attempt to accommodate the overflow. Theater was jammed most every night. Negative Surprise - The demographics on this one... too many MAGA hats, I mean it was spooky. Nothing Princess could do about that just, be prepared. End of surprises... We probably would NOT do the Ruby Princess again because of the crowdedness. While onboard, we decided that we've pretty much exhausted the Princess thing on the west coast and are planning on cruising out of Florida for a while on Royal and Celebrity. Read Less

From the time we got to the port, checked in, went through security and boarded the ship, to the 15 days onboard and the disembarkation, everyone was friendly, helpful and made it very easy for us as first time cruisers. The variety of food offered in the buffet was great, and while there were a few options that were over cooked, they were far and few between. The bar personnel were beyond great, so was the international coffee group. The photographers were all great and went beyond our expectations in getting the great shot. Entertainment was great, and while we didn't watch the movies under the stars at night due to it being too cold for us, we did catch a couple during the day. Room Service personnel were above anything we expected. When we called they would say to please give them 30 minutes, but we ALWAYS had our order within 15. Our room steward took the time to get to know us, our routine and even allowed us to request no turn down service at night as we were usually back in our cabin before he would do this. But he still would stop by to see if we needed anything and made sure we got our nightly chocolate. This trip has made cruisers out of us and we have already booked our 2020 cruise. Read Less

Chose the cruise as part of our 50th wedding anniversary celebration. Princess staff graciously met us at LAX and settled us in a taxi for the ride to Long Beach for a pre-cruise overnight in the Long Beach Hyatt. Good comfortable accommodations, helpful staff and located convenient to walking around a harbor and downtown. Transport to San Pedro port and Princess embarkation were excellent. We had sailed the Ruby previously and were looking forward to repeating a pleasant voyage. The cabin was completely ready when we arrived brightened with new carpeting.Lacking was the Lotus Spa hair conditioner previously provided as part of the amenities for Elite Level passengers. Other Elite passengers noticed the absence, as they too didn't bring their own; an example of Princess trying to save a nickel. The only other cabin problem was the lack of hot water for showers on the last 3 days of the cruise, including debarkation morning. Calls to customer service resulted in only temporary fixes. On the positive side a broken spring on the room safe door hinge was fixed withing hours after reporting it. Were this our first Princess cruise, it likely would be our last because of irregular (one time wretched) food quality, apparent under staffing in dining rooms, and too many staff who don't acknowledge or initiate customer greetings. In anytime dining many dinners were well prepared, if overly salty. Probably the most wretched dinner I have had was a veal dish that had 2 slabs of meat with the consistency of a roofing shingle. In the same meal the dessert was a samosa consisting of tropical fruit and macadamia nuts accompanied by a mint dip. The samosa was like a greasy empanada, and the mint tasteless. The number of serving staff was deficient. Too many meals that started between 6:00-6:30 ended up taking 2+ hours, ruining evening entertainment plans. Lido deck server seemed smile less and conveyed a demeanor that suggested they would rather be elsewhere. Elsewhere, staff met the standards of our prior Princess experiences. Bar servers, especially in the Skywalkers Platinum/Elite lounge were among the best we have experiences. Passenger Services staff were thorough and followed-up on issues. On this category of ship you aren't going to find water slides and climbing walls. But, there are on-board activities to suite most interests. Why Princess continues the pretense of a dress code for dinner is beyond me. A man dressed in cargo shorts was seated in the Michelangelo dining room on a casual dress evening. I doubt that they meet the dress code for "smart casual." .And finding one's way around can be a challenge. Ship maps in public areas contradict each other, even other maps only a few feet away. Example, locations of laundromats. The entertainment was among the best that we have enjoyed on Princess with new stage shows presented by very talented singers, dancers, musical ensemble. In lounges, however, too many events ran over scheduled stopping time, thereby delaying the next program. We especially enjoyed the Walker Black Duo. We were less enthusiastic about Mary Simon, guitarist, who shared too much personal angst in her own compositions. We left midway in a second session. The party band Main Offenders seemed to mistake loudness for talent, perhaps to cover their singer's limitations. We enjoyed all of the comics, and the vocalist Teacake. Providing a delightful Pacific island musical ambiance were Tiki Dave & Leialoha. I was less impressed by naturalist Mark Harris, whose presentations lacked thoughtful development around their topic.Typically there were 3 sub-topics under a main topic. But, nothing tied them together to walk away with feeling, "Gee, I really learned something." We enjoyed all the ports. A helicopter ride on Kauai with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters was a highlight. I flew with them on the Big Island in 2005. They still set the standard of excellence for helicopter excursions. It was my wife's first; she didn't want it to end. Whale watching at Maui was disappointing. The company seems to have had a fixed area to cover. All that we can say is that we saw the backs of a coupe of whales. Later in the day a companion on a snorkel excursion reported that they saw quite a bit of whale activity at the other end of the bay. On the Big Island, the excursion to the lava fields was interesting, as we got a good impression of how the island was formed. Disappointing on the Honolulu harbor excursion was food quality. Vegetables seemed under cooked, and perhaps contributed to stomach distress felt later that night. Also excursion meeting arrangements were poorly handled in Terminal 11. Our group assembled on time, but were delayed 25 minutes in being shuttled to the excursion boat.It was difficult for several people with mobility disabilities, as there were no seats. A security supervisor chewed out one of his staff who offered "his" chair to a man much in need. We stayed on the ship in Ensenada. Since we have lived and traveled extensively in Mexico, a packing day was in order. After 4 sea days over to Hawaii and 5 sea days back, and several books read, we were ready to return home with good memories and several noted above that shouldn't have occurred on Princess and hopefully will not repeat. Debarkation through port facilities was smooth and well managed. Read Less

I did this cruise 2 years ago and had a great time. This time everything was changed. They said the ship was newly renovated but what they really did was add 100 staterooms. The result was less seating on the promenade deck inside. They also changed the menu which affected the dining rooms and the buffet. The quality took a dive with a less appealing menu and an addition of things like steak and or lobster or surf and turf added at the bottom at an additional charge. If lamb is not at the top of your hit parade, stay off this ship. The buffet had a good selection of fruits, melons and desserts but the entrees seemed to be left overs from the dining rooms. There where still additional dining opportunities at additional charge's but less because of less deck space to put them. I had the drink package ($1000 plus) but was still charged for the initial bottles of water that were in our stateroom when we boarded. It appeared there were less room stewards as well and if you were not out of your cabin during certain hours, you room was skipped until the next specified hours. I have sailed with Princess before and enjoyed it but was told , what we experienced was the new Princess way of doing things. I will not sail with them again. Read Less

We’ve sailed with Princess in the past and know we will get a high quality ship and experience. Our recent cruise from LA to Hawaii and back was no different. Beautiful ship, comfortable mini-suite, fun activities, terrific crew, and a bunch of food. It took 4 days to get to Hilo. We visited Hilo, Honolulu, Kauai and Maui. Then 5 days to Ensenada, Mexico and one final day to LA. The boarding and disembarkation processes were very smooth. All of the islands were beautiful & offered different sites. Hilo is full of volcanoes. Honolulu has Pearl Harbor and Luaus. Kauai has waterfalls and beaches where movies were filmed. Maui is the nicest. Nice downtown near the port with plenty of shops. Would recommend Kimos for lunch. Right on the Pacific, great fish tacos and a huge Ice cream cake desert. Ensenada was a disappointment though. Not much to see or do. Read Less

I wanted to see Hawaii. Husband does not like to fly, and this was a round trip Los Angeles. Embarkation was a breeze (got there at noon). We ususally do not check our bags and just carry them on ourselves. Usually going at this time, vwe only need to wait a few minutes and can drop the bags off in our rooms. First time on Princess - loved it! First time on long sea days, loved it! Seas were great. Loved the promonode walkway. Tiki Dave gave very informative talks each day on each island. Mark Harris naturalist gave great talks on the sealife each day. We did 5:30 pm traditional dining in Botticelli. Had very pleasant table mates (table of 6). Enjoyed the food every evening and our waiters were very attentive and enjoyable. In the mornings we dined in Da Vinci or Caribe Cafe. Da Vini was nice, service was good and food was good. I really enjoyed Caribe Cafe, food was great and we ate outside. Once ate at Pub, they had twice. It was a limited British pub style food. Food was okay and there was usually a line. Entertainment was okay. Enjoyed the comedian ( was a clean show). Productions were okay. Enjoyed 3 out 4 shore excursions I did. In Hilo - land of frozen fire. Very knowledgeable regarding the island. Did not see any firey lava volcanos, since there were none erupting on this trip. Saw the rainbow falls. Saw a good bit of the island. Saw my first in the wild sea turtle. Got a pic of a Fern in a old lava field. Enjoyable trip! The Oahu - was not happy with the excursion Tropical rain forest walk. It was listed as moderate over uneven ground. So was the previous excusion. Have been on a number of moderates with no problems. This one is not a"walk" .It is an uphill scramble over fist size rocks and roots to trip you up. Some of the guide's info was wrong and other areas- he did not know- but probably should have known. In Kauai, went To Waimea canyon and spouting horn. Very informative guide and a wonderful view of the island. In Maui, went to a wonderful aquarium. They only gave you 2 hours to tour it, really more time is needed to see it all. There was a good Hawaiian history exhibits that was kind of at the end that we wanted to see but did not have the time. In Ensenada, we just walked the first couple of streets, looking at the town. When we got back we saw a bunch of sea lions just off the bow . Neat! Debarkation was easy. We took our own bags off. Actually when we got to out departure area, they had released every one already. So it was quick- including customs. Loved the trip! Would definitely it again! Read Less

My cousin had said that they had good time on their last cruise . They came with us on this cruise . They also said that cruise was bad. Service was unfriendly . ship needs to be up dated . Carpets were worn out. My cousin room carpet was wet due to leak in ceiling. There also was a leak in ceiling in Crown grill. Getting on and off the ship went well and fast. my cabin steward and two bartender( Crooners Bar) were the only two that made my trip so what happy. Your dining staff needs more customer service skills very unhappy with the way we were treated. There was only one show. Your staff was unfriendly until the last two day. Why you ask is because they wanted to get a tip. They tried to be your best friend on the last two days. All smiles and talk to you like you were their best friend. Very unhappy with the service. We have gone to Hawaii on Princess before and had a great experience. We wanted to go again and explore more. We had Princess arrange our flight and travel to the ship. This went very smoothly. We did wait at the airport for about 1 hour because our flight arrived at approximately 10:00 a.m and embarkation was not until 1:00 supposedly. When we arrived at the Embarkation facility, it was very well organized and the lines were kept short. Princess has really refined this procedure. We originally sailed on the Ruby shortly after it was built (2009) and it was shiny and new back then. Even though it has gone in for refurbishment recently it appears most of this has been technology based. The ship itself is showing its age. There is some wear and tear in places. (sun fading in the rooms, wear on the wood on the chairs in the common areas). Not enough to make us unhappy but if you are looking for a bright, new ship, this one is not for you. We were in Baha 748 which was a rear facing balcony. I can't recommend this room enough! The balcony was larger than the traditional balcony and we had wake views for our sailing. The bed was marvelous and the bedding was luxurious. My husband is generally picky about his mattress and he slept well the entire time with no aches or pains. Our room steward was fantastic! We tipped him daily and really developed a relationship with him and it showed in the care he kept in our room. We did not access a lot of the entertainment but did go to the Piazza everyday and interacted with the cruise director staff. Jerry was a new staff member and he was very engaging. We really enjoyed him. We chose the early dining option in the Botticelli dining room and the food was very good. Our wait staff were not really engaging which was disappointing especially as the next section over had a very good server who was super friendly and great with his guests. I think you have the luck of the draw on this one. Our shore excursions were all private ones except the Adventure to Hana which we booked through Princess due to time constraints. We did an small plane flight above Kauai and found it the most enjoyable excursion we took. I highly recommend it. The vendor was Wings over Kauai. I would love to take this cruise again and will continue to cruise with Princess. Read Less

Arrived day prior to sailing and stayed at the Best Western, San Pedro. Great accommodations. Free shuttle to port next morning. Arrived at 11:00am and after clearing boarding formalities we were in the buffet enjoying lunch by 11:45am. Luggage in cabin at 1:00pm. We selected Any Time dining in the MDR shared tables most evenings. Did not wait once. Food and selection choice was good. Did not try the specialty restaurants as we were more than satisfied with what was offered in the MDR. Drink selection and service in the bars and lounges was excellent. The nightly shows were very good, especially the guest artists who included Teacake and Bryan Cheatham who were amazing. Big shout out to Gary Golding, Cruise Director, who kept the entertainment bubbling throughout the cruise. Gary and his staff were very interactive and provided lots of laughs and fun filled events. Also enjoyed music in the lounges provided late into the evening. We were unsure as to whether we would enjoy the sea days on this cruise but found that it worked out well with lots of activities and also down time on deck. The weather was good after the first two days at sea which were cool and cloudy. Ship never felt crowded. The islands of Hawaii were beautiful. Took excursions in the four ports of call. Most enjoyable was the snorkling trip to Molikini Island and Turtle Bay by Zodiac. We swam with turtles who were as inquisitive of us as we were of them. On our way to the island we saw pods of Humpback whales. The skipper of the boat took us within a couple of hundred feet of the whales as they rolled and swam by us. The highlight of our trip. Overall, an excellent vacation. We met some wonderful people and we look forward to our next cruise. Read Less

Celebrating our 50th anniversary -- always wanted to cruise to Hawaii! Long days at sea -- special!! I have to admit after reading a number of reviews of the Ruby I was unsure if we chose the right ship - so we decided to make the best of it. Which we did - sure it's not perfect but so much of what I had read seemed to have been fixed or I just didn't notice. Flew in the day before staying in Long Beach at the Hampton -- the service and room was wonderful. Great area with small restaurants right across the street. Got a Lyft to the port the next day which took over a half hour. Embarkation was disappointing as I felt like they were herding cows -- "go there, go here" and some of the workers were rude even yelling at us for going where we were told to go!! So it wasn't a good start. Disembarking was better but they need more porters as my husband had to go outside the terminal to get someone to help with the luggage. We had a balcony room on deck 10 -- the balcony was the biggest we've ever had. The room was very nice/clean - closet was huge. Lots of room to store things. The BED was the most comfortable we've ever had on a cruise. Our room steward was so helpful and kept our room clean daily -- and our sheets were changed at least three times during our 15 days onboard. Food was the most disappointing - only ate in the dinning room four times -- food wasn't anything to write home about so we ate at the buffet that way we could try some things and then go back to get what we liked. The service in the dinning room was great but unfortunely very slow getting the food out. Service in the Horizon Court (Lido Deck) was very good and attentive. There was alot to do onboard - some of our highlights were -- Mark Harris a Naturalist who had so much to share about the ocean, birds, etc. The Walker Black Duo - a husband/wife team who did a fabulous job night after night singing in different lounges. Enjoyed a number of movies "under the stars" -- they provided blankets, popcorn, pizza and cookies!! They ran a number of movies and concerts during the day too. Shore excursions -- Hilo - Volcanoes National Park - Kilauea -- so worth the trip. Never heard of this before but there was a free shuttle to Wal-Mart!!(I believe it was provided by Roberts Hawaiian Tours.) After our tour we jumped on the shuttle (10 minute drive) to purchase souvenirs and macadamia nuts! Oahu - Island Safari Jeep Tour -- wow!! A 6 hour private tour of the island. Our guide was Sean who had a great personality and certainly knew the island. For lunch we stopped at Giovanni's food truck and ordered the most amazing garlic shrimp! Kauai - Journey to Waimea Canyon (Roberts Hawaii tour). Nani was our bus driver - very entertaining and knowelable. Waimea Canyon is a must see - Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Maui - Whale Watching Tour - so cool -- humpback whales. After the tour we stayed in town (which has a lot of little shops) then took the tender back to the ship. Ensenada - disappointed that the ship had to stop here. We did take a shuttle to town - not impressed at all! Walked back to the pier and were glad to get onboard. So overall our cruise onboard the Ruby was "special"!! Read Less

We had an option for a cruise up to 15 days so took this one because we had not been to Hawaii since 1989 and wanted to go back. We had a balcony which I highly recommend as it makes all the difference and I am a person that gets sea sick and thought it would be terrible but instead the fresh air was wonderful and helped. Ruby Princess was okay and the service was good, friendly staff. Food has really gone down hill since they open all the pay for restaurants. I would say it was Okay and I probably cook better at home, but it was still eatable. The cruise is LONG....and I mean LONG on the open waters.....We were not prepared for how long 5-6 days at sea without seeing land was. It was something we personally did not enjoy. There are those that absolutely love sea days and this is a great trip for those, but we are not those people. It seemed to us that after about 10- 12 days people start to get on each others nerves. ' Cabin was center ship and good. Bathrooms are always small but ours had a urine smell until I showered and tried to shave my legs and water overflowed onto the bathroom floor--after that happened the bathroom smelled fine so I am guessing that floor was never scrubbed. We were deck 10 cabin in the 400's but I can't recall which of those-nice central location. Ports were great but short...you only hit 4 islands and then off to the next the next day so spend the time as soon as you can get off ship. Shore excursions were good...watch for the one with the volcano tube thou as it is difficult for anyone with any problem to walk inside of those. When there it had water puddles which made it more difficult. And there is a hill and steps so having a bad hip or knee is not something that one should try though it states that the tour is easy. Take the tour but stay at the bus when they do the volcano tubes. Entertainment was really lacking. Big let down, and the movies under the stars are ones that have been out on dvd for months. Casino was nice-small and hard to get on machines but passengers were content to wait and casino staff was nice, warm and friendly. Maybe knowing what to expect I would go again, but 15 days is a long time and maybe knowing what to expect makes the difference. I know of people that go on this cruise every year. Read Less
