We had been on the Emerald Princess before, and enjoyed it. Since the last time it has been update and some areas remolded. Very nicely I might add. Biggest noticeable difference is the Market Place on the Lido deck. More open and bright, and the eating area seems larger and much nicer. We enjoyed the ports that we stopped at, all of them. On previous cruises there were some ports we did not enjoy. Our cabin was on the Lido deck, and it was so convenient to just walk down a hall and be out on the outside deck and close to the pools and Market Place. They also have a hamburger, hot dog, fries and chicken tacos eating place-all delish. Enjoy the open atrium area on deck 5,where they have the International Cafe and entertainment. You can get a salad, Panani, soup and desert while listening to music. The ports were lovely, warm and humid, but very enjoyable. Can't wait for our next cruise....... Read Less

We choose this cruise for the transit through the Pannama Canal. The commentary though out the cruise and in the canal was fantastic. Loved the Captains updates. We where very pleased with our inside cabin and twin beds. Our cabin steward was fantastic. The food on the other hand was mediocre at best. Beef was the the downfall each night it was served. I have never had a more boring prime rib. Could only finnish about 1/3rd of my NY strip. I love beef. Pancakes where ok. Mashed potatoes ok. Not enough veggies. Port were not bad but nothing I would want to go back to. Cartagena had the best food and architecture, I wish I could have enjoyed it, but the hawking street people where overwhelming. They would come at you two three four deep. You could not look at a building with out them thinking you were looking at them. Then they came at you. It was scary at times. Either get rid of these hawkers or Princess change port to Aruba, or Curacao. Read Less

Getting on the ship was terrible, people were waiting over 2 hours just to get inside the building. They were only letting in 2-3 people at a time. The overall appearance of the ship was good. The food in the upstairs buffet was not very good. The dinning room had 2-3 good nights to choose from and the rest were not so good of choices. It's a good thing they have salmon on the everyday side of the menu, which we had most of the time. The activities on board were limited, mostly trivia. Other activities were scheduled at the same time so you had to choose which one to go to.. Entertainment was poor. The ventriloquist was the highlight of the trip, very funny. Other were opera singers and musicians. The so called comedian thought that swearing was funny-it is just a turn off. The front end desk is no help if you have a problem. The trip thru the panama canal was to be the highlight of the trip. The photo guy made about 40 people mad when he moved them all away from the front rail of the ship so he could take a couple of photos to sell. Some had waited there over an hour just to get the best view going thru the locks and when made to move at the last minute they didn't have much of a view. It shows that princess cares more about money than passengers. Princess makes millions but still tries to make a couple of extra dollars by selling a couple of photos than about passengers who paid a lot extra to see the canal. The internet was good but the windows in a lot of public rooms were so dirty that is was hard to see through. Most of ports of call had nothing there, so the ship sold a lot of tours. I wouldn't take this ship thru the canal again. Read Less

Pros: *Excellent service *Lots of fantastic entertainment *Deep swimming pools with chairs kept back. *Real professionally made pizza. *Lido often had quality 5 star food and a good selection. *MDR service and staff was impeccable. Food was creative and served hot. Cons: *The ships layout is confusing. Even the staff got turned around. *Food in the MDR usually lacked quality cuts of meat. *'Unhappy Hour' still persists. No two for one drinks plus a dollar. *Good tables for two should be standard. The MDR's are poor and 'too crowded'. *Coffee is tepid, insipid coloured water! Who would serve that in Central America? *There are 4 pools. Only a smaller spa one is designated just for adults? *Shore excursion to the Masaya Volcano is a mistake; don't go. Closing Comments: Formal night is something to behold. There were people showing up wearing sweat pants and other apparel equally repulsive. It's amazing someone who wanted to experience fine dinning with table cloths, cutlery and service etc., would be that disrespectful. Putting the staff in a position to ask them to leave is awkward although, walking the plank should be justifiable. Special thanks to Pianist, Kory Simon. This artist is better than any super star. Special thanks to the Violinists; fabulous performances. Special thanks to Head Waiter, Valentine N. and the Professional MDR Staff. I've submitted this post in conjunction with listening to other experienced cruisers on the voyage who informed me that elegance is slipping on too many cruise ships. Read Less

First off if you are handicapped this ship is impossible to get down the corridors with a scooter or wheelchair once the housekeeping puts their carts out in morning which lasts all day .My wife needs a scooter to get around which we had to leave by the elevators until late at night after housekeeping was done ,which meant she had to walk from elevator area to room . I have never been on a ship with no couch in the cabin (12 SHIPS) which also made it difficult for my wife .Must get a mini suite ,I had a balcony .Ship was clean except their were stains on floor and chairs on the balcony also out there the fire sprinklers were so rusty on my balcony and my adjacent ones ,I hope they functional. Food dinner menu was limited .and unless you are Andrew Zimmerman you might enjoy the choices offered .Breakfast in dining room or buffet not impressive. Buffet was limited also with the 2 end hot tables ,one having same thing every lunch and diner ,the other end was what I call off the wall food .Entertainment first 2 nights same entertainer who was horrible , one of the others I walked out on ,some were ok but were repeated (15 day cruise ).Ship on certain decks is weird cannot get across directly .Tours of the cities were not all that informative and made stops at one or two shops as part of tour that your could purchase things and not go out on your own .My waiter Rexy and his assistant were probably the highlight of my cruise ,they sang and told jokes every night .I have taken 12 previous cruises (RC ,Celebrity & Carnival ) ,this was my my most costly and unfortunately my worst .Never Princess again. . This was my longest ever cruise, at 15 nights aboard the Emerald Princess. I got to be reacquainted with the good, so-so, and bad in the 2+ weeks. Embarkation was a nightmare. The inbound arrival was 5 hours late in disembarking. Check in actually stopped, as they had no place to put anymore people without violating the capacity for the fire escapes. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles vendor staff made very few announcements, and what was mad was in that condescending and shouting tone on the PA. After 3 hours of waiting, we boarded to find they didn't keep the dining room open, and that pushed everyone to the buffet. The captain apologized and issued all of us a voucher for $12.00. Being a Panama Canal cruise in early December, the median age was in the 70s. This is either good or bad, depending on your perspectives. The pools were never full, plenty of deck chairs, and never a line for dinner after 700pm! There were plenty of underused spaces on board, so finding a place to chill and relax was NEVER a problem. The Emerald Princess hides her 3000+ guests very well. The Sanctuary up front never seemed to have more than 10 people, regardless of the time of day. The rate is $20 for a half day, and $40 for a full. Great service and the staff will move you from sun to shade as you wish. Princess needs to fix the dreaded nylon curtain situation in the showers. My curtain had mold growing on the bottom. It was addressed immediately and replaced. Crown Grill was excellent, and worth the $29 upcharge in my opinion. The filet mignon was almost butter smooth to cut through! Service was spot on, with the waiter and maitre d checking in frequently. We had anytime dining, and had no issue getting a table for 2, or sharing. If we had a time factor to consider for a show, we let the waiter know in the beginning, and always made it out on time. The cruise staff was great, and truly seemed to enjoy their jobs! On a side note, this cruise did not push BINGO BINGO BINGO every hour like some lines (you know who they are)! [ ] There was a medical emergency on board after leaving Cartagena. Early in the morning a request was made for guests with a certain blood type and donor card to give blood. Mid morning the captain advised we would be diverting to Kingston, Jamaica and offload the ill person. About 2 hours later it was announced their situation was critical and they would be evacuated by helicopter. The crew was excellent on how this was handled! They had obviously trained for this before. Disembarking was rather painless in Ft. Lauderdale. Many were worried about a repeat of embarkation, which didn't happen. I purposely waited to write my review of this for a few days and let my thoughts and views not be so negative. Sadly, it wasn't the standard that I hold of Princess. It was obvious towards the end of the cruise when the staff started mentioning the guest comment cards and reviews. I don't believe in that type of implicit bias. I would have to think a little harder before I would sail on the Emerald Princess again. Read Less

Our 20th cruise with Princess, 20 days on the Crown in January/Feburary 2019, was one of the three best we’ve taken with this line, thanks to the creative activity and entertainment options on board. (You can read my review here on CC). Our 21st Princess cruise, through the Panama Canal December 3-18, was, on board at least, pretty much the worst. We felt like second-class citizens because of the way we were coerced and manipulated by the cruise line and its employees. The problem: we chose late-sitting dinner at 7:30 p.m., which meant if we wanted to see the main Theatre show, we had to do so at 6:45, which meant getting ready for the evening earlier, which meant eliminating the advantage of eating later. To add insult to injury, the post-theatre amusements we so enjoyed on our winter Crown Princess cruise – when they showed up at all – were scheduled before nine p.m., meaning we could stop eating and go, or just not see these shows at all. The solution: “eat in the buffet or go to Anytime Dining;” in other words, change my evening arrangements to suit Princess and, I’m thinking, save the company money. Well, no thanks. I can find other cruise lines where this nonsense is absent. But wait, could I find out before final payment date what the show times will be? In a word, no: all decided a few weeks before sailing, on board, not by head office. Good old Princess couldn’t have designed a better way to alienate later diners if it worked on it for months. Anyone who dined at 6:15 or later was similarly afflicted. But back to the cruise. Only one of the six ports – San Juan del Sur – was new to us, but we took Princess tours at all but Puerto Vallarta. Detailed information about these excursions was sorely lacking; neither, on a ship filled with seniors, was there nearly enough information, on board or on line, about the walking challenges of the various tours. The tours themselves were as expected: some pretty good, some very good. By the end of the cruise, hordes of passengers were sneezing and coughing, in part the result of going from buses cooled below 70F to the outdoors with temps and humidity near 90. Back on board, the food was hit or miss. The World Fresh Marketplace (aka Horizon Court) has been reorganized, for better or worse being debatable. The pizza, Salty Dog burgers and ice cream bar continue their good quality and service. In our dining room (Botticelli), appetizers and desserts were excellent, but main courses ranged from pretty good to pretty bad, as in too dry, overcooked, or too bland. Service in the eating places, bars and lounges was excellent; our room steward, as usual, was a gem. Entertainment was like the food: hit and miss, but generally mediocre. The seven-piece Princess Orchestra was outstanding, as was singalong crooner Kory Simon. But the production shows featured some poor casting in tired productions. The “fly-in” entertainers were, on average, not of the quality one would expect. (Or maybe I’m wrong on that: Princess offered cabin fares below $1,000 for this cruise; you do tend to get what you pay for. The Cruise Director (whose name escapes me) was at least an accomplished actress, deftly playing the role of clueless airhead. Her staff did most of the work while she mostly told very bad jokes. Daily activities showed almost none of the creativity or interest we found on our previous Princess cruise; trivia and bingo headed the daily list. An enrichment speaker did well presenting facts anyone could find online. So, overall, a disappointment, particularly for veteran cruisers like us. If we can’t be sure we won’t be treated like second-class citizens on this line, we’ll give up the free laundry and cruise with other companies. Read Less

My wife and I had planned to take this cruise for years but she passed away in 2015 and only recently was I able to find my cruise mate and best friend. We had planned this for about six months, maybe with too high of hopes. From the time we arrived at he ship it began; an extremely long wait with no place to sit down and virtually impossible to get to a rest room, a major issue with people 68 and 73 years old with disabilities and we had 'expedited boarding'; what a bad joke. once on the ship we experienced very poor service, extremely over-amplified music (and I use this term in its broadest sense), it was almost impossible to communicate with the representatives at the pursers desk due to the noise and then having to listen to 'hip-hop and rap' all over the ship and in the theater; a truly wonderful experience for all the senior citizens aboard. The club class dining was great service but the quality and selection of food on the menus has crashed since Carnival bought Princess. The ports and docking facilities were abysmal and I hope to never see them again except the Panama Canal which was a great experience. While exiting an 'automatic door' on deck 15, I was slammed on the outside of my left knee and when I reported the incident the security and medical departments could care less. We later heard from other passengers of at least three similar incidents at the same door. When I finally decided I should report the incident when I realized it could happen to others I was required to fill out a 'financial responsibility form' in medical, which I tore up and left there, spending the rest of the cruise in serious pain. The bed was uncomfortable and split into two parts at night. We notified the cabin steward and the pursers desk without any resolution. We also found what appeared to have come from someones nose stuck to the inside of the top sheet one night and the same the next night on the bed spread; totally disgusting. Leaving the ship was a nightmare, again long lines poor direction causing us to miss picking up our luggage before entering customs and having to contact an officer to go back and retrieve our bags; this has never happened in the thirteen cruises I've been on. We were extremely disappointed and even though I have 'platinum status' with Princess I doubt I'll go back again. Besides experiencing the new locks on the Panama Canal it was a waste of over $10,000.00 that we'll never get back. Read Less

Aloha 537. Upgraded from Riviera big mistake. Cabin was noisy with walls and bed vibrating. Cabin situated next to machinery( air conditioning?) moved to another cabin but had to vacate that one at FL. No explanation given although we asked if problem was solved. Cruise overall was very good. Orchestra in theatre TOO LOUD especially drummer and pianist. Anytime dining in DaVinci with Oscar excellent. Nothing too much trouble. Stewards in all 3 cabins very good. Callie and the entertainment crew kept us entertained all day and evening, such energy. New carpets in corridors and Marketplace furniture etc great improvement after dry dock visit. Internet fast most of the time and all wired up for Medallion class. Ate in Curtis Stone, Steamers and Planks - all excellent but too much food! Ports of call varied with many excursion choices. We would cruise this itinerary again although then it wouldn’t be the first time for the Emerald to go through the new locks of the Panama Canal. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the full Panama Canal transit. We were on board for the first 15 days from LA to Ft. Lauderdale. The ports visited were Puerto Vallarta, Huatulco Mexico, San Juan Del Sir Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, full transit of Canal, Cartegena. This was our 12th Princess cruise and as usual embarkation was smooth and efficient. We enjoyed all the ports and took several excursions - more on that later. The ship had just come out of dry dock. Our balcony cabin was fine except that the balcony had numerous paint chips/rubber pieces all over. In order to get the door to lock we had to slam it. Numerous problems with elevators, laundry facilities didn't work, problem with toilet that was resolved fairly quickly. The food was just ok except for the Crown Grill which was excellent both times we went. Buffet was lacking in selections the few times we ate there, dining room ok, enjoyed the triple smoked burger at the Salty Dog Grill, wanted to go to Planks for the BBQ but was closed the several night we wanted to go. The service in dining room was wonderful, our sever was organized, efficient and very funny. We ate about 1/2 our dinner meals there. Bar service in Crooners was excellent as well. Entertainment was not bad, the production shows ok, comedian was fine, several guest entertainers were fantastic and a few others I could have skipped. Crooners pianist fine, the party band was ok but the other 2 entertainers were ones we checked out once and that was it as didn't enjoy. The destination speaker was outstanding, the other speaker Leo Rossi who talked about his time in rock/roll was interesting. The really ugly part of the cruise were the shore excursions and the staff there. Our Puerto Vallarta excursion was a big disappointment as we only did 1/2 the tour and spent the last 15 min listening to our guide give a sales pitch for his products. We complained to desk and asked for a 50% refund. It took 4 days to hear back and after several lies they refunded us 25%. That was bad enough but the whole fiasco that occurred with the Costa Rica excursions is unforgivable. Except for tender ports we have never met on board somewhere before getting off for an excursion. For some reason this cruise we had to meet in the Princess Theater each day BUT there was no organization, no stickers or tours sitting together. For Costa Rica they had 1 gangway open and lost control as we were all leaving for excursions in long lines, people merging in from all over. We were in the 4th row of Princess Theater - made it to our bus but had to wait over 90 min for everyone to get there due to fiasco. Many people stood out in heat for over an hour, tours were cut short because they started too late - just a general incompetence. People complained to the desk but nothing happened - no apology letter, nothing - no acknowledgement of mistakes or loss of control. Just ridiculous. So bad that for last week of cruise it was a continuing topic of discussion everywhere. I filed a complaint with Princess upon returning home, they responded but all I heard during phone call was excuses - not a real understanding or comprehension of what had transpired. Disembarkation was fairly seamless despite a bit of confusion with the transfer buses. Overall despite everything we enjoyed the cruise but don't think we will be sailing Princess anytime soon as this definitely didn't live up to expectations based on our past experiences. There are other cruise lines such as Celebrity that have better customer service in my opinion. Read Less

E733 Suite: Great view back of the ship. Suite class has free unlimited laundry service, exclusive great breakfast daily at Crown Grill, one time bar set up, large balcony/room Crown Grill and Share: food and service excellent Salty Dog: dissapointing Club class dining: excellent service, food menu is the same as regular dining room but it has additional one dish they cook in the dining room/not by table side, generally food is awful! Lido deck food: poor selection, poor set up, not a pleasant experience up there. Suite in room dining: still limited choices like sandwiches and burgers etc, better than regular cabin room service menu. Laundry service: slow, usually take about 36 hours Ship itself: average.... Entertainment: very limited, usually evening entertainment compose of solo entertainer in the Princess theater, lots of comedians and magicians! 15 nights cruise, had 3 production shows. Staff: good cabin steward, work hard...but there are little more than few that not working, like seeing one by our cabin sitting on the floor everyday..hiding away! As you will read from many other reviewers; this was "the worse" Princess cruise I have been on -- and I have been on many, many Princess cruises. Something was terribly wrong with 50% of the interactions on this cruise. To be fair, I would like to give you a balanced overview. THE GOOD: Our room steward "Randy" was THE BEST we have ever had. He should be training for Princess on how to take care of Guests. The International Cafe people were very friendly and helpful - but they need more staff for the service - everyone goes there. Two casino people really stood out (Hans and Mario) - they were very professional and helpful to guests (more on the casino later) I liked the new market place for eating and for the layout, colors and seating - the food -- that will be later too. The Crown Grill - excellent Chilean Sea Bass and steak for others. Best food and service. The fitness center - the dry dock brought mostly new equipment. I'm always at the gym on shore and the cruises - they did an excellent job here. And, there were 45+ people in the gym at all time -- just goes to show - if you build it, they will come ;) Traditional dining - good fish, nice salmon, excellent asparagus. THE BAD Customer service desk - clueless people, no help or service. It seemed that half the crew must have been new to the cruise industry and all the guest were the guinea pigs. And they were just plain rude at times. You would be talking with them about a problem - the phone would ring and they would cut you off and spend 5-10 minutes on the phone before coming back to you. Casino manager ( I won't mention names - I do have them, but it's not worth mentioning) shut the casino craps table down around 11 or `11:30 and forced everyone to leave - over and over - who does that? (more on the craps table under horrible) Drinks - every night the same thing at the craps table - hour to an hour and a half before they would come to ask if you wanted a drink. If you wanted one before that, you had to stop gambling and go to the bar to buy one. Why would they do that? The food in the new market place - average - and that is being generous. I did like their sandwiches for lunch. Food over all here was far below what you would normally expect from Princess Cruises. I will say their salads were fresh ! Traditional dining - this is the sad part - 50% of the time the meal was good, the other 50% of the time - I couldn't eat the food. The beef stroganoff - couldn't cut the meat with a steak knife - much less chew it. Braised beef - let's just call it braised fat. Their steaks - I wanted medium rare - it took them four times - each one was rarer than the previous one. People at my table were "mooing" because it was such a joke. The 4th steak was perfect. Their lamb - one bite was all I could do - so bad. The excursion for snorkeling at our 2nd port was nice - but the boat was way too small for the number of people who went on the excursion. THE HORRIBLE: Two main things stand out that really ruined this cruise. As others have said, the excursions were ruined for people and Costa Rica was the worse. Hundreds of people missed their buses because Princess wouldn't let you off the ship - seriously - they kept people in the Princess Theatre with no stickers or organization - when they finally let people out - row by row, dozens of buses had already left. So yes, hundreds of people missed their excursions in Costa Rica !! They reimbursed everyone - but it was the one big excursion I wanted to go on. People were standing in the heat of the day on the dock while they waited. Most excursions were cut in half for their time. Someone mentioned that this happened near the beginning of the cruise and people talked about it for the next week and a half - that is an understatement - people were furious - including me. I will give credit to Gary McNeil - he owned up immediately for all the problems and took full responsibility. Princess should be happy to have people like him. Craps table in the casino - okey, something is up with this and Princess needs to look into the issue. The table was "re-done" in the dry dock and new dice were added. 14 days of playing and every player lost every night. The dice would land and bounce at 90 degree angles. The dice would stop rolling and then "suddenly" flip over one more time. Many players there were commenting on what was up with the dice and table. We've played craps for years in Vegas and on cruise ships. NEVER have I seen the dice act so weird AND have 100% of the people loose at the table for 14 days straight. I'm not accusing them of anything - BUT - they need to look into this. We will not be playing craps on our next cruise with Princess. This is serious folks. FINAL WRAP UP: We did not come back "RENEWED" you will find from other reviewers, this cruise really hurt Princess's reputation in so many ways. Which is sad for me, I really liked them a lot until this cruise :( Read Less

This was a short 3 day cruise from LA to Vancouver. It is spring break so there were lots of young people and kids onboard, many celebrating special events like birthdays. We dined in both the Crown Grill and Share and the food was great. Service in the main dining room and the food seemed the usual Princes approach. There was concern expressed by someone that since the ship is heading to dry dock in Victoria that there would be less staff and poor food supply but that was certainly not the case. The staff told us that during the 3 weeks in dry dock, their jobs continue, as they must serve the 1000 construction workers who take up residence on the ship and work 24 hrs a day to complete the dry dock tasks. The only difference is that their days are shorter. On another note, Princess has made a decision to remove all the barrel chairs from the balcony and ocean view staterooms. I find this to be a ridiculaous move as do many others. I had disussed my concern with corporate relations and was told that if I ask for chai, I will get it. Many people on Cruise Critic had indicated that they had asked their stateroom steward and had been told that a chair was not available any longer. I did not ask the steward. I went to the Passenger Service desk soon after we boarded and asked for a chair. I happily got one within 1/2 hour of asking. I do have a bit of a caveat, though. This ship is heading to dry dock and maybe the few chairs that they may have available on board right now might disappear once in dry dock. Read Less

We chose a 16 day cruise to Hawaii to celebrate my wifes 50th birthday. The ship ( Emerald) is 12 years old but it was fine for our needs. Food: The buffet had choices and always found something to eat. The 24/7 cafe is very good as was the burgers and fries by the pool. We had a great time relaxing on the sea days to / from Hawaii. Great Pizza by the pool. Movies under the stars was great and food in general was good. Always a choice of options and waiters were always happy to assist and or change dishes as needed. Wine options are not great if you like sweet wine. 5 pools to swim in and always free space and not crowded. Gym is very good and plenty of space on the decks. The sanctuary is great if you need privacy. Dining room was very good but not excellent. Shows were ok but not fantastic. Crowd was too old to go to a disco but were always happy to go line dancing etc. All staff were friendly. Room attendant was efficient and serviced our needed. Ports in Hawaii were all good. We both had a great time and would go on Princess again. Read Less

Very, very good, the help was so great. Just loved our server and helper. I didn't take advantage of the entertainment but my husband and sister-in-law hit all the shows, even the small lounges and loved them all. We have been with Princess a long time and have made many trips with them and yes we would go again. We are now elite passengers and we love the extras that go along with that. Once again loved our trip as we usually do with Princess and will be sailing with you again. I also enjoyed the shopping aboard and got some very good deals. Another favorite of mine was the casino and I did very well with that too. See you on our next voyage!!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because friends of ours saw it online and wanted to go to Hawaii. We departed from San Pedro. Departure was great. Long Beach is lovely. We were on board in no time at all. Smooth sailing! Weather was not the best, very cold in California. Disembarkation was also not a problem. Princess does that well. The ship was not in top form. The hot tubs had barely any jet power and were very old - definitely time to replace them. The ship itself was fine but very dated and the furniture in the Piazza was old and torn and stained. The Explorer's lounge was actually disgusting and had stained chairs that had lost the padding in the seats. I could smell urine at times. There is very little room there and I found this true in the theatre as well. If you don't go 40 minutes before any show you won't get a seat. Still we were on a cruise so the basic run down state of the ship did not have any effect on our fun. I found the buffet to be overcrowded and we were herded into areas at different times and could never find any seats. The furniture here was old and sticky too. I did not like the vibe there. The pools were great. I was in them a lot. Clean and well kept. They were semi warm as well. Lots of room on the deck to sun. We really did not have to wait for chairs out there much at all. The entertainment staff were great. They had me laughing more than once; Cruise director Duke and Asst Director Mark were fantastic. Lots of fun. I miss them a lot. They were very interactive with the staff. Empara from Chile was so funny. She was really fun to interact with. The service was okay. Lucy in the Explorer's lounge was great. Our room Steward was good, but he looked rushed and not really too friendly. He gave good service though. The ports were amazing. I mean its Hawaii right? But Ensenada was fun too. We did a whale watch in Maui and that was fun. We did the tour of Pearl Harbour which was nice but I was not aware that it would be extra to tour Big Mo. Our cabin was not quiet. We were right under the lido - neptune pool, and next to storage mid-ship and we heard loud bangs very early and late. One night they were power washing the pool decks and it was very loud. The sideways inside rooms are wonderful though. Big, roomy and lots of storage. Overall the trip was fun. The dining rooms had good selections. The waiters were good but once again, seemed rushed. I had the overall sense that Princess is trying to cut back and even the International cafe seemed to have less choices, as did the buffet. Read Less

Excellent cruise again. Easy embarkation. Our suite was perfect. The food and service were perfect. Entertainment was top notch. Disembarking was easy and very quick. We loved being on the ocean for a total of 10 days. Really the only thing disappointing was that we were not able to get off the ship at the stop on Maui as it was by tender boat and my husband is handicapped so he was not able to get on the tender. However, we were able to watch whales and dolphins and seals from the ship which was wonderful. We received wonderful service from the staff on the ship and were always treated with extreme care and concern. The entertainment was great. The shows were Vegas quality. They are always packed but Princess does a good job setting aside seats for this disabled and their partners. We will try to do our future cruises with Princess. Read Less

We chose this cruise to travel to Hawaii. Being our first timebto Hawaii we wanted to see more than one island. At the time of this booking Princess was the only cruise line we could find that sailed round trip from California. We had a decent time but the entertainment onboard was awful especially the Atomic Party Band. The entertainment of various classes like Spanish lessons and ukulele lessons were awesome. The cruise ports were really good but not enough time at any port accept Honolulu. An overnight stay in Honolulu would be more than perfect. The crew were friendly and nice. The Casino was tight. Not a lot of winners. More losers than winners. Getting on and off the ship was a breeze. We Boarded at 12:30pm And was able to go straight to our cabin. It was good to be able to check into our room immediately. Great way to travel to Hawaii. Read Less

Had a great time & ready to go on another Princess Cruise. The only cruise line we have been on. We will book another cruise to Hawaii in the future. We needed more time in Hawaii to see more that we missed. The entertainment, staff, & rooms on Princess are the best so far. Everything from getting on embarkation to disembarkation is so organized. It’s truly an amazing experience to cruise. We will be on more in future with Princess. Another thing is the passengers are mostly nice and courteous. Many have been on 50+ cruises & several times Princess Cruise line. I asked a couple people their favorite cruise line & it was Princess. In addition, I have a 11y/o who has twice enjoyed the Kids Club. The staff takes care of the kids really well. Keeps them busy, & the kids really enjoy all the fun activities. This makes me feel like my kid is safe too. Read Less

To see four islands and cruise the ocean blue! I wanted to relax and see Hawaii with my spouse which we did but I expected there to be professional entertainment of a much higher level. I think BINGO was too expensive and trivia got boring. I did enjoy the chef demonstrations and all of the food. The game shows were fun. The Beach Boys guitarist should stick to music and forget comedy, that was not good. The big production at the end was not impressive at all, sorry. Thank goodness our room was near the exercise equipment, but charging for Yoga is not worth going. High end on-board prices for low end receivables in my opinion. The best thing was whale watching. The worst thing was the last second cancellation of our Kauai helicopter excursion which we looked forward to for months. The best part was we were with family and not alone. Read Less

OK, first of all this is our fourth cruise, our 1st on Princess. We booked this cruise to visit four of my sisters in the Islands. We've sailed on Norwegian, Celebrity and Disney. We flew into the L.A. area a few days early and stayed at the Crown Plaza in Redondo Beach, nice hotel and staff. Nice pier to hike around with good seafood to boot. We took an uber over to the Reagan Presidential Library and enjoyed it very much. Worth checking out in beautiful Simi Valley. The Emerald Princess was going for an 18 day re-fit at the end of this cruise, and it was very much due. I will commend the vessels maint. crew for constantly painting and varnishing whenever the weather permitted. I was told the buffet dining rooms were getting a complete makeover. Also, a new medallion system would be used for passenger access. Embarkation was a breeze, well organized, everyone was very helpful. The entire process took about 20 minutes and we were in our cabin. We booked very late so the best we could do was a room (E311) with an obstructed view on Deck 8. The room was not as big as the new cruise ships, but clean and well maintained. Bathroom and shower were on the small side but what I expected on a vessel built in 2007. Our cabin attendant Nester kept the place spotless the entire voyage. Although the view was obstructed you could still see the ocean going by. On the down side, since the window doesn't open the room can get a bit stuffy at times. For lunch we ate at the Horizon Court Buffet the first couple of days. You won't starve, but just your average fare there. About the 3rd day we started having lunch at Botticelli's on Deck 6 Aft. It was set up for open seating just for lunch and the food was better. For supper we ate mainly at Michaelangelo's and Da Vinci main dining rooms. The menu's between the two really didn't change much, so after three days at sea the food was not so good. I will say they know how to cook Salmon to perfection, but after many, many Salmon suppers I won't need to eat it again for quite awhile. One item that didn't sit well with me concerning the menu was the "Side Menu" with the higher end items (Maine lobster, steaks, ect), at an additional cost. We both loved getting our morning coffee at the International Cafe on Deck 5 Piazza for a small fee. And their freshly made sandwiches and pastries were always excellent. We had "anytime" seating for the main dining rooms and almost always sat with other couples and got to visit people from all over. I would say most of the crowd on this ship were in there 70's to mid-80's. A very nice group of people, we felt young being 56 and 65. We only took two of the offered excursions because we were meeting family on two of the islands. The whale watching in the bay at Maui was great, Humpback Whales that seemed to be everywhere in that bay. It was fun! There wasn't a cruise ship dock there so we had to us the ships Tenders. Added a few minutes getting off the ship, but no big deal and it was kinda fun. We took the wine tasting excursion during our stop at Ensenada, Mexico and absolutely loved it. Well organized and very smooth. They gave us two free bottles of wine and we couldn't be happier! We only attended one show the entire trip, for about ten minutes the first or second night. We were content sipping on wine and finding cozy spots on the ship to kick back and read. We probably won't do another Princess cruise based on the food issues. We just got spoiled on Celebrity. The crew on this ship went above and beyond to make you feel at home, we especially liked the "Main Dining Room Singers"! Disembarkation was smooth, we caught an uber to John Wayne Airport, no problems! We volunteered to give up our seats and ended up staying another day in Santa Anna, so we visited the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda. Another day well spent. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had nearer been to Hawaii. It lived up to our expectations. Was more than we could have hoped for. Crew & staff was extremely friendly & polite. We flew from the east coast & spent night at Double Tree in San Pedro. The next morning we got the shuttle to ship. Embarking was extremely quick & easy. As soon as we got on the ship our stateroom was ready, We were pleasently surprise at this. We had a balcony cabin and plenty of room for storage of all of our items. We had the second seating for dinner and were very happy they changed the time to seven thirty instead of the eight thirty we had originally signed up for. Our best meal was in the Crown Grill. We have never had a better meal anywhere, it should not be missed. The ports were great, even Ensenada, which at first we had no interest in. We look forward to our next cruise with Princess. An overnight at the San Pedro Double Tree made embarkation a breeze. We were onboard less than an hour after leaving on the hotel shuttle. The ship was beautiful and far exceeded my expectations as I was aware she was headed to dry dock after our cruise. Nothing in the public areas looked tired as I’ve seen on other lines that were headed to refurbishment. The food was hit or miss. Our first Dinner at Share was terrrific and encouraged us to book a second. If the food on the second night had been the first we would have not gone again. Polling of various dining companions netted about a 50/50 split on favoribility. Salty Dog was the same. We had ATD and never had much of a wait though we were happy to share. I did see people waiting who were only interested in a private table. Main Dining room food was pretty good with some real misses. Twice I ordered scallops that were seriously gritty. Food seeemed to start strong and trail off to the seemingly typical odd final night. This trip offered Sweatbreads and two mussel dishes on the last night. If you don’t eat either, makes for limited choices. The chef’s table was the best we’ve had on Princess. The experience blew us away - the creativity and the wow factor were both present and delivered an amazing meal. The shore excursions were pleasant. I didn’t find anything that knocked my socks off. During dinner after Hilo I discovered there were tours that would have been a better fit but the passengers describing them were very clear that the descriptions had not come close to matching the tour tour experience. One gentleman even went to tour services to ask they change the description to match so he would know what to expect! The casino was very friendly and paid well early in the trip. We saw several large slot payouts and talked to other big winners. We were able to play on the same cash we started with and casino money most of the trip. The last 3 days the slots tightened noticeably and the staff became appetjetic - it was nearly impossible to get a drink. The did seem to be an issue with crew hygiene as the voyage Dre to a close. There was one guy (I’ll withhold his name) that had body odor so bad it literally made you gag and it left a trail behind him. Needless to say we started limiting activities in that particular lounge. The teen program was very uneven and much was tolerated that surprised me. My child came home talking about kids vaping, swearing, openly discussing sexuality, etc. I get they are teens but somehow I was expecting a bit of positive direction to activities. There was even a physical assault (acknowledged by staff) that did not result in removal from the program for the aggressor. I do think that the environment should at least be safe. Based on this cruise we are looking forward to our next, but still will not hesitate to book on anothe line if we get the right deal. Princess has still not captured my complete loyalty. Read Less

This was a pleasant cruise that went smoothly and no major problems. The embarkation and the disembarkation was the smoothest EVER. Cabin was nice but I would look to upgrade for more room. Dining and Cabin staff were excellent. Entertainment was good but could not get into some of the Theater early shows. Activities were excellent. Service personnel were friendly and effect. Honolulu was a port that had lots to offer. One day was not a lot of time to see things. The other ports could have used an extra hour or two but it was acceptable. LA was an excellent city to explore before the cruise. We took a city tour before the trip and went to Santa Monica Pier after the cruise. Getting to the departure city a day before would be HIGHLY recommended. Many tours are available in LA. I will definitely be going on another Princess cruise. Read Less

Booking our r/t Los Angeles - Hawaii cruise was fairly spontaneous, through a deal we found through Expedia. This was our ninth cruise, and we tend toward Celebrity. Our experience on the Emerald Princess was largely quite good. In reading everyone's reviews, it's interesting how different people's impressions can be. As far as we could tell, the ship is in very good condition. All the common areas seem especially well kept. I will discuss our cabin below. I can only compare our Princess experience to other lines we've been on, especially Celebrity, so we were curious about the food. We were happy to have found the food served in the dining rooms to be very good to excellent. We didn't feel the need to pay for the upcharge dining as the included dining rooms were perfectly fine, with good variety. Buffet food was like typical buffet food. It largely wasn't bad, but not particularly memorable. I didn't care for the ship's layout, something you can't really do anything about. We missed having a walking track that circles the top deck. There is a little tiny one toward the back of the ship but 16 times around it equals one mile (boring). You also cannot circumnavigate the interior as you can on other ships; it's more of a linear layout. We're used to strolling around after dinner, up one side and back the other (especially on formal nights) and on this ship it's more fore-and-aft, repeated. Entertainment venues get waaay too crowded, quickly, especially when there is something going on in one of the lounges. And finding seats in the buffet area can be a frustrating challenge. Read Less
