Good itinerary inc. Rome/Naples/Sardinia, and whilst we are not anti-kids this was the first one outside the school holidays. Usually take a suite but prices were crazy, typically double what we normally pay, and P&O were still offering a suite at top price on the morning we sailed. Opted for E730 Superior Deluxe and it was great with the big end/corner balcony, and none of the horror stories about noise from the nightclub below or engine vibrations - there must be some very picky light sleepers who find this cabin a problem. Lots of familiar friendly faces in the crew who remembered us from previous cruises and were genuinely pleased to see us and chat and update us on the families, lovely. Food was generally good in MDR and Buffet at lunch, and lots of veg. choice, not all green beans as some so often point out. Galley tour and Brunch was good. Buffet not as frenetic as it can be and far less table reserving whilst one goes to the Buffet and one stays holding table - which takes too much time if tables are busy. MDR menu cycles are a bit repetitive, same cycle for a number of years, but with ten main course choices at dinner not an issue. Epicurean continues to be a delight, and on day one excellent value at £17 per person. Did three shows all good, "Phantom" singer, comedy pianist, and Astonish which was amazing, OK you can work out some of the illusions but not all, and I'm still trying to work out the 4 card trick you all take part in! WW2 talks are same/similar as in all previous cruises over the years, and are getting a bit long in the tooth, you will be c90 now to have been in service in WW2. Some new topics perhaps, still military, what about Falklands, and current armed forces? Dancing is not my love although the Leader of the Opposition loves it and I can get round the dance floor. Goran and Roanna who we have been with before are excellent, and with Roanna even I thought I could Cha Cha. Met some nice fellow dancers and "watchers". Wheelchair/scooters not as many as can be sometimes, and none were demanding special service/queue/lift jumping. Second time on Ventura this year and 6/7 times overall. Been on other P&O ships and all good but we like Ventura and Azura best - big enough to have everything but not too big, mind you we will give Iona a try. Booked two cruises on Board - best value. Took one P&O excursion to Amalfi coast and Pompeii excellent, two through Cruise Excursions Barcelona Gaudi and Rome under our own steam - dropped off at the Colosseum and picked up at St Peters, easy and Rome done leisurely. Captain was quite visible around the ship and approachable. Rescued three migrants halfway between Africa/Spain, an increasing issue I suspect, well done to passengers and Bridge spotting them. Embarkation and disembarkation seemed to be further tweaked and improved, very little waiting around or big queues. An excellent cruise as ever. Martin Read Less

It has to be said, we were apprehensive about the way Cunard is expressed as being for the upper class, the snobs and the like. well there are a few on board, but the vast majority were like you and me, worried hard for what we have and want to enjoy the fruits, as we grow older and being aware.... there are no pockets in a shroud and no safe in the coffin. The ease on which you board the ship in Southampton, is foremost. 20 minute's... your on and sorted. The first impression's are of it being dark and old fashioned, but believe me, this will soon grow on you. it is comfortable, cosy, in splendid art deco style and this ship has style by the bucket. The staff from the first step on board, are very, extremely curious. From the very first ,moment, everyone says hello, and it is not felt to be false. The rooms are small, same as all cruise ships, but these ships are Liners, not cruise. they cut through he water, the hull being designed to cut water, Blue Water! not sheltered sea's. Those who boat on the water will know. A small sailing craft will cut through the water, a small cruiser will need so much more power to make the same speed and efficient passage, therefore far more fuel efficient. I did not like the smoke she emitted at sea, but the fuel was visibly changed when near port. Back to the room's.... A much larger than average bed, memory foam and comfortable. The bed cover, in their coat of arms gives the right appeal and class of the company. It is not cheap and tacky, but refined and clearly announcing it is a Queen amongst ships. The bed pillows are pure class and comfortable, the welcoming half bottle of Champagne, a nice way to ease you into the Cunard scene and way of looking after you in style. Yes I liked it, but boy, how it grows on you! dining. Self service or waiter, from the first level into their dinning, at Red card ( first time clients) the Lido self serve experience is less fussy as to how you are dressed, and the food is (and i do not say this lightly) Excellent with a capital 'E'! No matter how fussy an eater you are, there is something to set you an happy dinning experience! On the ONLY REAL NEGATIVE! There is no drinks package! Wine packages, yes, but no all round package! Cunard could do worse than see how this basic to mid range package is run so successively as to try it on an MSC ship! It makes the cruise, and the ship money, but mostly, it en-hances the dinning and social experience. There is one other small negative, we found, but many commented on, throughout the ship at Lunch and Dinner. Broken by two good acts from off-board acts, the ships singers , can't sing! that may be cruel, but the one young lady had a terrific voice at and on certain songs, but screamed on others! ear peircingly. The standard was not good enough for such a ship, though it has to be said the shows were energetic, if poorly performed. but with Jugglers and a decent comic, plus a really good humorous classic 4 piece string quartet, were excellent and a joy to watch! Again Cunard should take an MSC cruise and see how to enthral their passengers, 9at least, that is our experience on 5 cruises and one other is booked for Cir-du Solie in early 2019. But! it has to be said, we will return time and again to Cunard. Once experienced, all others fall into the lower experience levels of excellence. Read Less

This was a one way fly cruise, 10 nights Southampton to Barcelona. I booked a one way car hire to Southampton, cruise only with Cunard and booked hotel and then flights back to Cardiff. It all worked really well and I would happily do something similar if Cunard reintroduce fly cruises in the future. I booked an extra suitcase on the flight (approx £30) so there was no issue with luggage. Embarkation/Disembarkation Very easy on both occasions, we were a bit early for our 12.30 boarding time and were on board and eating lunch in the Golden Lion by then. We disembarked in Barcelona at 9 am. Food/Dining We had a shared table of 6 on second sitting. Food service was great but our Sommelier was very busy. We got into the habit of ordering wine at lunchtime or the previous evening to make it sure it arrived in time for the food. We found something good on most menus, often more than one. I was a bit worried when I read comments about new menus but overall it was an improvement. We never ordered more than one soup/starter/salad but we never have so that wasn't a problem. We had starters as main courses a couple of times. We enjoyed the light bites at lunchtime in the Chart Room and room service breakfast, the time slots are now 30 minutes which isn't great if you have an early. We made it to the Britannia restaurant for breakfast and lunch on a couple of occasions, always had a table for 2. Entertainment Never a priority for us but we enjoyed a couple of the guests performers, particularly the Comedy String Quartet, it doesn't sound very promising but it was very funny. It was good to see The Royal Court theatre orchestra and Caribbean band Changez playing in the Golden Lion. One of our favourite evenings was the deck party. Cabin We had a metal fronted balcony forward on Deck 4. The cabin itself was fine but there was some noise from the crew pantry opposite. Itinerary We only took one ship's excursion, the others were easy to diy. Santa Margherita was probably the highlight for us. Summary Another great cruise on Cunard. Read Less

Although I have travelled with many different cruise lines, I had never cruised with Cunard and my partner had never cruised before. We sailed from Southampton, the embarkation very smooth. Our balcony cabin on deck 5 greeted us with a complmentary bottle of bubbly which we drank sailing out of the harbour. The cabin was a good size with reasonable sized bathroom. The toiletries were replaced daily. Great cabin, beautfully presented and tasting food with superb service from all staff. One day we had breakfast delivered to the cabin and we ate on the balcony as the sun rose. The entertainment was first class and the enrichment lectures very informative and entertaining. We used the gym daily and my partner had a treatment from the sports therapist which was very beneficial. We used the complimentary launderette several times which minimised the weight of the suitcase. Special thanks to the Chief Engineer for making my partner's first cruise unforgettable. Read Less

Expected a top of the line cruise and for the best part not dissapointed. On par with Celebrity cruises that we have done in the past. Having to dress up with a Jacket every night after 6pm got a little tiresome especially when it ruined a 20s Dress up night. If you love Ballroom dancing this is the cruise for you. Food is great even in the Buffet restaurant. The abundance of quality juices for free in the Lido restaurant at any time is very welcomed. Best entertainment by the ships singers and dancers that we have ever seen, quality westend type of performances. Lots of costume changes and great choreography. Entertainers on for just that cruise very high quality. Liked the guest speakers like Sir Michael Parkinson. We stayed in a Deluxe inside cabin that was set up for mobility challenged guest it was huge and a real treat to come home to . Missed the luxury of face cloth sized hand towels in the restrooms. Drinks are expensive like most cruise companies. Almost no Low sugar drink options just Diet Coke or water. Waiters to take drink orders are very rare to find. Each room attendant works on their own and services 16 cabins . Tipping individually proves to be the best way to reward the 4 persons that we dealt with each day. First cruise line we have used onboard cruise excursions. They were reasonably priced and with Gibraltar got us to the Rock very quickly and early. We had a rude French speaking bus driver in Corsica that would drive us mad singing with one hand only on the wheel . We got 50% refund following a complaint. Boarding and disembarkation very quick and easy. Read Less

Ship beautiful, crew fantastic, courteous, efficient, caring. Would book again... but excursions.... Oporto went on boat / wine making tour. 3 hrs. Guide extremely poor. Got to Port Wine making business for tour and waited 30 mins in dark reception. Weren’t aware we were coming! So didn’t let us in! Boat trip was rushed and guide on mobile all time trying to find another company to do wine tour. Then she rushed group through town to coach and left elderly behind as could walk at her fast speed. Then lost tour members, and another 40 mins lost trying to find them while coach parked on roundabout. No time to see Oporto shops or wander as so disorganised! Then Carriage Tour in La Rochelle- well it was a cart! And heavy rain and everyone got soaked. No plan B by tour company. Spent 40 mins sheltering in local church waiting for coach. Very poor organisation again and yet high cost. Q.V. is wonderful ship but do your own tours by local taxi- will be cheaper and you’ll use your own time wisely. Read Less

it had been over 4 years since i last cruised with RC and over 5 with the Inde who is due for a refit later this year, apart a few bits of wear and tear the ship still looked good. the independence is popular with both guests and crew and feels like a happy ship. the cabin, we had a balcony which puts most other popular lines to shame, bigger balcony, more room inside and in the bathroom and very well laid out the food was better than i remember and better than ncl, princess, holland & america, celebrity, and a lot better than P&O the entertainment, the shows were very good - a couple were not my cup of tea but were good and only one was a bit poor, the day time activities were a good variety and the quizzes were a lot better than other cruise lines i have used the staff were excellent and overall the best i have cruised with, RC i had forgotten how good you are or have you improved ? it wasn't all perfect, a couple of evening meals were disappointing and IF you have to play music in the gym and windjammer restaurant do you have to play it that loud and if you do then why play kids music to an audience whose average age is around 50 not 20 ???? shore excursions are not cheap, i tend to do my own thing but i had a lot of on board credit to use so i had 3 excursions - 2 were very good and one was poor - wine tasting, only 3 wines and only very small measures - i wonder why they didn't sell much wine ?? We arrived into Southampton on the 30th September 2017 and getting on the ship was easy and very efficient. To get off the ship was just as easy as well. The ship was massive with so much to do. From Football, quizzes, movies under the stars, bands and shows and so much more. The cabin was fairly small but very clean and our cabin attendant was excellent. Well done Maruke. The food was superb with so many choices. The only downside sometimes the food could of been a little warmer. But we can forgive that as there is so many people to cater for. Windjammer & Jade got crowded at times. The main dining room was quiet at times. Johnny Rockets was superb and burgers were amazing and so were the milkshakes. There are loads to do if you want to do it. One of my favourites was the map quiz in the Schooner Bar on deck 4. Special recognition for service from assistant waiter Raymond in Romeo & Juliet. What a lovely man you are and were so kind to me and my son. We miss you. Also George head waiter of Romeo & Juliet. Miss you George. You were so kind to us as well as your supervisor. Miss you too. We also like to thank Elena in Schooner Bar who was outstanding and looked after us so well. Will miss you a lot. She always got me my favourite grey goose and diet coke. Thank you sweetheart. Got of the ship. Done a couple of excursions. Not too bad. Read Less

We did this as a back to back with the previous Norway cruise. That cruise was with our entire family of 14, so we wanted the extra suite space for entertaining, and did not want to change cabins. This cruise was only for us and was to celebrate our 50th anniversary, so we enjoyed the extra pampering that went along with this cabin category. We had been to some of these ports previously and did not take any ship excursions. The weather in Civitiveccia ??? was awful with pouring rain and wind, so we were glad that we had no plans to visit Rome. The staff was wonderful. Everyone from our cabin steward to the cleaners around the ship were friendly and smiling. Luminae restaurant is a wonderful perk with this category. There is a completely different dinner menu that sometimes has unheard of (to us) choices. Be aware that you can ask for and order from the menu in the MDR or combine them. The majority of the passengers were British and this had an impact in two ways that I'll comment on. The outside entertainers were geared to them, naturally, so not great for US guests. At disembarkation it created a traffic nightmare. It seemed like all the Brits were being picked up by a family member or a taxi. Getting off the ship went smoothly. However, keep this in mind and give yourself extra time as you travel on. We had arranged for a car service to bring us to Heathrow. After greeting us as we left the terminal, he had to bring the car from the car park, just across the street. It took him 20 minutes! We consider Celebrity our favorite cruise line. Read Less

What can I say, just outstanding. The staff were friendly and worked so hard and a special mention of our waiter and assistant waiter on table 219, Jason and Pande and Aleks the Sommelier. Didn't see much of our cabin steward but when we did see him he was lovely and kept the room immaculate. The food was exceptional ,one comment though that I think it needs to have more variety on it as it didn't change that much, still had Filet and Chateau Briand and my husband loved the escargots. The ship was beautiful as we expected, could do with some more lifts as they were extremely busy at certain periods of the trip but that was no big deal. Eddie the entertainment director was fabulous as was our Captain "the voice from above", certainly was very visible and mixed with all the passengers which makes a change. The shows were excellent as were the individual acts that came on, Jane Curry was terrific as were the McDonald brothers. The tours were good although the storm in Rome put a slight dampener on things but that's not Celebrity's fault. My husband and myself loved everything about the cruise that whilst on board we booked the next one, roll on September 23rd next year. Read Less

Know we have nothing to compare this cruise with as our first time on any cruise ship, but loved it and so impressed with everything. Parking at Southampton and getting through security was so quick and boarding very easy and straightforward. Amazed at how much was on offer on ship. Stateroom spacious and had everything we needed. Staff were amazing, so friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Food fantastic in every venue and just so much choice, all well presented. Entertainment was great. Ice skating shows were amazing, as was the show Grease and the other entertainment in Alhambra theatre was also very high standard. Found other people on cruise very friendly. Hot tub lovely place to warm up and pool great place to cool off. Ice cream very welcome on hot days sitting by the pool. Great selection of cocktails and speciality coffees. Loved the party nights on Promenade, the quizzes, and watching rock climbing etc. Getting off ship in ports very quick and getting back on also very easy. Lovely to be met with cold water and lemonade and a cold flannel when returning to ship after day on excursions. Loved seeing the Apes in Gibraltar and views from Rock amazing. Also very exciting seeing dolphins swimming near ship on our arrival in Gibraltar. Great trip to Aux de Provence in Marseille, pretty town and great place to have coffee and people watch. Rome was also great excursion for seeing all the sights, although tiring due to crowds and heat. Lisbon was also very interesting and great place to visit. Shuttle from ports takes you into town if you wish to walk around, or alternatively there are trams and tour buses. Would have liked more time to explore Lisbon. We didn't get off ship at every port and had some restful days on board instead, which suited us fine. Some small children on ship and a few older kids but not so many as school holidays over. Rest of passengers were mixed ages and quite a few family groups and couples. Even if you didn't go in a group, it was always easy to meet people as everyone so friendly. We ate in Romeo and Juliet dining room every evening and our waiter Ricky and assistant waitress Laiza were amazing people. They really cared about the passengers and went over and beyond to ensure everything was perfect for you. Such lovely people and we felt quite sad when it came time to say goodbye to them. Never had that on a holiday before. The ship was clean and had everything you could possibly want and would happily recommend this cruise Read Less

I enjoyed every mouthful of the half stone I put on in weight... however, there's really no need to put weight on as you can have all the excercise you need onboard. The gym is excellent with a variety of machines to use. There's also a running track on deck 12 which goes around the entire deck, as well as the sports courts where you can play a number of sports. There's the flow rider and crazy golf if you like something less energetic. Entertainment was excellent with a variety of shows. Comedians, singers, musicals, musicians. You name it! Read Less

The entertainment was good good shows guest entertainers with lots of laughfter. At times there was too much on at the same time so had to choose waht to go to. The two shore excursions we took were good and the information was helpful to us. Other ports we did our own thing and went ashore and looked around found some lovely places to just sit and people watch. The ice shows as always were great and well worth going to see. We wanted it because it fitted in with our holiday dates. The crew were all very happy, helpful always smiling and an occasional song as well. The Independence was very clean overall and lots to do, even on a sea day it didn't feel crowded. You were spoilt for choice on dining experiences. We had the deluxe drinks package and every drink we asked for was free so very contented with it. The atmosphere in the casino was great. If you just wanted to watch others gambling you could and if you just wanted a small flutter that was OK as well. The food in the main dining rooms and windjammer was tasty and hot with a great variety to choose from. The public areas were clearly marked, and clean and spacious. The only negatives we found were the lack of seating in the bars on Sea days and evenings. The rule regarding the reserving of sunbeds was not fully enforced. The overall experience was fantastic for us though. Read Less

Had reservations about if our 2 children aged 12 and 7 would enjoy? No need to have worried, they both loved it and more than enough for them to do. Food in the main dining room was excellent with plenty of choice and accommodating to a fussy 7 yr old eating requests! Entertainment was spot on, more casual dining was also good which we used for breakfast and snacks. We were also pleased that on formal evenings, being smart was sufficient, men were not required to wear suits or even a jacket if they did not wish to, this suited us as we did not want to get too dressed up, we like to relax on holiday. This was our first time cruising with RC. We'd previously sailed with P&O. Firstly, I need to say that we don't do the dressing-up thing & until a couple of years ago we would never have considered going on a cruise. Our nephew got married on Azura & we wouldn't have missed it for the world. We are now, though, officially hooked on the cruise experience. Embarkation was smooth. Cabins were available at 1pm. Sebastian came to introduce himself & when we told him our suitcases weren't there he went off to find them. It's a beautiful ship. We liked the idea of having a street down the middle of deck 5. We mostly ate in Windjammer.I enjoyed the food in there but my husband thought it was too small & not fit for purpose. Food was tasty though & plenty of choice. We don't do the daily entertainment things so can't really comment on them. Cuddy the cruise director was good with a great sense of humour. The lads in 2 Poets Pub were great. Very attentive - Francisco & Bernie in particular. Had a lovely meal in Chops Grille - highly recommended. Food was delicious with a large variety of choices. and Rosebeth and Rey, (Sapphire restaurant) who served us were friendly, polite and very informative about the ports of call. They made a great effort with our children and even prepared foods off the menu to cater for their needs. Entertainment was 1st class and my 2 children aged 14 and 16 had a great time and made many friends, due to the first night teenage meeting group. There was plenty of room on the sundecks, for either shade or sun. The gym had a large variety of equipment, which my husband and son enjoyed using every other day. The cities visited were interesting for all, whether you wanted to see historical sites, beaches or just for shopping. All staff couldn't do enough for you. I'd just like to mention Cuddy's meditation class - absolutely brilliant - both my husband and I have really benefited from this seminar. I can't wait until our next cruise. Read Less

This was our 2nd cruise on Independence Of The Seas and the ship was just as great as we remembered. Food in the main dining room was varied and always served quickly even when it was really busy. Windjammer selection is always good and plenty of choice. The only other restaurant we ate at this time was Johnny Rockets and again food really good and freshly cooked for you. We had an Ocean View cabin this time and can honestly say that we did not miss having a balcony this time, we didn't spend that much time in the cabin. Great entertainment, show in Alhambra were really good, particularly enjoyed Take That Experience and Grease. We also had 2 Ice shows to see too. Try out the progressive quiz which is held on each sea day morning with Joff Eaton, lots of fun. Crew as always couldn't do enough for you and my son would have stayed in the Voyagers club 24/7 if we let him. Looking forward to seeing how the refit goes and I'm sure we will be back on board soon. Read Less

Princess has always delivered consistently good service and this Mediterranean Adventure was no exception. We've sailed on Crown before as well as Caribbean and Grand Princesses and the ship was familiar enough to feel comfortable but slightly different in some aspects from her sisters to make the experience just as refreshing. We are low demanding customers so found the service excellent by our standards. Food was 1st class in all areas, entertainment actually better than our last cruise in 2015 and although the itinerary was exactly the same, the choice of tours at the various ports of call meant there was always something different to do. There was the usual one or two complaining about sunbed hogging and to my astonishment one lady turned her nose up at the Horizon Court Buffet one night saying there was nothing there she liked. Out of interest I went round and counted over a dozen different hot meat or fish main dishes with enough vegetable/potato/rice variations to probably put together over a 100 different meal combinations; not to mention the salads, cold meats and fish and fruit options. At 11 years old the Crown is a seasoned ship, not brand spanking new and no doubt ships built in the last 3 or 4 years will be far more advanced in facilities and decor styling. But this for my personal needs is what I want; it is clean, stylish and real feels like a proper cruise ship should, more than a floating hotel. We've put down a future cruise deposit with Princess but it looks like our next trip will be on the Sapphire or Regal. We'll miss not sailing on the Grand Class - long may they reign. Read Less

My husband and I have cruised on the Independence several times and love everything about it, the staff are always friendly and helpful, we like to stay in a junior suite as we like the space and balcony, our cabin steward was excellent too. We prefer to eat in the windjammer most nights as it gives us the opportunity to be more flexible with meal times . The service in the dining room is superb and the food is better some days than others. We enjoy eating in Chops but our favourite is Giovannis. Entertainment is good most of the time but the ice skating shows are the best. The gymnasium is excellent and well equipped with a fantastic view. There is plenty to do onboard whether it's sunbathing, swimming, flo riding, watching a movie or just having a drink, the choice is yours. I have nothing but praise for this ship so when I read negative comments from passengers who were on the same cruise as me, I wonder why. Read Less
