My mom and I thought this would be a wonderful trip on a river cruise to Portugal, a place neither of us had ever been. The positive critique 1st, the cabin was nice and the food overall was a 4 out of 5. We chose this cruise because Viking refused to fully refund a cruise that we had booked for Oct 2020. I made the mistake of canceling the cruise before they did, so they held back $1800 (the trip insurance) which could only be used for a future cruise, while giving my other family members, booked on the exact same cruise, a FULL refund because they procrastinated until Viking cancelled the ...

We wanted to see Portugal. We would have enjoyed more time in Porto. This would have been a better land tour. Portugal doesn't lend itself to a river cruise. The staff was excellent, especially our tour guide. The food was excellent. Our plane reservations coiuld have been better. We almost didn't make our connection from Newark to Denver on the way home. I have been on numerous Viking cruises and find the service, food, and staff to always be excellent. I have no complaint about that on THIS cruise.
The boat is smaller due to river constraints so the rooms are a bit smaller. Two single beds makes it really crowded. You and your companion better have a good system for 'passing' each other....or spring for a suite. One bed might make it easier ...

The Douro River is famous port and wine country. Unfortunately Viking has a very poor provider of Portuguese wine to complement the fabulous food they serve. The breakfast choices were not as expansive as other river cruises and coffee was poor. Lunch choices as well were limited. Cabin had sewer gas coming out of the shower drain. Made a terrible odor. Ship personnel knew about the situation but continued to book this and several others with the same issue. Apparently the sewer pipes gather under these cabins for the entire ship and the gases and odor rise up through the shower drains is several cabins on several decks. I choose this cruise for a Christmas Holiday. It was disappointing because the schedule was changed do to the maintenance on the locks. This could not have been avoided.
