This is my first river cruise so I don’t have a comparison with any other cruise line. I started with an optional 3 days in Prague where I had an excellent guide. In fact, on all the excursions I went on the local guides they use were excellent. I met the ship in Linz and embarkation went without a hitch. My cabin was comfortable and very clean. I was traveling by myself so can’t answer for the space available for two people. The ship was well kept and the overall cleanliness seemed high. Staff always seemed to be available to help or answer questions. Coming home was a real letdown as I couldn’t just walk down the hall and be served breakfast, lunch or dinner. Everything I had was excellent and they provided enough variety to satisfy almost any appetite. Several evenings we were provided with onboard entertainment from the local area. These were very enjoyable and gave a nice respite after a day of excursions. I chose this cruise because of the variety of activities they offered. There was a range of active, discovery or classic. I ended up taking quite a few walking tours along with several of the optional tours. I did a concert in Vienna and a Hungarian dinner and wine pairing. Again, both were well done. The only glitch, and this was no ones fault, is that we had to be bussed into Budapest rather than sail in. This was due to the river being too low for the boat to navigate past Slovakia. The captain was quite apologetic but it’s difficult to argue with nature. They handled the change very professionally and we didn’t miss out on any planned activities in Budapest. If I had it to do over again I probably would spend a little more time in Budapest. That’s just my impression. Overall, the experience was great and I certainly would use Avalon again. Probably a different route next time but I would have no hesitation signing up again. Read Less

Avalon never misses an acceptable value. Service is impeccable. Rooms are shining with cleanliness. Linens are superb. Unfortunately, this is not enough when you consider the price one pays per day. Cruise plan was uninspired (as an understatement). The stateroom was no less than claustrophobic. Taking a shower required acrobatic qualifications. Smoking areas were on the same end of the boat, thus requiring long walks in many occasions. This is highly inconsiderate and I hope Avalon doesn't attempt to re educate smokers... The food was mediocre (another understatement). The free wine matched its poor quality. On the other hand, the crew was superb. Chamber maids were devoted and meticulous. Hotel manager and dining room manager were highly professional and exceeded all expectations. Entertainment on board ranged from acceptable to very good. Bar prices were fair and didn't exhibit any greediness. To sum up: For a price tag of 500-900 USD per day, Avalon passengers deserve better. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was a great way to see eastern European destinations that we wanted to see. Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. We enjoyed the range of excursions from active to more sedentary. The river cruise offered the opportunity to unpack once and be in one room for 7 days as opposed to a different hotel every night. Finally, we felt well cared for by cruise staff who gave us guidance and help in visiting sites on our own or in excursions if we chose. The captain was very accommodating in answering questions about the ship's operations. The cruise director was knowledgeable and always ready to help. The dining room staff tried very hard to please, and were friendly and enjoyable to converse with. I did not feel that the hot tub was well cared for. It was unattractive and did not promote the use of the facility. Also the deck furniture was very uncomfortable. It was hard to operate for lounging positions and did not contour well to one's back. We chose this cruise initially because we wanted to have at least two days in Vienna. And, because we could not book our cruise until late summer, this was our best option. But what serendipity! It was a wonderful experience on the beautiful Avalon Impression. Our vivacious cruise director Maria was very informative and took excellent care of everyone. We appreciated the multiple included excursion options and took full advantage of them. It was a jam-packed 7+ days with hiking, biking, canoeing, wine and beer tastings, museum tours, and concerts! All experiences were very well-planned, and all guides were extremely knowledgeable. Crew members were always very friendly, pleasant and attentive. And the dining choices were delicious, with emphasis on local cuisine and wines. We had never been on a river cruise before, and we're now huge fans of this smaller ship type sailing! We much prefer this to multi-thousand passenger cruises! Read Less

We sailed on the Impression, but our Journey started several days earlier with an extension in Salzburg. Tamas was our guide on the ship, and was also our guide in Salzburg. I cannot say enough about how incredible he was. Everything was taken care of for us, and he was always available to answer questions. Our cabin was wonderful for the most part....the last night on board a shorter boat docked next to our boat, and as we had the last cabin, the other boat's exhaust pumped into our cabin. That was disconcerting and a bit concerning, but was the only negative thing I can say. The food was wonderful, and I loved that we had so many locally sourced foods. The entertainment was very enjoyable, the ship piano player was fantastic. The duo that got on the boat in Vienna and rode with us for a little while was great! All those that served on the ship were always relaxed and smiling, and served with great skill. The excursions were as advertised, and very enjoyable. The guides were knowledgeable and for the most part, very good at keeping those on the tour interested. The one poor guide was a lady in Grein who told us the same things over and over again interspersed with 'I don't know what else to tell you." I am not sure if she is inexperienced, or if she was uninterested. Overall, this was one of the best vacations of our lives, and a great way to celebrate our 30th anniversary! Read Less

Right from check-in at Linz to check-out at Budapest, everything was absolutely perfect. It was our first river cruise and it turned out to much more than our expectations. The ship was quite big with a capacity of about 160 guests, though there were only 106. The panorama suite was very good with full glass window. The bar, coffee room and restaurant were top class. The gym was too small with no view at all. The best part of the ship was top deck. The view from there was amazing. They had different type of shore excursions at every port for guests with different taste, and everyone enjoyed it. Being vegetarian the food was a little problem. The lunch used to be buffet which was alright. They used to repeat few things but there was no problem as such. The problem was sit out dinner where it was set menu, where nothing could be done if you don't like your dish. The management should pay little more attention on vegetarian menu. The service was absolutely impeccable. The restaurant stewards, tour director, housekeeping and fitness trainer, everyone was too good. It really deserves 5 stars !! Read Less
