Having cruised only on Discovery, we decided to try Discovery 2 and we are very glad we did! We flew from Manchester to Malaga and arrived slightly late. We had the usual queueing to check in which did nothing to raise our flagging spirits! As a result our first evening was rather brief... check-in, bar, safely drill, food and bed! Islands Restaurant was very busy and rather chaotic but this was understandable given the late and large influx of passengers. We spent our second day in Gibraltar before sailing on to the delightful Funchal in Madeira. All the itinerary ran on time and we enjoyed every stop. We did our own thing in every destination using public transport or local tour companies. Our cabin (deck 3 inside) was clean and tidy with a super, powerful shower. Our cabin steward dealt with all our concerns and made us feel really welcome. We dined mainly in 47°, and a few times in Islands and Gallery 47. The food was excellent.. great quality, good choice of menus and brilliant service. Islands was great for lunches... we selected our food and took it outside to eat in the verandah area next to the ice cream machine! The entertainment was the biggest plus for us. Jasmine and Adam, the professional dance couple, were excellent. They took excellent dance classes every day and hosted social dance sessions almost every evening! Great teachers, very friendly and very patient... their performances in the Broadway Show Lounge were breathtaking! The Broadway Shows were superb. The entertainment team were tireless and talented and a joy to watch. Manuel and Tom, on piano and guitar respectively, provided excellent entertainment throughout the evenings in the Atrium and Live lounge. We loved this ship, its crew and its sheer good value for money! Read Less

Just back from a Caribbean cruise from the 3rd to the 18th of December 2019, with the Marella Discovery 2, and I was delighted with this holiday, our cabin was on deck 6, and the cabin crew were fantastic especially Vanessa she went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed, the entertainment was great throughout the ship, absolutely loved the shows each night, the bar staff and waiters were always at hand so you literately never had to move from your seat to get a drink, each bar you went to had different entertainment on every night so you were never bored and could take your pick to what suited you. Also every member of staff we met went above and beyond to help you out and make sure your voyage was enjoyable, can’t fault any staff member, the food was good in all restaurants with a great selection on each menu, and again the staff went above and beyond to help you when needed, we seriously have nothing bad to say about our time on the discovery 2 we will certainly be booking again in the very near future. Thank you for such a good experience and a fantastic holiday. I would definitely recommend this ship to anyone that has not sailed on it before. Read Less

Fantastic cruise... yes it is an older ship, but it is small enough to make great friends and see them again...the food was fantastic...the service and friendliness of the crew out of this world and the entertainment crew led by Katy fantastic and very professional. Plenty of room for all of your clothes in the cabins we were on deck 6 cabin 202 facing the bow, large double bed. We have been on many different cruise lines and the value for money with Marella cruises cannot be beaten anywhere to date. This was an adult only cruise and would never recommend this cruise for children. Once you have paid your money you never have to pay for anything else unless you wish to upgrade, the cruise gives you 6 days at sea to relax crossing the Atlantic which we love rather than having to rush ashore every day. we hope to go again on the return journey in march hope to see our great friends that we met on board last trip again. This is the second time on the Celebration and only our second cruise. We chose a similar itinerary as last year as we thoroughly enjoy the Trans Atlantic Crossing. We flew to Malaga from Birmingham to join the boat and the flight and embarkation went smoothly. The boat had been in port for a week prior to our cruise so there were no passengers disembarking. This makes embarkation so much easier. The ship is one of the oldest of the Marella fleet and is small compared to the big P&O and Royal Caribbean ships. The ship shows no sign of age as they are constantly painting and updating in tired areas. We booked a balcony cabin on the Port side to get the sun during the crossing. The cabin was great very clean with a big double bed ,robes , Clarins toiletries , a TV , minibar and tea and coffee . The balcony had a sunbed and two chairs on it enough room to relax and chill . The cabin was cleaned daily to a high standard. There were two main restaurants a buffet and A La Carte. Never any queues and you can choose to sit alone or on mixed tables. The standard of the food was excellent. There are three specialty restaurants. All of these serve top quality food at a great price. The bars and entertainment areas are very good . The Horizons bar was our favourite at the front of the boat where you can monitor your progress across the ocean. The quality of drinks are high. We chose to pay the premium drinks package. This was good value for us as we enjoy certain brands and like a specialty coffee and good wine however the drinks in the normal package are all branded. Entertainment is good with an enthusiastic young show team who work there socks off nightly. During the cruise we had two guest comedians who were very good. I used Oceans Spa for a facial and massage. Pele my therapist was excellent the best massage I have ever had and it was very well priced. I had the top to toe pamper package. The only disappointment for me was the gym. It doesn’t open until 0800. It is very small with only three treadmills a bike and cross trainer. One of the treadmills was broke throughout the cruise and people were queueing to get on the equipment. Lastly the service and the staff are second to none. There is nothing they won’t do for you with a smile. Have already booked two further Marella cruises trying two of their newer boats next year but would definitely go back on the Celebration. Review of the Services And the ship over all is good. The ports of call were the most impressive qualities of the cruise. The excursions were well organised but could be achieved quite easily on your own steam for a fraction of the cost. Getting there was easy enough as planes were what was expected staff at airport on arrival could have been inside airport rather than outside but helped out well. Although Pathos airport is a checking out nightmare thompsons could straddle there buses to ensure quicker checks at gates etc. Ship : whilst a little tired looking it is clean and well looked after - what it looses in style it makes up for with the quality of its staff and there works ethic - to prevent problems of infections controls are openly in place. Activities: plenty to do and see the entertainment was very good and there were lots of options to choose from something for all tastes. Although the cruise director was a bit like Gladys from "hi de hi" which was annoying towards the end definitely felt a bit patronised by the repeated tannoy announcements that were aimed at elderly patrons but were degrading for younger ones. Services: staff couldn't do enough for you although some in the buffet part were lax at clearing the tables quickly or getting drinks - more staff needed here to help sort this out. Ports and excursions: these were the highlight of the trip excellent ! The excursions were expensive and we decided (after a Turkish bath experience where we had paid for what we thought was the whole experience we ended up paying extra) that we would do the rest of the ports on our own. This was easy as most were accessible by foot or buses and taxis at the port. For example: in Preause we disembarked for Athens and the Acropolis we followed the instructions given by the ship which basically said turn left out of port gates and follow the road around till you come to a overpass which leads to the metro station. We realised on the return that had we gone straight ahead at the Irish bar and down the street on left at the Michelin sign we would have come directly to the metro. The staff in the station were very good spoke English and gave a map of what to do once at other end. The cost was 2.40 euro and when we got to the Acropolis it was a free day so we saved quite a bit as the ship would have charged us £38- £58 for trips a massive saving not that we couldn't have paid that just hate wasting money if there's another way. Dining: the food was ok but could be better a lot of it was cold when you got it so needed to be discarded preferred to go to the freshly made food counters to ensure got what I wanted. Waiter dining was nice and friendly have been on other ships that are better organised they had two sittings every evening and were easier to deal with this happened on this ship on the captains night. Summary: overall a good trip considering it was booked to help recover from a recent bereavement it helped no end. The sunny weather was enough to cheer us up as it was late summer British temperatures and above in all ports. Read Less
