Having previously sailed on Explorer 1 in December and really enjoyed the ship and food we thought we would try Discovery 2. Embarkation from Montego Bay was a disaster, after a 10 hour flight we were left in a small holding area for over an hour because Tui did not have enough coaches for us. It was awful, there was no air con and people were fainting !! After eventually getting on a coach, they make a point that everyone must wear seat belts due to safety but the driver was talking for the whole journey on his mobile phone!! Our balcony cabin was ok, plenty of storage the shower had a mind of its own and kept going hot and cold, the air con didn't work so we complained, they fixed it but then we couldn't turn it off !! The food was awful!! Buffet food was cold, restaurant food was served to us cold although the plates were very hot.The only place you could get a hot meal was Surf and Turf but that cost over £60 per meal for two. The drinks were good and service good, the staff worked hard. The evening entertainment show cast team were excellent and if it hadn't been for them I would have given this review a 1 star not a 2. Discovery 2 is not a ship I will be returning on. Read Less

This cruise got off to a bad start. It took 15 minutes to find steps to get off the plane and another hor and 15 minutes being held in a hot airless corridor before a bumpy coach trip to the ship. I later found out that probems in UK airports led to 3 planes arriving at much the same time. The local staff (TUI and airport) were overwhelmed. A situation made worse by the local authorities making the coaches queue outside and only 1 at a time allowed into the bonded area. Not Marella's fault but the fiasco at the muster drill certainly was. A technical problem with no backup plan led to chaos. Things improved once the cruise was under way. The captain skillfully avoided the worst of the weather although we had to miss Horta, Azores because the tenders could not launch. The ship itself may be older than some but the recent refurbishment made the public areas look new with hi tech everywhere. A mention here for the app which is really a website hosted on the ships computer - so no internet needed to use it. Dining was a weak point. The buffet area is well laid out with indoor and outside seating. The breakfast food was frequently lukewarm or missing. We quickly learned to choose the best items and avoid the rest. It was better at lunchtime but choice was limited. The MDR was much better. The main restaurant is attractive and the staff mainly very good. The food was better here. We dined as soon as it opened and had no problems getting a table for 2. Gallery 47 is the best complimentary eating place for both service and food but its limited menu means it is not for every night. Entertainment was definitely a strong point. The production cast were the best I have seen on any cruise. They were also the friendliest. The use of trained actors in the other entertainment staff was an improvement on most ships. Even the quizzes were amusing. The cruise director and his 2 assistants were top notch. Music was all over the ship with all the musicians very competent and enjoyable. Bars The bar areas were frequently overcrowded and it was often difficult to find a seat but there was a good vibe about them. The included drinks are OK. There is no need to upgrade the drinks package. This was our first cruise with Marella and it was better than I expected. Read Less

We booked this cruise as a "transitional " from the Caribbean to Palma calling at various places , we particularly were looking forward to Cuba ,Nassau and Lisbon and Bermuda ...the first three destinations were cancelled shortly after the final balance was paid ( nice!! ) We booked an upgrade and were given cabin 8031 The ship looked good , staff brilliant , food very good with a wide choice , cabin horrendous , the vessel had a major refit in 2016 , former office space was converted into cabins ( 6 in all on the port side ) On this vessel the engines are amidships and as the cabins are by the open atrium they are subject to a lot of noise , worse still they are also afflicted with constant vibration from the engines ( particularly at sea ) and creaking from the wall panels and windows .We had to move to another cabin to save our sanity .... All this made the cruise a nightmare at times , which was a shame because resturants were very good , entertainment suited most people we talked to , the other thing to note is that you cannot get away from piped music ( loud at times ) wherever you walk or sit it will always be there which is a shame because there where some very nice places . There is a complete walk round on deck ( 4 laps 1 mile ) We would probably have enjoyed the cruise more with a better cabin as the ship has a lot going for it but sadly the vibration issue afflicting it spoiled our enjoyment Read Less

I have cruised with tui for many years but this has to be one that I can stay will stick in my mind for the wrong reason. Getting to the ship was as usual very good as you would expect with marella cruises from leaving Manchester to arrival in Montego Bay. Could not fault cabin very good as usual, but when you go for evening meal in 47 Restuarant here is where it falls down. Firstly the waiters lean across table to serve other dinners on table, rather than by your side as with normal Restuarants, If you have steak for an evening meal don't expect steak knife cut through with blunt knife, you are not offered tea and coffee now you have to ask. The second day was good easy to get sun bed no worries. I took two evening shirts for formal nights but did not wear because on the evening of dress to impress I had a quick look over the Atriaum balcony and what I saw changed my mind, I was going to wear my formal wear but when people are wearing shorts and bathing wear why bother. I make my way again to 47 Restuarant that evening and was dressed with shirt bow tie trousers and shoes so as far as I was concerned smart but then dinners walk in in shorts open toed sandals so why bother. After evening meal went for walk on ship and easy to get to other areas through Broadway shops good quality into show lounge. Here maybe the show team are new but not the best I've seen I am sure they will get better. After show of to venue bar for game shows very good and funny entertainment team were very good. After shows of to love room where the casino was and again could not fault. If you are still hungry in the evening then go to Glasshouse and get a good evening buffet recommend the curry. The service in all areas was great and the waiters are very friendly and if you go often even rember what you drink which is amazing. The ship is very good indeed and unfortunately had to visit medical centre because my wife became ill, these people really do care and look after you, if it's an insurance claim don't worry they sort out the whole thing. To them I send a big thank you. So all in all here are my main points about this cruise, 1....Think about how waiters serve meals and correct utensils for meal 2....Think about dress code and monitor it Hopefully these can be improved, I realise I could have gone to Islands which is self service but I like to be served in evening. Let's hope things do improve am on discovery in December so hope for better things. Read Less

We sailed with friends, choosing this cruise based on destination and price. Dreamliner flight from Glasgow was amazing...only to be ruined by the immigration fiasco in Montego Bay. Given two cards on arrival..no pens available, herded into a hall/corridor with no aircon! Had to lean on walls/floor to complete forms, whilst security shouted instructions from the other end of the area. Form 1 taken at security, without being checked, form 2 taken as you disembarked the coach after transfer to ship. Found out after speaking to other guests, Manchester flight were given the forms onboard...how much simpler was that!! Be aware. Boarding was seamless and found cabin with no problem. Given we had got a great price for trip, our cabin, midship deck 5 was fine, a little small but you only sleep in it so was not a problem. Shower-room a little tired but spotless. Cabin staff work really hard, couldn't fault. Dining became a full time job! Food was varied and plentiful, anrything we didn't like was personal taste. Ate between two buffet restaurants during the day and Orion in the evening. Our waiters were Joseph, Samuel and Eugene...what a team. I celebrated my birthday whilst onboard and we booked Mistrals, amazing food and service. Best steak I have ever eaten. It was so good we booked again for the last night of holiday. We upgraded to Premium All Inclusive. To be honest, not worth the money..would have been cheaper paying the supplement per drink. One of our party is t total but had to pay for the upgrade as both passengers must take this. Perhaps something could be done Thomsons. Captain Harris was seen around the ship regularly, talking with his crew and passengers...something we had never seen on Royal Caribbean ships. We had 6 sea days going transatlantic, The weather here was some of the sunniest. I found this ok, enough to do if you made the effort. Entertainment crew work so hard always with a smile. All in all ship and crew were great and we would cruise with Thomson again. Tho only thing I would like to make you aware of was the timing of this cruise. We were the last ship to leave the Caribbean..end of season..most shops had little stock left. It was also over Easter or Holy Week as the Islanders called it. There were days where bars etc were closed on the trips as no alcohol can be served before 6pm, but it meant you couldn't get juice or water either. The weather was iffy, humid, plenty clouds and rain and some sunshine. Wouldn't cruise at this time again, normally go in November, weather better then. Malaga airport was a nightmare after checking for flight home. I had been warned it was the 'worst airport ever' and it lived up to this..boarding gate was changed 4 times...one of them boarding, the flight was going to Glasgow....but with Ryanair, not Thomson! All in all a great holiday with friends, can't really fault this trip Read Less

We chose this cruise for the Transatlantic crossing. However they cancelled two of the advertised destinations. Ship was renamed Thomson Nightmare by a lot of customers. Food in the self service was poor, like school dinners and the only thing you could guarantee would be hot was Soup and Porridge. The Orion Waiter Service restauarant was excellent, hot food, and brilliant waiters. The entertainment in the Broadway show lounge was very good. Service in all the bars was extremely slow. We had the drinks passage but right from day one, we were convi nced that the drinks were either watered down or they were using cheap brands. This was confirmed when a fellow passe nger witnessed a waiter pouring cheap vodka into a Smirnoff bottle, the same with gin and brandy. One night we had 7 Black Russian cocktails each and were not the slightest bit tipsy Soft drinks from the bar dispenser were poured into Scweppes, Sprite and Coca Cola bottles. This was reported. We were told that the John Smiths bitter had run out, but if you were paying for your drinks they managed to find some. On the return flight from Majorca back to Manchester, we were delayed because some seats had been double booked. Some passengers were flown to Gatwick and then had to go by coach up to Manchester. We have emailed Thomson with our complaint - their reply was - 'Sorry you were disappointed by the food I n your hotel a nd then they went on to say you should fill in the questionnaire given to you on the plane. I think this proves that they do not take complaints seriously. They don't give them out on the plane anymore, you are supposed to get one by email, we had 2 Thomson holidays last year and never got a questionnaire. Read Less

We wanted to try the transatlantic after 7 previous Thomson cruises. After booking the itinerary was changed - these things happen. We were informed we owed £37.84 (we did not) oh it was a computer glitch! The flight was fine. Our bus to the ship dumped us outside the cruise terminal in 30+ heat. We struggled to attract any attention to get a Thomson or Tui person to come and aid our access to the terminal. Finally on the boat the cabin was fine. We disliked the constant pushing of extras. The ship was used as a training ship with lots of new staff. The waiting times were long . No napkins - issue with laundry, long waits for courses - issue with galley. I felt for the staff as they are such a strength for the company. One night one little Phillopino girl was the only waitress in the theater, poor kid apologizing for wait times. The bar service was slow and customers were sent away from the bars to wait for a waiter and indeed wait we did! i did not like the supervisors (clad in white) telling their staff off in the public arena, it is not nice to see, public humiliation is a poor motivator. Cabin steward was good, waiter in the Orion Hendrick was good too. I felt sorry for them having to placate people for issues they had no control over. The buffet was poor, the food did not seem to be as high quality as in the past. Palma airport chaos and only 1 Tui staff sending us the wrong way. The Spanish airport staff had to sort the chaos out and re direct us to the Scandinavian queue! I was mildly concerned Sweden beckoned but no all was well. i have tried to be fair I do fell that the way to describe this cruise was inconsistent. Even the oranges were dry and pithy! The entertainment was good, reasonable singers we have had some really sharp women in the past - dancers were the best ever, Cruise director was fine I liked the way he kept the progressive quiz light and humorous Weighing it all up we will stay clear of the Dream and I do feel since Tui took over we may well swerve Thomson. I have always praised their product in the past but this has made me reconsider. Read Less

this was our 2nd transatlantic cruise our 1st was a rough crossing this one was very calm we stayed in an inside cabin deck 7 very clean spacious great nights sleep our cabin steward cleaned twice a day always polite and smiling we paid for the drinks package this time and where very pleased with the fantastic choice on offer coffee and tea's are free of charge if you are on the drinks package but if you used the speciality coffee bar there was a small cost £1.40 for a large latte we ate in the Orion restaurant for breakfast and evening meal all the staff in the Orion gave great service we also used all speciality restaurants for a small cover charge yes the ship is ageing but so are we LOL and they keep the ship in excellent condition shows were very good the new casino area very nice my only gripe would be not enough staff in the medusa lounge many were training and the experienced left the ship to join the new ship the discovery when we docked in cadiz we did not go on any excursions but did use the spa treatments very good afternoon being pampered the ports we visited were superb we visited Bermuda the Azores cadiz malaga Alicante Dominican republic and Palma no tenders at any ports all disembarkations went very smoothly we even had extra hours in a couple of ports as the captain used to say every day buckle up and enjoy the ride thank you to all the staff for there professionalism courtesy and friendliness. This was our second time on the Thomson Dream and will probably be the last. Al a Carte restaurants were excellent but came at an extra cost £17.95 each in the Kora La...but well worth it. Excellent food and service. The Coffee Port served Lavatzza Speciality coffees which for the most part were good value for money. We had the drinks package so a Cappuccino cost us £1.35. However the quality changed depending on the staff. Jhelena always had a smile on her face. Drinks made by Amy were usually Luke warm at best and tasted horrible and she stopped to serve staff before Cruise guests. We stopped going when she was on duty. The self service Buffett felt more like a canteen. There were very few trained staff around and drinks and table clearing was very slow. The condition of the Lido restaurant is also very tired with stained furnishings. The food was for the most part poor. The service in the bars was variable. Jeffrey in Tides bar was his usual entertaining self but sadly he is moving to another ship soon. We often were waiting over half an hour for drinks even when the bars were fairly quite. 2 intense were back in The Watersedge. Supported by David Morgan a steel drum reggae act from Barbados. We found it odd that the Casino and a busy smoking area was sharing the same area as the Kids Club (not a problem for this cruise as it was adult only). Not sure if I had kids this would be an environment I would choose for them. The show team performed to a high standard but the shows were the same as our last cruise in May 2015. We did get the opportunity to see the new show team and they were very good. We had guest entertainers... The first week was a guy from BGT he didn't go down well and we walked out after 10 minutes. Martin Daniels shows were excellent and we would be happy to pay to see him again. Stevie Jay did a Neil Dimond tribute...... Mmmmm best not comment on that. We stayed in an inside cabin this time(7113) Heri our cabin steward was excellent, the cabin was cleaned twice daily and towels changed when we wanted. Last time we were staying in cabin 1010 an outside plus cabin and was worried how we would cope with the inside cabin. But I have to say the extra certainly wasn't worth paying and would be happy with an inside cabin in the future. We had the drinks package and found that the House Wine varied so much we started to wonder if this was a ploy to get people to buy the premium wines. By the end of the second week the Rose wine was undrinkable. Our biggest gripe was that Thomson decided to use this trip as a training opportunity for staff employed for their new ship Tui Discovery. There were far too many trainees in all areas and this did affect the standards. Other staff we recognised from last time appeared despondent. Thomson you need to emphasise customer service ..... smiles cost nothing. The Officers also need to buck their ideas up....instead of shouting at your staff and then standing back, you need to help them out from time to time, especially when the area is busy. The pools were fine some days they were closed due to sea conditions. But sun loungers were hard to get as Thomson doesn't apply the tanning time rule and they didn't remove towels from beds which had been reserved and not used for some time. Read Less
