Chose this cruise due to the ports of call. Flight out from Manchester smooth, excellent onboard service and check in at Montego Bay was efficient.I knew the ship having previously travelled on her when in Royal Caribbean brand, but transformation was great. We had an inside cabin and was suffucient for our needs as only in room to shower and change, room kept clean by excellent cabin steward. Dining-- we are early risers so we ate breakfast at the buffet in Islands restaurant, plenty of variety of food and very tasty, we also went to the same restaurant for buffet lunch, excellent choices and never had a problem finding something to eat.Had evening meals in 47 restaurant with waiter service, couldnt fault the menus, evening meals excellent choices and our waiters were superb, nothing too much trouble. Now the entertainment, this was our 20th cruise having been with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and P&O, the entertainment team onboard Marella Discovery 2 were by far the most professional group we have ever seen, so energetic, it made the cruise so special as we like the shows in the evening but this team were in a different league from previous cruises,Thanks for your hard work We visited Jamaica, Grand Cayman,Cuba,Belize,Costa Maya, Cozumel, Guatemala and Honduras. We only did 2 tours, Cuba in an old vintage car, pink Pontiac and was great fun, booked before we left with independent company at half the price. We also did the catamaran and snorkel in Roatan,Honduras, this was through ship and was excellent value. Cozumel lots of shops,Costa maya has a purpose built cruise area and this was fantastic as you could watch the dolphin show, free unless you wanted to swim with them, lots of shopping and even pool bars to swim in. Staff onboard Marella Discovery 2 were always smiling, service was excellent throughout the ship, nothing was too much trouble. I would have no hesitation in going on this cruise again, Marella excelled my expectations Just made extra special by all the shows in the evening, this for me was the highlight of our cruise, cant compliment the evening entertainment team enough. Return flight and check in once again smooth and efficient Read Less

My sister from Canada invited me to go on this Cruise with her friends. The ship was extremely clean. The Shows were awesome. There were many other activities including golf and rock climbing. Every night we enjoyed the entertainment. The stage performances were great. The actors did a wonderful job. I felt as if I was in New York without paying the price for the Broadway show tickets. The crews were outstanding. Food and drinks were delicious and non-stop. I still keep hearing the bell and Mr Spread the love. I met many interesting people. We had great times at Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. I highly recommend this cruise for the perfect sized ship and outstanding crew. It was a peaceful and very enjoyable experience. I definitely will take another trip on the Marella Discovery 2 Ship. I thank the captain for a safe trip and the crew for their hard work and outstanding services. Read Less

We chose this cruise for two things , first that it covered Christmas and New year, secondly it was going to Cuba. Flight from Gatwick to Montego Bay was good no problems , arrival was chaotic , wrong forms for immigration given out so had to fill new ones while standing in a long line. Embarkation at port no problem. Cabin allocated was on deck 2 with a large window. Good size with a sofa lots of storage space, good size bathroom with a shower , just shower gel and soap in there. Lots of hangers in wardrobe and able to hold full length evening dresses so no creases. good size safe , though this one need ed you to use a credit card to open and close it which meant you had to keep card out at all times. Kettle and tea and coffee provided also carafe which meant you could fill this at water stations near lifts meaning that you did not have to buy water. Water is not included in the all inclusive product but is if you upgrade to premium at an extra 99 pounds per person per week. we did not do this as the normal package was adequate. Ate in main dining room for most breakfasts and dinner, food at night was a bit boring, steaks when offered were not good, best steak was on last night. short on vegetables Could do better. Gallery 47 (italian) was good but service hit and miss. Glass house tapas good , pizza good, service again hit and miss also a lot of vibration here. Buffet ok but hate looking for a table only had a couple of lunches here and 1 dinner. Snack shack good for quick breakfast and lunch. used Veranda on deck 9 most days as had comfortable sunbeams (adult only) nice and quiet. Noisy round pool . Indoor pool area good but a bit stuffy on a hot day. Entertainment was the best a different show every night with very good performers . Venue had a good variety of acts with 4 actor staff all good , Katie, Jenny,Josh and Adam kept us amused every night . Live bands every night in different places plus piano players, guitarists etc all good. Staff in bars excellent especially Boris and Dejen who looked after us on the Veranda deck Information desk staff were not the best could do with more training they did not know their product , learned more from other passengers. Destination desk handed out maps of ports which were useless had to wait to get off ship to find out more. Felt that they did not want us to know more so that we booked tours through the ship. Do not book and pay for internet as its not good and expensive for what you get. Most ports have a bar etc with wifi etc. We missed Havana completely as there was a storm and ship not allowed to dock . If we had managed to get into port Havana was under 4 feet of water and we may not have got out again. Costa Maya was excellent pool, bars , shops etc all at dock Dolphins Flamingos to watch for free. Guatemala was one of the best ports , we took a local river tour for 40 Dollars fantastic experience , good guide (Herman) Roatan , again problems so did not go into Mahogany bay instead went into old port took taxi to West bay , spent day at beach @ 20 dollars each to include beds , umbrellas and wifi good value. Belize , went to St Johns cathedral as had been before and wanted to revisit, also Governers house which was still not open to public, was not 12 years ago either. Cozumel just wandered the seafront Ochios Rios spent day at beach as had been before. Montego Beach shade on ship had been before. Over all do not think we will visit this side of the caribbean again. Would go on Discovery 2 again if price and Itinerary ok Read Less

Heard from friends of Marella Discovery 2, especially the ' all inclusive' feature. My wife and I have done 8 cruises before and we were impressed with the service, the politeness of the whole crew of Marella Discovery 2. Never seen in any of the ships before the amount of drinks ( free ) available on that ship ... Anywhere on any floor you are greeted with carts of drinks. On the deck, almost every 15-20 minutes, you are approached by servers with always a smile on their face to offer you with drinks. Service is impeccable anywhere on the ship , in any department. Very clean ship. Entertainment was out of this world . Food ... no need for reservation in ' fine dining'. First come first. The only area which , I believe , needs improvement is the buffet . Breakfast is the same every day . If Marella improves in area of food , I won't hesitate to give the ship a 10/10. As it stands I give it a 9. Read Less

Wanted to visit Havana and limited in choice as not a fan of MSC. Liked the Tui dreamliner flights in premium economy. Pleasantly surprised at how good the condition of this older ship was. Great staff and cruise director made it very relaxed . Food was very good and drink package covered most tastes. Only £50 to upgrade if you want top brands. Would definitely book with Tui again as good value for money compared to most of American owned ships . The evening shows were the best on any ship and geared towards a uk audience. Cabins were fine if a bit dated but the dining areas are very good with excellent service throughout. We ate at the 2 specialty restaurants and surf and turf was particularly good. Gym ,steam and sauna are all included You get your cases picked up outside the cabin on the last night ,delivered to the airport and checked through to your destination, great service with all tips included. Chose this cruise as it aligned with our holidays. Loved the atrium in the ship. This was a great focal point, especially to enjoy a few drinks. Deck 9 was always a hive of entertainment, which was great but meant it wasn’t always easy to get a seat in the sun and not ideal for a quiet read. It is a shame the lower decks did not get the sun. All the staff with the exception of those at reception were incredibly helpful and friendly. They couldn’t do enough to help my mother in law who is not very mobile. It was a shame that the itinerary made it difficult for her to disembark. Loved Havana. A unique place full of character. Food was plentiful and well presented. Loved the shows. I love live theatre so always a winner. There were a couple of particularly talented performers who definitely have the potential to go further in their careers! The show team worked relentlessly, with very little free times yet produced some very varied shows of high quality. Personally I loved the Musicals show and Hot Summers Night. However, there was such a variety everyone had something to see during the trip. Read Less

Where do I even begin, This year I was fortunate enough to experience the best holiday imaginable. I booked my holiday through TUI for a two week carirbean cruise on the Marella Discovery 2. This was my first ever cruise and the price and itenary were incredible. The whole holiday was seemless from booking, to flying to arriving to resort to embark the ship. TUI and Marella staff were always on hand to help. We were greeted with the smiliest faces at Montego Bay where we were checked in and directed to board the Cruise. That night we were instructed and reassured on all safety procedures and given a guided tour of the cruiseship to find our bearings whilst our suitcases were delivered to our cabins. Everynight we recieved an entertainment planner for the days entertainment and events as well as an update on the days port, local information, weather for the day, currencys used and things to do. The cruise was all inclusive and having stayed in many 5* all inclusive hotels around the world the food and drink on the cruise may as well have been 10*. The variety, standard, presentaion and flavour were fantastic. There were many retsuarants to use and the only problem i faced was trying not too eat too much or picking where to eat. The staff on the cruise were the best team of staff i have ever come accross on my holidays. Everyone was so warm and friendly and really helped to personalise your holiday and go out of their way to make it special. In the mornings you would have a wake up announcement from Captain Chris and the Cruise Director Martyn who would start you day off with a lovely update on the weather outside, the port, when you could get off the cruise and overall a lovely start to the day. When you go on shore there are so many different things to see and do to experience the fantastic culture and sights. We always booked out excurions through TUI on the cruise and everything we did added value to our holiiday experience and was unique and great for getting out of the country what we wanted to see, do and experience. We never faced any issues with our cabin and never struggled for size. The cabin was cleaned twice a day and two sets of towels also. We were always left chocolates at night and the cleaners were lovely, always said hello when passing in the corridors. TV channels were fab, plenty of films and programmes to choose from and we loved that there were Marella channels to keep you posted with excursions. We always tried to tune into Cruise Director TV to find out whats been on and whats upcoming chilst on board. The pool on the cruise was a great size and perfect way to cool off on a hot carribean day. There was never any issues with sunbeds as there was deck 9 and deck 10 to lay out on. The entertainment team will keep you entertained with poolside games and quizzes as well as laying back to onboard bands and and talented voices to sing poolside. Waiter service aorund the pool was an added bonus as you didnt even have to move to get a drink. The entertainments show team, actor hosts and family hosts really made our holiday. They were all so friendly and always smiling and laughing. The level of enterainment on the Cruise is one of the most professional, talanted and sought after I have ever seen. The entertainment lounge and gameshows venue were always full and you could see from just looking around all of the guests were constantly happy and enjoying as much as us. A big shout out to the whole team and we really hope we get to see you on furture cruises. Your an assest to Marella and TUI and the way you interact and are constanly around your guests socialising and entertaining is incredible. we dont have children but even seeing the childcare team around the pool helping with quizzes and interacting around the cruise was also amazing to see. All of the staff want to inteact with the guests and really go out of their way to make their holiday. The cruise also has a jogging track, a virtual reality room, casino, climbing wall, minigolf, outdoor cinema, nighclub, shops and full spa just to name a few extras. I would 100% recommend a cruise on the Marella Discovery 2 for the best holiday you can ask for. Read Less

Review Marella Discovery 2 Cuban Fusion 22 January 2018 This was our forth Thomson (Dream*3) Marella cruise, our least favourite but still a good cruise. Rated a 4 instead of five is related to entertainment. About 1800 passengers mostly from the UK, 100 from Canada. Different flavour from US origin ships, we enjoy it and find the itineraries somewhat different. We booked and flew with Sunwing from Toronto on a 737 which was a bit cramped but adequate for a 4 hour flight. Be sure to take a pen to fill in the Jamaican immigrations forms. The transfer from the airport to the ship and the boarding process was very well organized, ditto for the return. This cruise was “all inclusive”. We being 100% and 95% non drinkers, were a bit nervous but needlessly. Never noticed any problems, no lineups for drinks etc. We were not the only non drinkers on board. The ship is quite nice, all crew, waiters, etc excellent. They all obviously make efforts to keep the ship clean and enjoyable for your stay. There was some sickness aboard, don’t know how this can be avoided, once you have payed your fare most will be going, coughing or not. Our suggestion is to always use the hand sanitizers and wash your hands more frequently than usual. Shame on the gent that was finger feeding himself on the cheese counter, should have slapped his hand. There were two main formal eating areas with similar names. 47 on deck 4 has a traditional menu (fish, meat, chicken etc), Gallery 47 on deck 5 is Italian themed with an alternating A & B menu. Both were excellent, we tended to look over the menus mid afternoon to make a choice. We had breakfast and lunch in ISLANDS on deck 9 which is buffet style, lots of choice. We enjoy sharing a table for the evening meal, which we did every night, thanks folks. There are plenty of tables for two or four therefore sharing is not quite as easy on this ship but still possible, you have to ask to share. Entertainment in the Broadway Show Lounge was not as good as we have seen on other Thomson cruises, not spectacular and lacked modern recognizable music. It is the content, we have seen quite a few of the entertainment staff before and know that they are capable. On our previous Thomson/TUI cruises entertainment was spectacular, we rated it the best of any cruise. Entertainment on this cruise was a bit of a let down and the reason for a 4 star instead of 5. Very pleased that Braxi Music (Brandy and Max) plus Daniella were onboard. Their powerful performances were very enjoyable. The comedian Dave Kristian entertained us well for two shows. The piano vocalist (Guy Stoker) in “Live Room” was quite good and later he performed as “Elton Guy”. In our opinion the “Elton Guy” show should have been moved to ‘Venue” which could have accommodated the overflow crowd. The cruise featured an on board Bubbleologist (Graham Maxwell). It was a quirky, interesting show, certainly one of the most unusual that we have seen. Did not do any ship excursions as we did the same cruise two years ago. Only tendered in the Caymen Islands. In all the ports we just got off the ship and walked around. We find Havana very interesting both culturally and architecturally, great photo opportunities. In Havana we rented an old car (52 Chev) for a tour. Felt quite safe walking around, had a coffee bought some churritos. Churritos, are local delicacy, made on the street, try um. The ship literally docks right beside the sidewalk in Old Havana. We did consider the ship based bike tour of Havana but declined as the weather forecast was not good and apparently the tours go regardless of the weather. The ship is quite nice and spacious, never had much of a problem with seating lineups etc. If you need a deck lounge in the perfect sunny spot you need to stake your claim early. We were always able to find a lounge chair in the shade on at sea days. The Broadway Show Lounge can fill up, most shows are on twice, just pick your time and go early. We had an inside cabin (6089) which was quite nice and suited our needs. Clean and kept clean. Read Less

This was our first holiday without the kids (both started Uni) so we were looking forward to a relaxing time. We flew from Birmingham Premium Class, everything ran smoothly from checking in to the lounge, then the problems start... Premium Class is just a decent economy with minimal extra room and no real support for your legs when reclined if you wanted a sleep, also we sat to the rear of premium (by the toilet) and we had a set of two couples who thought it would be a good idea to stand around this area and act like they were down the pub having no regard for other passengers and the flight attendants seemed oblivious to it and in the end I had to speak to them which is quite embarrassing my advice is save your money go economy and spend what you save on either upgrading your room or drinks package. On arrival at Montego Bay it was crazy we had to wait in a hot non air conditioned corridor for over an hour which we thought was for customs but actually was the lack of coaches to take us to the ship. At this stage people around us were getting irate (complaining, swearing being quite aggressive to airport staff) and all was adding to the stress levels which probably could have been avoided with a little communication to let everyone know the process. The bus journey was fine and when we arrived at the terminal it was chaos again no structure and people pushing in and nobody taking control. We finally got our cards and went to our cabin (without any guidance). We decided to go for a junior suite and were quite happy, it was clean and had reasonable space and the balcony was a god send with the table, chairs and sunlounger although rust could be seen all outside but it was during our two weeks a sanctuary to get away from the foul language and selfish behavior of some other passengers especially around the buffet area and main pool. After arriving onboard we were told that our itinery had been changed, this led to us going to the Cayman Islands first and due to the weather our excursion being cancelled and also the same in Mexico the excursion being cancelled and finally in Cuba I had to ring around to our excursion operator to reschedule (I booked independently) then on our second week one stop in Columbia was cancelled all together, they did have an extra stop in Jamaica to compensate. I understand that the weather can not be guaranteed and it was most unfortunate that we had just one of those bad weeks but I still think if our schedule wasn't changed we would of potentially not missed out on at least one of the excursions. Overall on board I would suggest the vibe of the ship is like a 3 star Costa Brava All Inclusive Hotel so if that is not your thing (it isn't mine) you are not really going to enjoy or going to get value for money as I cannot believe that anyone who hasn't been on the beer all day can enjoy the food and entertainment provided. The flight home was better without any issues (except if you fly premium from Montego Bay you can't use the lounge unless you pay more!!!!! never know that). THE SHIP: Little tired in places I suggest a rushed refit (rust on paintwork virtually everywhere) but overall it is hard complain. CABIN: We had a Junior Suite and was so pleased we upgraded as when walking past others (Balcony / inside cabins) I don't think I would of lasted the two weeks onboard. The lounger on the balcony got plenty of use. DINING: Simply terrible, the buffet was like a war zone survival of the fittest, Main & Italian Restaurant poor service and the food had no taste and all the cuts of meat we the cheapest we tried each twice to give the benefit of the doubt but there was not doubt it was pretty much awful, the best free restaurant in the evening was the Glass House, this was because they did pizza and nobody can mess a pizza (saying that I probably won't have another this year after 7 you do get fed up. We ate twice at the Asian Restaurant, the food was good (not sure if that was because the other food onboard was so bad so our taste buds had been shot) service was poor unless you were in a big group or had a Birthday (Waiting on staff seemed more interested in singing "Happy Birthday" instead of looking after diners) numerous times I had an empty glass for over 5 minutes and I only got a refill after calling the waiter over. Drinks, we upgraded to the premium package, it was well worth it as the brands offered on the all inclusive were not what I would normally drink, also you have a 1.5ltr bottle of water delivered to your room every day so you don't have to drink the fountain stuff!!! plus you get coffee & tea from the coffee bar included, soft drinks like coke you can ask for a cans also asked for canned mixers with your spirits (normally an extra £1.00) instead of drinking the flat bottled coke / lemonade they serve (believe me it does make a difference). ENTERTAINMENT / ACTIVITIES: The shows in the main theatre were extremely poor they had lots of energy but no direction I am sure if they listened to the shows themselves they would be distraught on how bad they sounded. Each week they had a comedian which was really the only decent entertainment over the two weeks. Resident musicians were ok Activities - Don't bother!!! SERVICE: Our Cabin Boy Carlos was fantastic on the first two days he was for ever trying to please and I like my privacy and said to him that I know he was only trying to impress but I enjoy our space after that he respected that and was first class efficient and did what ever we asked and the room was always cleaned properly. Other staff were poor in the main not sure if they had not had the correct training or that they just could be bothered. Captain Chris and The Entertainment Directors daily announcements were mainly annoying (Captain was either Bobby Dazzler or Cracking sure he thought it was endearing but just got on your nerves after three days) The daily news was a joke also what a waste of paper never changed other than a few lines about the next port of call, one thing that did entertain us was they had one section about different craft beers they had changing every day as a special, every day we would check and day one Hobgobblin day two Hobgobblin yes you have it everyday. PORTS & EXCURSIONS: We had three excursions cancelled due to weather / not going to port of call, which is understandable but annoying as was down to the change of schedule possibly?? The shore excursions that we did manage to go on were mainly booked through the ship and I have to admit they were very good and we felt extremely good value for money and would recommend if anyone goes to Costa Rica to do the Zip Wire tour we did it in torrential rain but it was still amazing and the photo / video package they offer after is really fairly priced. We sailed on this ship in May 2017 and had a fantastic holiday. Flight from Birmingham to Montego Bay was long, transfers to ship were good and timely. Cabin the smallest I've ever seen. Cabin service was excellent. Attendant even went looking for, and found, our missing luggage. Poor service at bars and in restaurants. Queues often caused people to get irate.Although some staff , as always, are the except. Poor quality food, grey fish and rubber chicken, on one occasion. Many meals returned uneaten. Best food was often in the buffet, unfortunately I prefer not to eat my main meals here. Poor entrainment, shows were OK and comedian good , but bands drab and soulless. Decorations, for Christmas, were nice but there was was no atmosphere at all. People were grumbling all around you and the general feeling of dissatisfaction wears you down. Ports visited were excellent as was the excursion we went on. Read Less

Overall this was a good Holiday but I booked this last minute and paid half of what some people on board paid, if i had paid the full price I would have been very disappointed. Firstly the ship ex Royal Caribbean,Supposed to have been refurbished a 6 months previously and to be honest the ship looked in good condition a few bits here and there could be improved and tidied up and a few repairs are needed, but don't let that put you off. Staff from almost every part of the ship were very helpful polite, friendly & hard working I never had a bad experience with any of them, service with a smile. Food & Drinks were excellent most of the time there was the odd occasion when a meal may be not what you expected or to your liking but there is always food available at and mainly to a high standard. Entertainment on board was in my opinion to a high standard and the bands and Singers all over the ship were fantastic. The comedian the first week was Don McLean from Crackerjack now in is seventies was Hilariously funny, completely opposite to the one the second week Tank Sherman Mid 50s using material I had heard 35 years ago. To be honest I only had three things that need to sorted to make me go on another Marella cruise again, 1) They don't have no Currency exchange on board unless you carry Sterling with you & they are happy to change that at anytime, but if you go with using credit/ Debit cards there is no way on board or on a lot of the destinations/ ports of call were you can access your money making it very awkward when ashore trying to purchase drinks and food, unless you could find somewhere that accepted plastic, We went from Montego Bay on the second week to Belize, Guatemala, Roatan Honduras & then to Mainland Honduras and at no point could draw any money out of the cash machines as most of them said they did dollars but all the machine said they were empty. 2) Destinations. The First week we went to Cayman Islands, Cuba, Cozumel & Jamaica all these destinations Are fine Plenty to do & see and enjoyed all of these, Second week though we went to Belize, Guatemala, Roatan Honduras & Honduras mainland and to be honest unless you had booked an excursion on board the ship these are not destinations i would recommend, no beaches or Clean ones to be precise other than Roatan which has a purpose made area for the cruise ship Clientele nice beaches, bars and shops. 3) Flight Cabin Staff The Flight out from Gatwick was late leaving but on the whole the experience was fine, the new Dreamliners are a great plane and Very comfortable, But the Cabin staff need to be retrained to inform us all that we do have to fill in the paperwork on board and supply the odd pen, They told us that if we were on the cruise then we didn't have to fill them out, to find out we did, we had to sit on the floor in a crowded airport and fill them out. I Would Like to thank my Cabin Cleaner who worked tirelessly to keep are room clean and tidy and the bar staff & Waiters who work hard to keep your glasses full. Read Less

Cabin 6204. We chose this cruse because we wanted to see different cities of Cuba without the hassle of travel and hotel changes. We wanted an all inclusive trip and this was perfect! And the People to People program was of interest to us and I must say the instructors on the ship were excellent and we enjoyed all of the classes. It made the trip much more interesting. Kudos to Jerry and Jorge for their excellent teaching and information, we now have a much better understanding of the country and it's history thanks to them. We had a junior balcony suite and it was very comfortable. The only thing I would say is bring a 3 way adapter for the one and only 120v electrical outlet to charge multiple devices. If you have European gear and plugs no worries. Not a lot of closet space for long items but you don't need a lot of clothes for the trip anyway. Bath and shower a little tight but it's not a big boat! I would like to say Thank you to all the crew of the Crystal. They went above and beyond in all areas to make this a trip to remember. Thanks to Raphaella for keeping us up to date on tours and tickets, she has a great big smile and was always watching out for us. Raphaella my hair is blond remember! Thanks to Martha for teaching me how to 1,2,3 and boom! I can't dance any better but I look good! Thanks to Mahley my Karaoke Queen from her King! And Vladimir (Stop the bus), thanks for the fun and games. To the cast of the theater and the band all I can say is WOW! You amazed night after night show after show. Your talent is amazing. Thanks to Big Willie and all the dining crew that made every meal an event! To Rubia; Thank you for your beautiful smile and always watching out for us and taking care of us. You were a pleasure to be around everyday. Special thanks to Danny for his never ending energy and flow of information. He was a pleasure to be around anytime of the day or night. He is like the Energizer Bunny, keeps going and going and going! And to the medical crew a special thanks also for their treatment of my minor sunburn, you were wonderful! This was absolutely one of the most enjoyable cruses that we have been on. I would recommend to everyone that if you are considering a cruse to Cuba, based on our experience this is absolutely the one to take to see the country and have a wonderful time. Thanks again to the wonderful team on the Celestyal Crystal, you were wonderful! Read Less

This objective-chronological perspective of Cuba is provided by Dr.Jorge Gonzalez Arocha, PhD , Havana University. Professor Arocha covered all important ports of call providing historical, cultural and architectural information in a colloquial manner . Each and every one of the towns visited was a vivid picture that solidified the historical, architectural and cultural presentations made on board. All shore excursions were perfectly geared to the presentation on-board, providing a platform for us to interact with the people, the music, the culture itself. This jelling experience is The Authentic Cuban Experience. As for the ship experience itself, I was pleasantly surprised. Dining Room Exp: Food was delicious and authentic. I really enjoyed my lunch and dinners, when time permitted, at The Almanthia. Jose Luis, "Rest. Captain" has a welcoming smile and handshake for everyone which makes you feel "at home". Monica and Luis are excellent members of the wait staff but they also have the quality of making you laugh, which is medicine for the soul. That's an A+ in my book. I must mention Edel and Ricardo, "Rest Capt." from LEDA Deck Rest. Also gracious hosts with a sunny disposition. Our Cabin was impeccable every day, with special towel art presented by Vivianne and Ernesto. (5th Deck) All special requests were acted on immediately. They both were so attentive, always providing service with a smile. Entertainment on board were spectacular, thematic shows, provided by a team of polifacetic artistic acrobatic-singers, MC'd by Danny-from Romania, Cruise Director. Based on this experience, I'm already planning my next Cruise with Celestyal - Crystal...Thanks for the opportunity to share, Kudos to these people who make cruising fun as well as a learning experience. First time on a cruse the Dream is not the biggest ship compared to some you see but it is mostly brits, the food is top notch propper bacon for breakfast all in all eating on the ship is better than I expected. the cabin was just big enough for two it had a drinks bar which you have to pay for if you use it don't under stand that because if you go to the bar which there are loads of you can get any of the drinks and more that you have in your cabin, or cabin steward was Norman hello Norman. The captain is always walking around and is a very nice man, One tip if you put your towel on a sun bed then lets say you go for breakfast there is a chance it will not be there when you come back for some reason if someone wants the bed your towel is on all they have to do is tell one of the crew that towel has been there for a long time with no one on it and he will take it away and you get charged £10 if it happens go to reception you will find it there. We did the Panama canal trip what an experience don't want to tell you not to do it, you make your mind up the coach we had should not be called a coach as it was a reck the rep on it she had the microphone as load as she could and you could not understand her she repeted every thing until you ears were bleeding, When we got to the boat at last we set off to the first lock and tied up we had to wait for other boats to fill the lock it took about one hour, the food on the boat is pasta which is in the price of the trip which is £93 there is beer $2 a can, It took so long to get through the locks when we got to the bus time was getting on and the driver was flat out to get us back to the ship and as i said the bus was crap the rep started her chat again which only she knew what she was talking about, not worth the money. We went to Aruba great sunbathing on there beeches, did not feel safe when docked along the Columbian ports be alert if you go ashore, Read Less

Cuban fusion We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. I wasn't looking forward to it after reading all the negative reviews. Arriving in Jamaica was a hoot, ok filling imigration forms in a corridor is not ideal but passport control none existant totally laidback typically Jamaican. The ship seemed a bit tired on the outside but what a lovely surprise once on board quite the opposite well looked after clean and everything looked reasonably new and very comfortable. The crew always busy keeping the ship clean lots of brass that was polished every day. Our Cabin steward (Mahrus) was there and made sure we had everything we required. Nothing over the week was to much trouble for him he was brilliant. We don't normally do excursions but so glad we did, the guides were all local and boy did the know their stuff, well worth the money. I'm gluten and lactose intolerant but didn't have a problem all week. We ate in Orions in the evening and there was always at least two items on the menu I could eat. The food was well presented hot and very enjoyable. The waiters were great, only negative the Head waiter (Boris) wasn't very happy when a table for two was requested. Soya was always available, so much so Natasha in Sirens brought it every morning without being asked. Afternoon tea was a big disappointment, not much for the gluten customer (a plain scone, muffin, cookie and sandwich) everyone else fabulous. Sea days great just take the opportunity to lie back and relax I did, Manchester airport was great, cases disappeared and appeared outside our cabin brilliant. The dream liner was great (we chose premium) better than British Airways newer planes I suppose. The plane coming back not so much an older plane premium not worth the extra money. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our first cruise so much so we've just booked do the Pride of Panama next year (Discovery 2). Don't be put off by negative reviews invariably by people who have cruised for years and always go with Cunard, P & O etc or so they say probably next to the engine room. All the complainers on our cruise were never above deck 4 says it all (all fur coat and no knickers). Go for it and enjoy Read Less

We chose the cruise because we had never been to this part of the World. We are not avid Cruisers and have been a a few only. It is a good way to see parts of the World and helps make up one's mind if they are worth re-visiting. The organisation of the onboard activities was very good. The Staff in general were excellent. The food was first class and there are a variety of restaurants to choose from. The only caveat was that the buffet restaurant, The Lido, was one we avoided for main meals other than breakfast as it is a bit of a free for all and by the time one has their cutlery, table etc, the food was tepid at best. However the main restaurant was excellent and the variety of choice and service were in our opinion excellent. Bear in mind that everyone is an "expert" well they think they are so our opinion may not be as others so I tend to always stick to facts and not be put off by others who may be somewhat more picky than us. The sunbeds are a bit of a nightmare and the old adage about getting there before the Germans, has been replaced by the English who believe it is their right to claim two more sunbeds than they are using. I don't know the answer to that although the crew did try, but people get very annoyed when it is pointed out that they may be somewhat selfish in what they are doing. We had a very nice time on board, the staff were excellent, and the Captain was very visible and was around most days chatting to people. We will perhaps go cruising again in maybe a few years time, and Thomsons will be most certainly one that we shall consider. Read Less

I have just returned from a cruise to the Western Caribbean on this cruise ship - Cuban Fusion followed by Pride of Panama. I did not enjoy the cruise at all and feel as though I totally wasted my money. The Thomson Dream was very tired and the ports of call were very run down and had little to offer. We had some poor weather and were unable to get into the port of Puerto Limon in Costa Rica and, for some reason, the itinerary changed after we had booked the cruise and it no longer went to Cartegna in Colombia - instead we had 2 stops in Georgetown, Cayman Islands and spent 3 days in Jamaica - 2 in Montego Bay and 1 in Falmouth which is only about 30 miles away. None of the ports we visited were really worth visiting apart from Havana and there were too many sea days where there was little to do onboard ship apart from inane quiz shows and Bingo during the day. A lot of passengers seemed to be on the cruise simply to drink from early morning to late at night and to lie on deck getting burnt. The drinking culture on board was reinforced by the Captain and Cruise Director who both told people "to have another drink" when they announced that we would not be visiting Costa Rica but would have to spend an additional day at sea! On a positive note, the evening Entertainment Team were excellent and some of the shows were outstanding. The staff in the Orion Restaurant were also very pleasant and efficient. I am afraid that we will never book another Thomson cruise - and we have been put off cruising altogether. Read Less

Embarkation in Montego Bay was fairly smooth and without any problems. Once on board the ship we were shown directly to our outside plus cabin on deck six. The cabin was large clean and well maintained. Our cabin steward was a surprise as he had been our steward on 2 previous cruises. Eating was not a problem - indeed all the eateries served good and plentiful food. The a la carte restaurants are all highly recommended especially Mistrals. The day to day shows, quizzes and live music are of a high quality as are the quiet spots like the library and the card room. Service in general is fine although it can be quite slow in the Medusa Lounge where quite often it is easier to go and get your own drinks. Now the problem - due to weather problems our complete itinerary was reversed meaning we arrived Cozumel 4 days early. This meant there were 9 ships for 8 berths and Thomson being a lot smaller than the multitude of Carnival and Royal Caribbean ships we were the ones to lose out. There was supposedly an attempt to arrange tenders to transfer us to shore but this never happened due to too large a swell at sea - things looked fairly smooth to us - which resulted in an additional day at sea and cancellation of our excursion. Overall this did not spoil our week and yes the ship is a little old but it is spotlessly clean and carries a certain air of regality that is missing in the modern floating behemoths that are the modern cruise liners of today. Don't be put off - Enjoy.................. Read Less

We chose this for it being all inclusive - drinks, flights, shuttle, and gratuities. We also loved that we could do a back to back cruise on the same ship. You didn't have to disembark and then go back on. The turn over day was just like being in another port. The ship is 31 years old but is very well kept up. It was always clean and the staff was always friendly. Even staff that were higher up in rank mingled and talked with the passengers. We also loved that it started in Jamaica instead of Florida. We had very few complaints. One complaint would be how slow the elevators were. Because of my husband's health, there were times that he couldn't do the stairs. The shore excursion people didn't push their excursions. They were just as helpful if you asked what the best way was to do our own thing in the ports of call. The food was good and there was always plenty of it. The broadway shows were great some nights and not so great other nights. But there was always something to do if that didn't suit your tastes. The comedians on board were British as this ship is from the UK, so we often missed out either because of not understanding them or because the British humour is a little different than ours. We would fo Thomson again in a heart beat, but I don't think that there is any other cruises that they offer to Canadians. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was a back to back (Cuban Fusion and Mayan Treasures) both of which we loved the itinerary of. The dream is a lovely old girl and stands up to the test of time beautifully. we chose Thomson because of the All-Inclusive nature of the package. It was great to check in our cases at Birmingham and not have to worry about them again, as they'd be delivered to our cabin door. Our cabin was an outside plus (Mid-Ships, Deck 9) and was lovely. plenty of room, for clothes and our cases stored neatly behind the settee. Bed was made up into a double and was one of the most comfortable we'd ever slept in on a holiday. Our housekeeper Cristina looked after us with an excellent service. All the staff were some of the most helpful we've ever come across and are a credit to Thomson, The Dream and her Captain. Food was always a treat and there was something for everyone. We did however really really enjoy the "Kora La" Asian Cuisine restaurant. the food was to die for and of sizable portions too. The entertainment was plentiful, varied and of an excellent standard. our twice daily Captain's update was one of our highlights' as he made his announcements amusing. I could go on and on about our experience aboard the Dream, however I won't. All I'll say is try her yourself. you wont be disappointed !!! Read Less

Just come back from a wonderful week on my first cruise. I thought the ship was lovely (despite being old), clean, new upholstery, lots of places to relax and get away from people. I was blown away by the entertainment. Enjoyed dining with others and alone. Service, food, organisation all surpassed my expectations. We enjoyed the trips, a spa treatment and just watching the sun set with a pina colada in the hand. Everything went smoothly and I would like to congratulate Thompson - I will be back. Pride of the Panama programme was very varied. Essentially we had a day at sea, a rainforest day (Costa Rica), an engineering day (Panama - quite thrilling), a day in a lovely Spanish inspired town Cartagena (Colombia), a beach day from the beautiful Swan Hotel (Santa Marta/Roderedo), a relaxing day at sea back to Jamaica, short trip to Rose Hall sugar plantation house (Jamaica) before flying home. Great variety and easy to do if you are not very mobile. Wish we could have stayed on for Mexico, Cuba and Cayman's - maybe next time. Read Less

Thomson Dream Mayan Treasures 24 Jan – 31 Jan 2017 We are Canadian, cruise was booked through sunwing.ca, the advertised price included the cruise and return airfare from Toronto to Jamaica. This was our 3rd time on the Dream. We were originally attracted by the somewhat different itineraries. We have done other land based holidays and cruises in between. The Thomson Dream is an English cruise ship, almost all the passengers are from the UK. The food and entertainment has an English flavour. Flight and boarding the ship were smooth and uneventful. The Dream is an older/smaller ship carrying about 1500 passengers. There are no balconies but there is a full promenade/walk around on deck 9. Our cabin was on deck 10 outside, this was a bit larger than the inside cabins that we normally book. All the cabins that we have had, have been very suitable. All the staff, cleaners to captain are very friendly and are obviously working hard to keep the ship in good shape. Food is available in three main locations and a couple of extra charge restaurants plus burgers and pizza at the pool. We tended to have breakfast and lunch at the Lido, tea at Mistrals, and dinner in the Orion. Best feature of the Orion for dinner is sharing a table with 2-4 of your fellow passengers. Thanks folks for the great conversation along with an excellent meal. The Orion menu also has extra charge items, these tend to be larger meat dishes. We had one extra charge meal at Kora La, more room, nice meal, but we missed the shared table. Best meal of the cruise for myself was the last night in the Orion, it just ticked all the boxes. The Orion has plenty of small tables for those not wanting to share. Entertainment, hard to believe that 10 people can present such quality entertainment twice on 6 nights. There are 12 different shows, you would have to be onboard for two weeks to see all (not a bad idea!). The entertainers also perform occasionally in the Medusa and do dancercise and walk a mile(4 laps=1 mile) on the at sea days. The 7th night featured a comedian Jay McGee, told jokes and sang, quite good. Jay also did a late night routine. The entertainment is, was and continues to be the BEST that we have ever experienced on a cruise ship. Thanks, saw most shows twice. There is another band that plays in the Medusa, seemed to be popular, we never sat there. Other members of the staff do the usual contests karaoke etc. You have no doubt read some poor reviews. It is an older boat, some of the comments are true. We met a few onboard that were not happy, but most were. For ourselves the Dream is a fun friendly ship that we have had three great/fun cruises on. If we could book a Med cruise from Canada we would. Ports: Cozumel – We just walked around the port, mostly souvenir or jewelry stores. There is an interesting museum in walking distance. Costa Maya – A newer man made port with the usual shops. We took the shuttle to the fishing village. The village has a beach, it’s touristy. Had a good time here. Return by taxi. The fares are fixed at $3 each way, quite reasonable. Belize – Ship anchors quite a distance from the port, you travel in large transfer craft to the port with its usual shops. We hired a taxi for an hour for a tour of Belize city. Interesting but not the nicest town. If nothing else just take the transfer craft in and back, it’s a nice ride. Roatan – Booked a ship tour that included a semi-submersible coral reef tour. This tour was excellent and well worth it. Roatan is the kind of place that we would consider for a holiday. We did not do any of the “Ruins” tours as we have seen them in the past. Misc: The Thomson Dreams onboard currency is Sterling – £. This is not a problem for foreigners as it is all done on your credit card. Thomson do charge 2.5% for the use of credit cards. Possible to avoid the surcharge by depositing cash (£) or possibly using a debit card. Some credit cards charge a 2.5-3% foreign transaction fee, some (Amazon Visa is one) do not. Take US$. It’s the universal currency in the Caribbean. Useful for tips and local tours/shopping. Make sure you have a pen on the aircraft, customs/immigration forms to fill out. Third time on the Dream, we still got lost! Bill & Brenda from Canada Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary, the brochure description and travel agent recommendations to celebrate a special birthday. Dreamliner flight was fine, except for the poor entertainment offer which made the 9 hour flight appear much longer. Food was acceptable quality. On the return flight, the food and staff were less good and the cabin was extremely hot. It was only on landing that we were told that an air conditioning motor had stopped working, poor communication. Montego Bay airport and transfer was a joke, kept waiting in an airless corridor for buses to transport to the ship, then even longer in the port hall waiting for passes etc. Also the, as we found out later, every present photographers, who throughout the 2 weeks pestered us to have photographs taken in corridors and any spare space they could find. Such an annoyance. Food in the buffet restaurants was better in Sirens than in Lido which as per other reviews, was often dirty and messy. Orion restaurant was far better and we were lucky to have excellent service from Noel, his assistant Ryan and Raymond the sommelier. We called them the dream team. Breakfast was fine except that cold toast was brought to the table the minute you sat down, not really acceptable, however this was a minor issue. Our cabin was spotless, however it was very dated, not the refurbished vessel we had been sold! In one area of the ship there was a constant smell of sewage so we were glad that was not near our cabin. Captain Richard was a lovely man and his announcements were always good. Broadway lounge entertainment was of a good standard and the costumes were excellent. Entertainment in other areas of the ship were very overpowering for those, like us, who wished to relax quietly. Very "Hi-de-hi" quizzes and bingo, great for those who like it but not for all guests, hence there should have been other areas available without the need to move to avoid. Bar staff were mixed, some were excellent, others less good. Thank goodness for the "Dream News" which displayed the opening times of bars/restaurants as these varied from day to day. We did several excursions, however weather did spoil some of these, no-one's fault, but overall of an acceptable standard, although in Cozumel, our bus, along with others was taken to the "main shopping area" where we had 45 minutes, we were dropped outside a restaurant which it was obvious later had been "recommended" by the tour company. Very few shops were open and it was rather a run down area, however on re-boarding the bus and driving further along the road, there were some lovely busy squares full of shops, cafes etc, obviously the actual main shopping district, but we did not have enough time to walk there or visit. Very disappointing. The itinerary of our trip was changed from the original one booked and there was no mention of this prior to our departure. Again this was a common thread amongst guests' conversations. Like other reviewers, we would have welcomed a deck plan as it took several days to orientate ourselves. Main negatives: Cost of Wi-Fi - extortionate, should be free in this day and age. Having to pay for water (despite being all-inclusive). Tea and coffee facilities provided in rooms but not water! Drinks in Explorers' Lounge were not included in our All Inclusive Drinks Package, which we paid extra for, as only "Premium" guests could access these for free (additional cost of £10 per day if we wished to access this!), but we could pay a surcharge if we wished, £1.20 per cup! Lack of one quiet lounge inside for inclement weather or just to sit and relax, we spent a lot of time moving from lounge to lounge to get away from the poor duos performing on the various stages, surely one lounge could be kept for entertainment leaving another clear for quiet guests. Not all lounges serving drinks throughout the day and I feel that they should all have been available at all times. Couldn't just sit in one lounge and get a drink without moving at some time. This would have been invaluable when the weather was so bad on several days. Persistent photographers in your face, trying to drum up business. Lack of implementation of dress code policy, many guests wearing shorts of an evening in the bar areas. Overall, we were very, very disappointed, as were numerous guests who expressed similar comments to ours. Thomson have a lot of work to do to bring this cruise up to an acceptable standard. Luxury holidays in other parts of the world are far better quality and value. We will never cruise again following this very disappointing experience. Read Less
