Wanting to go to Bermuda from Florida, the only ship available was the Carnival Elation from Jacksonville, an eight day cruise beginning April 7th. My husband and I have sailed on Carnival before, the last time being in the winter of 2015. Although we do not frequent the clubs or the casino, we have always enjoyed the comfort of the cabins, the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff, the shows and the food. I am not going to make a day-by-day critique of the cruise, which in itself was fine - we got to Bermuda and back safely again - but there were highs and lows of the shipboard experience, a major part of what we go on cruises for. First the highs - the ship was very clean, the staff were very attentive and friendly as always, the bed was comfy, and I liked the well-stocked library. The main gift shop was adequate. There were ample places to hang out, both outside and in. The embarkation and disembarkation went well. The shore excursion desk was helpful, even though we decided on a last-minute tour. Now for the lows - the amenities and the food were a great disappointment from what we had previously experienced on Carnival. Our cabin (Ocean View) although adequate, was tiny and lacked even a chair on which to sit and put on our shoes. There was no place other than the bed on which to read or watch TV. (There was a little backless seat under the vanity.) While we still received the charming towel animals on our bed each day, service, which had previously been twice a day was now cut down to once a day - our choice of morning or evening -and the feeling of being pampered was lost. Well, we could live with that, although the lack of a place to sit was very uncomfortable. The biggest negative was the food. What happened to the almost-always delicious food on Carnival? We did not have one meal in the dining room that was above average and most were below. The portions at dinner were tiny. One person at our dinner table asked if the main course was actually an appetizer. The Lido was stripped clean after the main meals and that included all the desserts that were once put out for after dinner coffee at our leisure. After dinner time, absolutely no desserts anywhere to be found! Oh yes, there is soft swirl ice cream... I understand that desserts were put out after midnight or eleven p.m. but I for one am not eating/drinking cake and coffee at that hour. Breakfast on the Lido was OK. Lunch on the Lido buffet was pretty much awful, with the exceptions of the grill and the salad bar, both very good.) The dining room for breakfast and lunch were much better than the Lido. Carnival has even cut TV. I know some are thinking, you're going on a cruise and you're watching TV? Well, yes, one time Dancing With the Stars was on...now there are no networks except news, classic movies and cartoons. OK, so that's minor, but another example of cuts in service. There were a couple other irritations, but nothing to mention, as perhaps it was just our perception at the time. All in all, a nice sail to Bermuda, but Carnival apparently is cutting our shipboard experience along with the budget and will likely be losing more than a few customers as well. Read Less

First cruise to Bermuda out of Jacksonville. 8 days of heaven. Grand deck G36 was a fabulous cabin, quiet and we had a sofa !!!!!! The Elation has been updated and was very clean and comfortable. We participated in the Chefs Table for the first time and enjoyed it very much. The overall dining menu was large but most food was average. I have had much better food on other ships. (the shrimp should be bigger than the batter) Cabin service was perfect, thanks to Mary Ann. Bermuda was beautiful and Half Moon Cay is the most wonderful port. The biggest problem was the casino air filtration system and the people causing the problem. PLEASE stop smoking now, it was miserable. I took more money home than ever. I just could not stay in there long :( Otherwise I LOVE TO CRUISE and am thankful I was able to go ! Read Less

Very disappointing sums it up pretty well for the January 19 sailing of the Fascination. My expectations for this cruise weren't very high to start with because it was mainly to just get away for a few days. All I expected was just some decent entertainment and good food. I thought the worst was over when we finally boarded the ship 9 hours late but I was wrong. Just one suggestion to Carnival... offer the text notification during the online registration. Had we not been at one of the Park and Cruise hotels we wouldn't have known about the first delay. We did get a recorded phone message for the second and third. The entertainment was lacking in my opinion unless you consider infomercials (programs demonstrating products Carnival or their preferred vendors sell), bingo for an additional fee, or having portraits taken entertainment. There were three shows. A juggler who was good but not really enough to build an entire show around, the guest talent show was pretty entertaining, and the Motown show was good. There were two comedians, one funny, one not so much. Each performed 2 adult only shows. One had two different sets; the other seemed to only have one set. I only lasted a few minute into his second show because he was telling the same jokes as the first. The food overall was pretty good. We ate breakfast at the buffet every morning. It was standard breakfast fair and got much better once I found the made to order omelet station. Lunch was one day at the buffet, one day at the deli, and two days in the dining room. We ended up with dinner in the dining room all except one night. I went to the buffet the second night and the food wasn't edible. Pretty much everything I got at the buffet (whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner), with the exception of the made to order omelet, was cold or lukewarm at best. I wasn't expecting much from the ports based on past reviews. I did the walking tour of Nassau I found on Cruise Critic, did a little shopping and went to Junkanoo Beach, all easily done in the 8 hours we were in port and easy walking distance from the port. I went to Port Lucaya in Freeport. Overall it left me thinking I must not be up for all the fun on the Fun Ship.... Read Less
