We chose Viking because we had a great experience with Viking three years ago on a Rhine cruise. The cabin was beautiful, but there was nightly work being done on the deck above our cabin that woke us up almost every night. We complained, but it still happened. Also, upon boarding we had difficulty finding our cabin. When we boarded the river cruise, there was a crew member escorting every guest to their cabin. On the cruise ship, we were on our own and it was more difficult to find. Our cabin was in the front on the upper deck where only one set of elevators actually went to our floor. The restaurants were good, but choices were limited in some places. For example at the pool, it was the same menu every day. It would have been nice to have the restaurants feature foods from the area we were traveling. The only restaurant that did this was the World Cafe and that food was like cafeteria food. The staff, just like on the river cruise, was outstanding, the only difference was that they seemed over worked, and they talked about it. They were working long hours with short down time and they mentioned this to the passengers. We had two problems with shore excursions. In Santorino Viking should not have allowed "leisure walkers" to go on the shore excursions. The hills were too severe and the sidewalks too uneven. The guide did her best, but a few people on our tour and a person we ate dinner with basically sat on the bus the whole time. When we were on the river cruise cruise, Viking had a modified versions of the daily tours for "leisure walkers" which were the over 55 and had difficulty walking, had walkers ,etc. In Dubrovnik we had a tour guide who was not sensitive to the over 55 crowd. In Dubrovnik they have their own currency and all of the public rest rooms required exact change with that currency. Having arrived just that morning and not knowing this several people on out tour needed to use the rest room and had no where to go. They ended up walking back to the ship and missing out on the rest of the tour. Sounds crazy, but it's a problem for the over 55 group. I would love to do more cruising with Viking, but it is too expensive. It's a special occasion cruise company for us. i'd like to see you stop mailing me so many catalogs. I'm in the direct mail business, so I know how expensive these are. I get a piece of Viking mail almost daily; some days multiple pieces, plus getting emails a couple days a week. Perhaps if you saved money with the mailings you could reduce the price of your cruises. Read Less

We have been on a lot of cruises and this was truly amazing. On our way to the ship, my husband mentioned that he hoped this lived up to his very high expectations. He was not disappointed. Unfortunately, this cruise has spoiled us for any other cruise line. The (superior stateroom) cabin (and bathroom) was larger than on most ships. The food everywhere was wonderful - not only the best food I've had on a cruise ship but often, the best food I've had anywhere. The ship is beautiful - elegant and tasteful. The service was excellent. Embarkation and disembarkation were fast and smooth. The tours (optional and included) were top notch. Almost everything you could want (wifi, wine or beer with meals, tours, specialty restaurants, specialty coffees, fresh squeezed orange juice) were included. The spa was lovely and relaxing. There were interesting lectures to help you understanding of the ports we were visiting. The other passengers could only be described as "adult - well traveled and interesting" This is not a cruise for children or people just looking for a loud/ drunken good time. I am sure we will cruise with Viking again. We had originally gone on a Viking River cruise and were very impressed by how well run and excellent it was. When we heard about the start up of their ocean line, we booked a cruise immediately. The staff was beyond helpful and went out of their way to make our trip perfect. They truly succeeded. Read Less

Beautiful ship, friendly staff, excellent food. Never seemed crowded with only about 900 guests. Everything went smoothly. Stateroom was top notch. Don't think I'd ever go on a large cruise ship again after going on the Viking Star. It was a luxurious experience. Even the public restrooms were first class. There are plenty of common areas, beautifully decorated in Scandinavian style. Classical trio played most nights. Oldies rock band played at night poolside with dance floor. Talks by subject matter experts about the region were excellent. This cruise/ship is not great for children. In fact, there were no children on this cruise. If you want a cruise with children, I'd look elsewhere. The embarkation process was a breeze. The disembarkation process was very well organized and went very well. Much less hectic than a 3000 person cruise. We chose all the included shore excursions except for one. All were run by local guides who spoke very good English and had a great knowledge of their area. The history in these ports is very interesting. The only included excursion that was a disappointment was the one in Athens. That one needs or improvement or it would be best to take one of the upgraded ($) excursions. We had a Penthouse Veranda stateroom. It was larger than our friend's Deluxe Veranda. Had more storage furniture and area to move around. We'd recommend a Penthouse Veranda. They extra cost is worth it. However, that bathroom (a nice size with good shower) is the same for either stateroom. We liked the cruise so much, while on the cruise we signed up for an Eastern Caribbean cruise in January 2017 on the same ship! Read Less

We had always wanted to visit Turkey, Greece and the Dalmatian coast, and this Viking cruise from Istanbul to Venice gave us that and more. The brand-new Viking Star is an extraordinarily beautiful and comfortable ship. The courteous, friendly and cheerful staff gave us five star service every moment of every day. We had been a bit nervous about being among 900 passengers, worrying that we might experience lines and crowds, or feel herded. We need not have worried. The Viking team made getting on and off the ship, going in to dine, and all shore excursions totally convenient and seamless. We never waited or felt rushed or herded, and excursion groups numbered only about 35 people, similar to river cruises we have taken. The educational programs and entertainment were top notch. And the FOOD! We tried all of the half dozen or so venues and loved them all, from the casual World Cafe and Mamsen's to the table service Restaurant, to gourmet Italian cuisine at Manfredi's and nouvelle cuisine at Chef's Table. We did not dare to get on a scale when we got home. Of course, the cruise itinerary is what attracted us in the first place. We felt like we had traveled back in time in our visits to ancient Troy, Ephesus, Athens, and Santorini, and when we walked around the medieval walls of Kotor, Montenegro, and Dubrovnik and Pula, Croatia. It is a beautiful part of the world, and we feel fortunate to have been able to visit it in such a luxurious way. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the many destinations we had wanted to see, and this one checked off a lot of them. We were lucky enough to go into Istanbul 4 days early, probably one of the last cruises going in there. We booked our pre-trip seperately from the cruise line. It was wonderful, and we hope that Istanbul and the rest of Turkey get back to some terrific tourism! A gorgeous and historically important city. The Viking Star surpassed our expectations! I don't do open water well, but we had fantastic weather while we were onboard! We got to see Troy, Epehsus, and the fabulous Santorini. We met up with our new sister ship the Viking Sea, and the whole day, start to finish, was spectacular. We sailed into the caldera side by side, on a breath-taking morning, to a whole lot of celebration with Viking! We did stop in Athens as well, but, Athens is still in a state of turmoil, and the city was a graffitti mess. We journyied up to Montenegro, and Croatia, and departed in Venice, which we did not stop at, because we had been there previously. The Viking Star was a wonderful ship, with so many different places to dine and drink and entertainment, that you never even realized there were 900 people onboard. The entertainment was good, and and the series of talks were outstanding. The specialty restaurants were fantastic! The crew was fun and friendly, and more than helpful. The spa was a dream, who else has a "snow room" onboard?? Our cabin was roomy and comfortable, and even had a free stocked mini fridge, which was replenished daily. Don't miss out trying this fabulous "Small ship"!! Read Less

We have been on over 20 cruises and I have to say this was the best overall. The ship was more like a 4 star hotel then a ship. The dining was one of the best even the buffet was great. They had Snow Crabs and Sushi every night plus the same food they had in the restaurant. The specialty restaurants were wonderful, great service and food. This is also included in the price of the cruise. Wine, beer and soda are included at lunch and dinner at no charge. High tea each day at 4pm was also a nice treat. Each day they had either a string and flute trio, guitar or piano player at tea and in the main foyer and the bottom or the staircase. Our cabin was spacious and had a large closet. The bathroom was nicer then many hotels I have been in. Plexiglas enclosed shower with a small seat. Our cabin steward was wonderful and fulfilled all our requests. Service was good in the whole ship and everyone had a smile and you could tell they all wanted to be there. Spoke to many of the crew from the Captain down and they all said they loved their jobs. Ports were wonderful and guided walking tours were included with each port. Most ports you could go back with the guide to the ship or go out on your own and take a shuttle back. I cannot say enough about this whole cruise. It was amazing. It was great not to be followed around by a photographer. We never had to walk thru noisy smoke filled casinos or listen to unruly children. Viking is the cream of the crop. Read Less

We scheduled this trip, with two other couples, 18 months in advance. We wanted to explore eastern Europen countries that we had yet to experience. Though we didn't get to see much of Istanbul, due to enhanced security, we were impressed that Viking called us to hear our input regarding other port destinations. We arrived just before sunset. We heard the call to prayer as we passed views of the mosque. That left us wanting more. Embarkation was very smooth. We boarded with only a couple of others. We were happy to find our spacious, compfortable rooms. It was Easter Sunday. Viking never fails to add a special touch, a much appreciated chocolate bunny! This was our sixth Viking experience and our first ocean journey. We experienced the passing of the shake-down voyage of the Viking Sea as the sun rose one morning. Celebrating with champagne as a helicopter captured the moments along with us was a special gift. We get attached to the well-trained staff. They enhanced our experience in every possible way. Viking is consistently amazing. Their employees are wonderful. I was impressed how spacious the ship was organized. Never did I feel as I have on large cruise ships, crowed and hurded. We were able to enjoy all aspects of The Star and found special areas to relax before dinner such as the Explorer Lounge and the pool area. I look forward to Viking cuisine, it never dissappoints. I've come to expect the delightful included excursions but the offerings of extra excursions made it difficult to choose. Regardless, we we happy with our choices. I would love to take this trip again but not until I have experienced all the other itineraries. We are booked again on the Star, May 2017. We are already looking forward to another Viking journey in welcomed comfort. This time we'll be traveling with people we met on our China trip! Read Less

We chose this cruise as it had all the destinations we wanted. We explored Istanbul in advance on our own and always felt safe, however, I certainly understand Vikings choice to take the tours off the schedule. I wish we had added more than one additional night in Venice. Way to much to explore in a day. Very much enjoyed receiving champagne on embarkation. The cabins were well appointed- loved the heated bathroom floor! Our room steward made sure we had everything we needed and checked back for questions. It was nice to choose whether we wanted to pay for an excursion or join the included. For the most part, the tour guides were very knowledgeable and we had time on our own to explore as we wanted. I have specific dietary needs and was so pleased to have a staff member assigned to dealing with this. It made travel and eating much less stressful!! The service was impeccable. Staff greeted us and spoke always. It was fun to watch the officers run down the halls and shake hands. We even had the opportunity to speak with the captain. What a open and engaging man! The weather could not have been more perfect. While there were times we had to wait for a shuttle after exploring on an excursion, the guides always made it clear where to be and how much time we had. We enjoyed some of the entertainment and had a great time at the movie under the stars- popcorn included!! Sometimes the entertainment was at times that conflicted with other things, but you always had choices. I would go again in a heartbeat. Read Less

The ship was very new. Excursions, tips, and beer and wine were inclusive and we had wifi in our cabin for free. All cabins had a balcony and we wanted a luxury cabin to be pampered. Our Explorer Suite was phenomenal and the service throughout the ship was stellar. The walk in closest, bath with a view, and heated towel racks were some of my personal favorite unexpected highlights of the room. Laundry and dry cleaning were free. Coming home without a huge pile of laundry made return to reality much easier. The Viking Cruises focus more on the ports and less on a large variety of things to do on the boat. We wanted to learn about different destinations and be able to relax in between destinations. The lectures provided by on board specialists were fascinating. The additional benefit of these being recorded so we could watch them on our own schedule was an added bonus. We would definitely go again. We were on the younger side of the clientele and would have preferred some of the excursions to be more active. We had initially chosen some more active excursions, but when it came time to register, these were no longer a choice. This was our only disappointment. One caution, our Explorer Suite was on the bow on deck 3. In front of our suite was an area not open to guests but where the flags were changed and the anchor was weighed. Some mornings the anchor in particular was a bit noisy. We loved our suite and the trip so much and were so fascinated by the views and even the daily workings of the ship that this disturbance did not bother us much. However, other consumers may feel differently. Read Less

Wanted to go on a Viking ocean cruise and experience all it had to offer. I had previously experienced 2 Viking River Cruises. Viking never disappoints. Everything was perfect. Ship, cabin, excursions, food and of course the wonderful Viking employees. Love the excurs ions with the local tour guides who were most informative and very proud of their home lands. Viking cruises are elegantly casual but never stuffie . The Explorers lounge and the spa Pool area were my favorite spaces. Both calm, soothing and a great place to relax and unwind. This certainly will not be our last Viking cruise. We are looking forward to a river cruise to Portugal in the future with Viking. We enjoyed meeting the captain on several occasions. Willie Ames was the best cruise director ever. We enjoyed his humor and great smile. The food was so good we had a hard time trying to make up our minds where we eat each evening. Read Less

Absolutely fantastic. We stayed in Istanbul for two days before the cruise on our own and three days in Venice at the end of the cruise. My evaluation would be to tour the Blue Mosque and Sofia Mosque in Istanbul, and spend a few days getting to know Venice at the end of the cruise. Overall we are very pleased with the cruise and the ship. Absolutely and totally perfect in the ship's appearance, on board expectations and entertainment and food, all more than expectations. Also, the staff, especially Marta, as desk and cruise ship liason for rooms and people traffic, she was excellent. Our rooms were more spacious than our former Viking Cruise rooms and of course the room stewards we very attentive. I used room service for late night delivery and that was very efficient. All staff were friendly and took the time to get to know us and tell us about their home town base and when they might travel again. We highly recommend Viking to our friends and family and will travel again with Viking. This was our third cruise, the past, which is our favorite of all, Amsterdam to Budapest, and then China. All so many memories to cherish. Thank you, Viking and staff! Read Less

Gift shop needs to be 3x bigger and have many more items related to the area you are traveling in. I simply can't say enough about the staff. They work so hard but smile, greet, help and assist every minute. They are wonderful. Service was outstanding. My only criticism is that I find the pricing and constant promos and sales very confusing. And, I think Viking needs to honor singles more fully. Millions of singles wish to travel but have to pay for 2 on a Viking Cruise. Many other cruises, tour programs and hotel packages offer much better prices for those who travel alone. On Viking, there is no break at all - you pay for 2. The free 24 hour room service is outstanding. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we are looking forward to another with Viking. The size of the ship was perfect, very well run by all crew personnel in all areas of the ship. While we don't have another to compare with, I can honestly say "why bother". It was exactly what we wanted as far as a cruise experience. It's topnotch in our view, the layout of all areas were were so well designed, it made it feel even larger than it was. The crew members were extremely efficient and polite. We loved that the dining areas provided different ambiance and all were very satisfying to our palate. We thought the excursions were very good, but perhaps needed more detail on some of them as to the demand of areas for walking, etc. We had no problems, but did help some who were having difficulty getting around. The cruise and tour directors provided exceptionally detailed information regarding the ports being visited. It was especially nice to be able to review those presentations on the TV in your room. A nice surprise was the beauty of the walled cities and harbors of Kotor and Dubrovnik. This is definitely a cruise to be taken by everyone - for the beauty and history of the sites. Finally, we loved the 'all-inclusive' aspect of the cruise. Made it so simple, yet relaxing (and no formal requirement). Read Less

It has been our dream to visit Istanbul, Kusadasi, Santorini, Monenegro, Croatioa, & Pula. Spending the last day in Venice on our own at Viking's expense just added to our enjoyment. There were some issues with flights but Viking did their best to resolve them. Tours were included. This is great since other cruises always charge extra. Our guides were local and knowledgeable. They were able to answer our questions and provide insights only locals would know. Food was fabulous. Dining experience at Manfredi's and especially the Chef's table were not to be missed. This was our first Viking Ocean cruise and our nineteenth overall ocean cruise and it not only was the best but it was worth the wait as every detail on board far exceeded our expectations. We choose Viking travel and therefore the trip from home to the Viking Star was as expected, effortless. Staterooms are comfortable and housekeeping was impeccable. There are four included dining rooms to choose from, ranging from including self service, one main and two speciality. The menus had a wide variety of entrees and both the quality of the food and the waiters at each were the best of any cruise line. Entrainment was quite personal as there were great cabaret performances alone with solo musicians in various public areas. There is at least one shore excursion that is included at each port of call and also other special interest ones at additional cost. All of the included far exceed any other cruise lines as Viking seems to understand their customers excursion expectations. Read Less

Every attempt was made to meet any special needs. We grew quite fond of our servers and they felt like family. Our only disappointment was the included excursion in Athens. Would have opted for an extra excursion. Otherwise the way the folk were moved about on buses was seemless-no waiting. I would suggest if some folk are not back on the bus at the designated time, the bus should leave. Adults need to be responsible. We were very pleased with our stateroom, much larger than the river cruise line and a very nice sized bathroom. Services at the spa more than met our expectations-and the facilities were beautiful. Entertainment and the speakers were unique and quite a surprise. About the only thing I would improve upon was the variety of on-board shopping-very sparce. The ship is fantastic! Our first Viking experience, this was the centerpiece of a 45 day "Grand Tour". The crew is outstanding, friendly, attentive and eager to please. The cabins are very comfortable and quiet. We had one of the suites on the top deck with a huge balcony and the views were spectacular. Note: Remember the adage POSH because the coastal views entering ports are awsome. The F&B was in the top 3 of all cruises we have done. The spa was awesome, got massages every 4th day, the entertainment was ok, but we don't take cruises for high school musicals...the only negatives were the shore excursions. In a word - awful. Poorly organized, WAY OVER PRICED, amaturish guides (I actually had to correct one guide on facts), bad food, a real rip off. We canceled all our add on extra tours after the first 4 ports and hired local guides, cars and drivers for the remaining 19 days. Also some of the ports are a total waste, like Tulon, just a stop for stop sake it seemed...nothing there, not even decent dining. Would book the ship again but just for the crusing...I'd do a Trans Atlantic before doing another multi-destination with them, or a river cruise. Read Less

This was our first cruise so I do not have a comparison. However it met or exceeded all my expectations. Our cabin was well appointed with adequate storage space. The bed and chairs were very comfortable. We had access to laundry equipment which we used as we were traveling after the cruise. Our attendant, Arya was very thorough in keeping our cabin clean and well stocked. In fact we were impressed with the quality of service we received in every area. The restaurant managers, waiters, and wait staff were very friendly and attentive. All the members of the staff were helpful, courteous and accommodating. We were very impressed with the food in the World Cafe. We actually enjoyed it more than the specialty restaurants. In fact one meal at Manfredi's was unappetizing and the fish at the The Restaurant was flavorless. But otherwise the food was very good with a wide variety and some dishes were made to order. We thought the excursions were excellent with the exception of the Underground Cisterns. Although the Cisterns were unique and interesting , we only spent 30 minutes there and the rest of the tour was just wasting time. I did not think it was worth the money. The others were great. The Complimentary ones were as good as the optional. Loved Kotor and Dubrovnic. All the guides were wonderful. We were disappointed we missed Pula. We did not take advantage of visiting Venice at 5:00 pm as a replacement of Pula as we were going to stay two night after disembarking. We had made our own arrangements prior to the Cruise in Istanbul and in Venice. In Istanbul, we stayed for two nights in the old City at the Seven Hill Hotel. It is small older boutique hotel with a fabulous rooftop restaurant. We stayed at a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel that was charming. The Cruise was an experience of a life time and we would definitely consider another Viking Cruise. Read Less

I rated this cruise as Very Good only because we had no other cruise to rate it against. The Viking Star was great. Our cabin was surprising in how spacious and comfortable it was. The service was very good, nothing was too much trouble and any little "wrinkles" were ironed out very quickly. The food onboard had only problem - it was so good you just wanted to eat more. The entertainment on board was varied, interesting and enjoyable. We only went on the included shore excursions and found them to be very informative with good and knowledgeable tour guides. Leaving the ship each day for our excursion was easy, very organised and well managed by the staff. As I said we are only novice cruisers and apart from a short Alaskan cruise and a river cruise (with a different Company) this was our first big cruise and we loved it. Viking Star impresses with its excellent food, spacious and beautiful Explorers Lounge, multiple pools and stunning spa. The attentive, friendly staff excels at providing service above and beyond expectations. We enjoyed the very talented entertainers, who performed diverse shows nightly. We signed up for all the included tours, most of which were quite well done and interesting. The cruise offers many fascinating lectures and port talks. There is plenty to do, and we could not fit as much of it into our schedule as we'd have liked, even without opting for additional tours. The inclusive nature of the cruise allowed us to enjoy lots of amenities at no additional charge including a tour lasting generally 4-5 hours in each port, dinner in Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, use of the spa (not treatments) including the thermal pool and snow room as well as the sauna and other facilities, 24 hour room service, daily high tea, movies on demand, self service launderettes with detergent, stateroom robes and slippers. The ship's facilities are lovely with lots of spacious and beautiful public lounges for reading and relaxing. The stateroom is comfortable with plenty of storage areas and a more than adequate bathroom with a glass enclosed shower. The larger than expected tubes of nice quality toiletries include shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and bar soap. We experienced occasional minor glitches but nothing disconcerting. The coach transfer between the airport and the ship could be enhanced by having a bit of a tour en route. The Viking representative on our coach spoke minimal English and, therefore, could not answer our questions as to what we were seeing along the way. The Explorers' Desk staff were very helpful when we stopped by with questions, but they were apparently too busy to answer the phone on numerous occasions. A word of warning: Be prepared to pay to use toilets during many of the tours, generally 1/2 - 1 Euro, something I find annoying but no fault of Viking's. When shopping, plan to negotiate the price. Currency varies from country to country, but most merchants accepted Euros and often dollars, even if another local currency existed, and guests gave guides and drivers gratuities in all of these currencies. We were pleased with our Viking Star cruise beyond our expectations. Relax, explore, enjoy! Read Less

We have just returned from an Empires of the Mediterranean cruise on the new Viking Star. We travelled with four friends, two of them were from Canada and two, like us, from the UK, there were six of us all together, all seasoned Viking River Cruise passengers. We all booked Deluxe Veranda cabins, originally in a line but our Canadian friends who booked through America were moved up a deck, their cabin was identical to ours lower down and we all decided that these cabins gave us what we wanted and a larger cabin would have been no better. What an amazing ship the Viking Star is, never did we consider that it was crowded or couldn’t cope with the almost 1000 passengers on board. There are probably not enough superlatives to describe the whole 10 days. There were many different dining opportunities, none of which are formal but the Chef’s Table and Manfreddi’s are smarter than other eating places. There are more informal dining opportunities around the swimming pool, the Explorers lounge and in the World Café, with a set menu (which changes each day) with three or four options and a standard steak, chicken, salmon option in The Restaurant. The message from every member of the crew is…if you want it it can be done…We ate burgers and hot dogs, one day, in the swimming pool area and raided the ice cream in the café afterwards. The on-board entertainment was terrific and should have suited every need. There were exceptional speakers who were historians, scientists and diplomats. The musical team were amazing…Beatles, Abba, Opera, The Rat Pack and Spoof James Bond themed shows. The versatility of the entertainment team came to the fore when additional lectures were put on for an unscheduled day at sea. The shore excursions were well organised with good briefings re what to expect re walking and weather. Some of the guides were better than others and unfortunately there were just far too many people in our group for The Acropolis in Athens, the guide rushed on, and there seemed to be thousands of other visitors that day too. The Viking Star has been well thought out, with lots of public areas. We never felt we were in an area and waiting for a seat or that any area was crowded. The Scandinavian edge is evident with well-designed and comfortable chairs and sofas everywhere, with wonderful art adorning every wall and surface and some quirky items of furniture. Our arrival on the ship was not a smooth as it could have been, the port authorities adding to the angst as well as the rain…but the problem was dealt with and compensated for immediately. A planned stop in Pula did not happen because of high seas but the sail into Venice in daylight more than made up for that. Read Less

We flew direct to Istanbul [ I was not aware I could have stayed a few days prior to sailing - which I would have done as I had not visited Istanbul & by the time we got from the airport to the ship there was no time to venture out to explore before dinner]. I was not impressed with the way our transfer from the airport to the ship was handled. We were at passport control for about 2 hours altogether it was very hot - no air con. On a previous cruise I did not see my cases until on board the ship but on this occasion our luggage was treated with no respect [ my case was put at the very bottom of an overly large pile so I requested it be removed as I feared it would buckle under the weight. We walked along side our luggage & had to cross a road & then across a large car park to get on the coach. My husband did not have wheels on his hand luggage & had to carry it for himself!! So not a great start. However once we got to our cabin & freshened up things became so much better - we were very happy with out cabin. Deluxe balcony. Dinner was excellent [although there was a problem with our booking time - which was resolved in due course & we had to wait 30 mins]. Things dramatically improved from the next day onward & then for the whole duration of our cruise. We enjoyed every day, the excursions, the entertainment, the food [ absolutely fab every time]. The staff were amazing - most couldn't do enough for us. I couldn't fault a thing! The Viking Star was beautiful - I was so impressed with her - a truly beautiful & classy ship. It was a pleasure to sail on her. Read Less

This cruise was the best ever. The ship was beautiful and the staff very helpful and polite. They went the extra mile to make sure that we had everything we needed to make it the perfect cruise. The food was superb, both in the restaurant and the two speciality restaurants. At lunchtime we went to either the casual dining on the top deck or to the speciality burgher bar next to the pool and there was plenty of variety to choose from. The cabin was lovely and light, and every cabin has its own balcony with comfy chairs which we used a few times but, to be honest, the seating areas around the pools were so comfortable that we made full use of them and, at no time, did we struggle to find anywhere to seat - it was never crowded. The excursions were very informative and varied and, with the electronic hearing devices that we wore, could hear every word without needing to congregate around the tourist guide. The entertainment in the Theatre was an eye opener, with visual affects second to none. It is amazing what they can do with all this new technology. The cinema experience was great as well, as we had special nights where we could collect our packs of freshly made pop corn from the bar before taking our seats. Good variety of films too! All in all the perfect cruise - we will be back! Read Less

We did the Empires of the Mediterranean tour with a couple days under Viking's care on each end. Prior to the cruise, we arrived in Istanbul and were bused another 6 hours out to Turkey's Aegean coast. It was a very long day, Philadelphia through London to Istanbul and then the bus ride. Nice hotel, what I saw of it. The next morning, up and at 'em, we toured the ruins of Troy, and then the Gallipoli Battlefield National Park. Eye-popping, both of them. The next day, back on the bus, back to Istanbul, with stops at the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, then finally to the ship. Stateroom was great, but we could have used a tip that you put your key card in a slot by the door to work the lights! The next day, we took a cruise up and down the Bosporus. What vistas, what history! When we returned, our luggage had finally caught up with us. This was a weak spot in the travel arrangements. Viking booked us through Heathrow, with a change of airlines, and only one and a half hours layover. We made our flight (barely). Our luggage did not. If you have Viking make air arrangements (generally a good idea since it includes airport pick-up and return) don't let them do this. More layover equals more luggage. Once at sea, our stops included Ephesus, Athens, Santorini, Kotor and Dubrovnik. We were unable to dock in Pula due to high seas and arrived in Venice a day early as a result. The Viking Star is brand new and a marvelous boat. It hosts about 950 passengers, medium-sized for an ocean liner. All rooms have ocean balconies. The food is tremendous, in the buffet and the specialty and sit-down restaurants! The staff works like mad to please the guests. There are fitness rooms and other equipment here and there on board. There's a theater in the bow where they put on live shows and also lectures by some very interesting folks, the themes generally tied to our ports of call. One exception was a talk on the history of the British colony Gibraltar, which was off our route, but the guy who gave the talk used to be the territory's Governor, so we cut him some slack. Each cabin has a wall-mounted flat screen TV with some video-on-demand and replays of the lectures, in case you missed one. Access to news from the outside world was iffy. Most of the shore excursions, both included and optional, were excellent. Athens was the least: we were driven around town at breakneck speed to spend ten minutes here, and another ten minutes there. The optional dinner tour was changed without notice, to something not quite as nice but Viking refunded half its cost so all is forgiven. With two Viking cruises under our belt, my experience is the passengers are an older demographic so I'm not sure how you'd occupy children. There's a nightclub open until the wee hours for those with restless energy. I needed my rest so I'd have some energy. Post-cruise we were taken to a canal-side hotel in Venice, where we enjoyed the sights and foods. Keep in mind, all transportation in the central area is by boat. Buses are boats, taxis are boats, limousines are boats. There's a lot of water traffic wakes and you can get bounced around but good. I found it unpleasant. And San Marcos Piazza floods at high tide much of the year. That was a surprise. Read Less

We signed for this cruise because of the areas the cruise covered, especially Istanbul and after doing a Rhone River Cruise we were anxious to try the new ocean liner.....we were not disappointed. The crew was amazing and the food was outstanding. Being on a small ocean liner made the trip just that much better. The real treat was entering Venice during the day. We sailed past many of the famous landmarks including San Marco Square. Because of rough seas we were not able to go to Pula. If we had gone to Pula, we would have entered Venice in the middle of the night, so this was an added value we had not counted on. We enjoy cruising on Viking, whether it is on the river boats or ocean liners. We are already planning our next cruise which will be on the Viking from St Petersburg to Moscow. Cruising is our favorite way to travel, and with the outstanding tours that Viking includes in the cost of the trip, it is not a hard decision to choose Viking !! Read Less
