We chose this cruise to see the Panama Canal, which was the highlight and a great experience, for the family. Boat seemed aged, every thing costs an arm and a leg, and bathrooms are very small. This was a family cruise with kids, but there were very few kids on the ship. The demographic is very old, so lines are slow and the entertainment is suited for that generation. Disappointed with Princess, will not take a cruise with them again. Some of the staff were a rude on disembarkation day. Food was okay, but got a little tiring after awhile. I do want to not that generally the staff was pleasant and amenable. The ports of call were just okay. Jamaica was probably our least favorite would avoid it. Our favorite being Grand Cayman with very little hassle and great port experience. Would suggest that if you plan on taking this cruise expect not to be overwhelmed, but under whelmed. Read Less

It was a 15 days cruise to some places we'd never been. We traveled with another couple and we all decided this would be a nice cruise. We will never take the Island Princess again, it is quite old, has added too many rooms for the facilities (gym, all dining rooms, loungers, pool), everything is overwhelmed by the number of guests. I've never been on a ship that had an old cabbage (or worse) smell all the time. The food was excellent and the service was top notch. The staff worked hard to make this a good cruise. Our excursion in Costa Rica was not a good one. We went to a private park that the cruise description made sound spacious and pretty with a number of separate animal gardens and sites and a tram ride to lunch. In reality it was hot and dry and dusty and the "gardens" were open tents with a few things to see in them. I give the park credit for trying to help animals out and employ people on this very poverty stricken side of the island. The tram ride was about two minutes up to an open air restaurant that was equally hot. Most of us tried to stand under any misters we could find and hope there would be a breeze. Our guide and driver were excellent, the guide told us lots of history about the country, old and new. This was about double what it should have cost and should be rewritten in the brochure. We loved the little zoo and store near the pier in Colombia. Lots of animals, well cared for and right there for you to admire and take pictures of, without any vendors bugging you. Huatalco is a beautiful port all around, has great snorkeling and my husband saw a baby whale and mama close by plus lots of colorful fish. Read Less

I read the forum relating to what the Island Princess would be like after her re-fit with some amusement as everyone seemed to be worrying so much! Anyway, despite having not been on this ship before we have been with a couple of other lines so were able to have something to compare. We were on Baja deck, mid-ship, and was a great position. Slight vibration but nothing I couldn't sleep through. The shower is tiny and we did wonder how some coped but I'm sure there was a knack to it. Shampoo, body wash and lotion provided. The ship never felt crowded, even on sea days you could find a fairly quiet spot and always a chair. Smokers - no smoking on Promenade Deck - only inside at Churchills, however, a large area on Deck 14. This was great for smokers as the non-smokers, who are in the majority, left us well alone so there were always tables and chairs. The bar staff came around regularly to ask if you wanted drinks. Horizon Court - we did anytime dining but actually only used the Horizon Court. We tend to eat late so it was fairly quiet. The food was delicious, really tasty and always a good choice. The coffee is pretty revolting but I'm a bit of a coffee snob. If you have an early start for an excursion my advice would be to order room service for breakfast, sometimes that was a little "hectic". Sabatini's - we went once for our anniversary/my birthday - personally I wouldn't bother. Ports were all great - we did Princess tours in each. Some could be a bit better organised but overall all very good. All the staff we encountered were helpful and really nice. I swore I would never go on another cruise, but just maybe the Island Princess has swung it. So in summary, don't worry, you'll have a lovely cruise, and remember we're the lucky ones cruising around the Mediterranean in relative luxury - some are fleeing their countries and risking their lives to get across. The service on there was really good nothing too much trouble but be careful with reception as some of them do not speak good English or understand. The best person to speak with is Bernard who comes from Canada. We have never had such friendly helpful staff. The food is always cold so do not except too much, the deserts in the Horizon is really good for choice and the staff up there are the best always asking if you would like coffee or tea , Water nothing was too much for them to do for you. The free ice cream on the Lido deck is free and really good. The biggest problem was the shaking of the cabin at the AFT deck lido deck 14 on island princess shaking these are new cabins even though they were clean and nobody could look down on you and were not noisy the shaking is like being on one of those fitness shaking machines all the time. The shows were very short and some of the acts were terrible. The Films on Deck at night were good with free popcorn and cookies. The Burger bar is very good very hot food and fresh. Room Service which is free try the steak sandwich in the afternoon what a treat. The cabin Staff were so good always cleaning and perfect. Always sun lounger’s room in the pool space for all as there are 2 main pools and a splash pool on top deck forward. Be careful with the photographs can be very persistent. One of the best things is Any dinning you can go for dinner between 5:30 and 10 o'clock and sit a a different table every night. When shopping on board we found that staff very unhelpful and always looking at their watches rather than helping you. Read Less
