Grey Northern lights

Review for a Norwegian Fjords Cruise on Nordlys

Even though we saw them on 3 nights, be aware - Northern lights are NOT coloured to the naked eye. If your cabin is on the gangway side you get woken in the middle of the night with all the stops. Not enough to do on board except sit in the lounge area, some good talks and films. Board games available. The gangway area and walk path to coaches were not treated, so snow and ice v. ...

Disappointing and expensive

We booked this cruise to travel with friends who had never been to Norway. The first thing to be very aware of is that once you book, there are no cancellations allowed without losing your large deposit. No exceptions, even if it’s more than a year in advance. Also, before you book - be aware that the ship only stops once a day in a port long enough to actually get off the ship. And then it ...

Neither here nor there

Review for a Norwegian Fjords Cruise on Vesteralen

Hurtigruten could be an interestingly different offer to typical cruise ships as they also provide ferry services along the Norwegian coast and you get to see some areas typical cruise ships would not visit. The itinerary is driven by the deliveries made at 34 ports during day and night - unfortunately that does not always cater well for cruising passengers. Some stops are much too short to ...

Ferry trip disguised as a cruise

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Nordlys

As a ferry Hurtigruten does an excellent job making on scheduled stops to ports up and down the Norway coast. However, as a cruise ship it disappoints. I booked an 11-day CRUISE on Hurtigruten Nordlys in April. However, it is not a cruise ship, it is a FERRY that transports cargo, people (Norwegians) and their cars up and down the coast of Norway. Due to poor infrastructure road travel is not a ...

The Hurtigruten Northern Lights Promise

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Polarlys

The Hurtigruten Classic Round Voyage with the Northern Lights Promise, 24 March to 4 April 2019 on the ship Polarlys. Did we see the northern lights? That is a good question! Although we had some good daytime weather, the sky was cloudy for the first nine nights. Since Hurtigruten promise that we will see the lights, I predicted to my wife that on the tenth night (2 April), when the forecast ...

Worst cruise for passengers comfort ever

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Nordkapp

We have done a lot of cruises. We were aware that the Nordkapp is a working vessel and that it was going to be a lot less comfortable than a lot of other ships that is why we booked a attic superior cabin. When we arrived at the check in we had been downgraded to a polar outside. Because I am claustrophobic I jumped up and down to at least get a window. The cabin was the size of a railway ...

Awful cabin initially allocated

We chose to do a Hurtigruten trip as a once in a lifetime experience to see the Northern lights and to experience the beauty of the coastline from the comfort of the ship. B Unfortunately the first cabin we were allocated was the worst accommodation I have ever experienced, too small for two people ( to be frank only just acceptable for one) barely room to move past each other, storage space ...

Not value for money

Review for a Norwegian Fjords Cruise on Nordnorge

User Avatar

Chose this due to fantastic marketing by Hurtigruten but the reality does not live up to the marketing. The Norwegian coast is not how it's portrayed in promotional material and the towns are not quaint fishing village types but industrial towns. Not very attractive. The food was OK and varied choices buffet style for breakfast and lunch. Set dinner served most nights, portion size small. Buffet ...

Mission Accomplished; Serious Reservations about Hurtigruten

Review for a Norwegian Fjords Cruise on Polarlys

Just returned from a six-night trip from Bergen to Kirkenes. While we did sail on the MS Polarlys I think my comments are germane to all of Hurtigruten's ships. The main purpose of our trip was to see the Northern Lights and we did. We saw them all three nights we were in the Arctic Circle; two nights they were pretty weak but the third night they were really nice. So that was cool! Our cabin ...

Beware of expensive excursions.

Review for a Europe - All Cruise on Richard With

User Avatar

This was our first cruise and I was aware that some stops would be short, however if time is lost through bad weather or technical problems then stops are curtailed and sometimes you are not allowed to get off the boat at all. Apparently the schedule is the same in winter so the chances of stops being curtailed at that time must be much higher. Excursions are expensive. We booked ours in ...
