The cruise to Sydney via Vietnam (3 ports), Indonesia (1 port) plus Darwin and Brisbane commenced in Hong Kong.. Expectations were high as we had heard positive things about Princess line and we had been assured by our travel agent that we would have an excellent time with all our requirements being met. WRONG!!! We ate in the "Steakhouse" on the first night out of Hong Kong. By paying a surcharge to dine in a steakhouse one would assume you would be eating steak! But no! Steak cost an extra surcharge on top of the surcharge! However, the seafood and service was excellent. We had been assured that there would be no trouble in obtaining a table for two in the main dining room. WRONG! It took three days of arguments, disinformation and misinformation before we were able to obtain the required table. In the meantime we shared food in the buffet with hordes of (quite often) inconsiderate and rude (mainly Asian) travellers. Tables were at a premium at normal dining time. Food was adequate. The Regency Dining Room has an excellent menu with excellent staff. Service was amazingly efficient and we would recommend it for any meal - IF you can get the table you want. Shore excursions were overpriced and poorly organised. It took literally hours to get guests off at Ports where tenders were required. This impacted on the time left to actually do the tour, and we had one tour cut short as a result - but there was no monetary refund. Disembarkation at Australian ports was amazingly efficient. We didn't even attempt to get off the boat in Bali when we saw that only three lifeboats plus one charter boat were available to offload the 1500 plus passengers for their tours. Simple maths would have told the organisers that offloading and re-loading would take up to five hours on an 8 hour stopover! Internet access is available - at $25 for 24 hours (using your own computer). The internet speed is incredibly slow; it drops out quite often; and if you cross a time zone, your 24 hours is reduced accordingly. We were woken at night, on three occasions, by the overpowering smell of sewage. On checking, I found the smell spread throughout the entire deck area. This also happened on several occasions during the day (various decks) and the early evening - including in the bar area on deck seven on one occasion. Entertainment was great at first, but after a couple of weeks we became tired of hearing the same music played by the same musicians every day.Other daytime entertainment was provided by a tired (looking forward to a new contract with the cruise line in Alaska) Cruise Director. Evening entertainment was, at times, quite puerile. Enough said. A cooking 'exhibition' in the Princess Theatre was spoiled by the infantile acts of the Maitre d'Hotel. A wine tasting 'experience' was just that - an "Experience" - one we hope we can forget. Chateau Cardboard would be far better than some of the wines proudly displayed by bored staff - but for which you had to pay for the priviledge of tasting. The cabin (apart from the sewage smell) was o.k. The Steward was perfect. There was ample room although the late night parties in some cabins were a bit hard to tolerate. The class/caste system proudly promoted by Princess is almost intolerable. Sure, reward regular Cruisers if you want, but don't continually point out that the "plebs" will need to cruise 'witrh us' x number of times before they, too, will be elegible to attend free cocktail; evenings, rub shoulders with the shipboard gliterati etc. I have absolutely no desire to be 'entertained' with tales of other peoples' prior cruises or the amazing talents of their incredibly (no doubt) intellectually gifted grandchildren - thus attendance at such events (and dining at a table for 10) is not on my list of priorities. The cost of alcohol is totally exorbitant. $13 for a glass of wine that can be purchased on shore for $15 per BOTTLE. I doubt that we'll be lining up to cruise with Princess Lines ever again. We chose this cruise for the itinerary. Very disappointed all round with this cruise. I suppose it’s the sign of the times where a lot of cost cutting is happening. -Staffing levels were inadequate. Staff were trying their best to provide a good service but there just were not enough staff. Cabins - very good. Steward very good. Food - ok but lacked variety. Service very poor and the lighting was very poor every night. Entrainment - poor. A lot of the entertainment was passenger participation eg games like the yes/ no game etc. After 9,30pm the ship was very quiet. Not many people in the bars - was this because the drinks were very expensive I wonder. Disembarkation at ports was poorly organised - queues and more queues. Ports of call were good but had several tenders: Bali and na Trang which meant you only had a short time ashore - this we knew at time of booking. Overall disappointing as we were told by friends that Princess cruises were very good. Whilst on the cruise we met a lot of cruisers who said they travelled with Princess all the time and that standards had gone down a lot. Would not recommend. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the destinations ie Vietnam and Australia. I had read some poor reviews before taking this cruise on Sun Princess but I gather it’s mostly people who like a whinge who write reviews. I believe in trying it and see for yourself. Yes the ship is getting old but we loved every bit of this ship. From the atrium to the 24 hour cafe to the Marquis dining room and especially the hot dog burger bar on deck 14. The food was excellent and covered everyone’s tastes. Some people complained the evening entertainment was too short but I found 45minutes long enough especially if you were on the late sitting for your evening meal. If you want a table for two for dining you should book the fixed dining restaurant and book the table before cruising. If you are in the other restaurant you just wait for a few minutes for a table to become free. I found no one upmanship regarding ‘elite’ guests. On the contrary the two couples on our table hid the fact. We took 3 cruise organised tours and they were excellent. The Ho Chi Min city tour was rather expensive but we had no choice as there were no other means of getting there. The ship docks at a container port miles from anywhere. The stewards were excellent and went out of their way to please you. We had an amazing time. We made many friends who added to our enjoyment of the cruise. I didn’t think the drinks were expensive. Much the same price as I would pay at home. Remember when $13 dollars for a glass of wine is quoted this in Australian dollars. And yes I can buy a bottle of wine from Aldi for the same price as a glass on the ship but you’re drinking it on a beautiful ship like the Sun Princess. Loved it! Read Less

Went on this cruise for our 10th wedding anniversary expecting a luxury cruise liner and something a bit more special than other cruises we've been on. Very disappointed in the whole cruise from the old ship, brown decor, small balcony cabin and the inconvenience of just about everything in the cabin faulty or not working at all. Shore visits were disorganised which made time on shore shorter. Getting on tenders took an hour. Paid for shuttle (via ship) to go to markets in Vietnam only to find it was only a supermarket with no shopping for trinkets or gifts. Maintenance being done most days on ship limiting guests use of areas. Food was as expected on a cruise - good enough. Limited shaded areas outside - not enough for the amount of guests to escape the hot sun by the small pools. Not a cruise for children/teenagers as the average age would have been 70 years which made most entertainment a bit boring for the younger guest. However ocean was smooth as a lake and every day was sunny. Read Less

We joined Sun Princess in Hong Kong to visit Japanese ports and the South Pacific. Due to the Tsumani we realised that the Japan sector would be compromised and expected Sun Princess to inform us of alternate arrangements. They did this but only after we had boarded and then had few other options but to continue on the cruise. We found the general atmosphere on the ship to be one of discontent and disinterest. The ship itself is getting old and tired and badly in need of maintenance. We experienced lack of hot water on several days and no water at all on one. T.V. channels were also out of service on several days. A main generator failure rounded things off nicely. The entertainment was tired and was laughingly referred to as retirement village fare by many passengers. Upon disembarking we filled in our cruise reports and received a standardised letter from Princess saying that they too shared our disappointment at the cruise and hoped that we would enjoy further cruises with them.I dont think so.
