This was our fifth cruise on Oceania and our second on the Nautica. It is beginning to look a little worn, but that should be addressed with the scheduled makeover. The service and food remain impeccable. In every restaurant and bar you are greeted cordially and made to feel special. We never had a bad meal. Our cabin attendant and her assistant took great care of us. The cabins provide plenty of storage space and are well laid out. If the bed frame were just an inch higher it would make storage of suitcases much easier. The bathroom in anything but the suites, to put it mildly, is compact but functional. The shower is especially tiny and is our only major complaint. The guest lecturer was excellent giving insight into the history and attractions of the area and the ports we were visiting. We were disappointed that Nagasaki was substituted for Incheon on our itinerary but understand that this was something beyond the control of Oceania. Read Less

The crew were for the most part pleasant and accommodating. Food was above average and the pastry chef was particularly good. Themed dinners were okay but too much Thai. Food not always available but 24 room service was pretty good. The tours were conducted by good English speaking instructors (Dalian to Lushun prison and Beijing to Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square). Internet was spotty. Room 6004 was a good size, beds comfortable with lovely sheets but the whole ship needs renovation. Do not reserve this cabin if you have any issue with motion sickness. It is in the forward part of the ship and it was awful in rough seas. It was also very noisy when the entertainment in the lounge was going on. Overall a good trip. The port agent in Kobe did a good job helping us to get back to the ship on time on one precarious occasion. The age range though really is 65-80. Read Less

Maybe it's a matter of expectations and what you consider expensive. With an average verandah room and the cost of $16,000 for a 15 day cruise, we had high expectations. This was by far the most expensive cruise we have ever taken. It was a stretch for our finances. The room was smaller than those we have had in the past on other cruise lines and the bathroom space rivaled that on an airplane. For the cost, we could have had a suite on HAL, Celebrity, or Princess. But we chose Oceania because of the itinerary and loved that most stops in Vietnam were overnight. Plus, being on a small ship it could dock up the rivers and be centrally located in Saigon and Bangkok, where the larger ships would be 2 hours away on the coast. The dining room had a few missteps as far as proper cooking of steaks and eggs. They were very slow, no matter which meal, to get the courses out. I found a two hour dinner just too long. The specialty restaurants were no better than the main dining room. I would not recommend the O Life. We could not get a custom air route that we wanted, so Oceania made the flight arrangements, which were beyond awful. We took only 1 "free" excursion, which my husband then told me "never again". The group tour was 5 or 6 buses going to Hue together and the bathroom situation was so bad, I couldn't drink water until we got back aboard the ship. I booked last minute private tours for the other ports. We did not care for the entertainment and the fact that there was no theater but a lounge instead. I kept thinking, "Is this worth three times the amount of Celebrity?" and the answer is, no. Overall, it was a disappointment. Read Less

Ship hat fabulous locations for ports, in HK one could walk to Kowloon. In Saigon one could walk to the center of town. In Bangkok it was 15 min by cab. Just make sure to leave the harbor and get a normal taxi. The once in the Harbor are a ripoff. Only the Hanoi stopp was awfully far from the city so we did the Halong Bay instead. Very impressive landscape. As it is a small ship, embarkation/disembarkartion was smoth. Even wenn tendering. Always room in the restaurants, seldom a line at the ones with buffet. Sevice as extremely nice, from the Stateroom attendants to the waiters. Food is good but a bit old-fashioned. Missed Red Ginger from the other ships where one can get some spicy Asian food. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary plus our experience on a previous cruise on Riviera. A big plus was that Nautica, being a small ship, was able to dock close to several of the city centres rather than at the more distant ports. Sailing out of Hong Kong harbour from Ocean Terminal after dark was a an amazing sight and a cruise highlight. Several overnights in port made it possible to take two shore trips per port. As anticipated, the food was great in all dining venues, especially at the Polo Grill. We appreciated room service breakfast on days when we had an early start for shore excursions. We like open dining times, being able to dine whatever time we feel like, and enjoyed sharing tables sometimes. The wine prices were very high, but we made good use of happy hour pre dinner drinks. The enrichment lectures we went to (4) we very good. Attended only 2 evening shows, but both were very good given the small number of the entertainment crew. Embarkation didn’t go as expected. We arrived 15 mins after embarkation began but found everything at a standstill, with nowhere to sit while we waited for action, around 30 mins. Were told later that we were kept inside for warmth, as it was unusually cold outside. Once the line started moving all went well. Disembarkation was seamless. Service in all areas of the ship was excellent, and courtesy was shown by everyone from the Captain down. We didn’t do any ship’s excursions, partly because they were so expensive, and partly because we prefer small group excursions. We organised our own trips or joined some organised by others via Cruise Critic. A little disappointed with the lack of a Concierge lounge on this smaller ship. Otherwise this was a great cruise, and if we cruise again we are likely to choose Oceana. Read Less

Traveling with our dear friends, one of whom is a Veteran that served in Vietnam 50 years ago and wanted to finally go back to see it again, we originally selected this cruise because the itinerary matched with what we were interested in seeing. Now, having completed the journey and enjoying every minute of it, I'm compelled to let others know how pleased we were for choosing Oceania's Nautica as our home for 15 days. Not only was the ship clean and beautiful, the Crew and Staff were so warm and welcoming every single day. The food was excellent, the entertainment top notch, the almost-daily disembarkation and embarkation process for excursions went smoothly and quickly, and all arrangements made on our behalf were very nicely taken care of. Another word about the entertainment....the 6 performers (singers and dancers) were so polished and so talented....and friendly!! We'd see them all over the ship at different times of day, and they felt like friends!! The Cruise Director too...he made every day so enjoyable!! We are looking forward to booking another cruise in the near future with Oceania. Our experience was so positive and memorable....Loved it!!! Read Less

The ship is lovely, all paneled walls and elegant furnishings. People have referred to it as old world. I also like very much that it is smaller than the ones we have been on in the past. It is not so exhausting to go from one end to the other all day. I also feel that it is easier to meet people when there are fewer of them. You are more likely to see people you have seen before. The theater is less massive. There are fewer nighttime activities, which is fine, and only 2 stores, which is great. It feels much less commercial than the big ships. Everything feels more low key. The entertainers were very good, except for the comedian. The food was very good, though not as exceptional as the advertising would lead you to believe. I would skip the ship's excursions and book your own separately. You will get smaller groups at less cost with more customization possible. I was annoyed that all the tours included shopping stops. Though I understand that people want souvenirs, I felt this took p too much of the excursion time. Be aware that if you did not prepay the tips they will be charged against the $800 shipboard credit that people commonly opt for. I didn't realize this and used my credit up on other things that I could have skipped. Bottom line. Great itineray. Lovely ship and service. Feel confident to book this cruise. Read Less

First time with Oceania and will be the last . Ship is looking shabby and cabin very small .Service in Restaurant very slow ( 2 hours + for meal ) and not enough staff . Food average and often lacked seasoning . Terrace Cafe poorly run and could not cope with large numbers returning from trips- not clearing tables / ran out of food etc . Entertainment ( apart form the Evening shows and lectures ) very poor - colouring books / tossing bean bags. Advised by cruise director limited entertainment as large group of 150 people had booked trip with own speaker and using main lounge so choice of entertainment could not be provided and lectures sometimes at 8.30 at night when most people at dinner . Many additional charges including $11 for Yoga and some other classes . Trips overpriced and not very good and "scenic " drive on one trip was past a nuclear power station , and empty factory . Trips cancelled due to customs in Dalian in China and little contingency and when complained to concierge advised this often happens but no transparency when booking . In addition arrived in Shanghai at 9.30pm instead of 4pm as advertised when booked and excuse given was the "tides". So in the end we had 6 sea days instead of 4 ! Customer service has been appalling having followed up both on the trip and after and generally very condescending attitude . Understanding recently acquired by NCL and looking at other reviews ( many similar to ours ) standards appear to have dropped since last Summer ( when we booked ) . In summary very overrated and not up to standard of other cruises have been on . Will not book with Oceania again and certainly not recommend . Read Less

We have previously traveled on Oceania. Nautica is an ancient ship that should be retired. Bathrooms are horrific. Food and service were poor. Room service served rotten bananas, brown lettuce. Dress code not enforced in main dinning room. Folks wore flip flops, torn/dirty sweatshirts. Dining room drapes were wrinkled and dusty.Mold on shower curtain in bathroom. Staff appeared to be poorly trained as compared to previous cruises with Oceania, bu tried very hard to be helpful. When a crew member was asked about staffing he commented that Oceania had "moved crew members around to newer and bigger ships." Spoke with high level management person, while on ship, and he agreed with me, regarding problems, and we did receive a credit of thousands of dollars toward next cruise. That demonstrates, to me, that management is acutely aware of the problems. Why else would the company compensate me for my observations? Oceania management either does not want to or cannot improve the situation. Our belief is that since being bought by NCL that the organization is "milking the cash cow." This was our 5th cruise with Oceania- it was our last. The service in the Grand Dining was below average. It appears that Oceania has understaffed the wait staff particularly for the evening meal. In the Grand Dining, one of our party ordered a Jacq Pippin "signature" dish- roast chicken. It was served, after along wait, cold, hard and dry. The entertainment, with a few exceptions, was amateurish and lame. The most significant failure of Oceania on this cruise was its elimination of the tours in Dalian and Shanghai. Just very poor planing. We were given one hour to walk around Dalian and no time in Shanghai. The ship got into Shanghai at 9 PM and we had to be off the ship by 9AM the next morning. So much for seeing one of great cities of the Far East. Another example of Oceania's poor planing occurred in Beijing. My wife and I chose the Tiananmen Square tour at a cost of about $150 each. It so happened that on the day of the tour, March 4th, Tiananmen Square was closed to visitors because of the Chinese government's annual legislative session. Oceania made no offer to refund all or any part of the S300 we had paid for this tour. To top off my negative experiences on this cruise we were charged $480 for gratuities, a charge which was not included in the Ticket Contract. Read Less

Great ship. Good food,. Fantastic crew and organisation. However, you WILL pay $2000 above sticker price for a 2 week cruise. Gratuities, excursions, drinks. Most reviled by all was the "free drinks package." It is not. Firstly, this package only applies to beer and wine; then only wine by the glass, not the bottle; then only in certain bars and only at certain times. In short, not fit for purpose. I'm sure the small print explains all this, but it is typical of the deceptive pricing policies. e.g. all drinks attract an automatic 18% gratuity. It adds up. Typically we want to enjoy a trip and not feel deceived by small print. Otherwise the staff could not have been more helpful and excursions better organised. Saw sights we would never have considered without the excursions. Would cheerfully use them again having learnt the lessons on pricing but others might not be so forgiving. Read Less

We have completed 5 cruises, 3 on Nautica back to back and 2 on Marina back to back in the last 18 months. Chose to return to Nautica for our 6th cruise of 18 nights as we found Marina impersonal and lacking the atmosphere of Nautica. We had immediate problems with Internet access and speed. We both run businesses so Internet access is very important consideration. We had free wifi access package for one device at a time which I think many many other passengers also had. We would have paid double the charged price if wifi to have slow but reliable connection. That apparently doesn't matter. No how much you are prepared to pay apparently you get nothing more. We accept the explanation that satellite internet is far slower than on shore but in he past Nautica and Marina offered speeds which were just tolerable. This last cruise on Nautica Internet access was unacceptable in this day and age. The explanation from the IT manager is simply 600 guests and crew using Internet make it slow. It is even slower and at times non existent when docked. I even tried setting my alarm and trying log in at 3.00am as most of the oldies would be in bed. It didn't help speed just as slow at this time also. We also had an issue with our Indian visa due to receiving an email with important information meaning I applied for one that was not valid for sea port arrival. Not the ships fault but their attitude when we asked for help was to say they would see what they could do perhaps a group visa. It turned out after having to ask twice again that they knew hey couldn't help but hadn't told us. There answer was for us to get off at either Phuket or Yangon the next stops after Singapore. The two issues both of which seemed were unsolvable, Internet access and visa, made us decide to disembark at Singapore after 6 nights. We could not afford for our businesses the hopelessness of the Internet. It was costing us more than we lost leaving early. When we appeared at Reception to say we were leaving they were nonplussed and after some ten minutes of radio class to the Chief Purser Second Purser and god knows who else we finalised our account and left. It seemed to be of little interest to management staff. One highlight not to be missed on Nautica the is the ability to watch the much revered Jacqueline Pepin,who Oceania puts much faith in for their food offering, age through threats from young man to middle aged to senior. The never ending loop is hilarious but not as hilarious as the extortionate liquor prices on board. Still they do let you bring your own alcohol on board which helps. So that's it for us and Oceania and their much touted food offering. Until they are able to upgrade and offer better connectivity for younger passengers which is required in this modern world I don't see any hope of us returning for our Big O points anytime soon. The one thing that makes Nautica, and my hat off to them, are the cabin attendants, food servers, wait people. You know, all the staff that are paid less that Management or Officers. They are great. We chose this cruise for ports and because there was bridge. Embarkation was easy; disembarkation was chaos. We were given times to disembark in groups. Repeated announcements said Indian officials were not ready, but did not tell later groups to wait. Group after group added to the crowd. The ship was lovely, the cabin spacious, though we had a penthouse suite, which was actually a room with a sitting area, not a suite. The food was mostly above average, desserts were excellent, service was wonderful. Service in general was extraordinary, from wait staff to cleaning staff to butlers. Ports were interesting. Entertainment was poor in general. The cruise director, "Julie," I think, was friendly, but awful. Once she announced that she had nothing planned and ship's personnel saved her life by doing a show. Another time she announced the entertainment only cost a few hundred dollars. A local show was awful. A passenger talent show was low end--and not good. The comedian/magician was very good. The female singer was very good with a dated repertoire. The orchestra's repertoire was also dated. Before shows the orchestra played for dancing. Two couples, both with probably an average of 1000 dance lessons, were the only people dancing. Everyone else was intimidated. I know because I tried to get people to get up and dance. Where was Julie? Why didn't she ask people to dance, turn them over to spouses and get more people on the floor? She made TV announcements and appeared to have no clue what she was talking about. The list of daily activities is deceiving since virtually no one showed up for anything--beside bridge. Even bridge was disappointing because a normal session is 3 1/2 hours. These sessions were two hours, though there was more than enough time to extend them, and only on afternoons at sea, never on port days and never in the evenings. Clearly, Julie knows nothing about bridge. That said, the bridge director was very good. Mah jongg at 11 a.m.? Not a single soul showed up, which I know because I was in the game room playing with friends at 10:30. Julie never even stopped in. There were sets, but no cards, indicating that Julie hadn't taken the time to find out about the game. Bingo? We were lucky to get the minimum of 12 players. Ping pong, etc.? Virtually no one showed up. There were many days at sea and without bridge we would have been bored. I did not go to hear the speaker, who spoke on topics unrelated to the cruise, but was reportedly good. We had no health issues, but those that did were ripped off by the doctor--$185 to wash off a skinned knee and apply a band aid plus another $185 for the same the next day. A woman had a stomach ache, was given 5 kinds of pills and charged $2000. A woman felt ill during the G.I. epidemic after we left the ship--and was charged. We were advised in advance that Oceania's tours were 2 to 3 times the cost of privately arranged tours, and mostly arranged our own, all of which we enjoyed. The three we took with Oceania were terrible. The Cochin guide couldn't really be a licensed guide. She had nothing to say and half the trip was riding to and from a boat to cruise and watch people bathe, wash pots and do laundry. The Phuket Thailand trip was a disgrace. We took this because we were supposed to ride elephants. We weren't told until on board that we could not ride and it was too late to make other plans. Instead we got ox cart rides. Yes, climb up, ride a block, see nothing, do nothing, turn around, ride a block, get off. This day was a waste. The Singapore tour could have been so much and yet was so little. And yet, we were able to find excellent guides on our own with no knowledge of the areas whatsoever. One thing that struck me was that, in contrast to a Regent cruise we took, there was constant conversation about money. People felt nickeled and dimed because alcohol was not included (drinks were costly), and tours were not included (and were costly). I don't know if we would return. We might if there were more bridge to keep us occupied and a very appealing itinerary. Read Less

We were very disappointed in the Concierge veranda room on the Nautica. After a prior cruise on the Marina, we expected a quality experience. It was a very small room, little closet space, a very small bathroom ( difficult to use) and the concierge feature was useless (just early boarding). Food service was very good and staff were pleasant (with the exception of Excursion desk staff). It was a tired ship and most of our shipmates also were disappointed with the experience. This was not a premium ship by any measure. I became ill on the 16th day of the cruise and had to leave the ship by tug for a hospital in Kochi, India. the medical staff on the Nautica just dumped us with no support and has never gotten back to us on our welfare. The Marina was a premium ship, the Nautica was a third tier ship and we would not use Oceania in the future given our experience. Staff seemed apologetic for the condition of rooms. The concierge status was a fraud - no benefits. Unlike the Marina, with a laundry on each level, there was one laundry for the entire ship. The charges by the ship doctor were outrageous. Just for medicine for a sinus infection - over $350. I did have a cardiac event that required hospitalization for several days. Oceania just dumped us in Kochi. fortunately we were able to handle things ourselves. The Nautica was recently rehabbed, but the rooms were out od date and old. Read Less

Chose for itinerary, time of year and previous Oceania Experience. Oceania however changed itinerary dropping disembarkation port of Istanbul and day in Ephesus. Added Rhodes, Santorini and disembark in Athens, areas we have previously explored for weeks. Oceania made no attempt to offer compensation for our already privately booked Istanbul expenses such as business class air tickets, 5 nights of hotel reservations, Turkish visa's and tour guides. Just offered cruise tickets to cover cancelation expenses for cruise to be used by 12/30/16. Wouldn't even pay for our flights from Athens to Istanbul, which was really our only viable option. Our Expedia Cruise Center travel agent bought flight tickets out of her own pocket. Found ship poorly managed, crude embarkation in Hong Kong, shoddy deck furniture, small bland veranda room with out any art; the bed, linens and black out curtain were however good. GI out break which was handled extremely incompetently and with out any compassion for healthy guests or ill ones. Grand Dinning room atmosphere, staff and food was great as was Polo Grill. Entertainment poor, though the crew act really tried hard to preform. Shore excursions way too expensive, you could get a quality private car tour for half of an Oceania bus excursion. Enrichment Lecturer Dr Teo Ruiz was great; extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and entertaining. We will not be considering Oceania for any of our future cruise plans. Read Less

Oceania is our favourite cruise line, having completed 11 cruises. We have sailed on all their ships except the newest Sarina. Compared to some other cruise lines we have sailed with, Oceania is absolutely the best, and the crew on all ships are the friendliest. This cruise was a highlight of South East Asia countries, ending in Athens Greece. We listen to some people complain about price, however we have compared prices to some other companies and they all are about equal when free air and some other perks are compared. Most however do not compare to the food onboard Oceania ship's. We used most of the ship excursions on this cruise, because of the area we were visiting. They were of a very high quality, with excellent guides and clean transportation. We have found the cabin cleaning staff excellent. The cabins are cleaned twice daily, and towels changed. The entertainment is very minimal, however a 45 minute show each evening is sufficient for us, especially after a busy day ashore on excursions. Read Less

We loved the itinerary. The service was impeccable. Dr. Ruiz was brilliant and spellbinding. The food was delicious, especially Polo. I enjoyed the shows, coloring and the movies when not on excursions. We had a perfect outside cabin, a tad bigger than most as the balcony footage was actually in our cabin. Our only disappointment was the ridiculous size of the bathroom. They also took our robes the night before departure and did not replace the used towels. I guess they were through with us. I have special dietary needs and they were handled extremely well in the dining venues. The Seder meal that nautica put out was lovely. It was awesome going from Egypt to Israel at the auspicious moment of Passover. The other cruisers were generally very friendly. I do think that the cruise was a bit pricey, especially the excursion but it was an awesome experience Julie Read Less

We selected a concierge veranda room, but there was virtually ne concierge service - no concierge lounge, just early boarding. Also, the room was very small and the closet space was minimal. the bathroom was very small and poorly designed. They said the ship had just been refurbished, but certainly not the rooms!. Service and dinning were fine, but excursions were overpriced and the excursion desk was not well run. I had to use the ship doctor and prices were outrageous - $350 for sinus medicine. Interesting Itinerary Hong Kong/Bangkok. Cabin on Deck 7 with Balcony. Small cabin compared to other Cruise lines we have been on. As you enter, Wardrobes on left , Bathroom on right. When W 'robe doors are open, light is obscured , therefore no light. Coming out of bathroom if your partner is at w 'robe you may knock him flying. We had to announce we were leaving B 'room to save having to dash to medical centre. Once you got past these two obstructions the Room was small but manageable. Food OK, sometimes tasteless. Entertainment with the resident singers was woeful, perhaps the fact that only one or two of the four could sing. Embarrassing . However the acts who joined throughout the cruise were excellent. Cruise Director who had no personality that I can't even remember his name. Had been with the company in this position and in Head Office for over 20 yrs SPEECHLESS . I mean words fail me. When he took Trivia he was the School Teacher and we the pupils . When he gave out the paper / pens and collected same at end of game . He counted them out and counted them in, if he was short he went on and on. Honestly you would have thought they were made of gold instead of cheap plastic. Come Singapore he was off on vacation and on came Noel Dean as replacement who was talented and great personality. Shore excursions much too expensive and not really very good. We went on at least one per port and were most disappointed in all bar one. Guides were again the worst we had encountered on our travels. However the cruise line are in the driving seat as we took this cruise because we wanted to visit the countries so they charge what they like. We also noted at no time did a member of Oceania staff accompany us on our excursions in case of emergency. We [and other people on tour ] had an incident which we had to sort out with guide ourselves. This should not have happened. Senior Staff well spot them. Announcements made and then later retracted. Really felt the passengers were a inconvenience. Overall Management and Staff require retraining. Ship requires modernisation, even though it was in a few yrs ago ,its still old fashioned, even allowing for the country house feel. Oceania , well what does it do right ? From boarding to departure each day was anticipated. When you are older and used to the delightful areas of the "R" Ships, it becomes a full twenty nights of relaxing sea adventure. The Nautica crew was there to provide me with both concern and continual attempts to insure I had a pleasant voyage. I downgraded from my usual Veranda to an Ocean View Stateroom which proved to be adequate in every regard. It was the perfect size for one and the stewarts kept it clean and comfortable. The food (cuisine) at every meal was too tempting to describe. To select one entree was a challenge as each one looked more delicious than the next. I ate too much. Service was "overboard" (no pun intended) and the array of deserts was each day better or as good as the day before. To decide to be pampered in the Main Dining Room or select choices from the Ninth Deck Buffet was a daily decision. I sat back in my chair afterward with contentment and the perfect Latte. I made the trip alone but was always joined by passengers eager to make friends. Daily activities and the soft gentle comfort of the pool lounges provided constant enjoyment. Never was there a boring day. The Library had a good selection of fascinating reading material. The wrap around windows in the top floor Horizon Lounge provided a better view than the Officers Bridge and afternoon Tea Time had the three lovely violinists joined by the selection of tempting afternoon tidbits. Yes, the Nautica Cruise Ship was a well based decision as I had sailed previously on the Insignia. Both "R" Ships were a delightful rendition of a heavenly vacation. I look forward to my next enjoyable cruise with either Oceania or Azamara. Both cruise lines compete to provide their older group of passengers with a journey over the sea to be long remembered. First the good - cabin was nicely appointed and extremely comfortable. We booked last minute and had to take a deluxe ocean view cabin on deck 4. We were pleasantly surprised! It was quiet, conveniently located just below the coffee bar which made it so easy to get my early morning cappuccino, dining room, nightly entertainment (walk one floor down when it was over and in our cabin in about 3 minutes while others waited for an elevator), and disembarking at ports. We won't bother to spend the extra money for veranda or above in the future as it just isn't necessary. Most people we met never even went out on their balconies -it was just too hot. Food was excellent!! We were on the ship for 20 days and never got tired of the food. While the specialty restaurants are impressive, the Grand Dining Room is really good too. The sandwiches at the poolside Waves Grill are not to be missed. Entertainment was surprisingly good -we liked that the nightly show didn't begin until 9:30 (giving us time to enjoy a leisurely dinner) and it was over at 10:15 -perfect timing for us!! Martinis and Horizons bars are great -easy to meet people (if you'd like) or just sit and enjoy a cocktail and some good music. The view from Horizons is spectacular and worth going to for Happy Hour (2 for 1) and watching the sunset. The not so good - shore excursions are WAY overpriced and fall short on what's promised -book your own private tours or just hire a taxi to take you around for 4 or 5 hrs. This can be done very easily and you can always find another couple willing to share the expense. We used Filipino Travel in Manila for a Tagatay Ridge and Intramuoros tour, Borneo Trekker for a city tour in Brunei, Ann Tours in Saigon, and BKK tours for Bangkok -all were very good. We didn't get to stop in Cambodia due to high winds and so didn't get to do the Don Bosco tour, but I've heard it's excellent as well. Other ports we either just took the shuttle (provided by the city, not Oceania) or hired a taxi with another couple, or did a hop on hop off bus (Singapore -their MRT serve is another good option). Note that there is heavy traffic in Manila, Saigon, and Bangkok, so you need to factor that in when planning your day. Destination Services desk was not very helpful with information on ports for independents (those not signed up for a ship's excursion). We got to some ports later than expected (12:00 instead of 9:00 in Saigon and Bangkok, which made it impossible to see all that we'd planned) with no explanation as to why. Shuttle schedules weren't available until last minute, and money exchange as listed in brochures was only available in Thailand. Some stops take USD but that information doesn't come to you until last minute also. Overall, we loved this cruise! Read Less

This review is for the Nautica cruise to South East Asia departing from Hong Kong on 24 January 2016. Overall we had an absolutely fabulous cruise with a varied and interesting itinerary, the highlights being Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), Brunei and Singapore. We also took a privately arranged add on from Bangkok to Siem Reap for Angkor Wat which was the icing on the cake. Travelling on a smaller ship is a definite advantage over the bigger ships as we were able to navigate the Mekong Delta right in to the heart of Saigon this journey being a highlight in itself. The same was true for getting close to Bangkok at the end of the itinerary. We did not take any of the ships tours having pre arranged a number via Cruise Critic roll call, a couple on our own and a couple when we arrived in Port. It was our first cruise on Nautica having previously cruised on Marina. We love the country club ambience of Oceania, classy but not stuffy, and if anything it was better on Nautica being a smaller ship. The ship is well designed with lots of outdoor space and always easy to get a sun lounger, the staff DO remove towels/belongings if people reserve and then disappear. As with Marina a fantastic choice of restaurants, our favourite being the Grand Dining room for dinner even though there was often a wait for tables if you want to eat as a couple rather than join an open table, the way round this is to turn up with new found friends who you want to spend dinner with and usually this meant we were whisked straight through. The food was superb, I selected the Canyon Ranch menu whenever it was available which I found was always tasty, plentiful and suitably filling. We opted to take the drinks package which allows wine and beer with lunch and dinner, a big plus being that champagne, port and after dinner liqueurs are also included, if you drink c3-4 glasses per day (including a glass of champagne pre dinner in th Grand Dining room bar) the package represents excellent value as it includes the (extortionate!) 18% service charge. Entertainment was low key but we enjoyed some of the "shows", the onboard entertainment team were very good with guest artists joining and leaving the cruise as we went along. It was a shame that a lot of the other guests disappeared after the show finished (10.15pm!) there is music until nearly midnight and happy hour in Horizens from 10.30 until 11.30 each evening. Daytime activities were well organised and well attended and we met some lovely interesting people ranging in age from late forties to early eighties. Read Less

M y wife and I have been cruising for twenty five years so I guess that qualifies us as experienced. We arranged with Oceania for a pre cruise stay in Hong Kong and a post cruise stay in Bangkok. We were cruising on the Nautica one of Oceania's older (but restored) ships. I could write pages of information about this cruise but I am not really inclined to do that. In total, the ship was fantastic. The cabin was spacious, the service great and the crew exceptional. The perfection of the crew was only surpassed by the quality and selection of the food. It ranged from good to fabulous. Port excursions were variable depending where you were . They were quite expensive and not all that great for the money however, the choices were varied in each port and the selections good. The ship maintened a friendly and extremely welcoming atmosphere. Oceania took care of you from the moment you showed until the last second of disembarkation They left no stone unturned to try to insure your comfort, safety and good time. Have already booked a future cruise with Oceania and that says it all. Read Less

The tour in Taiwan lasted about half the allotted time and much of that was spent with our tour guide looking for most of the group. He seemed like a nice man, but he just took off without even a head count so he was unsure if our group was together on the bus at departure or not. Some of the older members were unable to keep up. I believe he cut the tour short out of frustration. The ship's excursion group seemed disinterested in any complaints. The cruise advertised Hong Kong to Beijing. The only thing we saw at Beijing was the airport. I asked the folks in their H.Q. about a tour in Beijing and was told the only way this could be done was by extending the cruise with a land package. We found out later that those cruise members who had a later flight that same day were offered the option of such a tour. very disappointing. Oceania seems to have deteriorated. Read Less

We just completed our second cruise with Oceania, having previously sailed on Riviera in the Meditteranean. This time, we chose Asia. We had done some of China before, but wanted to see how it was changed. We also had not been to Japan, and the Pearls of the Orient itinerary aboard Nautica offered a couple destinations that were of interest, but which we thought might be too out of the way to get to otherwise. Embarkation: This was fairly smooth. Our family arrived on 2 different flights. One group of us arrived on a flight that arrived in the morning. As a bonus, since the cabins were not ready yet, a bonus tour of Hong Kong was provided, which was most welcome with almost everyone. Better to see some of the city than to sit around waiting for the stateroom to be ready. This was included in the airport transfer fee. A few guests had a similar tour of the city booked for the next day, and had to get that canceled, but this was definitely a bonus. Once on board the ship, things went very smoothly. Service: To me, this is Oceania's greatest strength. Everyone aims to please, is tremendously polite, seemingly happy, and hard working. There is seemingly nothing you ask for that cannot be arranged. This extends from stateroom stewards, dining staff, sommeliers, concierge, destination services, to maintenance folks and the officers on board. The staff is phenomenal, friendly, and really makes cruising with Oceania a great experience. Dining: The food on board is fantastic. On board is the Grand Dining room, which offers open seating, meaning you can go when you like. The menu varies daily, and on a 16 day cruise, only a couple, very popular menu items repeated. The food is fantastic and consistent. There are two specialty restaurants on board, Toscana and Polo Grill. Reservations are necessary, but we got 2 meals at each. I honestly prefer the Grand Dining Room to the specialty restaurants as there is more variety, but they are fun for just mixing things up a bit. There is also a buffet restaurant, which we used only for breakfast on days that began early. There was a bit more self-service than we had experienced on Riviera, and we were not big fans of that for sanitation reasons. It also tended to be crowded at breakfast time, and tables were hard to get. There is a burger place by the pool, which was great for days we got back to the ship a bit late. Generally speaking, the food service is, after the service, a major selling point for choosing Oceania. Beverages: Beverage service is a la carte. There are a couple options for per diem all you can drink packages if you are into that sort of thing. The wine list at the restaurants is solid, if not a bit overpriced. There is a team of friendly sommeliers that know the list well. You can bring wine and other beverages on board, provided you consume them in your stateroom, which we took full advantage of in some of the ports of call where the weather was nice and we could enjoy a glass of wine on the balcony looking out over Shanghai or Hong Kong. If you choose to bring a bottle to a restaurant or lounge, the corkage fee is $25. We are mostly wine drinkers, so I am not sure about the pricing of cocktails and other beverages. Stateroom: We had a standard veranda room. It was a big smaller than on Riviera, but cozy. The bathroom is shower only, and small, but you're on a ship. Furnishings were great, and towels, soft drinks, and water were replenished constantly. During warmer weather, we made good use of the veranda. The room serviced twice daily, in the morning and at turndown. A couple times we got back during servicing, and found our stewardess, fluffing curtains, sanitizing all surfaces. Just phenomenal service. Public Areas: We spent a lot of time in Horizon's Lounge, which offers a great panoramic view in front of the ship. Tea is served there, and is a lot of fun if you can handle more food. Later in the evening, it becomes more of a lounge atmosphere. The only downside is that it is the only place smoking is allowed indoors on the ship (albeit in one corner). They have a ventilation system that helps keep the smell out, but it's not always effective, and sometimes the smell permeated throughout Horizons and into the stairwells. I'd prefer they keep smoking to outdoors only. The Nautica Lounge is used for lectures, shows, and receptions. There is a casino on board as well as a couple bar areas, which we did not utilize. There are two shops as well offering luxury items, which we also did not use. Entertainment: The string quartet and the band on board were quite good. We did not get to any of the shows. They had a couple cooking demonstrations with the head chef which were fun, and wine tastings which were expensive but fun on days at sea. Also they had lectures on board which were fantastic about history and issues relating to upcoming ports of call. Fellow Cruisers: This is an older crowd. I would not recommend taking kids on an Oceania cruise, as entertainment options are limited. The people who travel on Oceania are mostly experienced and well traveled people. I am in my 30s, and enjoyed it just fine. There were a few of people who were quite elderly and debilitated, which is of no concern except that it can slow you down on excursions. Destinations: Oceania bills itself as creating destination-oriented cruises. While they offer plenty of Caribbean cruises, they also offer lots of cruises to off the beaten path destinations or destinations that one would not typically associate with cruising. Our cruise stopped at Hong Kong, Keelung Taiwan (30 minutes from Taipei), Naha in Okinawa, Kobe (an hour from Osaka and Kyoto), Hiroshima, Shanghai, Incheon (45 minutes from Seoul), Dalian, China, and Tianjin (2 hours from Beijing which is inland). There were overnight stays in Hong Kong, Kobe, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Dalian was not exactly a tourist destination, but it was fascinating to see a mushrooming Chinese city that is not tourist oriented. All other destinations offered plenty of things to do. Excursions: My main criticism of this cruise was that the excursions were mediocre. Often, groups on excursions were quite large (30+). My family is relatively young and energetic, and sometimes it felt like significant time was wasted in shuffling the large group around. I wish more options were available for more fit people. Most of the excursions lay out what degree of stairs and walking will have to be navigated. I would love it if each destination offered an excursion or two which are sort of "If you have to ask how many stairs there are, choose something else". In other words, something a little more fast-paced and agile. Our excursion in Taipei was not the best. We went to the National Palace Museum, which houses some of the great treasures of ancient China. To say it is a crowded place is an understatement, but with a group of 30+ people, significant time was wasted just herding the group around. We did Shanghai on our own, which was quite doable. We were able to do much more than one would have been able to do with any of the excursions Oceania offered. Additionally, in Kobe, we booked an independent tour of Kyoto, which saw more of the city using public transportation than the excursions did, and avoiding long bus rides and the herding issue. To top it off, this was a far cheaper option. The only issue with independent arrangements is that you may not get priority in going through immigration procedures and disembarkment at various ports, and if you get delayed for any reason, the ship may not wait for you. Nevertheless, in the future, we will lean towards independent arrangements. Pricing: I believe the cruise itself was priced fairly, and may even be a bit of a bargain. It's not a Carnival sort of pricing, as you get a heck of a lot more service, but for the length of the trip, I thought it was priced well (booked with 2 for 1 and airfare included). Internet costs are simply outrageous, and from those who used it, I was told it was slow. The spa and gym services were also priced stiffly. Excursions are quite pricey as well, and in my opinion, overpriced. At the end of the trip, you'll get a bill for a service charge, but I actually appreciate this, as you don't have to spend a bunch of time deciding how much to tip. In short, the cruise is fairly priced, but they hit you hard for anything extra you do, which is often more than you are getting. I suppose this is the business model of the cruise industry. Flight Arrangements: I added this category here because this is a common criticism I heard from fellow cruisers. My flight arrangements were quite reasonable, but for some, the air itineraries were quite absurd. Some fellow family members from Chicago were sent to LA (2 days before the first day of the cruise, which is admittedly a bit complicated in light of the long flights and time zone issues) despite there being a couple of daily direct flights available to Hong Kong from Chicago. Several cruisers I spoke with take a credit and make their own flight arrangements independently to avoid situations like these. Were I to have had a similar itinerary to the rest of my family, I would have been in trouble and either had to cancel or have a big mess in arranging extra vacation time at work. Summary: There are a few hassles, but overall, this was a second fantastic experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this cruise, and have learned a bit in terms of how to optimize the experience further for the next one. From Oceania, you will get reasonably priced luxury, excellent food, and intriguing destinations that offer you an opportunity to "travel" and not just cruise. Even days at sea were highly enjoyable. The staff makes this work more than anything else. I would highly recommend Oceania. Read Less
