I was somewhat apprehensive about our cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong on this ship as there have been a number of negative reviews about the ship. We signed up for this cruise 2 years ago. We have almost every detail planned. Plane mechanical problems caused us to miss one day and one tour in Hong Kong. Regretfully, all prepaid, non-refundable. It was sign of more trouble to come.

Having visited Beijing three times - all work related, we were very keen to visit Taipei as it seems the jewels from the Forbidden City ended up in Taipei after the civil war. Not the easiest of places to schedule travel and we saw this cruise offered a stop here. Plus we also wanted to visit Shanghai, Vietnam, and South Korea.

After reading all the negative reviews for the Millennium we were concerned that we possibly made the wrong choice for this cruise. Embarkation was poorly organised as there was little room at HongKong terminal.

This was our 3rd cruise with HAL. The first 2 were on Amsterdam,which immediatly set a high standard, which Volendam couldn't quite attain. More on that later.

We boarded the Volendam in Hong Kong. Embarkation was a breeze and we were happy to hear that our cabins were ready even before noon.
