Previously cruised the Med on New Amsterdam and had a great cruise. Sadly this did not meet our expectations. We spent 2 days in Hong Kong before sailing as my husband wanted to sail around Hong Kong harbour on a Star ferry. Embarkation was very smooth and quick though we weren't asked to fill in a health questionnaire which was unusual. The hygiene on board left a lot to be desired. We have been on many cruises with different cruise lines. This is the only one where passengers were able to enter the dining areas and return on board without sanitising their hands. I mentioned this to the nurse who said they would increase sanitation if there was an outbreak! Entertainment in the theatre was very poor. We left and didn't return when a pianist, supposedly having played on Broadway, started playing 'Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head' on a ukulele and singing out of tune! The Port talks were excellent and it was good to be able to go to deck 10 for more 1st hand info. Our restaurant waiter was not the happiest person and on a couple of occasions quite rude. He quickly took plates away and brought the next course before everyone on the table had finished. I pointed this out which he did not like. The food was average. Lido food was ok but a bit repetitive. A disappointment after the New Amsterdam 3 yrs ago. Despite booking a disabled cabin and giving all details to HAL stating that my husband was a full time wheelchair user, unable to walk, not 1 port had accessible transport or shuttle and many no taxis available. He travelled to Asia for the 1st time on a special holiday and couldn't go on any tours. He should have been told this when he booked. The ship was so quiet in the evening. After dinner, unless you went to the Blues Band (limited wheelchair space) or pianists which were next to the noisy casino, it was like the Marie Celeste. Sadly I don't think we will cruise with Holland America again. Read Less

We have school reunion in Hong Kong so total 110 of us took the 5 days Vietnam cruise. If you have taken other legit cruise ships such as Princess, Celebrity, you will be solely disappointed. This cruise line just catering to Mainland Chinese, who are interested in Gambling and sight seeing. Most of them do not know how a real cruis ship oprates. We were only allowed to go into the eating area once for the 3 meals, or you will get charged extra. But for the foods they serve, no one willl want to go there the 2nd time anyway. For lunch buffet, therre were warning signs about not get burned by the steam, and I amost got burned a few times when trying to get food from the pans which were heated underneath by the steam but leaking around the edges. For dinner, we needed to have 8 people, as they serveed 8 people on each table, and they served 6 Chinese dishes family style meaning everybody digged in with their chopsticks. So you did not want to have dinner with strangers.. The protions were unbelievably small. They had some afternnon snacks, the cookies were worst than the Dollar General store varieties. My friend carried 2 cookies that he did not finish and got stopped by the ship staff that no food could leave the dining area. Had one so so dance and singing show 1 night and the ship staff forced us to stand up, applaud, and applaud, and took up 40 minutes. The show was only 30 minutes. They had music singings right in the middle of casino, with people smoking away. Had 2 levels of Casinos, with VIP rooms where they made most of their money.. Chinese passengers running around in their pajamas. One man sitting next to me during the show, messaging his bard toes. The night before the disembarkment, I asked for the luggage tags. They all gave wrong answers. Finally I got the tags from the Service Desk. They wanted to save the luggage tags also. Took 2 hours to get on the ship for 1500 passengers. And 2 hours again to get off ship. Person in charge of disembarkment admitted his job was to manage a restaurant. And they were not cheap. We paid about US $100/day per person. experience. This cruise line should be rated -1 stars if poosible. Read Less

my two take-aways from this cruise: 1) this cruise line caters to the mainland chinese, and 2) if you spend money on extras, it's great, but the included stuff is lackluster. i would go again, and i'd probably enjoy it more, having more accurate expectations and being more prepared to entertain ourselves. went on this cruise with grandmother in wheelchair, mother in upper 60s, and uncle. we had two balcony rooms, one with wheelchair access. we were happy with both rooms--comfy beds, and overall good size, efficient use of space. everything was clean and in good working order. cabin stewards were easy to reach whenever we needed anything (like towels or soap). public spaces also looked good--new and well-kept. even though there's a good english site, the cruise guests are mostly chinese. the staff seem to be mostly multilingual. there were some who didn't speak english, but an english speaker could be found easily enough. if you book shore excursions, make sure you ask about language. we were on a 5-day cruise to vietnam. we did 2 shore excursions, and they were good, but on one of them the guide only spoke mandarin. the large majority of things are multilingual on the cruise, including booking excursions, so it's reasonable to assume a tour would be multilingual--nope. i was rather annoyed, but luckily my uncle was able to translate major points for us and a few others on our tour who also spoke no mandarin. that aside, getting on a boat in halong bay is totally worthwhile. beautiful views! and it was very cool to be able to buy just-caught seafood from fishermen who come up to your boat in theirs, then have the people on your boat cook it. mother had been on a norwegian cruise, and i had been on a carnival cruise, so we had some expectations. we were rather disappointed by the included food, activities, and entertainment. we were really bored on the ship, and glad it was only a 5-day cruise. on our entire cruise, the only thing scheduled at the zodiac theater was the safety orientation. so we saw what a nice theater they had, just never had any programming to enjoy it. they played movies on the lobby screen, but i'm not going to enjoy a movie with a bunch of people constantly walking by and chatting. there was only one show (a concert by a well-known older chinese singer, popular with chinese guests) and it also was held at the lobby. there was a live band that played at one of the bars every night, and they were ok IF you liked that music. there was a party with fireworks on the last night. that was it for entertainment--no magic acts, or acrobatics, or dancing or anything. the virtual reality stuff might have been fun if it was included, but not worth the price. the dance club wasn't terrible, but there were very few cruisers under 40, so there were few people there the one night i went. the top deck attractions looked fun (i just didn't make use of them because i had to entertain my mom and grandmom). for activities, they had some dance lessons, that were decent. they offered yoga and other exercise classes, but for a fee. food. this is where i was most disappointed. tip: they sell coupons for various restaurants in the shopping area--buy some at the beginning of your trip (obviously not more than you could use). the food in the main dining room is the same as the buffet--there's not much variety and it's of mediocre quality. there was no included food at off hours--the only 24-7 food options cost extra. aside from the food itself, spending money means not having to fight the crowds. as other reviewers mentioned, there were lots of rude, pushy guests, so that's a big plus. A well organised experience supported by excellent staff made it a great cruise to very different and interesting places. The small tours and experience of travelling around on our own was great fun. We also joined four Cruise Critic excursions, which proved as usual to be well organised with great people and good value for money. Embarkation and disembarkation were the easiest that we have ever experienced. Although having to queue in the open for over an hour and a half at one of Japan’s final ports, was not great. We did not use any of the specialty restaurants as we didn’t feel the need, although would suggest that Celebrity should aim to be more adventurous in the main restaurants. More emphasis on local cuisine of the ports visited would be good. Visiting acts for the onboard entertainment were of high quality, there was definitely something to meet all tastes. Although the Millennium is looking a little worn around the edges (refit scheduled for January 2019), it must be said that it was spotlessly clean at all times. All staff presented as being efficient, well trained, helpful and friendly. Read Less

Just got off the wind star legend....wow...good thing they are taking this ship into reparations... It has seen better days... No thermostats work in the suites, 1 ply toilet tissue, main dining room a/c stuck on coldest setting, so low , a large % of passengers got a cold in the first 3 days and passed it around for a week. Outdoor seating on upper deck fine dining area had incredibly uncomfortable chairs, the skinny legs of the cheap seating kept getting stuck in the grates of the floor tipping them sideways. The 'Candles' experience was 'filled" with reservations and when you got one ,you noticed very few people there because they were so understaffed... Fillet mignonette was precut to 6 ounces , served medium to medium well no matter what you requested. Service was spotty, some nights good, some you had to ask for water. Servers would often approach table interrupting guests in middle of a sentence.. Dining hours reflected the understaffing, very limited hours it became necessary to plan around so as not to run out of certain selections. Room service menu was a set menu devoid of nightly specials... Seldom could you make a selection where to eat... Read Less

I chose Viking for a cruise around New Zealand ending at Sydney, Australia because I wanted the experience that Viking provided. Viking caters to adults, does not have a casino and includes a number of things in the price of the cruise that are ala cartel on other cruise lines. Wi-fi, drinks with meals and one excursion in each port are all included. Unfortunately, the included excursions could not always be booked. There was some real confusion as to booking included excursions. In addition , many of the included excursions conflicted with other excursions or were simply not available. We were only able to actually book two "included " excursions. There were 7 port calls. Several of the other tours offered as alternative tours, for which Viking charged, were not of good quality. I did like a number of things about the cruise. First, Viking spends a reasonable amount of time in each port. Second, the staff is extremely helpful and nice. Service was excellent except in the dinning room on one or two occasions. Our cabin was also lovely. Viking is a very different experience from Princess and Norwegian. Much more upscale and not crowded. The enrichment lectures were also excellent. I am still trying to decide whether the extra money spent on the cruise with Viking was worth it. Princess has a similar cruise for about half the cost but it is a large ship. Overall, I am happy with the cruise. Read Less

We have sailed on Viking Ocean on three different occasions, and we love the ships. There is plenty of public space and a variety of music venues. The crew is very friendly and efficient. They knew our name at the second meal! We never had to wait for a table at any of the dining venues. The food was very good as were the wines (we were on the Silver Spirits package). The spa and fitness center are great. I think the fitness center on Orion is larger than on previous ships. We also enjoyed walking the promenade deck. We like the relaxed atmosphere of Viking Cruises. It encourages interactions with fellow passengers. We met some fun people at trivia! The only disappointment on Orion was the Explorer Lounge bar. The drinks had odd ingredients-for instance lemon juice in the margarita. We didn’t find a cocktail we liked, but the desserts at Mamsens made up for it! Read Less

I had never been to Asia before or on Viking Ocean Cruise. Asia is interesting and well worth a trip. The Orion was an amazing ship, truly luxurious and beautiful. All the accommodations were excellent a lot of little extra touches; like placement of electrical charging stations, throw blankets, couches. The food was four star and the specialty restaurants were a treat The crew were gracious and attentive. My only negative on the whole trip was the way scheduled tours were handled and notified. Very poorly organized and communication about included tours and optional tours was poor to totally wrong . My wife and I would go again in a minute. In fact we are scheduled for a tour in June. The reservations and communication with Viking was excellent. The Viking web site was very good providing necessary information. The visa expense was a surprise The worst part of the trip was the Airplane trip. Unbelievably rude and just incompetent. Read Less

Pros: We chose Viking Ocean Cruises for their excellent rating and they did not disappoint. We chose the itinerary from Hong Kong to Bangkok due to the ability to really get to see that part of the world over the course of two weeks. Orion is a spectacular ship and the shore excursions provided us with an in-depth look at the real cities and real people. A perfect two weeks. Truly, everything was top notch. Rooms were spacious and beautiful and every single staff member was friendly and helpful. We felt very safe and taken care of on the excursions. Cons: Air travel. We used Viking Air to book the flights and mistakenly trusted their advice on connections and connection times. We flew from Newark, NJ to Beijing with a connecting flight to Hong Kong. Just as we feared, our incoming flight times were changed and the flight was late thus we missed the connection to Hong Kong. We were extremely tired and frustrated by the time we actually got on board the ship. Lesson learned. No connections unless absolutely necessary. And arrive 2 days before cruise departure! But would do a Viking Ocean Cruise again in a heartbeat. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary, not knowing that Haikou, China and Sihanoukville Cambodia would be terrible stopovers. Lost 2 full days at places no cruise ship should go to. The ship itself is fine (we sailed on the Viking Sea 2 years ago to Norway - a far better trip). The food at the speciality restaurants was very good, at the world café just average and very repetative. Pre cruise information from Viking was misleading, uninformed and as for the so-called "required" China visa, just plain untrue. There were couples who did not get a China visa, did not get off the ship (good move) and nothing happened. The included tours were for the most part drive bys and the paid tours over priced. If you insist on doing this cruise get a group together to do private tours. Our 6 private tours in Vietnam were wonderful and we saw and did much more for far less than the ship's paid tours. The Hong Kong and Bangkok half day included tours were good overviews. Viking is a step above Royal Carribean, Celebrity, Azama but not at the level of Regent Seven Seas, Seabourne, Silvers Seas, Oceania or Crystal. If we had known how awful Haikou and Sihanoukville were, we would have looked for a better itinerary on a more luxurious ship considering the cost. Many experienced ocean voyage travelers we met felt the same way and Viking lost quite a few prior passengers with this cruise, including us. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise because on my bucket list was SE Asia...Everyone spoke so highly of Viking we took a chance. This particular trip included air fare, a bonus for us. Viking made the arrangements and as we started to realize that we were losing two days of the trip (as of that time) we tried to change well ahead of the sail date. We were told it was too late unless we wanted to spend another $2000. That I could have done on my own. We get into port after having an extremely long flights to get to Hong Kong. The trip to the port got us on the ship about midnight. We had made an excursion for the next day. With jet lag, sleep was impossible so I was up all night and went on the excursion. BTW, if you are in a port more than one day...the so called included excursions are the same for all the days. Of course you can pay for another excursion. Trying to keep this as short as possible... The next night we went to our reserved Dine that had to be made way before we traveled. Our reservation was for 9:00 ...My boyfriend got a call at 8:15 if we had cancelled our reservation ..He said no and they told us they could take us earlier. This restaurant was supposed to highlight foods from the area visiting. That was so untrue. We were seated and immediately served the first couse. As an aside it was awful..We were served wine...Before we had an opportunity to "savor" the wine a second glass of a red was served, must breathe...We were so rushed through what was supposed to be fine dining experience, we actually asked them to slow down. They did not. They served dinner as if we were holding them up. Apparently we were as they started to clean up all the tables around us as we are trying to ascertain exactly what we were being served. I being very tired and frustrated started to cry and ran out. It was an experience...I give them that. I could go on forever, but every port was hours from towns that were not worth seeing and tours that were highly inflated in interest. We could not go to places we wanted to see as the drive time between the port distances and places of real interest would take more time to go and come than spend any time. Haikou and HaLong Bay were at best boring and out of range with travel to go to other places of interest. Of course these are our assessments, but reflect many of the other travelers we met. So on day three/four, I asked for the Viking guanantee as I could not make arrangements to get to where I wanted to go on the cruise. ...We spoke with General Manager who worked at finding us a way to take an excursion we found on Trip Advisor as opposed to another Viking tour. Of course he talked me out of taking the Viking Guanantee, knowing I would pay for my way as the guarantee spells out. I really could go on forever, but aside from losing two days of the actual trip, we also lost another day in Bangkok as the ship needed some repairs and we could not get back on in time to make our flights. Some of the tour guides went out of their way to make what was truly boring more enjoyable. I really could go on forever, but if you are not interested how the Chinese are making Sihanoukville, Cambodia into the next Macau for 2 days as they are exploiting the Cambodians...Do not take this trip...and I really could go on...and on...Oh one last thing, for those of us who needed to make flights they arranged a day room at the LeMeridan...and printed out the wrong address. We had to pay to make it to the right address..LeMeridian personel went out of their way to accoummodate us in Bangkok and for that we give them 5 Stars, LeMeridian that is! We had a total of 6 hours in Bankok...Also our trip was not 26 days..but theoretically..we spent a great deal of time going to no where places...I may not sit in the sun...So finding shaded areas was excruciating. I do have a letter of apology and/or disappointment from Viking. I will share that with them. Thanks for listening. Read Less

After reading a number of mixed reviews, I had lowered my expectations going in, but was pleasantly surprised. Everything was clean and comfortable and relatively efficient. Although we had slight concern initially that the linens appeared to not have been changed after a few days, since I noticed the same blood stain from my husband’s-cut on his finger. Although the linens did not smell, I assumed it was the same stain. I asked the front desk how often they changed them( I certainly didn’t want them changed everyday) , they said every other day, that seemed unlikely. However after my inquiry, they seemed to change them every other day, which was unnecessary, every 3 days would have been sufficient. I was a little upset that our cabin attendant notified us he was leaving the ship in Hiroshima and a new attendant would be taking his place. I asked him if he was leaving because of my inquiry, he said no , he was scheduled to leave for 2 weeks before we arrived, but his replacement was delayed due to obtaining visa, so he stayed on until his replacement arrived. He said his next assignment was on the Whisper, so no worries. I just hope that was the truth, because if he was in trouble because of my inquiry that would have upset me to no end. He was very good, our room was always cleaned well and early. After he left, our room always seemed to be the last one done on sea days , even though my parents room right next to ours was done long before ours. Oh well I don’t understand the negative comments about the food. I thought the food was very good and on par with Oceania which had been our go to cruise line prior to Silverseas. I wa not thrilled with the hamburgers at the grill at lunch, but overall I thought the food , selection and presentation were well done. The steaks especially were very good, note we like medium well and were not disappointed. We preferred the main dining room, la terrazza was also very good, but menu did not change that often. The room was comfortable and loved the walk in closet. I would say the suite (vista) was better than Oceania’s concierge level. The tv worked better than expected even out at sea, however the selection of movies was limited. although there is a DVD player, you can bring your own since their library collection may not be to your liking, at least it was not for us. They did have most cable news stations, even MSNBC( since Fox News for 15 days was not an option for us! ) and ESPN . I liked the separate workout room with free weights and a good area to do my own aerobic workout. The overall condition of the ship was good, although there were areas of the ship that may have needed some light maintenance, it was in areas that most people would not be traversing on routine basis. I would definitely recommend Silverseas although not sure if we will travel with them unless there is a good price, like we received on this one, and the itinerary is of interest. We were ok with the formal policy, but prefer not to drag that extra luggage with us. A great trip overall. Read Less

I returned to Silversea after four years (having been unable to travel in that time) and as a solo traveller for the first time - it was like coming home, from the initial warm welcome, the brilliant service, superb food (much improved since last time), lovely butler service (thank you Gideon), as much champagne as I could drink - yes Silver Shadow is a little tired in places but it is still very much a five star experience. With only once exception the on shore tours were well organised and good value. I didn't bother with the solo travellers get together after the first night as it was so easy to get to know people and I didn't have a single evening where I needed to eat on my own. The joy of small ship cruising! It was good to see some old faces on board like Kirk the Cruise Director and Anita Labs on the shore concierge desk - and lots of passengers were booking future cruises which proves to me that Silversea are still doing things right for their discerning customer base. This was our third Viking experience, previously a 15 day river and 15 day ocean. I guess I should start out by saying the the Viking ships are beautiful, well laid out it never feels congested. The cabin attendants are first class and the dining is excellent. Entertainment is limited but, we already new that. The singers and dancers on board did a very good job with what they were given. The cruises director and staff seemed to only work about half the time. Compared with our previous Viking cruise, the entertainment was almost non-existent. The guest services group ranged from very good to just another body filling up space. My wife and I flew into Hong Kong from LA two days early. it was a tough 15 HR flight and my wife experienced some issues. The Viking host at our hotel was very helpful but, it was evident that many staffers were not adequately trained to Viking standards. This would turn out to to be the overriding theme for the rest of our trip. Transportation to the Orion was uneventful and embarkation was smooth. Our luggage was delivered to our cabin within a half hour followed by the attendants. We enjoyed the ship for two days but upon arriving in Xiamen my wife was still not feeling well so we visited the medical center. Before I proceed, I just want to say that the doctor and med staff were caring, thorough and extremely professional. They had a doctor and two nurses with quite a lot of equipment. After much testing the doctor decided to send her to the hospital for further tests. We were advised to take it easy for the rest of the cruise. We cancelled our post cruise extension and were advised that we would need to file a claim with the trip insurance company(we are still working on that). Three days before disembarkation, we received the details for our four day extension for the first time(the one that we cancelled). It included baggage restrictions...we had four bags and each one was over sized according to their list. We also had medical equipment which was not allowed. For the morning flight returning to Beijing we had to leave our hotel in the early am. Bus rides and planes made up most of the time during the four day trip. The day before our final port my wife was feeling worse. We went to the med center and they kept her over night. The next morning she was transported to the hospital in Tianjin where she stayed for five days before flying back home. The reason for this long story is that the cruise had many high points and of course many lows. In the future, I would definitely travel with Viking again. I will always find out who the cruise director is before booking, and will not travel with this one. I will purchase travel insurance on my own and not use TripMate. If traveling to Asia I will fly, train, drive, book hotels on my own and hire my own guides. It is difficult to separate our personal problems with our feelings about THIS Viking cruise. Read Less

We have cruised with HAL. Celebrity, Princess, RCL, Costa, MSC, Carnival. Azamara, and Oceana. This was our third Viking Cruise, second Viking Ocean Cruise. We had a very good experience on our previous Viking Ocean cruise, including the quality of the excursions, so we were disappointed in the very poor quality of the excursions in China. Viking claims that China was not experienced in handling American visitors at most of their ports. However, when we booked a private tour with a reputable Chinese travel agency for the port for Beijing, we received excellent and knowledgeable service, were taken to a clean and high quality restaurant, had a guide who spoke good English and took care of us. The excursions that Viking provided were low quality, with make believe tour guides who could not speak English and who did not know what they were doing. The "restaurant" that we were taken to was a overcrowded "banquet hall" with dirty rest rooms that lacked soap and the food was not good. On our private tour in Beijing, the guide sat with us and made sure that people with special diet concerns got what they needed. With the Viking tour, my wife told the guide that she must have a vegetarian meal and she was assured by the guide that she would get that. What happened was that the guide totally disappeared for the whole meal. We tried to communicate with the wait staff but they did not understand English. Therefore, since the food was served family style with no explanation of what we were getting, my wife could only have tea for her lunch. Certainly not a 5 star experience. The included tours were far from being a luxury experience from a luxury ship. They were quite miserable, especially on the 6 hour round trip on a bus to the great wall. The guide barely spoke and we were left to stare out the window with no narration. When we arrived at the wall we asked if the guide was going to accompany us to the wall to provide some guidance or narration. Her answer was that she had been there before and that she had no interest in seeing it again and that we were on our own to see it. Is that what the Viking excursion department considers to be a guided tour? Since there were a number of days at sea, entertainment is important. Viking decided to have 4 singers and no dancers on this ship Viking decided to schedule only 2 shows with this limited staff which worked out to one major show per week. Some nights just a movie was shown as the "entertainment". Again, not a 5 star experience. The ship is beautiful and the food is good, especially in the specialty restaurants. The historians on board gave high quality lectures. On a 14 day cruise, Viking should provide better excursions and more entertainment. Read Less

Advertising price, itinerary. Being our first cruise we were looking for value inclusions. We accepted the varied reviews but made our decision based on what we were looking for. My Dining Time, quality table settings, sparkling white tablecloths and the wait staff so attentive, cheerfull smiling at every sitting. Quality meals, breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Windjammer excellent variety also quality produce. We didn't dine in any of the speciality restaurants, just not our style. A king bed, ocean view with balcony. Our room attendant was very pleasant always smiling, efficient and enthusiastic for our enjoyment. This ship delivered more than we were expecting. Cruise Director Michelle and her team delivered fun, exciting entertainment with such enthusiasm, this made it so easy to meet and create new friendships. Stage shows were professional and so entertaining as was the Ice skating show. Proformers, technicians all involved should be congratulated for their expertise in putting them all together. So impressed with embarkation in Hong Kong, easy stress free, with approximately 3-4 hour time frame. Singapore was not so easy, but remember we were all getting off together in a tighter time frame. So yes we enjoyed our first cruise and look forward to organising another. My advice don't take negative reviews seriously, take out what you consider fair. Read Less

They prioritize the Mainland China market with focus on loud Mandarin Karaoke, activities and crowded dancing. Nowhere for nice music, dancing, chat or fun places without overly screeching speakers. Best bar evenings reserved for Mandarin Karaoke. Half the shows were disappointing. Dance classes over crowded. Few Westerners got open dining time. Most 5.30pm or 8.30pm. Changing very difficult. We had booked anytime dining but got told 5.30pm - not possible to change. Cigarette from the casino strong and wafting up and into other areas, making adjoining areas out of scope for non smokers.. Great service from some (sadly not all) restaurant staff and cabin crew and large balcony rooms the positives. Great gym size, but most activities one has to pay for.. like no craft, cake decorating $US35. Queue for a while for rock climbing. $US12 yoga. Shore excursions a hit and miss with Vietnam spa bad English and taking us to the wrong (better) then taking us to a more commercial (disappointing) site. Another Vietnam tour guide was Excellent in comparison. Read Less

This was our 37th cruise and 10th on RCCL. By far, the ship was the biggest disappointment we have ever had and not up to the standards we have come to expect from RCCL. Voyager of the Seas is heading for drydock next year but by the looks of her, she should have been there last year. * The hull is a patchwork of rust and paint. Usually, they paint them so much that it always looks beautiful. * The carpet in the hallways is dirty and has numerous holes where luggage is left. * The public restroom floor baseboards were gross. There are not enough restrooms in public areas which results in long lines after events. The entertainment was lacking. The productions shows are always wonderful and the Broadway in the Movies was especially great, with numerous costume changes throughout. And the skating shows are always amazing considering the small ice surface and the movement of the ship. Other than that, the theater shows were lacking. One juggler (?) just thought it amusing to continually drop things. The comedian was not funny and the singer from the Philippines was fine but not very entertaining. Many people walked out of all of these shows before the end. We traveled from Hong Kong to Singapore. It was disappointing not to have any speakers to help us learn about that fascinating part of the world during our sea days. Our cabin had no coffee table so the only place to eat was on the balcony. Unfortunately, it was so hot we had to rush to eat and then run back in. Then where are we to leave our room service tray?!? I'm not sure where anyone could eat in an inside cabin. The dining room staff is obviously overwhelmed. We asked for a table of 2 but were assigned a table of 9. The tables are so squished together that the staff has trouble serving. One couple was consistently 15-20 minutes late and then the staff would slow our service for them to catch up! And the food was just plain boring and awful. For example, the JUMBO fried shrimp was 4 very small pieces with rice. They could be swallowed in one bite...that is not JUMBO! The Windjammer was JAMMED! There's lots of food stations which is great and it's huge but we struggled every time to find a place to sit. Overall, I would describe this cruise as very disappointing. We were in a wonderful part of the world and we would have appreciated enrichment and entertainment that reflected Southeast Asia and enhanced our trip. We know RCCL can do much better! Read Less

Your fellow guests - 2000 Chinese so be prepared to be pushed and shoved around. Everything on board those cruise is squarely aimed at the Chinese market, I wouldn’t have minded at all if the food had been first rate but sadly, it was not. Food:: substandard with Chinese food done badly, Western food even worse. Cabin: old, needs refurbishing Cabin amenities: generic bulk bought cream, nothing remotely resembling branded products Entertainment: laughable - apparently the 2nd runner up in the 2015 The Voice Phillipines qualifies as “first class entertainment”. What a joke. Thank goodness I took a book. Movies: child friendly, nothing for adults Cable tv - on a loop, watch the same news for 5 days Luggage: got held up in Secuirty for 7 hours, eventually had to get it myself and lug it up 9 decks. There’s a smoking area next to the pool - how healthy. Read Less

We sailed from Hong Kong and walked to the terminal. On arrival there was no signs or staff. As it was raining we headed into the first door we saw. We walked through the terminal looking at maps to work out where we needed to go. Finally we found what looked like the right place to be told no you need to go downstairs. We finally found the port staff and checked in. As we approached the ship our passports where taken from us. We was not told before hand this would happen. I went to take my landing card out but was told to leave it in. Once onboard we where very happy and the ship looked good. We got a drink and walked around the ship. We had early dining so we got ready and headed to the long queue to go for our evening meal. As we where getting to the front of the queue the line started to slow down. By now it was 6.15pm and dinning was 5.45pm. Another 5 minutes passed and we where still in the queue. 3 dining room staff where stood around the door. I finally asked what is happening and they said the dining room was full. I had to ask, no one was coming to inform us what was happening. We expressed that we had early dining to be told there is no assigned dining on this ship. We explained we was asked to choose and was told no it's an Asian cruise so no dining options, you just bascially turn up and hope there is a table. Obviously not impressed as we choice this time to dine and expected to, just like on other cruises we have been on. After 5 minutes of talking we asked if we would be assured of a table at 8pm and was told we would. Just come to the front of the queue and stand by this wall and you will be seated straight away. They also said this has never happened before but for other staff members to say it always like that so where not impressed. So on return it's another free for all with the guests and the dining staff didn't really know why we stood there. Communication was horrendous but we did finally get to sit down. All in all no assigned dining and we didn't sit on the same table each night with the same guests to share our adventures of that day which we where looking forward too. Before we left home we did alot of research on the ports and where to go and what to see. We obviously know due to weather conditions this can change but once we arrived in Okinawa we had to go through immigration. We where not informed of this when we booked our cruise or any day before we sailed. This took one and a half hours so the plans we had made we where not able to go ahead with due to losing so much time. It was very disappointing as we could have been informed of this before hand and not got our hopes up of visiting the places we wanted too. We also planned to get day travel cards in Japan but this was not possible as our passports where taken off us. They would only except the original passport and not the photocopy we had so this cost us more money to travel around. ALWAYS WATCH THE BAR STAFF MAKING YOUR DRINKS! We do not blame the bar staff as this happened several times at several different bars with several different bar staff so they are clearly told to them to do this. But they would use house spirits instead of branded spirits. We often had to stop them or ask them if it was our drink they where making. One bar server was like ermm no no that's not yours when we pointed out he was using the wrong spirits. They would happily replace it and make a fresh but this shouldn't happen in the first place and it is illegal. We are not big gamblers but we do like tonhave a little play on roulette. Unfortunately this was not possiable due to the higher game limits. Basically because it was an Asian cruise they increased the minimums which meant we couldn't enjoy a game. The staff confirmed it was because it was Asia, but what about the rest of us on board. Please the Asians but not the rest of the world. I guess it saved us money by not gambling! There was plenty to do onboard and the rest of the cruise went by smoothly ( but still watching what our drinks where made with )until we collected our passports. As we gave our room number and where passed our passports my landing card was missing. The staff member said you can get another one at the airport. Obviously I was annoyed and said why should I waste my time at the airport when its the companies fault. She said it's one of those things and tried to usher me away. I didn't go anywhere and said can't you check through the box. She eventually said she would have a new landing card delivered to my stateroom. Why could she not have said this in the first place?? Really sorry but I can get a replacement sent to your stateroom. No fuss and the situation dealt with but instead she couldn't be bothered. A new landing card was delivered to our stateroom along with my missing landing card. It really wasn't that hard to sort a small issue. We did enjoy the cruise and ports and the ice show was amazing but it's the little details that are making us think if we should cruise with royal carribean again as this hasn't happened on our other cruises with other cruise companies. The issue that I have experienced was: This being our 5th/6th RCI cruise we know what to expect generally and that is why we like to cruise with them. Due to the circumstances not highlighted in advance to us, many of the services provided were either not available or changed for the worst etc. Examples are - 1) No set table for evening dining. This meant that queues formed each night as the staff struggled to place parties on tables that had space. 2) This meant that you never knew who you would be sitting with or who the waiters were likely to be. No relationships could be formed with either our fellow cruisers or the waiters who usually go out their way to know and understand your needs, likes and dislikes. 3) Menus poorly explained and lack of vegetarian options. 4) Food served at a lukewarm temperature. 5) Very poor sized portions unless you ordered the main dish of the day. 6) Lunch menu served in the main restaurant offered no Vegetarian options and it was so busy, no one was able or willing to help. 7) Due to a full ship, tables were almost impossible to obtain in the Windjammer (self service eaterie) even though they continually requested for people to vacate tables when they had finished eating. 8) Same problem in the morning at breakfast time but midway through the cruise they began opening the Chops Grill Room as an overflow which did help. 9) The virtual balcony in our stateroom, half the time did not work or the clarity was exceptionally poor. The room steward reset it regularly but in the main it was a waste of time. 10) The Windjammer/Ice cream machines had very restricted opening times which meant that should you want a refreshments outside of the limited set meal times, the 3800 passengers had a single option of the 5th floor coffer bar which obviously could not cope with the volume of people wanting to take advantage of this facility. 11) When leaving the ship on the last day, due to their being a second cruise liner also in port, the customs in Hong Kong could not cope with getting people through the necessary checks and out the terminal. We waited 40 minutes and were still far back in the numerous queues. We had booked RCI transport and only after our long wait did someone come looking for us (and others) to get us quickly through the crowd and onto the coach as it was delaying the transport of people to their hotel, railway stations etc. 12) Regular RCI cruisers were disgusted at the way this cruise was handled are like us were totally surprised at the poor level of service. First time RCI cruisers all stated that it would be their first and last RCI cruise. It occurred on: 10/08/2018 Read Less

My wife and I chose the cruise as it was going to Japan where we had never been. We were never advised by Royal Caribbean or the travel agent that the cruise would be mainly occupied by the Chinese. I have nothing against Chinese but when it came to dining they occupied all the tables and chairs in the Buffet restaurant. After they finished their meals they would not leave the table but would sit talking and playing games on their phones. They put out an announcement for people to vacate thr tables after their meals so that others could sit down, but they did this in english and not Manderin. When I complained to the catering manager only then did they start making announcements in Mandarin, it didn't make any difference. It is the worst experience my wife and I have had on a cruise. When we booked the cruise no one advised us that the cruise would be occupied with mainly people from china. I understand that there was only about 400 westerners and over 3,000 chinese on board. The food was very repetitive and you had to fight your way through the Chinese to get to the food. If you went down to the Boardwalk Cafe to get a coffee and a sandwich the area was again occupid by the Chinese. They would just be sitting there playing games on their mobile phones and talking. We considered the entertainment was very ordinary The ship is getting old and needs an over haul. We had a Balcony cabin which was good and the attendant was excellent. When we got to our first port of call it was a public holiday and everything was closed. We have traveled with Royal Caribbean before but I am sorry to say we wont be travelling with them again. Compared to our previous 12 cruises and as Gold status members, our overall experience was extremely disappointing. * Food was ordinary to say the least and totally unacceptable everywhere on the the ship except for the specialty restaurants which we were forced to attend to enjoy some sort of quality food/service. To be served mashed potato, carrots and brocolli with almost every dish served in the main dining room (including Jumbo Prawns on formal night) shows a complete lack of skill and judgement by the catering management. * We experienced extreme rudeness, loud unacceptable crowding from the mostly Chinese passengers on board. * The staff were inadequate to handle this behavior and it was generally accepted. * Royal Caribbean displayed a complete lack of health and comfort or consideration to allow smoking in the casino on board so that their profits were not affected by the loss of the mostly Asian patrons. * Forced to make a formal complaint about our totally incompetent tour guide which we purchased on board for our day trip to Osaka. We would find it difficult to consider another Royal Caribbean cruise in future due to the consistently poor standards and cost saving measures. Read Less
