Zuiderdam was our first HAL experience. It was our worst overall ship and cruise experience ever.

I've sailed with Holland America three times in the past, all prior to the COVID pandemic. The Westerdam, the Nieuw Amsterdam, and the Eurodam. Each ship impressed with it's service, food, comfort, and laid back style. I am not a fan of the mega ships that are out there and Holland America tends to run in the mid-size ship category.

This was the worst service I’d ever experienced on a ship. They didn’t seem to have enough crew for sailing at full capacity.
Food in the main dining room was quite pedestrian, with emphasis on inexpensive foods such as chicken and pasta. Portions were consistently small. Traditional sides such as garden salad and baked potato were not available. There were even fewer menu choices on the ...

Had an awesome cruise, 7 day Caribbean.
ship is from 2002 but renovated in 2017/18
My wife and I have sailed primarily Royal, Celebrity, Princess, NCL, Carnival and my wife Cunard in the past, over 40 cruises.
1900 passengers and 9 decks with lots of elevators.
many were on 2, 3 and 4 week back to back cruises
we are 65 and 68 so almost felt young!!

The cruise was fine, let me start by saying that. But the ship is showing it's age. People were calling it the "rusterdam" because of all the rust evident everywhere. The chair is our room was in deplorable condition. Took pics and sent them to Guest relations. Arms were filthy and the whole chair stained. The crew was amazing as always.

Having done the same cruise on NCL, I found HAL quieter, friendlier and more upscale. Their Half Moon Cay was a pleasant surprise - much nicer than NCL's private island. My signature suite was large; you could throw a small party on the balcony. While the Pinnacle Grill was not worth the extra charge, overall the food, especially in the main Vista dining room, was very good.
