Old ship Needs improvement.
"The reason I given was that previously, a guest had tripped on the orange carpet, which designates the orange line for people that pay for faster service.Last but not least, the temperature in the ship was extremely cold, the last three days of our cruise, even after asking staff to do something about it, and I heard from many other passengers, the same thing...."Read More

Review for a Panama Canal & Central America Cruise on Zaandam

I chose this cruise as an option. I was offered by Holland America . The employees on the ship were doing the best that they could although I think most of them were brand new. The main reason for my review is the “orange package”. It was not what it appeared to be. Getting on and off the ship it worked wonderfully, but on the ship not so much. There was not a dedicated line for shore excursions ...

Problems abound on ship straight out of dry dock, good ports

Spouse wanted to transit Panama Canal and this cruise was the right time, ports and price. However we found out Zaandam was coming out of dry dock for this cruise from Cruise Critic, not HAL. It was not ready. Our cabin reeked of construction adhesive for the while 23 days as the bathroom had been completely remodelled (looked great, smelled horrible but love the new shower which replaced the ...

Hadn't cruised since last fall and the So. American ports was something new and the e-mailed price was very good. Much of the HAL experience is excellent as always. Dining Room, Cabin Stewards and Bar staff do a great job. Am a 4 star mariner with HAL and have witnessed a continual reduction of standards. Evening dinning menu choices were just OK. Number of options have been reduced a good ...

Holland is living in the past in many ways

I liked this itinerary and that's why I chose this cruise. The crew was excellent, as usual, but the HAL ships are falling behind the marketplace. Last year I took six cruise lines in 12 months to check out the state of the art in the industry. Lines cruised were HAL, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Disney, and Carnival. I have also recently cruised on Celebrity. Holland America appeals ...

After returning from a Panama Canal on the Maasdam, sorting thru upcoming cruises the 32 day explore South America Passage and Inca Discovery was of great interest. Fortunately for future travelers, the Zaandam is going in to dry dock to be rehab in 2018. In the Lido dining the chair cushions show great ware as they are sunken in. There was very little variety of foods from day to day. No ...

Disappointing

Check in was a breeze as we were in a Neptune suite. Others complained of a disorganised shambles and taking up to 3 hours! Suite appeared very nice, but the bathroom DEFINATELY needs a serious upgrade compared to other top suites we have had on other ships.Toilet was blocked. Bedding was great, very comfortable and plenty of pillows. For the size of suite TV needs to be bigger. Use of Neptune ...

This was our first cruise on Holland America. We've cruised three times before on other lines. Overall, this was a good experience, not the best cruise we've taken but not the worst either. One port of call was Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The ship stayed overnight and this allowed us to experience some of the nightlife. This was the first cruise we took that did this. We had the time to find ...

A sad experience with HAL a cruise line that I loved

I try to sail on a HAL ship once every 2 years. I normally go to the Mexican Riviera in the winter to use their excellent thermal suite and work out equipment. I consider it my spa week to relax. This was my first time on the Zaandam. I liked the layout of the ship; smaller than most but not crowded even though it was Easter break week. We ( my son and I ) were upgraded to a partial ...

This was my second experience sailing, and my partner's first. I want to make clear that we did enjoy ourselves. So it isn't necessarily that it was a horrible experience. But it was definitely less than I expected. First, the good. Zaandam is a small ship. I had previously sailed on a large Royal Caribbean ship, and I had a hard time getting to know people. On this sailing, we made a lot of ...

The Sea of Cortez is a new cruise area and the shore excursions will need some upgrading to make them value for money.   Food selection was quite good but the food service level in the main dinning room was more rushed than that received on HAL ships Prinsendam & Ryndam. The main dinning room was understaffed compared to those ships and service staff were very rushed.Drinks service was very ...
