Love Alaska; Holland Not So Much

Review for a Alaska Cruise on Westerdam

I've cruised 20+ times; three to Alaska...unfortunately twice on Holland. I selected this cruise (knowing I might be disappointed with some things) because it was when I wanted to go (before summer), with the itinerary I preferred (Sitka instead of Skagway) and at a reasonable solo price (because I was in the line's Mariner Society). Embarkation was crazy and slow. The agent who was supposed ...

Cruise was OK except for wait staff

Cruise was nice - Wait staff left something to be desired (especially breakfast) Our MAIN problem was it seemed once the waiters brought your food they acted like you didn't exist any more. If you needed drink refills; more bread; or basically anything... you were out of luck... We started to deduct tips for poor service and now wish we would of. Our cabin stewards were excellent; Once we ...

SERVICE WAS LACKING!!!

I went with Holland America because I had never cruised with them and had been told they were the best. Well if this cruise is any indication of the customer service that Holland offers, it will certainly be my last cruise with them. The pickup at the airport was not as smooth as you would expect, with them herding people into lines with no place to sit or really get out of the weather. There ...

Alaska Cruise to Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan

This was our second cruise, with the first being with Norwegian. The disembarkation process was excellent. We were assigned a color and number (Pink 3) based on our desired disembarkation time (we chose 9-9.30). We could not hear the speaker calling our ticket so we could go to the gangway. We happened to hear them announce that all tickets had been called (this was at about 8.30), and we were ...

Average Cruise: Good if you're looking for budget friendly with low expectations.

The "Beautiful and Elegant Westerdam" is average at best. It's a great budget friendly cruise to Alaska but as far at the "cruise" experience... MEH has been a great description used by other travelers. My friend and I were celebrating with a girls trip. We are mid 30s, well traveled and have had our fair share of a variety of accommodations. We stayed in a 4th floor Verandah/Balcony Suite. ...

First cruise on HAL

We are in our late 60s and love cruising. We usually go to be on the ship and not for the ports. As a result, we seldom book excursions. Alaska and Hawaii are the exceptions. Europe would be an exception if we went there but so far, no go. We are on a fixed income, located near the west coast and by budgeting carefully and shopping for deals, we manage to take 2-3, 7-night or longer cruises a ...

I will preface by saying this was our 7th cruise overall and 3rd to Alaska, but our first with Holland America. Let's start with what was good. Embarkation was fairly easy and our staterooms were accessible as soon as we boarded. Our veranda stateroom was spacious although the layout does make it difficult to move about. The room is well appointed with plenty of storage and the bathroom was ...

Good cruise ship if you are on a diet or plan to sleep all day

I have cruised over 20 times and I chose this ship because it was smaller. I had booked in August, 2015 for my wife and I and she passed away shortly before the trip. I was told that I could not change the travel date but that I could change the passenger only one time complimentary. Shortly after that I called to change the name and was told that they had canceled my wife since she had passed ...

Disappointed with Holland.

We had a great time seeing Alaska, the weather was great and the scenery was beautiful but the ship was lacking in many areas. We had cruised on Holland many times in the past and really liked Holland. We are 3 Star Mariners but we stopped several years ago and started cruising on Princess, Royal and Celebrity solely due to Holland's smoking policy. We had too many bad experiences of sitting on ...

April 2014 we were in French Polynesia and had a wonderful time. This time we choose a Volandam cruise Seattle - Sydney - Bali because we thought the itinerary looked great as well. It was partly great indeed, but also partly disappointing. e.g. To me it is a mystery why the ship went to Mystery Island. A lost day. In Honolulu the hop on hop of bus was not available. HAL had rented it for some ...
