This was our first experience with HAL. We selected it because of the good itinerary and competitive cost.
PROS: this is a big, safe and high tech ship. Nice atmosphere at the Casino. There was always good and consistent temperature in all public areas and cabins...very compfortable. Good support from the Front Desk staff.
CONS: Cheap shows, cheap muscicians, cheap artists and poor ...
Typically cruise on Princess but wanted to try this due to itinerary. Hard not to compare Princess against Holland America. On the positive side we like the larger bathroom. Also the staff is great. On the not so positive side: The ship itself is old and is not well maintained compared to Princess ships except for cabins. Too much up selling in all areas. For example, Consistently being asked if ...
We had 3 choices for this itinerary from Canada to Ft. Lauderdale (inc. Zaandam from Montreal & either Zuiderdam or RCL AOS from QC), but we chose the Zuiderdam because of its sail date that would allow us to spend my wife's birthday with our friends in Quebec City. We are 3 star Mariners on HAL and will probably stop there and not choose HAL again when compared to the significantly better ...
We went early and explore Quebec City before the cruise. Our hotel-Hotel Le Priori was centrally located and we walked everywhere. Go the the L'Oriyin restaurant which offered organic and local food.
The pier was just two blocks away from our hotel and we walked to the ship on embarkation day. The ship was nice and clean with lots of space for quiet reading and sitting. However, there were ...
Chose this cruise because it stopped in Canaveral and we could disembark there rather than going to FLL. Other than that, the ports were pretty ordinary - Princess had better ports from Quebec to FLL and would have taken Princess except for the preferred disembarkation at Canaveral. We did lose a whole day by doing that. We were forced to disembark at 7:45. They did take our bags to the gates, so ...
Given the Zuiderdam's age, and taking into consideration the reports that the intended updates were not fully realized on the last scheduled dry dock due to a labor strike, the ship doesn't look as worn as you might think. Of course you can easily see signs of age and wear and tear, but nothing to spoil a cruise, assuming reasonable expectations.
Having said that, the realities are this:
1. ...
My wife and I booked this cruise for its itenerary and the chance to see some fall colors. Dining in the main dining room exceeded expectations. The food and presentation were very good and the wait staff seemed generally very efficient. We had open seating and shared tables for almost every meal. A low pressure front with very high winds and seas caused us to miss 2 ports which was understandable ...
My DW and I both wanted to see the changing of the trees so we booked this cruise (and indeed the trees were wonderful). The Zuiderdam was the HAL ship we sailed on years ago and enjoyed so much that we have been sailing on HAL ever since. We are both partly retired and can go when we find a cruise to interest us. For us the flying is usually the worst part of the adventure.
We arrived in ...
This cruise is the only one I have ever taken that was just average. It was a dissappointment. Missed ports, storms, power outages, late to port, chaos at disembarkation and no compensation other than a glass of alcohol for nondrinkers and refunded port fees.
The Cabin and dining staff were as always, top notch. They always seem to be their very best and make the ship the best experience ...
We were looking forward to a "Fall Colors" cruise. It was our second HAL cruise, the first being aboard the Neuw Amsterdam. Enjoyed Quebec City and Saguenay but then got hit by a "subtropical depression" and missed the next two ports of Charolettown and Sydney due to hurricane force winds (up to 90kt.s and 30-40ft. sea!) but ship handled it well and crew was confident and helpful for the 60 or so ...
