Avoid this ship and probably this cruise line

Review for a Panama Canal & Central America Cruise on Oosterdam

This was our 12th cruise, 2d on HAL. What a disappointment! Ship is tired, scuffed, dirty and smelly. Needs a major renovation. Design is dated, but more important it's just old and not well maintained. The ambience of the ship transferred to many (but by no means all) of the staff, many of whom seemed just as tired as the ship and were simply going thru the motions. The food was ...

HOLLAND AMERICA ELIMINATES ENTERTAINMENT SHOWS

We chose this cruise because hal hadn't disappointed on prior cruises, and because the ports were what we wanted to visit. unfortunately. Hal has changed their entertainment policy, eliminating the grand musicals of old, replacing them with, for example, a gymnast, a mini-harp player running around the audience, sitting in laps, an 8pm travel documentary, and a lame juggler. (the act was lame). ...

Tried to enjoy Holland America for a third time-Never Again

Review for a Caribbean - Southern Cruise on Zuiderdam

My wife and I chose this cruise because of a special promotion and it being a Panama Canal cruise. The ship itself was well maintained and the overall service was good, at best. The Captain and the crew were quite visible during the cruise and friendly. Service in the Lido Market was quite remarkable as compared to the dining room where if you arrived 45 minutes late, you weren't served. This ...

Beware of passport card and Holland American lack of service.

Our family chose the Panama Canal 10 day cruise with Holland American. We had 6 adults and 3 children. We planned this cruise a year in advance. When we got to Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale 2 of us had passport cards and were not allowed to board the ship. The passport cards would not work, so if you are planning a cruise that requires a passport do not get the passport card and note you ...

As frequent travellers, we are used to backpacking, expeditions, and vacations in 1 to 5 stars resorts, all inclusive or not, on all continents, but we never travelled with a large cruises ship. Yes, we had preconceptions about cruises, on their misuse of obsolete maritime transport laws to create tax free tourist resorts. Or their bypass of immigration laws and hiring cheap labour from around ...

My wife and I had been planning this cruise for several years to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary as well as her completing her PhD. We had booked an ocean view cabin on Deck #1. We did not find out until out first night that we had a cabin under the B.B.King nightclub! Could someone please explain to me why a cruise line would put passengers in a cabin under a noisy night club! We ...

The cruise started with the worst embarkation situatin. We need wheelchair assistance to embark because of the long walks. Holland America's Ft. Lauderdale operation to have two wheelchairs used for a significant number of people. who would be taken to a table top counter, processed and assigned to a holding area to await wheelchairs to board the ship. Never, in our 50 some cruise experiences, ...

The good - Our room stewards, our waiter and wine steward and most of the folks in the Lido especially Jen and "the Sandman." The cleanest of all 4 ships we have sailed on with HAL -and the crew was the fussiest about it especially in the LIDO. The best - cruise director Bruce, the Captain, Luisa in Guest services. Jim and Charles were 2 of the best lecturers we have encountered cruising ...

Panama Canal was on our bucket list, so we were really looking forward to this cruise. It's our third cruise with Holland America and the other two were perfect. Sadly, this was not the case for this cruise. I would definitely go with another cruise/ship line. We had a balcony which was great for the canal portion. The drapes in the cabin were shabby and it took 4 days to fix curtain pull. We ...

Zuiderdam Needs to Be Retired

We took this 11 day cruise because of excellent experience on the Westerdam a few years ago. This was our "bucket list" trip through part of the Panama Canal. Unfortunately, this is one of the oldest ships in the HA fleet and most passengers complained of the motion sickness which has never bothered us on several cruises before. We observed that by the end of the trip there were at least 20 ...
