Very disappointing . We have been on this very ship several times before. Things have changed. Very little entertainment and slow dining service. They seem to have reduced dining wait staff. This was a very lovely crossing. Many more pros than cons. To begin with, the sailing was delayed by a full day due to strong winds and high seas preventing the ship from getting into port. The overnight in Barcelona spent waiting for the ship was expertly and efficiently handled. I am a member of the Mariner Society and have sailed a number of times on Holland America. It had been a few years between sailings and this past cruise was a hugh disappointment in almost every respect. Only the Indonesian staff have keep the high quality. The food was sub-par. Having sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam before, I was so disappointed in the entertainment. One night there was no show at all! The music was mostly Motown, not my favorite. The HAL Cats were missing. The ballroom dancing was not available some nights and the band had never played together before this cruise so it took too long between songs and they did not play long enough.

We had a great time. There were amazingly calm seas. The dining room experience was good - they accommodated special (low sodium) diet issues and that was excellent. This was another good cruise...our first TA and our 15th HAL cruise. The "dry-dock" continued right up to the last day when we left the ship in Venice. It was more nuisance that inconvenience but it would have been nice if they had completed the work before selling tickets on the next cruise.

My wife and I did a 26 day cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam from Fort Lauderdale, Fl to Venice –- with 16 stops covering 7 countries. I have been on about 15 cruises covering many lines.
