This was our first cruise with Holland America, and we were not disappointed. We flew to Honolulu and sailed back to Sydney, a 15 night segment of a longer cruise. There were lots of sea days on this sector which is what we wanted to just kick back and relax. If you are looking for a party this is probably not the ship for you as the average passenger age was probably 55-60+, which is also our ...
This was our seventh cruise on HAL but our first on the Noordam and certainly our longest at 39 days. We thoroughly enjoyed it, which is why we keep coming back to HAL, but are concerned that the cutbacks in service are continuing. At some point we pray that HAL will stop cutting back and maintain the quality that we have come to expect. We experienced the first cutback just after boarding the ...
This was my fourth cruise on the Volendam in past three years.
Last year I did the reverse Sydney to Vancouver so I was well aware of sea days and port calls and quite familiar with the Volendam.
Overall it was a pleasant cruise with lots of sea days which I often enjoy more than all the hectic activity of port days.
A few observations:
The Volendam is well maintained and the ...
I took this cruise to Hawaii because of the long days at see. I was in Cabin 6127 on the Veranda Deck. Great stateroom, cabin stewards very attentive. Loved spending time on my balcony - private sunbathing, private reading and late night drink. Dining in the main " walk in" dining room was awful. You could walk in but you would have to wait forever. Finally, when I wanted to dine there I made a ...
I should preface this review by saying that even a bad cruise isn't totally bad. On the other hand, I haven't done a Carnival Cruise in a while (ha).
4 out of my last 5 cruises have been on Holland America but this Zaandam cruise was (by far) the worst.
My first cabin was 1882 on the Dolphin deck. On the first night of the cruise the seas became a bit rough and we began to hear this loud ...
Embarkation: We boarded the Zaandam in San Diego. Boarding was fast and efficient. We arrived at the pier around noon and were in our cabin by 12:30. The staff both on shore and on board were very helpful.
Stateroom:
We were in cabin 2603 (center, starboard side). As with previous HAL ships, the stateroom was roomy and comfortable. Our cabin was not particularly clean.. This was ...
Took advantage of the opportunity to do the 4 repositioning (Vancouver to Victoria to San Diego)+ 14 days Hawai'i (from and to San Diego).
Group of passengers on the 4 day cruise was very different from the usual HAL niche: several children and babies and a much younger crowd. This leg of the trip was not a typical HAL cruise as the activities were very different. It was still an enjoyable ...
I picked this cruise because of the itinerary and because it left and returned to Vancouver (our neck of the woods). My husband and I are in the 35-54 demographic so wondered if Holland America was the right cruise line for us but were certainly willing to give it a try.
Turns out that there were only a few minor drawbacks to sailing on a line pretty much dedicated to not only seniors but the ...
Let me preface this review by pointing out our previous cruises have all been on ships with a maximum of 700+ passengers. So, while I realize there are people devoted to HAL, my view is going to be that of someone experiencing a large non-luxury ship for the first time. We chose HAL as non-of our preferred ships were scheduled for a Hawaii round trip at the time we wanted to go. This was also our ...
Waited awhile to write this review as I wanted to be as objective as possible and let the little things float away and see what stuck in my memory.
That said, we are long-time cruisers having traveled on ships of all shapes and sizes. Several HAL trips, including a previous voyage on the Oosterdam, make it possible for me to be somewhat objective as we pretty much knew what to expect when we ...
