We chose this cruise because we live in Vancouver and didn't have to fly anywhere, we also love the 5 sea days each way.
Embarkation took a very long time - our luggage got to our room before we did. Disembaraktion was very easy.
I found the ship poorly laid out. It is a bunch of small, chopped up rooms with pillars every time you turn around. There are so many pillars in the Vista ...
The service was pretty good but no one went above the basics. The food was definitely a disappointment! The menu sounded great but what we were served did not reflect what was written! That applied to the appetizers, meat (chicken was usually the best choice), veggies were mundane and the desserts were repetitive. I don't care for spicy or exotic tasting things but it all just tasted the same, ...
We chose this cruise due to the number of sea days as well as it left from Vancouver, BC. Having been on several other HAL cruises I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the food in the main dining room, didn't seem quite up to par and very long wait for meals. The wait staff seemed very busy and not as chatty as on previous cruises. We like to have a set dining time and absolutely loved ...
Having been on a number of cruises with Holland and having over 50 cruises of varying lengths we chose this one for the itinerary. While the entire trip was above average there were things like no hot water in our suite for the first week, long dinners (2.5 hrs at times) due to insufficient or lazy waitstaff, desk personnel who couldn't or wouldn't take responsibility and help, and a cruise ...
This cruise was chosen strictly for itinerary, which was a long-held dream come true. The ship and cabin got very old, very fast. Surely, the cuisine could have more variety -- all those chefs that claim to have input! Cabin attendants were superb -- could not do enough for us. Wish they had a better product to offer. The terrifying toilet (watch out!) and the much-too-heavy bath door destroy ...
This was our 6th cruise and the third aboard ms Noordam, our last cruise was back to back on this ship on the Med. And we really enjoyed that.
So based on our previous Hal experience we booked Alaska on the Nieuw Amsterdam... EXCELLENT.
The Noordam was a 29 night PACIFIC CROSSING and our expectations were high based on Hal experiences.
BUT, our STATEROOM ( nice as it was, clean and neat ...
This cruise was on our "bucket list!" The ports in New Zealand and Australia that we did visit were good. We did run into a mechanical problem and were not able to sail to Auckland or Bay of Islands. This was unfortunate, but these things happen and I feel we were fairly compensated for the delay. We did spend an extra day in Napier and everything that could be done was done to make our extra ...
We thoroughly enjoyed the ports we visited, however we did encounter a few missed ports due to both weather conditions and a problem with the ship's starboard thrusters. Parts had to be ordered from Finland so we spent two days in Napier. Unfortunately Aukland did not have a berth to house the ship the next day so we returned to Sydney. We also missed the Bay of Islands stop.
The food on the ...
Our first HAL cruise, re-positioning from Sydney to Vancouver. The price was right and there were plenty of sea days which we like. Boarding was easy as there were quite a number of transit passengers that had boarded in New Zealand. Our first impression of the internal areas of the ship were 'Dull and Dark` with a capital D. It has an interior decor that just sucks up the light and makes ...
We have sailed on Holland America many times but this was the most disappointing. Firstly the same cruise a year ago was the same price and was 29 days with 7 more port stops which was excellent. Secondly it appears to us as guests that Holland America is trying to cut costs by reducing the number of staff in the dining room and Lido. We mostly had to wait for a table in the dining room and ...
