Really enjoyed the Trip. Although a little aged, the ship is very easy get around and to feel comfortable. The deck 8 renovations have opened up the space but you can still find a quiet corner to relax or have a cocktail. Food was better than expected both in the restaurants and lido cafe. My only complaint was I booked an ocean view cabin 337 on lower promenade (deck 6) knowing it’s location etc,. Unfortunately it was the only cabin on this deck that didn’t have the reflective glass to prevent passerby’s from seeing into the cabin when the lights were on and even the sheer drapes were not totally effective in blocking viewing into the cabin. When I complained about this they apologized and offered another cabin on a lower deck because unfortunately they did not have any reflective film to correct the problem. Because I specifically chose the location and was traveling with other friends in nearby launi cabins I opted not to move to the cabin offered but kept the drapes closed more time then I would have liked. The women at the front desk knew exactly which cabin I was in as soon as I mentioned the problem. Read Less

Pros: Balcony cabins were HUGE with Flat Screen, Tons of Free Movies, Couch & Full Bath Super comfy beds Great Main Stage Entertainment (though the shows were only 30-45 minutes long) Exceptional Music provided by dueling pianists across from the casino at night Super Clean Everywhere & Excellent Food & Staff Delicious Menu Choices in Main Dining with Lots of Variety Every Night Cons: Cabin #8139 was below the Buffet Eating Area (Lido) so you heard chairs scraping above you all morning and late into the night. Pictures taken by the ship were VERY expensive i.e. $3100 was quoted for one photo session No couch-type chairs on deck - only cheap uncomfortable ones unless you paid more money for private cabanas. Worth Noting: You are asked to wear long pants to dinner every night but the first one. 2 formal nights require button down shirts and slacks for men. Hard to find excursion information on board - decide BEFORE you go and do you research ahead of time. Much Older Crowd. We were the babies on board and we are 46 :) Ports: We love beaches and stay away from most excursions. Amber Cove Dominican Republic: Walked past everything out to the street & got a Taxi for $40 to take us Down to the Fort and to Cosita Rica Beach for several hours. It was beautiful and worth every penny. No snorkeling here. San Juan Puerto Rico: Took a Taxi for $20 each way to Alambique Beach - absolutely beautiful but no snorkeling here either. St. Martin: Airport Experience & Snorkeling Tour was a waste of time and money - nothing worth seeing at all at the airport and no good or interesting sea life. Half Moon Cay: PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT beach but not great snorkeling. Sand was SOFT and FINE and the ocean was warm - wish we could stay there FOREVER! Read Less

We booked this cruise during the Cyber sale, after Thanksgiving. It was a good deal and we were ready for a little down time. As I have found to be the usual for Holland America, the staff on the Eurodam are wonderful! The entertainment good although somewhat limited. We really enjoy Billboard on Board and the Lincoln Center. Activities late at night are lacking, as is the availability of food late in the evening, Most evenings Room Service and Pizza were the only options from 8:30pm to 10:30pm, the buffet reopens for an hour at 10:30pm with late night bites. We had early seating dinner and it would have been nice to grab a snack in the evening between Billboard onboard shows, one usually ended at about 9:30pm but the next one started at either 10:30 or 10:45. We took to grabbing cheese and crackers and some fruit at lunch and storing them in our room for snacking between shows. The food in the dining room was mediocre most of the time. The desserts were seriously lacking, the Creme Brulee was a gelatinous texture rather than custard like and many of the other desserts lacked flavor/sweetness/salt. Great for some but I like my desserts "fat and sugar added." The service, however was wonderful as usual. Food is subjective, but this was my experience from my view. We took a fabulous shore excursion through HAL, the RePapel Paper recycling tour. A lot of fun and doing some good. We had a lot of down time and spent that relaxing on our balcony, napping or watching a movie in our cabin. Other than the disappointments with the food. I'd have to say the cruise was all in all a great time. Read Less

My wife and I (as well as most others) was to visit Cuba. The other ports, Grand Cayman, Costa Maya and Cozumel. Because we had been to the three ports, we didn't spend much time in the ports. Here is a recap to the cruise: Embarkation - We took the air program thru HAL. Best move we could have made. We left Hartford in snow - on time. Our connection was in Charlotte where it was also snowing, Things looked good until we got out of the terminal. It took over 2 hours to de-ice our plane, needless to say we are now on borrowed time to get to the ship. We got to the ship 5 minutes before it left. HAL's shore people were outstanding. They waited for us at the airport, had a bus waiting and got us to the pier with no time to spare. Cruise personnel were waiting and rushed us on the ship. Rating: A+ Entertainment - Spotty at best. We usually go to the evening shows but I think we made 2, the others seemed to just kill time. Rating: C- Food - Dining room food was good, the servers seemed to be spread thin, we never got a chance to get to know them. We ate at the Pinnacle and the Italian restaurant, Both were very good. The Lido's choices were limited, unless you liked pork. No real food lines. Rating: B- Room: We had a balcony. Everything worked and the staff were excellent. Rating: A Excursions: Only tours taken where in Havana. The car tour was just fair, drove around 2 hrs with a driver who spoke no English. We did a p to p stop both days which were very interesting. The next morning we took the walk around Old Havana. Fair, some people walked around on their own which would have been better. A lot of people were unhappy because HAL never notified anyone that they added tours later in the year. Therefore they didn't get to see much of Havana. Rating: C+ Debarkation: Excellent. Rating A+ All in all, glad we went but next time will go for a longer period and go on a cruise that had a lot more to do. Read Less

We were in a Neptune suite thanks to an amazing last-minute offer of an upgrade. Given my husband and I must do some work while away, this was welcome, with room to stretch, great lounge, amazing staff. We visited Cuba, the highlight of the trip. We dined nearly every morning in the Pinacle Grill, an option available for suite customers. Honestly, this alone was nearly worth the cost of the upgrade to suite level. The demographics of the cruisers was typical of Holland America, mostly older adults, but also believe this was in part due to the time of year when no one is off from school, etc. While that might bother some, this did not bother us, though we were among the younger couples on board. (And we are not that young!) We are not gamblers, nor do we care for the big production entertainment, cannot really comment on casino, theater, but really enjoyed the violin and piano duo, jazz trio, etc. We have committed to another HAL cruise next spring. I choose this cruise because it went to Cuba - overnight. I travelled solo. The first night they had a solo travel meet-up in the bar and it was empty. And they never did again like on other ships. My room was great -632. And the two stewards were fabulous. I was so disappointed in the Lido Cafe. They are only open certain hours. And they close completely between 8-10:30. And then reopen with a “fast food” type of buffet for an hour except the last two nights - it was 11-1. I asked the supervisors why isn’t it open on one side until 12. Like most ships and he responded the crew needs to prepare and they need their breaks! Sorry not my problem. I probably would avoid the Veendam for this . Also i saw a supervisor reprimand two hard working servers in the Lido Cafe the last morning in front of me. I felt so bad I tipped the server. The information about CUBA was so misunderstood. Just for instance the instructions on the paper they give us says not to smile when taking the picture in immigration - that is incorrect. And they told us American $$ can NOT be used in CUBA. So untrue. I bought things and tipped in dollars. The people were happy. Also the second day I didn’t take the people to people and got off the boat with hundreds of other people. No one checked. And the Cubans were so gracious in immigration and Customs. - The boat is old and needs renovation. There were several plumbing problems on my floor But the gym was fabulous. On the 11th floor - with a view. - all new equipment and a great staff! Great spa also. The entertainment was great ! I would like to go again on a similar cruise but would think twice about the way the Lido schedule is and the attitude of the management staff - not the workers. They are fine I also liked the excursions and the staff! But no music around the ship. Most ships have entertainment around the pool. There was no vacation mood around the ship! Also the room had no mini fridge. And no one told me until the last day that you can rent one! Bad marketing Read Less

It's been years since sailing with Holland America. We loved our suite. Service was very good. I was very disappointed with the food in the Main dining room and the Pinnacle Grill. The same food was served for dinner on the Lido deck as in the Main dining room which I didn't understand. Don't waste your money on the Pinnacle Grill. We ate there and I ordered the Alaskan King Crab legs, they were everything but Alaskan King crab, they were small, cut in half before being cooked and were more like the crab legs you'd get in a cheap Vegas buffet, with NO flavor. This cruise had an average age of 60 and you can tell it is definitely designed to attract an older crowd. Very few photographers and I wasn't impressed with the ones they had. They had no late night entertainment. I loved the decor of the ship and our newly remodeled Signature Suite. They were the best part of this cruise, other than our friends that were with us! This was our first Holland America cruise and we chose it mainly based on a good price for a longer itinerary on an almost new ship. We were fairly happy with the Koningsdam experience but noted that there were a lot of older cruisers. On the first leg of the 21 day Caribbean cruise, the average age seemed very high. On the second leg there seemed to be more younger passengers. Dining was very good with a varied menu in the main Dining Room, good quality in the Lido Market (for a buffet) and lots of specialty restaurants. We tried all of the restaurants and can heartily recommend the Dining Room, Pinnacle Grill, Grand Dutch Cafe and Culinary Arts Center. Caneletto was also good value for money but we did not feel that Taramind or Sel de Mer were worth the extra cost. In particular, we found the food (but not the service) in Set de Mer disappointing. The entertainment quality was somewhat spotty. There were some excellent acts but one performer, who it was claimed was loved by the British Royal Family, provided probably the worst show we have seen in 10+ cruises. Perhaps due to the older crowd or maybe to save money, there seemed to be fewer activities than on our past cruises. Several other passengers commented that things seemed to close down very early in the evening. The Koningsdam itself is a very attractive ship. The art does seem a bit low quality in some areas and the Promenade Deck is a bit crowded (few, if any places to sit) and entrances to the Theater on Deck 2 are narrow and can be crowded but in general, things are laid out well and passenger traffic seems to flow well in most areas. We would not hesitate to cruise on the Koningsdam again but would choose our favorite cruise line, Celebrity, if pricing was similar. Read Less

We went on a 10 day Southern Caribbean Cruise from Jan. 14-24 because it include the islands of Bonaire, Curacao and Aruba. Our first stop was to be Holland's island Half Moon Cay however with high winds the captain said it was not safe to go in on the tenders - what a bummer because that has always been one of our favorite stops. We then stopped at Grand Turk and we have been there many times and always enjoy the beach and time spent at Margaritaville - very fun. Next we stopped at Amber Cove and we enjoy that stop as they have a free water park, nice relaxed place. After a sea day we stopped at Bonaire and it is a smaller island more known for snorkeling and scuba which we did not do, however it was a nice stop. Then on to Curacao and Aruba and we really enjoy both of those stops - very colorful and friendly people. Now concerning our first cruise on the Koningsdam as opposed to seven other Holland cruises we have been on. The ship is very nice and similar to all the other Holland ships we've been on - same lay out etc. However we did find some difference we weren't extremely happy about - no tubs in the verandah rooms, but the shower was pretty big. The walking deck on deck 3 was smaller width wise which led Holland to do away with the deck chairs we have seen on other ships - which doesn't allow for people who want to just go set and rest or read on that deck during a cruise, and we realize it is a design thing. We also felt like the verandah cabin was maybe just a little smaller than other ship verandahs we have had. We did love the new World Stage on this ship and the special effects it had during performances. We also love the BB Kings Blues Club as they had performances almost every night. Again te service on Holland ships by the Indonesian crew is still top notch and we loved our dining room stewards. All in all we loved our trip and will continue to cruise with Holland in the future.
