Moderate to smaller ship and that was a positive. Rome as embark Location and itinerary were reasons for our selection and price seemed fair. Reputation of Holland America was good per friends but cruise turned out to be boring. AARP had written a favorable review about this particular cruise. Excursions were good, car rentals on two occasions went smoothly but onboard no beverages beyond tea and lemonade and water - so this got very old. Corking fee if you brought back wine or beer. No WiFi either. We ended up paying so we could post pics and updates with family. Ship was dated in its decor but very clean. Just wasn’t thrilled with anything onboard. Majority of cruisers were over fifty with little diversity. In the future I would seek more educational and hands on programs onboard. That came only on the excursions which are add ons and not Holland America run. Most had similar backgrounds and truthfully a more broad range of travelers would have made the cruise better. Maybe two children onboard. Will try another cruise line. Read Less

Holland America’s greatest flaw is not providing enough accurate information. This is not a new problem. We have observed this on all our HAL cruises. Celebrity does a much better job. There are so many ways that the information services could be improved. For example: •Put the port talks on the TV like you used to. We can’t always attend in person. •If you list port information on the TV, give real information and not just photos. And show all the ports, not just a few. •If an excursion is only for back-to-back cruisers, say so in the description. Don’t make me go to the desk and stand in line to find that out. •The maps in the brochure and the interactive maps didn’t always agree! Good grief. •There should be a way to hear the announcements in the room. It is very hard to hear them otherwise. We have to run to the door and open it when we think we hear an announcement, and we often miss it. Other cruise lines have a switch with an option to hear in the room or not. •There are others.... can’t list them all. The food on the ship was OK, but I only had one meal that I thought was excellent. On the positive side, the bed in our cabin was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in! The cabin attendants and waiters were superb. And I love the soap and shampoo with their nice fragrance and tingle. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we love to cruise to Greece and this cruise offered ports we have not visited. We have been on 40 cruises and do three a year. This ship was very boring because there was little entertainment. One night they showed "Jungle Book Movie" for the 8pm & 10pm shows come on. Lucky for us the movies in the staterooms where free. I have never spent so much time in my cabin. Very little music anywhere on the ship. The A/C in the cabin worked now and then. The toilet did not flush so we have to us public one. The shower falsest had to be replaced because only hot water came out. The refrigerator did not get cold just one thing after another. The best thing about the ship was the service. Dining in the main dining room was hit or miss but service was the best we'd had in years. Read Less

We wanted to see many of the main famous and historic Greece sights including Olympia, Corinth, Mycenae, Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Santorini (Thira). We had almost perfect weather (the one day of rain was At-Sea). The food, services, and activities on the ship were excellent for us (60 years olds). And we went to the Amalfi Coast in Italy on the way back which was spectacular. The excursions were very good, particularly Olympia, Mycenae, and Rhodes. We enjoyed our time on the ship and off the ship. Our hotel in Rome, before the cruise, was in a nice area and the hotel was very nice. We enjoyed seeing Rome sights for two days before the cruise, plus we had nice dinners outside those two nights. We had excellent weather in Rome too. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. Seeing Rome and Athens historic sights was a highlight. We would go back in a minute. Read Less

I embarked on Nieuw Amsterdam on Aug 4th and we set sail at 5pm. Embarkation was very well organised and there was little or no delay. Once on board the Lido was open for lunch. The food during the whole cruise was top class with plenty of choice and readily available. I sat for the early sitting in the Manhatten Dining Room and it was an enjoyable experience although travelling solo I had company at the table only on 3 evenings. Maybe the later sitting would have been better. The ports visited were delightful especially Toarmina, Montenegro, Dubrobnik and Venice. Once again I would give 10 out of 10 for the facilities of disembarking and embarking. I went on some tours. Being solo took some what away from the enjoyment of the tours. I had participated in the Roll Call in the months leading up to the cruise and had contact with 3 other cruisers,Annette, Jim and Juliewith whom I shared some of the tours. My cabin 8142 was very comfortable and I was well looked after by the 2 staff who prepared the cabin twice daily for my comfort. In general the staff were most friendly and their smile, willingness to help was much appreciated. The barbeques on deck were fantastic.I loved the freshly cooked omolettes at breakfast. I enjoye some of the stage shows although I expected better standard onmany nights Having to pay extra each day or 200 dollars for the 12 days to use the sauna and jacussie was a draw back to enjoyment on ship. Disembarking in Venice at the end of the cruise was very efficient. Overall it was for me a very good cruise. One highlight was leaving Montengro at evening it was so beautiful and the commentary on the entrance to Venice was also very well done. Being a solo traveller there was not much opportunity to get to know others as groups of people were ready made. Thanks to John and Caroline from Durham England and their friend from Newcastle the nights around the Cassino bar were full of good conversation. Well done Holland America and the Staff of Nieuw Amsterdam for your efforts that made the cruise most enjoyable.I think I will make sure I have a fellow travelleron my next cruise. Read Less

Holland American was truly more than a disappointment. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Service, activities, food, cabin, dining were below average standards. FYI-arrived to our "suite" with balcony and had little to no air conditioning for over 5 days-complained to our cabin person and was put off daily. Finally went to head of services on Main Deck and spoke to supervisor they will look into it. After many so called adjustments it did not get better. I was constantly told they checked the air flow and it seems OK-solution to them was to keep our drapes closed- after much time and aggravation they finally admitted there was a problem with the air conditioning belt-they send a bottle of wine for our inconvenience and we took it down to dinner and was told that there would be an $18.00 corking fee. Took wine back to Main Deck the super was not happy and assured us that he would have wine served that evening-dinner came and in the middle of dinner the staff could not find our bottle of wine, until the end of dinner-spoke to supervisor again and told the poor communications this ship the attitude of the staff was less than poor. The cabins were in disrepair, the cruise ran out of many of the food items after 5 days, the fruit was over rip and poor quality as was the vegetables and most of the meals were below any standard I ever had on any cruises. It seems this line was bought recently and Princess, and Carnival along with Holland American are all sister ships. The drinks, cokes, teas,, anything are NOT FREE anymore, in fact when purchased you are charged a 15% gratuity fee along with tax, that 15% gratuity is on all charges. On your bill you are charged a daily rate of $12.00 per day to go toward gratuity for help on the ship. This charge is not told to you ahead of time, but simply put on your bill. The atmosphere from other cruisers were much dissatisfaction -I found out about this $12.00 per day charge from past Holland American persons who have cruised this ship and would never return. I was told to go to the Main office and request removal of this charge, I did and they did it, regretfully. The staff, crew were generally unaware of where things were etc. Not a happy lot. The disrepairs in the cabins, and ship itself were unfortunate and not pretty. This is a tired cruise line that does not care about its clients. Would NEVER advise this line to anyone. Read Less

We (two couples) recently completed a 22 a day Mediterranean cruise on the Noordam, Holland America Line (HAL). All of the party have previously had cruises on other cruise lines and as HAL had been recommended for providing 5 star service we gave it a go. It is our opinion that HAL is very money orientated, e.g. charging a Hotel Service and also a 15% surcharge on services. The port transfers were very expensive. The air-conditioning in our cabin was very noisy and could not be controlled, even after asking for it to be looked at nothing was done, there was little if any information in our cabins regarding the use of the telephones, TV etc,. The entertainment in our view was very poor. On the plus side we did have excellent service from our dining room waiters and the food on most occasions was fine. The Noordam is an old and it shows. We have to say that given the opportunity to cruise with HAL or another cruise line we would choose another cruise line.   Read Less

We fly into Rome and spend 3 jam packed days walking and seeing and walking and seeing and etc, etc. We were tired and the eye balls hurt from looking. We stayed at a cute little hotel - Hotel Trevi- just around the corner from the fountain. It was a most convenient place to walk and see all the sights. The staff at the hotel were very nice and helpful. The hotel is small, but the people are big hearted. We could not believe what it cost to get a car to take us to the port - Civitavecchia. But we found everything in Rome expensive, but we still ate our share of the gelato (YUM). It was really good to board the ship and know that we were going to be well taken care of by the staff. The spa was a first stop for a massage. We took advantage of the wine tastings and really enjoyed and appreciated the Cellar Master Sam and all the trouble he had gone to get local wines for us to sample and enjoy. He was very friendly and that was great after some really stuffy ones we have run across on HAL. We were off every stop, but what was most annoying was that we had to tender at so many of the ports that were not scheduled for tenders. I felt like we were not wanted in some of the ports or HAL had not paid it's port TAX. We had a veranda cabin and very much enjoyed it. Our Cabin Stewards were quick and very capable of all their duties. Our Table steward Putu and the wine steward Anjin were the best we have ever had on a HAL trip.   Read Less

Embarkation: Fast and efficient. Cabin was ready and cases arrived quickly. Only downside, Boarding started at 12:00noon according to sign and we boarded about 12:45, went straight to MDR for Mariner Lunch but doors were closed. They served 12:00 - 1:00 pm!!Cabin: Standard balcony cabin on Rotterdam Deck. Cabin was clean and steward was efficient and attentive throughout the cruise.Dining: Despite comments that we had read about the quality of meals declining, we found quite the reverse and were very pleased with the quality of the food and the selections available. We had open seating and dined with different, interesting people every night. Ate once in Canelletto. Food was OK, nothing super. Would benefit from its own room, you still feel you are in the Lido. Pinnacle was very good and we enjoyed our meal there. Portions were large. Staff were attentive. We ate three times in the Tamarind. Ambiance was very good, view wonderful and we really enjoyed the food. Our wait staff were excellent and we selected them for every visit. It is a different atmosphere from the MDR and makes a very pleasant change. The steak was fantastic as were most of the dishes. We brought our own wine aboard including buying a local wine in each port we stopped at and we had great wines and not so great ones but it was fun trying them all.Entertainment: Highlight was the BB King Blues Band, they were great for listening and dancing to. We enjoyed Michael in the Piano Bar and the two ladies of Adagio. Not too keen on Richard in the Crows Nest. The Hal Cats were the best Hal Cats group I have heard on the three H-A cruises we have done. They played every style, rock, classical, showtunes, popular hits and I never found them loud, their singer was excellent. Commenting on entertainment is very subjective and while I felt the main stage performers were all very talented, singers and dancers I was less than enthralled with all but one of the "BroadwayShows" I felt the singers were "old time singers" and the shows were the type of show that was staged 30 years ago. The excessive use of technical effects could not liven them up with as stated the exception of one show. The guest entertainers were good but not very varied with an excess of stand-up comedy. Staff: Cruise Director JT was good but the DJ's appeared new to the job. On the whole, the staff throughout the boat were pleasant, friendly, helpful and always willing to assist in anyway they can. I have great respect for the H-A staff on board and the work they do. Ian was knowledgable about ports and future cruises.Excursions: We did not do any of the H-A Excursions as we found equivalent or better private tours for half the price of the H-A tours. The one we were going to do was cancelled due to lack of interest!Ship Activities: We attended some of the talks on port visits and took part in the Team Trivia but not much else. Being a port intensive cruise we were happy to sit with a book on our balcony when we had some free time.Disembarkation: Again handled efficiently. We had a late time so could enjoy a leisurely breakfast and did not have to rush to get off. When our time was calledwe were off and in the taxi line within 15 mins.Overall. A very good and interesting cruise on an excellent boat with the best of crews. I am sure we will travel with H-A again. Read Less
