Very Disappointed

Review for a Europe - Western Mediterranean Cruise on Eurodam

My concept of a Mediterranean cruise is Barcelona to Venice. We've sailed with Celebrity, Princess and Azamara and based on everything I knew I was fully expecting Holland America to meet or exceed our past experiences. It was not to be. The ports of call and HAL's shore excursions we all wonderful. But the ship design (pools and atrium), and more importantly the food and service fell very ...

Disappointment Over Lack of Quality Control in All Areas

I have been on HAL ships 4 or 5 times before including in family groups but have not sailed with HAL in3 or 4 years. Was surprised at the dramatic decline in quality control in all areas - late night snack buffet menu listing two items not actually available, 3 carvery items in dinner buffet repeated twice in a 1 week cruise, one random chair in dining room without arms when all neighbouring ...

No guest laundry

I was disappointed to find no guest laundry on the ship. Was on a 32 night cruise, and ships laundry costs very expensive for that amount of time. Loved our verandah suite stateroom. The staff mostly cheerful and attentive. The ships band was amazing. Singers and dancers pretty good as well. Some of the bought on entertainment Average, one of the comedians was embarrassing. HAL merchandise ...

This is an older ship and even though they did remodel , it still needs help ie attention to details. The staff made the boat. Almost all were wonderful . Great smile and attitude . The entertainment was marginal at best. Their shore excursions are pricey and uninspiring .The problem is with HAL . We booked a 22 day Mediterranean cruise only to find out when we boarded that we were on two 11 day ...

The iberian intrigue cruise was not as great as we hoped. The first day a passenger had a minor accident and the Captain turned around to Barcelona for eight hour delay. This was the jist of the trip constant delays . On the excursions as inconsiderate passengers failed to return to the buses. Again holding up departures. Highpoints were stops at Valencia and Cartegena where we could stroll to the ...

Not What I Expected

I will preface my comments by saying that I usually cruise on Celebrity having taken several transatlantic cruises on their ships. I have heard positive comments about Holland America so opted to try them this time. My number one, chief complaint was with the response I received from H-A home office to a request I made as to how rapidly I could disembark in order to catch a train leaving from ...

Everything started out great

Everything started out great. The cabin was very clean and the staff was helpful. All the ports were quiet which was a change from other cruises we have taken, just walk through the cities and enjoy them. The city markets were fun to see. Those were the good things. The over all quality of Holland America has declined over the past 20 years. They have done away with alot of passenger envolvment. ...

Pleasant Staff, Tired Ship

Review for a Europe - Eastern Mediterranean Cruise on Noordam

We are big fans of HAL and were very excited about our first European cruise with the line. First to get the negative out of the way: The staff was very pleasant but you could tell they were understaffed: long lines at the front desk, long hold times when calling guest services, sometimes not having the cabin cleaned until 4PM. Additionally, the ship was tired and worn- the toilet seat in our ...

Chose this cruise as am not a good sailor & ship docked every day! This meant only nights on board. I found the cabin with balcony to be a life saver!bused the balcony heaps - arriving & departing ports was great to watch. Best exp was sailing into Venice - what a sight viewed from up high on the deckE had 2 days of sailing & were disappointed that there was no on board entertainment. We ...

Far from Excellence

Review for a Europe - Western Mediterranean Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

Holland America Line (HAL) prides itself of being a "signature of excellence". That is far from being true in our experience. If I had to grade them, a "C" would be a fair grade. Certainly, you will find high quality food and an attractive international atmosphere, but there're aspects where HAL needs clear improvements, especially during Summer cruises. If you're travelling with children, ...
