Overall a very mediocre cruise - nothing special
Cruised with Holland America 10 years ago and it's not as good then.
The points: 1) We were also charged for Crew Appreciation even though our Have It All package booked through IGLU stated this was included. It was only removed after we queried this with Guest Relations, although we did tip the cabin staff personally.
2) During the cruise, ...
My mother and I selected this cruise date / itinerary 12 months before departure. It included Japan and Hong Kong which were key to our travel desires.
Let’s start with the challenges.
We booked a “Guaranteed Oceanview Room”. Mistake. Should have selected our room at reservation.
We were upgraded to a Verandah room directly under the pool deck. The deck scraping at odd hours was not ...
Westerdam is an old ship. It appears that the latest refresh was for the main areas as they were all very nice and clean. The cabin certainly could use a refresh. The bathtub is very shallow so there is no way an adult can take a bath in there.
The food was as expected although it appears that the meals in the main dining room have shrunk about 40%. There appears to be less waiters with ...
We have only cruised 3 times with HAL, however each was 14+ days. We were on the last Asia cruise before Covid, and the 1st one since Covid (ports in Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan). Both on Westerdam. However HAL is down trending for us.
Preface: Let me just say that running a cruise is a very difficult thing. Nearly every guest on board has a unique need or request. Staffing turn over ...
Holland America changed the itinerary several times and the final one was not at all interesting. The food was mostly mediocre and not up to the quality on Azamara, Princess, Cunard or Celebrity. I was looking forward to America's Test Kitchen, but, alas, it was not on board. There were no professional lectures and the man who did the Thailand history lesson was very poor. The tender ...
Our 16 night repositioning cruise to Singapore started at Sydney airport where we were transported to the ship by our pre-booked transfer. Boarding was quick and efficient. The VeriFly app which we had been encouraged to use was a bit of a waste of time and not taken seriously by the check-in personnel.
The Westerdam is tastefully decorated with almost no signs of wear and tear. A big bonus ...
I choose this 15 day cruise to get away from my regular daily life and it was great for that. 6 days at sea, including 5-6m waves for a couple days. The food ands staff was great as I remember it from my other HAL cruises.
But the Westerdam state of repair is sad. So many little things broken. Lights in public bathroom about to fall out, fan in elevator running at full speed as it is burning up ...
We chose this cruise for the itinerary. Never cruised with Holland And America before heard good reports. Ship size is good do not like really big ships. Cabin smaller than I’d expected. Dinning good had one very slow night put a comment card in stating this and was always better after that.
We found there are a lot of rooms and she’s on this ship not always being used to full potential. ...
I booked this cruise mainly due to the itinerary it offered to East Asia, the brand of Holland America was the second reason. The Westerdam is a nice, clean and comfortable cruise ship and offered all the amenities that cruise lines offer.
I enjoyed the itinerary and all the ports visited.
However, my experience of the Westerdam was a little disappointing and although the staff were polite ...
We joined the Westerdam in Shanghai having spent a great week discovering the exciting city of Shanghai. This was my third HAL cruise so my expectations were high. Unfortunately it was very disappointing overall. As a plus Embarkation and disembarkation had improved from previous trips. Cabin was standard and clean. Meals were very ordinary and on multiple occasions came to the table cold. Many ...
