I have been on many cruises and the Holland America Line has to be the worst cruise I have been on. The activities during the day consisted of seminars Sail away party consisted of nothing on deck, no live performance - just music and the ship selling their drinks as much as they can. No Games No Karoke Comedian - Terrible Illusiionist - Was Good Dancing Show in Theatre - Awful Centre Stage - Violinist - I find this boring - was not interested though there were many elderly people that were Piano Bar - Ok BB Kings - was by far the best entertainment on the ship. But How much can you listen to blues songs everynight. Rated my worst cruise ever. Ports - Destination Alaska 7 nights - Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay all beautiful areas. Ship itself, clean and tidy Cabin steward - very nice Dining - Average variety of food - nothing special Read Less

I travel extensively and this was the most expensive and one of the worst trips I’ve ever taken. We upgraded to a suite and executive lounge. The lounge service was good but the food stale, pedestrian and you had to pay for liquor. Dining Room and Lido deck food lacked quality, taste and freshness. We ate burgers and hotdogs because they cooked to order. The only free beverage was lemonade and tea. A coke was $2.50, latte $3.50 + tax, tip. We brought 2 bottles of wine and they charge $18 corkage fee at the restaurant! After spending $7000 (2 people) for this 7 day trip Holland America Eurodam continued to have unexpected costs. The better restaurants cost more to get in and if your wanted a good steak there was an up-charge! The excursions on average cost $150 a person. $30 per person to play Bingo. I’ve been to many around the world the cost for what you did was exorbitant. Also frustrating was the daily schedule was placed in your room the night before. They constantly changed the restaurant open and closed times. We missed breakfast because they close at 8:30am. This was confusing for many people. The most frustrating was the big day to see the Glaciers. They limited the amount of chairs on the top deck, did not offer to set out more and left many of us standing for hours or had to sit inside and only have partial views. The Ranger talk was at 7:30am. We missed it. The day was so unproductive and unorganized because we did not have a central place for the family to enjoy this spectacular event. I was beyond disappointed! I would not recommend this for big family groups or handicapped person. It was difficult to keep organized, most tables only had 2-4 tops that you can’t move. Limited seats for the classical music nights, shows were set at 7:30 or 9:30 which were on top of dinner timelines. Not much activity during the day unless you want spa and workout time. Overall, not worth the money and I would highly recommend NOT using Holland America Eurodam to see Alaska. Read Less

My husband and I are semi retired and enjoy traveling. This cruise was advertised with a local tour group and Alaska had always been on our list for travel. We booked the Veranda for the balcony. This was an older ship. The cabins were not very clean. I had spilled some ice on the carpet and in retrieving it, brought up a glob of someone else's hair! The dinners were just ok. We spent an hour and a half waiting on courses to be served, and the coffee came 10 minutes after our dessert. We paid to eat in another dining room. Having been on other cruises that offered beautiful food sculptures and chocolate fountains this was a "nothing special cruise". The entertainment was trivia in the bar, or two guys singing at a piano. We could have gone to the digital workshop?#* What! I'm on vacation. I went to the spa/salon to have my hair done for a gala evening. I don't think these people ever worked in a real salon. They washed my hair, blow dried it and tried to sell me products. The positives of this trip were the staff, Alaska and the shore excursions. We went fishing and were fortunate to catch some and have it sent home. We also went to the dog mushing camp. If you like dogs, this is it! In spite of the bad, we did enjoy ourselves and made the best of it. My husband and I are not rich, and felt that we had "splurged" going on this trip. Read Less

We were part of an 18 member family party on a cruise from Vancouver BC to Anchorage AK. The staff were generally helpful, the facilities fine, the Alaskan scenery amazing, the food ok, yet my experience was largely negative. We brought our three small children with us. Mistake. The marketing literature implied “child friendly” but that is misleading. The kids center “Club Hal” was fun for older kids (mostly they watched movies) though occasionally with limited hours, but unfortunately not available to toddlers. But THERE WAS NO SAFE PLACE ON THE SHIP FOR OUR TODDLER. Lots of ways he could get hurt. For example, on Glacier Bay day we rented a cabana and we were on high alert (hard to enjoy) because he could easily slip thru the bars and fall 11 stories to certain DEATH. Deck 2 was the floor with the entertainment on it, and it included a Casino with sounds and lights which seem designed to attract toddlers. CASINO STAFF (manager Tom) WERE MILITANT ABOUT NO KIDS. So I spent endless hours in the evenings going up and down the stairs and elevator, trying to keep our toddler entertained, safe, and out of the casino. BEING TRAPPED ON THE WESTERDAM WITH A TODDLER WAS A FRUSTRATING, STRESSFUL, and EXHAUSTING EXPERIENCE. Never again. For the most part, with the exception of the casino staff, the WESTERDAM staff were empathetic and helpful to our situation, but still a horrible way to spend a vacation. In retrospect we should have just told the family we were not going with them. Read Less

The stateroom was perfect aside from the air not working. It was clean and roomy for the two of us. We had great shows to watch and cozy veranda. There was plenty of storage room, and we even had numerous USB ports. Standard plugin was limited, but we were prepared for that. There was no outlet near the bed. My husband has a cpap and they brought a power trip to help it reach. Our air didn’t work the entire trip so thank goodness we had the veranda to leave open all day. They called everyday to check on it but didn’t do anything about it. Dining room Awful experience. The back of the ship was so loud and shaking you had to talk quite loudly to have a conversation. Therefore, everyone around you talked loudly as well. We ordered the Spinach and artichoke dip with bread which came with two breadsticks from Nutella. While we were eating, the captain came on to talk about the evening festivities, weather, location and more. We could not make out but a couple words that he said something about Glacier Bay and the spa. You can never hear any of the announcements because they only are in the hallways and stairwells. My husband ordered a New York strip steak medium and I ordered one done. Besides the fact that there were flank steak and not NY strip wasn’t the worst part. I received his steak and he received mine. The asparagus and carrots were saturated in butter. The pecan pie was stale and about two bites worth of pie. The NY cheesecake was not your typical cheesecake. It had more of a cake texture than a cream cheese texture. There is only food available during certain times so it throws off the eastern time zone people. Then when it’s time to eat, there are 1000 people in line waiting for two people to serve you food. The food is not buffet style or self serve. If you want a piece of pizza, it can be an hour wait. There are 30 people selling beer and two people serving food and clearing tables. You have to clear off your own table because there aren’t enough outside. If you want a waffle for breakfast, it can be up to a 7 minute wait. The food isn’t even all that tasty. Most of the choices are the same every day. The ranch for salads is watered down, scrambled eggs are runny and bacon is transparent. The chicken Caesar salad was divine. The omlet station was really good too but there again one person making omelets for 40 people. I’m sure like every other cruise line it’s all about tourism. I paid $4000 to see Alaska. Not buy $3000 jewelry made in China worth $10. I want genuine jewels and custom made things. I want to support Alaska while supporting Holland America. The only activities on the ship were targeted towards women. Jason paid $120 to just play Texas holdem for a bit. We did not know that it was a Chuck Swindoll cruise - that would have been nice to know because most of the rooms and events were for those people. They took the main stage most days so the shows weren’t till 8 and 10:00 at night. That’s 2:00 in the morning for Easterners. I spoke with an employee who said they had most of the ship most of the day. Our travel agent was incredible and really help tailor our trip ideas to our desires. When we went to the excursion desk, she told us that our travel agent booked us for all the old people tours and obviously didn’t know what she was talking about because there was no way we could get a cap for $70 an hour in Juneau. When we arrived in Juneau the taxis said right on the doors, $70 an hour! Felt like we were lied to from most of the cruise line employees. Alaska was breathtaking and so glad we went to Sitka. I had no idea Juneau was as commercialized as it was. I wouldn’t ever have to go back there. It was totally not what we were expecting. Even our family members who go on cruises to and three times a year it said it was unlike anything they had ever experienced I would not be traveling Holland America again. Read Less

My husband and I did the Double Denali with 7 day cruise down the inner passage. What a mistake that was!! I had one day on-board the Noordam before I got ill. One day to enjoy the ship - that's all. I had one day before I fell dreadfully ill with a virulent flu virus which I contracted while staying in the Holland America chalet in Denali a few days before (together with up to 90% of other people on the same holiday, according to what the medical staff on board told us). I was told by their medical staff that it takes up to 4 days to show after infection so that takes it firmly into the Denali stay period. It was also a ‘seasonal identified influenza virus’..Presumably a local virus? We certainly never heard a holiday maker on our bus/train etc coughing - not until we got on the Noordam. Certainly by the end of the cruise people were coughing all over the ship. My temperature reached 104 degrees and I was 'isolated' and 'sanitized' in my room for 3 days. This was done in the most insensitive and unkind way - making me sit there in the room feeling like a leper. I sat crying while staff in gloves and masks swilled the room over with cheap smelly disinfectant (which, by the way, aggravated my throat and cough). I was too ill to do anything about it except get very upset and later to get very very angry. We were told to use the room service. Most of the food offered in the room service booklet was inedible to me as I was feeling so ill. My husband spent 3 days going up and down the ship getting me glasses of water and bits of food I could eat (cold by the time he got it to me). Ringing room service was very difficult as the phones are so weak that it was difficult to hear anyone on the other end and always so busy, and the people answering them often had poor English. Room service always said there would be at least a 45 min wait for anything. At no point were we offered or told about anything that might be available to us to help us. My husband couldn't even get a jug for water - he was only allowed to bring water by the plastic glass. There weren't even any trays to carry things on. We have never done a cruise before so all this was new to us and we didn’t know how to cope with it. We didn't get our down-turn service or any other niceties. We missed the ships activities, nice dinners, and worst of all our bucket list excursions which we had planned and paid for months in advance. We didn't even get any reassurance we would get our money back from them until much later. We felt largely abandoned and sacrificed so that their epidemic wouldn’t spread -which was ironic really since the whole ship sounded like it had the same cough by the end of the trip. When I was eventually allowed out of my cabin after 3 days I was very angry indeed and I spoke to one of the managers in customer services but he was cold, distant and indifferent. He had no empathy what so ever and said in the end that - quote 'if he compensated me he'd have to compensate all the others and he wasn't going to do that'. He even inferred that it was my own fault for not knowing how to use room service more and asking for what I wanted. He seemed to want to blame me and any other staff - he had no empathy or conception that I had been deliriously ill with fever and was still very ill and that we had never been on a cruise before and didn't know the ropes. I even ended up with a medical bill of $348! The rest of the cruise was dreary because I had such a sore throat I couldn't speak, I lost my voice, and I was weak and unable to do much. I had no appetite. I still don’t feel completely well even now. In short, the cruise experience that my husband and I had with Holland America was absolutely abysmal and it has put us off ever going on a cruise again. Not only were we treated pretty dreadfully, we never got the experience we were promised and we had a holiday from hell, with no recompense or care or compassion. I have emailed them about this many times since we got home and they have totally ignored me – except to send adverts for cruise holidays!!! How insensitive and inappropriate is that? As a good tip I would say that when you are looking for a cruise it would be wise to first find out how the company will treat you if you get ill while you are with them. I got my flu virus while in the care of HAL, - I was infected while staying in their accommodation - but this is what happened to me and my husband. I wish I had looked into it more myself. I cannot review most of what the ship had to offer because I wasn't well enough to explore it properly. My husband and I did feel that the food was of very poor quality though. Our balcony floor had a huge mound of rotting metal in it. Our cabin was very comfortable - but it didnt make up for all the awful stuff!! There were many others ill like me on this cruise, and I read in a previous review in March this year that a flu epidemic swept the ship then. Maybe the air con is suspect? I hope my experience helps people make their minds up about whether to do this cruise or not. We regret doing it very much. Read Less

We wanted to see Alaska and Glacier Bey, So HA cruise line was one of the lines that goes there and we where advised by our travel agent as well. Ship had good rooms and great stuff. Everything else didn't meet our expectations. Of 7 days there where just 5 days of shows on mane stage and most of them where low class performances (other two days they showed a movie). On other stages performances where the same each nice so after first day nothing new. They had just two ping pong tables that where very popular because there wasn't anything else to do. Pool aerie was closed way to early at 9pm and we literally where kick out when we where there at 9pm. Just two activities where organized just last day in a ship but very poor and short (ping pong tournament and song trivia). Buffet food was okay but dining room food was almost as buffet food, not so much special taste food. We knew that HA cruise to Alaska will be quieter experience but it was just bad organized and low quality with a little that they had. And at each corner they tried to sell us something, like creams at spa, good feet at gym, bear at buffet, meal to buy at dinning and so on. We for sure will try another cruise lines but wont suggest anyone HA line. Also we spoke with other travelers that used that line before and they tolled that this year they really very poor organized compare to before. Also we heard from our travel agent that other people where complaining withe their line too. Read Less

Waited over 3 hours to get on ship because of US customs. Waited 45 mins to get off ship at first port of call and everyone was late for their trips. Queued to get back on ship. This was our first cruise and probably our last. Trip to travel on river from Haines was rubbish , mainly because tide was out!!! The trip said , River teaming with salmon so we could see bears, eagles wolves etc , can salmon swim up mud.. no they cannot, so no salmon, no other wildlife. We went on two other trips neither of which was memorable. The balcony cabin we had was great, staff were great. The entertainment was not to our taste but we did enjoy the jazz group, staff again were great. It was dufficult to find a seat for breakfast on several, occasions, very pushy to buy a la carte extras in the Fine Dining section and lastly DO NOT PURCHASE SOPHIE FfIORE jewellery on board. I did complain but my emails did not get a reply for 5 weeks, that was bad..... Sophie Fiori however, was a joke, purchased something in the sale , had it valued when I got back and it was not worth half what I paid. It is buy and no return so be careful. Read Less

We selected the Seattle to Alaska cruise for a special birthday. Four of us traveled together -- my husband and I and my parents. Holland America was not the cheapest, but had reasonably good reviews and a great route -- Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, Victoria. We arrived late in the boarding window, so embarkation was easy. But, that's where the positive part of the experience ended. Our room was a nightmare. Although we paid a substantial amount to upgrade our room (to veranda, high floor, quiet location), our room was directly below the buffet. We had a ridiculous and stressful amount of noise -- pounding, rolling carts, etc -- from 6 am to midnight. We were finally moved after FOUR nights into a beautiful suite room but the thermostat was broken and we had cold air blowing on the bed for two nights. My parents' room was adjacent to another room where they were doing construction. The buffet food was mediocre. The dining room food was worse -- so bad that we stopped eating in there after two nights. We purchased one excursion but it was incredibly overpriced for the experience. We worked with the guest services staff during and after our stay. They were impatient, rude (and maybe overwhelmed since there seemed to be many unhappy customers on board) and clearly not interested in working to make us want to ever try Holland America again. For 6 really bad nights in our room, we received a $300 credit, and nothing more. My parents also received a credit but should have been offered a new cruise. We don't recommend Holland America and will not sail with any ship under the Carnival Cruise Lines umbrella. Read Less

we choose this cruse as an upgrade to the other lines available. paid more but got way less than expected. the rooms were much smaller than described the full size tub was anything but and the ADA equipment that I requested and was assured would be available, wasn't. of course we were not informed of this till we were outside the 12 mile boundary of the USA. the air conditioning system never worked the entire trip and they continued to do dry dock repairs while at sea. the anytime dinning for the few times we tried it was always substandard while if you were willing to pay the upcharge the food was excellent. the all inclusive drink package had limits not divulged prior to purchase. during repairs of the interior pool the passengers were exposed to toxic paint of some type which my wife has final recovered from but with my COPD I have not and the Captain, to this date refuses to describe what the exposure was. the crew / service personnel were great, the views were great, and we did not have a tour that was not outstanding the biggest issue is that with the line flying a non US flag you as an individual have no recourse against them and they can deny all written comments sent while at sea and ignore you arrive back in the US Read Less

My Mother bought us a family cruise for all of us for our Birthdays. We were very excited. The whole trip was a disaster on the Ansterdam. 1st day they gave my brother’s in laws a 2 bed bedroom and my other brother and his daughter a one bed bedroom. They would of switched rooms but my brother’s room had no hot water the whole 7 days of the trip. They wouldn’t switch the room for him or the in laws. So he and my niece had too shower in my Moms room and they would only give her a $200 credit. The toilets did work for a couple of hours 3 times and we didn’t have water from 12 midnight till 5 am and it still didn’t really fix the problem. The DVD player in my room didn’t work, TV was fuzzy the safe locked me out. The movie they played in the so called movie theater was the same movies they played on the 2 TV movie channels. Their nature experts couldn’t answer simple question like does Alaska have Racoons. She said they didn’t but we asked a excursion guide and he said of course we do. The food was not soso the service was poor. I could go on and on. My brother summed it up the cruise was a floating Motel 6 with Denny’s food. Alaska was beautiful! It was just a awful ship. Dear all My room no. Is 8012 in ms nieuw amsterdam. 23rd June departure from vancouver There are several issues. Let me point out each one 1. I am pure Hindu vegetarian traveller. Before booking I had clearly asked that I need Indian vegetarian meal. I was clearly told yes Holland America is best vegetarian friendly. On coming the same turned to worst nightmare On first day of lunch it was told that there were less supply as new supply is being refilled and from tommorow you will get variety of food. Told ok no problem. Let's manage a day while all other had there full option to eat. From 2nd day the same is situation till day 6.either something is over or we will do tommorow but there is no tommorow than. Had Worst experience where I had taken a naan and just yogurt to each and tried to break naam with hand and in couldn't and than with teeth than too it was unbreakable. Given it to chef MR mani who told me this is hard one requested by guest but no guest request a UNBREAKABLE NAAN as it is to eat and not a sovenier at the room I was told daily to contact Mr mani and he will make seperate but my simple question is why we are not provided quality food and substandard is done between guest who complains and some they are normal and no complain gets the unbreakable naan. Matter reported to charnea guest manager at lido market. Most Indian on cruise if asked are satisfied than you can see the reply 15 are there in my group. The best person who eats in to most item in our group it wss also now fed up. There are no variety. I had complained on day 3rd breakfast where I had waited 1 hrs for a menu item before the steward came to me and told item is wrongly written and had complained to Denise who was manager for in room dining and she called chef Mr siva Kumar who says he is only one Indian chef and have 120 people to handle alone. There is no fault of him seems and so called Denise in front of Mr siva Kumar and told her what Mr siva said as this is fault of Holland America side that enough staff was not provided though clear booking was done with passport details nationality and even telling our food preference to booking agent. Even in Indian item. Name tags are not being put and the same counter is mixed with non vegetarian. 2nd greenhouse spa Offered hydro pool and thermal suite package at 219 per couple and was booked by me immediately on the day of embarkation and was told only last 4 space left 35 couple. 70 person is the max allowed. All good for 2 days and than came the day of skagway where board was kept for the same thing of 130 dollars which was only for skagway joining passengers but to my surprise they took booking from all the guests who boarded from Vancouver too and with bargained price of 90-100 dollars for couple. Right now there are much more than 70 persons and had told first day that I would only do it if the max cap of 70 is maintained. It is like public pool now and also with this bargain thing totally dissatisfied with working and demand a strong refund for the same. Also all general public is entering the hydro pool as the door is not kept closed 3rd room shower had fallen when it was turned on leg on first day of cruise which can't be allowed as it was not checked 4th room ac not working properly complained on first day is not resolved till date. 5th highly overcharged from exc tours. Don't buy they don't care for us Team to my surprise I found that white pass railway done by me through exc tours is also price higher than the price given on its official website Matter report to Mr lyron who was not ready to agree the fact first that it's overpriced. After giving him proof he have taken time and than comes with terms and conditions no where published. Mr lyron says this offer is only for online purchase and sent letter of terms which wasn't available online. no where that terms are published online Also if its for online only it should have been clearly written on main page This is program with Holland America that you try to earn 10 dollars more for anything and everything after normal profit and than just tell to read terms where nothing was told to us like this. Check in: My mom has special needs. She’s is loosing her sight for many eyears. They separated us on the check in (I felt as cattle). We lost the welcome picture. Also they denied to carrie my laundry clothes. After theree long lines. They arrived all rugged on the ship. Cassino; Texas Holden; 15% of rate every hand; and the price isn’t the problem here; but it’s good have a sensation that you can win. I won the money from every person seated on the table. We did the math; I won 40% of the money of everyone’s buy in, the cassino took 60%. The time to cash out. My money wasn’t there. The celebration moment was gone. The cassino manager was tired, and said that I lost my money. No fun. First stop in Juneau Alaska. My mom, three of her friends and my self bought 5 tickets to see the whales and glaciers for 1:30pm. The ship arrived 1:00 pm at the port, but there was a huge line to leave the ship. HUGE. 15% of the people who pay $200 for the excursion lost it. I was one of them. The laid from the excursion said that she couldn’t know if my mom was with the excursion or not. But she was just lianing. She actually was with her ticket in her hands. I lost my mom again, and my mind. This time I was so frustrated. I love whales since I was very young. I was so excited about this experience. They ruined for me and 7 people of 50. I cursed them. I came back to the ship without showing my key. I left the ship without showing my key. They call the cops and put me out of the ship. This was a security problem to them, I couldn’t think about. I assume my responsibility here. It seems that I cannot lose my mom. The capitan did not take the time to listen my version. The officers, I cannot complain, they were gentlemen, and treat me with a lot of respect; a proud to apply to American citizenship those guys gave to me. I lost the rest of the trip like my mom did. I’m paying $700 to come back to Denver plus one night of hotel in Juneau. My mom just stay on the ship because would costed some thousand dollars to go to Seattle, and Brazil on rush, losing her already bought ticked. I cannot say that I will come back to any cruise again. Ler make justice with Diana from guest service, Deden my room service, and Gabriel who took care of our food, and dutch woman from the excursion, I forgot her name though. . This cruise was supposed to be highly rated but it turned into a nightmare. Some of the extremely wrong encounters are as follow. If I have to list all that were wrong and unsatisfactory I will end up writing a few chapters. - the ship is very old and has an stale odour from time to time - bathroom fixtures are mounted lopsided besides visibly unclean and unhygienic - mini fridge door was not closed properly and we had to fix theproblem ourselves - vanity fixtures are stained and dirty looking - beddings had large patches of yellow stains - female staff in officer uniform was hostile towards the crew and passengers during the life boat drill - most of the staff incapable of giving accurate information - some of the staff incapable of communicating in basic English - probably the first "reputable" cruise line that served expired food items to passengers and insisted on payments - placement of staff at the serving stations on Lido Deck was extremely inappropriate as a few of them had no cooking experience - rotten vegetables served to passengers - being told only one side plate of food allowed because they were standing together as a couple - most of the menu items in the Dinning Room came in small decorative portions except on the very last night of the cruise - cloth napkins have dangling loose threads everywhere - so-called "midnight buffet" end at 23:30 - some salon/spa staff did not provide all the services as printed but still charged us full price for it - it was absolutely innappropriate for spa staff to give specific medical advice under false pretense and intentionally misinterpreted findings - there was no embarkation assistance to mobility challenged passengers - disembarkation forms and instructions were all so different from what were supposed to be - many touch screen casino slot machines had irresponsive key pads - etc. Read Less

I have always cruised on Holland America. This would have been my 4th Holland America cruise & second Alaska cruise. On the first night we went to the Lido Dinner Buffett. The line server said only 1 side item per plate. They gave us only 1 baked potato per plate. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as that the baked potato was rotten. A person at our table ordered and paid for a can of coke. After he drank the can of soda he looked at the bottom of the can and saw it was expired. The pasta station was awful. The station attendant joked that he had just been promoted from the ice cream station to the pasta station a month earlier. He had yet to have any training on how to make pasta. It showed. Chef Boy A R dee would have been better. The silverware was quite tarnished. The settings needed to be replaced. The balance of the cruise we ate in the main Dining room. I was going to forgive all that except for the future cruise deposit. I have always done a future cruise deposit while onboard to get the perks. I went to the future cruise desk on the last afternoon. It was closed. Usually they have a display or stack of blank future deposit forms on the desk. I saw the box where you can deposit the completed forms into but no blank forms. I then went to the customer desk and asked for a blank form. They said there was none. I tried in good faith to give them money but to no avail. When I got back home I asked my cruise agent to contact Holland America to see if I could do a deposit now. They said "No". They insisted that the blank forms were available on the future cruise desk. Read Less

I had high hopes, after cruising on the Holland America "Amsterdam" for a 2-week cruise to Alaska on June 19th thru July 3rd this year. THAT cruise was absolutely wonderful!!! Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that Holland America is very consistent. Previously, I was on the 33-Day cruise in March this year, on the ms Maasdam. And, while there were many issues (it is a VERY old ship), I was very impressed with how the captain handled the huge amounts of complaints. It really felt like he cared about what we complained about. He responded quickly and appropriately to everything. I was so impressed, despite the many issues (poor vent/AC system, horrific tendering, etc...) because while there may have been problems, they were addressed, the captain apologized, AND he took action to try to keep us all happy, for a very extended amount of time. It convinced me to cruise on Holland. And, I did - on the Amsterdam to Alaska for two-weeks. It was absolutely wonderful. But, this last cruise, just makes me shy away from cruising on Holland again. I didn't bother to complain while on this ship, after my initial letter to them, on the first day, to let them know how unhappy I was. It was clear to me, that Holland's ms Eurodam couldn't and wouldn't live up to the great Amsterdam experience. First of all, windows were regularly blocked with closed curtains. Does the ship NOT understand that the view is the MOST important aspect of an Alaska cruise? I had mentioned it several times, to employees/staff, but they never did anything about it. I would get smart alick answers like "the weather is bad". Second, in the diningroom I felt that every table was pushed together closer than ever and each one was set with two extra place settings - enough to cause a full table to feel knees and elbows and having the inability to pull out a chair without hitting a person next to you. It was near impossible to walk freely. Conversations were impossible as well, as the diningroom was so crowded, you couldn't hear a person sitting next to you! I was constantly struggling to hear anything being said. Also, the staff were so extremely busy, with what appeared to us all, was extra duties, while trying to perform diningroom duties, that they didn't have time to ask us if we wanted anything, if our meal was satisfactory, or if we would like tea or coffee with our dessert. Orders were taken quickly, food was thrown at us, like being on an assembly line and I was even told repeatedly, that I could NOT have a tea pot, when I asked for tea. I actually had to argue with diningroom staff, to let them know that I CAN have a pot for hot water and I do NOT have to settle for a cup of hot water. It was impossible to get Earl Gray tea or Jasmine tea. I would get it from the Lido/buffet line and bring it to dinner with me. The first three days I couldn't even get any lemons for my water. One table even commented to me on the last night for dinner that it seemed like a real struggle when I was trying to ask for a tea pot for hot water. The waiter had tried insisting that we ONLY get those for "room service". I had to inform him that I have been cruising for the last couple years, just about once per month and this was the ONLY ship that refused to give me hot water in a pot. He then caved in and got me one. (Why did it take such an ordeal?) One of the best features of a Holland America cruise (for me) is the Tea Time. But, on this ship, it was also part of the assembly-line service. Instead of having a pleasant dining experience, being seated formally and treated with respect, we had to find a seat, at least a half an hour PRIOR to tea time and there was NO choice in the tea we were poured. The tiny bar tables were pre-set with small plates and tea cups that fit only 3 settings, but had four chairs. Needless to say, it was a very uncomfortable experience. I have no idea how the service was for anyone on the 1st tea day, because I was out of luck as to how to get a seat. The other two times that I managed to get a seat, it was rushed, hard to get re-fills of tea, and almost impossible to get a finger sandwich or sweet treat. Staff members were doing the best that they could, but also under staffed and not friendly or concerned with attention to our needs. It felt as though it was part of their forced routine that they were anxious to get over with. On the UP side, I absolutely LOVED my Ocean View!!! And, the band was outstanding. The comedian was great. The string quartet was remarkable. And, as always Metka was a pleasure to bump into and she remembered me from our first cruise in March. Room service was okay, except they found the need to repeatedly call to ask if I had everything (until asked them to STOP calling me, and let me enjoy my food.) And, as always, the room attendants were the best service of any service on the ship. I do not believe I will ever cruise on Holland America again, unless it is a deal that I cannot refuse. Read Less

My wife and I traveled with her parents. We had a cabin on Deck 7, with a nice balcony. Check in was a 3.5 hour disaster, being told first to go to one place and then told that we had to go to another place...5 different times. And we waited and were herded like sheep from one large holding room to another. No one seemed to know what to do and of course, no water, no one to answer question, just "go there, sit there, stand and wait there" for 3.5 hours. After boarding we arrived at our cabin which was really small considering it was supposed to be larger and with a balcony. It was reasonably clean, except for the carpet, the HVAC vents (which had hair and dust hanging from the vent and which was never cleaned during the cruise). The crew are constantly smiling and saying good morning, etc. but when you see them not interacting with a passenger they look pretty miserable and are fairly lazy. I sent my shoes out for polishing twice and they were wiped off, but not polished. We used the lotion provided which was never replenished. Daily cleaning consisted of making the bed, replacing towels and wiping off the sink (missing hair a few times), making the bed and emptying the wastebasket. One of the things that really bugged us was the waste of paper. They constantly deluge you with notices in your mail box advertising sales of jewelry, art work, excursions, future cruises, etc. etc. to the extent that we were getting 6-10 extrinsic pieces of paper per day. And of course, when you check in online you are told to print your check in documents (multiple pages) which you are told on the dock were not necessary. The food in the Lido lounge was not good and one day I actually got food poisoning from a bad salmon omelette. Often in the main dining room when choices were made (i.e. items to include in a make your own omelette) there were items missing. Getting a second cup of coffee required a special request. The food was acceptable but clearly mostly made well in advance and calculated to look much more special than it tasted. And the money grubbing that HAL does is truly offensive. At EVERY meal you are asked if you want a special extra charge coffee or other beverage. When you ask for advice on wine, you are ALWAYS pointed to the most expensive choice and it is clear the wine steward has little to no knowledge about wines. Upsell, upsell, upsell happens a dozen times a day and gets really tiring. I lost track of how many times I was solicited to buy their drink package at $55 per person per day for up to 15 drinks a day that cost up to $9 each (which is about 2/3 of their drinks). We bought a wine package and again were pushed to upgrade to a higher level. When we ordered wine off our package we were told the most expensive bottle was clearly the best. Then there are the photographers, taking pictures and trying to sell them to you, the art gallery, the jewelry "sales", the shoe orthotics, the spa treatments, massages, facials and face lift packages, the "private" cabanas, the soda that you are charged for, it simply never ends. Even the tour and "gift" and jewelry shops closest to the ship in every port are owned by HAL, or so we were told by one of the merchants. What was good? Our room was reasonably quiet except for the racket made by the crew early each morning as they went up and down the hallway with their cleaning carts and equipment. The balcony was sufficiently large and pleasant. The scenery was beautiful. The crew were usually cheerful and always said they would do or bring you what you asked for (although it often didn't happen). The elevators were fast and efficient. We arrived on time although we never departed at the scheduled time. The Captain declined to tell us of "gale force winds" and "20 foot swells and waves" until everyone was back on board and the ship had departed, thereby denying a timid sailor the chance to avoid seasickness (we are not in that category, fortunately). We had a lengthy conversation with one of the officers in the Silk Road bar (which is beautifully decorated) but we noticed he appeared very unhappy and seemed to drink to excess (fortunately he was not the Captain or an officer charged with navigation). The entertainment was mediocre and the crew show was pathetic. Also the crew said they didn't get off work until after midnight and then had to rehearse on their own time until 4:30 am. Our impression is that the crew of mostly Indonesians were not very well paid and were worked extremely hard. We were told they do not have a day off during their entire 10 month contract. And finally, we discovered that we grossly overpaid for our cabin. We found other people who had paid less than 1/3 what we paid and who had better cabins, included drink packages, etc. This clearly is our own fault, and I would not even mention it but for the other shortcomings by HAL. Tipping is automatically added to the bill ($27 per day per cabin) and is divided supposedly among the crew. I prefer to tip directly and did so, while I still paid the $27 per day. All in all, we aren't likely to sail on HAL again. Read Less

I chose this ship as I had heard good reviews and as it was a "holiday of a lifetime" we thought we would pay a bit more. It turned out to be the worst experience of a holiday we had ever had. There was nobody at the airport to meet us in Canada after a nine hour flight which was in itself very stressful. There was no help or guidance as to where to go with any of the organised excursions which I had booked online through Holland and America with us being put on the wrong bus at one time which the tour guide found funny!. One of the excursions was changed without our consent which would have meant us missing the next one so we went and changed it back and noticed a $10 fee each for it being charged on our statement so we had to go and get it refunded, for which we were made to feel an inconvenience and the staff were very rude. We were treated worse than cattle when queuing to get on board which took us over 5 hours with no seats for disabled people and one person passed out in the queue which was very distressful. A lot of the entertainment on board involved an extra fee and there was not much choice of entertainment even the films shown in the cinema were available to watch on TV in your room. Staff were unhelpful and if anything ran out they were not willing to go and get more until the next day. It is the only cruise where food was not available most of the time when we asked if there was anything to eat we were told there were burgers and hotdogs in the lido but as a vegetarian that did not offer a solution to us. We discovered to our horror that Holland America had accepted additional money from someone to hire a large portion of the ship for a private function which meant that after waiting for an hour and a half for a good seat to watch wildlife I was told I had to move out of that section!!! We were dropped at the airport to go home at 10.30am with 8 hours to wait at the airport before our flight, both ill with the flu. Sanitisation on board was very poor with just a hand cleaner before entry to the restaurants which about 50% of people noticed or used. We held off writing a bad review because we wanted Holland America to have a chance to reply. They agreed we had been treated badly and offered to pay us £500 compensation which was a very small percentage of the price we paid but we agreed to accept as we were pretty annoyed by this time with the whole thing and wanted to forget it. HOWEVER over 3 months later we have still not received any compensation despite several e-mail chases and an e-mail from the travel agent. My opinion is that if you are looking to book a holiday of a lifetime to Alaska then avoid Holland America. Read Less

Our intent on this trip was to have a relaxing time on board ship while seeing Alaska. We had been told that Holland America is a notch above the competition, but found that it didn't come close to other cruise lines. We actually had a horrible experience. There was a major problem with the heating and cooling unit in our cabin. They tried 3 times to adjust the temperature, but our room remained hot, making sleep difficult. We would wake up sweating. We asked for a fan, but they said none were available. We repeatedly asked that they fix it but the gal at the desk continued to blow us off, saying they were already in there several times to fix it, as if it was our problem. Finally, with 2 nights left we were both sick, and I insisted we have a fan. Finally our dear housekeeper brought us one which was taken out of an office. Two and a half weeks later we are still sick with a respiratory virus. Also, my husband uses a Cpap machine which has a filter. After 2 weeks on the ship the filter was black. At home he changes it once a month and it's always light gray. That says something about the ventilator. We will never go on Holland America again. Our once in a lifetime trip to Alaska was ruined. We always look forward to the food on a cruise, but we found the dining room meals to be very salty and underwhelming. However, a need for a medically necessary gluten free diet was met by the very conscientious staff. The staff in the dining areas were wonderful. Most of the entertainment we saw was excellent, but there were a couple performers who were crude and disrespectful. If I was grading this cruise experience I would have to give it an F. The positive features couldn't compensate for our horrible cabin experience and our lengthy illness from it. Read Less

My sister and I booked our cruse thru the cruse agent. We asked for a quiet cabin away from any ice machines, elevator, area with music etc. A quiet area. The first night we heard banging, and what sounded like something heavy rolling over concrete. We were under the 24 hour a day active ships galley. After being told there were no other cabins available, we asked for one of the ships land tours instead. They would not but sent us chocolates and a sorry card. We were stuck on a ship where could not get any sleep. Sleep deprivation is used to break down prisoners not people on vacation. Long miserable story short we got on the ship August 5th 2017 and off on the 13th. On the 13th we got off the ship and took the ships transport to Anchorage for our after cruse vacation. That very afternoon my sisters went to bed in the hotel with a fever. When the fever spiced to 103.8 I took her to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. She has a horrifying case of bacterial Pneumonia. She is still in the hospital today August 25th. PS, I also have Bronchitis and was put on Antibiotics. No ship should have a galley over cabins. Put it over the shops or anyplace where people are supposed to be able to sleep. The ship is ask horrible. To them a movie about Alaska and people talking about Alaska is considered shipboard entertainment. The food in the dining room and the coffee came out cold. The nice buttery croissants came out refrigerator cold. We met people with kids who told us that the kids went to planned events and nobody was there. When they complained they were told they were not there to entertain their children .WHAT????? Read Less

We chose this cruise as a way to get back from Alaska to Vancouver. We were hoping for a smaller, less crowded, low-key cruise. What we got was a filthy ship, illness everywhere, change in itinerary, the worst customer service I've every experienced, really lame entertainment - I mean the worst!, and did I mention how dirty everything was? The good - our room was great. We had a verandah suite with a balcony. The Piano Bar and the BB King Blues Club was a blast. Our room stewards were amazing and we left them a very large tip. And now for the bad. I feel terrible writing all of this and hate to be a person who complains, but I'm hoping to warn people before they choose this cruise line or maybe catch the attention of HAL to make some changes (I did fill out their customer service survey, but didn't get a response). Be warned - this is not a young persons cruise. We are late 30's early 40's and I would not recommend this cruise to anyone under 70 - or hip and fun 80/90 year olds. You will be bored, hungry, and disappointed. The food selection. We've cruised before and were treated to wonderful food, awesome buffets, beautiful dining room experiences. This was the lowest quality food I've experienced, very little selection, terrible dining service, and very limited meal times. You know when they say that you can eat any time you want on a cruise? This is not the case on Holland. The food times are hit and miss and even then, there's very little selection. One evening I was really hungry so I went down to the Lido. I was told by one staff when the Lido was going to be open. I went down there and there was nothing available except the pasta bar. When I asked a group of employees about when it was going to open, they first half ignored me as if they couldn't be bothered (they were standing in a group just hanging out). Finally, one just told me the pasta bar was the only option. We gave up numerous times and tried to get room service. Well, half of the time no one answered and once you could get through, it would take over an hour to get the food. Half of the orders weren't even correct. I'm literally not exaggerating. We tried the dining room. We had one good night of dining on our 7 day cruise. One night, we were completely forgotten about. With HAL, you have to give them your entire order at the beginning of dinner. On other cruises, you could try anything you wanted and even order more of something if you really liked it. This is not the case on HAL. We ordered espresso to go with dessert. Well, they brought the dessert, and then about 30 minutes later brought over the coffee. Oh well. The food selection seemed to be kind of the same every night. Heavy meat, mashed potatoes and limp veges. There was a salad bar and that helped a little. There were very few dessert options and the pizza was sub par as well as their hamburgers on deck. I still don't understand how they can mess up a hamburger bun. For lunch there were pre-made sandwiches. That's right - nothing to order, you were at the mercy of what they decided to prepare that day (I'm lactose intolerant and literally went hungry and lost weight on this cruise). We tried to eat at the dining room for lunch one day and we missed it because they closed at noon. I felt the meal times and food selection catered to...hmmm...an older crowd. Mushy traditional food options felt retirement-homish. In one of the bars, the tables were filthy, there were empty glasses everywhere and we couldn't get any service, not even at the bar. We were told that we had to wait for the waitress to come around. After quite a wait, she finally came over (it was not busy at all), took our drink order and while she was leaving, we asked if she could take the empty glasses from our table. She acted completely put out, picked up the glasses and literally left the used napkins. There was no attempt to clean or wipe the sticky dirty table. We had to hold our drinks because it was unsanitary to put them down. One morning we bought coffee in the coffee shop before we got off the ship at a port. While we were getting off we were told that we couldn't take it with us. They never mentioned this at the coffee shop where we had just gotten the coffee (backpacks and gear clearly indicating that we were headed on shore). There was no apology, we were rudely told to dump it. We were given some lame excuse about the noro outbreak. Ok, no problem, but put up a sign at the coffee shop if that was the case. Interestingly, we were able to buy a bottle of water to take on shore right at the same place. $10 wasted! I went to the spa - which was ok. Not great, but ok. The waiting room didn't have any water or anything to drink. They claimed it was because of how many sick people were on board. Great! I was really thirsty after being in the sauna before my massage and mentioned this to my massuse who just said - sorry. I'm so glad I paid over $200 for this "luxury" spa experience. They could have put out some bottled water. The icing on the cake - they gave us the wrong disembark tag - 3 times! We had even booked our ship to airport transfer with them and filled out all of the paperwork and they still gave us a time that would make us miss our flight. After 3 visits to the front desk, I finally lost it. I demanded the earliest time, demanded that they refund our transfer fee, and we kept our suitcases and left as early as we possibly could. Thank goodness we did because this was the only way we were able to make our flight on time. They could care less. I've never felt more relief than getting off this ship in Vancouver. I could feel my whole body relax. We are both professional kind patient people (I'm a counselor with an advanced degree who works with children and families). I felt like we were on the cruise from hell. My biggest regret was not getting off in Juneau and flying home early. What a waste of money. Read Less

My wife and I are 3 Star Mariners on Holland America and have taken many Holland American cruises since 1978. They have always been great, memorable cruises. My wife had been wanting to visit Alaska and Denali. This seemed to be the perfect cruise. We left the Vancouver Port on Sunday, and cruised the inner passage all day Monday arriving in Ketchikan the following day. Ketchikan was a quaint little town that we just walked around enjoying the surroundings. A couple of days into the cruise, I didn't feel well and visited the ships doctor. She diagnosed and treated me for constipation. We then visited Juneau and traveled on to Skagway. We didn't participate in the shore excursions that we paid for since I was still feeling ill. I visited the ships doctor again and was told to continue the treatment she had previously prescribed for the constipation. . We were scheduled to travel the Inner Passage the next 2 days viewing Glacier Bay and arriving in Anchorage 2 days later with no scheduled stops. I felt pretty bad and thought that I might have had to have an emergency evacuation while we cruised for those 2 days if it got worse. I tried to get a plane out of Skagway with the conceriege's help so I could get to my own doctor in Alabama. No planes were available so we had to take a ferry back to Juneau to catch our flight to Seattle, stay overnight, and finish our trip to the East coast the following day. When we got home I visited my doctor who diagnosed me with a respiratory infection. He gave me a shot in the office and prescribed additional medications. I felt much better the next day, enough so that I could have continued with the cruise if I had been correctly diagnosed by the ships doctor and received the same treatment on board the ship. I called HA and explained the situation to them and asked if they would provide me credit for a follow-on cruise. They said that since I decided to discontinue our cruise, which was not authorized as an emergency by the doctor, they did not feel responsible. They said I should have gotten trip insurance. NOTE to Cruisers- Trip insurance will not provide any reimbursement when the ship's doctor did not call for an emergency evacuation or recommend the passenger discontinue the cruise. BEWARE-you can pay a lot of money for trip insurance and not get one cent in return if you felt it was an emergency but the ships doctor did not agree that you should discontinue the cruise. My last great cruise on HA was in 2006. This is not the same Premier Cruise line it once was. It has deteriorated greatly since being acquired by Carnival Corp. If I had known that when I booked my cruise I probably would not have used Holland America since I had cruised on Carnival one time and was so disappointed that I said "never again". NEVER again will I cruise Holland America, nor will I ever recommend them. Read Less
