I chose this cruise because a group of 18 of us wanted to cruise on a riverboat. This group cruises frequently but never a riverboat. Nothing about this cruise line is current. You can't even make online reservations. We had planned and booked everything before boarding, premium excursions, private cocktail reception. After boarding no one at the customer service desk or tour desk seemed to know what they were doing. Everyday our group had to go to the desk about issues. We paid top price for a private reception before the cruise, they didn't have this booked onboard, even after we confirmed and went to the room for the reception, they still didn't know anything about it. The cabins are so tiny, dingy, lack of storage and not worth the price that we paid for this cruise. The dining room service was horrible, they simply didn't care. The towns that we stopped in are mostly small and not much to see. Glad we booked premium tours that actually went somewhere else. Disembarkation was very confusing, they really didn't tell you what to do, you just followed other cruisers that kind of knew what to do. The 'Local riveratarion' turned out to be the same man that does the lighting in the theater!! Nothing local about that, he shared his very political opinions, that were not always appropriate. Sorry American Queen our group won't be back. Read Less

Chose this cruise because it was a new vessel and we wanted to sail the upper Mississippi. Instead of leaving from St. Louis we were bused to another city and sat for several hours. This American Duchess should never have sailed; the trip was completely disorganized. Crew were all new and didn't know what to do, furniture was missing in the cabin. The cabin wasn't cleaned. The company announced that the Duchess was all suites. It was misleading because there were very few suites. We know the difference after sailing 48 cruises. Had to wait one half hour at the dining room and for mediocre food at best. Two ports were cancelled because of the time factor; very disappointing indeed. Heard the CEO say to other passengers that a complimentary cruise would be issued because of all the problems. In order to qualify you would have to take another cruise on the Duchess in 2018. This complementary cruise never happened ! All we got was a check equivalent to two days. The American Queen office was contacted and they refused to honor the free cruise. We demanded a refund on another Queen booking which was received much later. Nevertheless we will never sail with this sleese bag operation again nor will others in our party ! Read Less

This cruise line makes all kinds of promises and then backs out once they have your money. We paid out almost $30,000 for 3 suites and got bupkes. The bathrooms were so small as to be laughable. You could not turn around in the shower. The maître D was the most ignorant and unpleasant we have ever encountered. We have taken many cruises including ocean and river cruises in Europe and river cruises in U.S. This line is beyond description. SAVE YOUR MONEY Take another cruise line. River cruising is really great fun and very relaxing when cruise line knows what it's doing We also had to walk several blocks from the hotel to the dock for our embarkation. The so-called riverlorian was a little old lady who read from notes and obviously did not know her subject or the river very well. The so-called entertainment was a young husband and wife who sang and tried to entertain but fell miserably short. They did however lead several exercise walks in several ports of call. Read Less

For $700 a night per person, we expected decent food and service. Neither was provided. Prior to booking, we confirmed that they could handle a gluten free menu since my husband has celiac disease. They assured us they could. The menu did have allergen symbols on it, but the Maitre D admitted they were often wrong. The wait staff was uninformed and unconcerned about dietary problems. If you have a problem, DON't go on this line. My husband has been sick for a week, despite vigilance. The dining room is sorely mismanaged and often frigid. The wait staff is rude, surly, and actively inattentive. They gravitated to the waiter station to chit chat. Breakfast and lunch could be either buffet or menu. If you did buffet, dirty dishes were not cleared. The buffet has one malfunctioning toaster for 400 people. One morning I ordered toast and an egg. My husband ordered gluten free toast. My order came in 23 minutes: his came in 27 minutes. And the dining room was not busy. This was the worst service in 450 days of cruising. Only Blount has worse food. Food that should have been hot usually was not. Only one soup was offered at a meal.. The same soup was served 3 times in 7 days. Bread almost came up to Wonder Bread standards. Getting coffee, tea, or wine at lunch required heroic efforts. It might finally be served by rude staff. Coffee and tea were not offered at dinner, though once again you could try. Fresh fruit at breakfast and desserts were good. Read Less

This was our 3rd AQ cruise and a major disappointment! The food was awful, not even truck stop quality. the pastries and bread were store bought instead of home made. the sauces/gravies were congealed in an unappetizing glue when served. they ran out of earl grey tea. most of the waiters were surly and inattentive at best. we came for lunch one day, waiters standing around, no one offered to seat us. one waiter was at the salad bar scooping up salad fixings into a plastic bag with no gloves on. finally we seated ourselves at a table by the window and went through the buffet line. as i picked up my fork to start eating, a waiter came by, said 'this table is closed', took away my silverware and glass and left me sitting there! at the captain's receptions, the snacks offered were STALE croutons topped with very nice salmon, but the salmon couldn't make up for the stale bread. and the weirdest thing was that the waiters poured bottle after bottle of champagne, walked around with trays of champagne, but wouldn't serve it, and when the hour was over, they poured dozens of glasses of champagne into the garbage! we ordered a baked potato several nights and got that awful "been on the hot tray for hours" gluey textured insult to a properly baked potato. ordered a steak one nite, purportedly a new york strip. they were obviously out of steaks and had cut a thin slice off the brisket they were serving as pot roast that night. tough as leather and as thin as a pancake! there was a nice omelet/waffle station at breakfast but the cook/waiter hadn't changed his uniform all week. it was disgusting! NOT what one expects when you spend $700/day on a cruise! The tours were ok, but not nearly as interesting as on the st paul to st louis or the columbia river cruise. the entertainment was lively but not great. the banjo player mistakenly thought he was tremendous but he was VERY mistaken. the jug band was the only really good entertainment. more appropriate would have been a single or duo playing acoustic guitar and banjo and singing songs and ballads of the river. the riverlorian was great. his lectures were a 'don't miss'. i would not book a cruise with the AQ again. i don't know if they're fixing to go bankrupt and cutting costs or what but we left feeling insulted rather than pleased and relaxed from an enjoyable cruise. the other couples at our dinner table agreed that the cruise did not meet their expectations and they would neither go on another nor would they recommend the AQ to anyone. Have been on numerous cruises & on several river cruises previously. Thought I would try the "Mighty Mississippi", so I booked on the biggest steamboat ever to sail that river. Trip was New Orleans round-trip, New Years Eve (week). The "free night" before is a ploy to attempt to sell you add-on tours to make-up for the usually pitiful included tours at each port. Oak Alley & Natchez included tours were good, but the others were a joke. They pride themselves on their own fleet of tour buses. The drivers were very pleasant, but some of the local tour guides must have been the only folks they could find for the job - let's just say they were "very local". We took two add-on tours - one was v. bad, the other "not a good value". We booked another cruise with Alex, their on-board salesperson. Put up a deposit & received confirmation & room assignment. Several months later, they defaulted on their agreement, and had sold our cabin to another party at a higher fare. We're considering legal action. Many of the reviews I've seen (after our cruise) talk about how the food is disappointing, but I thought it was one of their finer points. The wine however tasted like turpentine - if and when you could finally get a glass. The champagne I'm convinced was. Rarely do I leave/waste a glass of wine, but this time it seemed appropriate. They allow you to go to the engine room viewing area at will. The engineers are very knowledgeable and friendly, if not proud of the equipment. Very interesting. The common areas are exceptionally well done, and quite spacious for a river cruise. Entertainment was good. The "riverlorean" was very good, but bridge tours were only allowed while at port when you were off on a tour. You had to miss a tour if you wanted to see the bridge. The cruise was not really that bad, but over-priced, and I have a big problem with anybody/company that defaults on their end of a deal. Read Less
