This was our first Princess cruise, so we truly didn't know what to expect other than what we had read and what Princess is known for. Embarkation was a breeze even if we were required to fill out a medical questionnaire stating our exposure, or lack of exposure, to Covid-19. No temperature check or screening of any kind. Once onboard, we found evidence of what all the previous reviews had mentioned. This is an older ship and shows it with rust in many areas, disabled elevators, etc. Even with these shortcomings we were still quite excited to begin our 25th wedding anniversary cruise. The first noticeable observation was that this cruise was populated with older adults. The largest age group represented was the 70+ group. Many walkers, canes and electric scooters. Since this itinerary was 15 days and right in the middle of the school year, we didn't expect to see many young people, but we weren't truly prepared for this demographic. All that said, we had a great time. Our dining room staff was top notch, the Broadway-type shows were very good and the magician/comedian(Christopher James) was hysterical! There were several activities during the many sea days and the food was quite good. We paid the up-charge for the Crown Grill steakhouse and felt it was money well spent. Sadly, everything changed on the 12th day. We were informed that a passenger on the previous cruise has contracted the Coronavirus and, regardless of usual cleaning practices, we were now considered exposed to the virus. We were allowed to dine for our lunch meal after which we would be confined to our rooms. Masks were issued and social distancing was encouraged for lunch, but instead most folks treated it as if this would be the last meal they would receive. Taking as much food as they could carry to their rooms. While confined to our rooms, Princess did an amazing job of keeping us fed, amused and informed. The captain would make frequent announcements and we had meals and activities delivered to our rooms. Our stewards would place a tray/container at our door, knock and then stand a safe distance away. We had booked a balcony, so access to fresh air and sunshine was immediate. The folks in inside staterooms were allowed to walk the upper decks, in small groups, on a controlled schedule . Princess also gave everyone free wi-fi and added new content to the "on demand" TV viewing options. Our last port, Ensenada, was eliminated so we could head directly back to San Francisco. We floated in limbo for a couple days until Oakland graciously accepted us. We didn't realize how good we had it until we were placed in the hands of US authorities. Princess did everything right with the information and supplies/services they were provided. The generosity of Princess was exemplary. I have nothing but good things to say about how our crew, and the Princess team, dealt with our constantly evolving situation. Read Less

Our very first Princess cruise was 19-night Panama Canal cruise on 3/18/19, and we fell in love with Princess and didn't want to disembark. My husband always wanted to cruise to Hawaii, so we were excited when my cousins wanted the 1/27/20 15-night Grand Princess to Hawaii from San Francisco! Captain JP Bryant is incredibly funny, caring, lighthearted, very personable; his communications were loud, clear, understandable and without an accent! He is a great leader! 1/27/20 Grand Princess cruise activities by the Assistant Cruise Directors Guido, Olivia, Miranda, Mina, Natalie, and Saskia were so fun and hilarious: sail away party dancing, 2 Paper Plane Challenge contests, coloring cards, Discovery at Sea, fresh orchid lei making, Group Renewal of Vows and the certificates delivered to our room; Hawaiian language, Hawaiian Paper Rope artwork, the High Seas Heist Game, Is That Your Final Answer Game, Hula Dancing, line dancing, Majority Rules Gameshow, Marriage Match Gameshow, Mexican face painting, Name that Tune with Rock Hits, Painting in 90 seconds, Princess Pop Choir, ribbon lei making, trivia, True or Moo Game, Valentine card making, and the Yes No Game! Alex Belyy- the Grand Princess House Musician did a super job as he filled in as the Ukulele instructor. I thoroughly enjoyed Musician AJ Clark, Blues Brother Tribute Band; Brian the Hawaiian Ambassador with his beautiful voice and taught us Ukulele lessons; Comedian Impressionist Mike Wilson; Comedian Michael/Miguel Washington; Culinary Show; DJ JaXx playing songs from ABBA and the 70's; the Grand Princess Crew Talent Show; Instrumentalist Doug Cameron; the Love Boat Disco Deck Party; Magician Handsome Jack's variety act; the Martini demonstration by the bar tenders; Naturalist Mark Harris' Bears Everywhere; Production Show British Invasion & Stardust; Vocalist Phillip Brone; the Supersonics band; Leo the Photographer gave an educational photography presentation with very clear words at a nice-and-slow pace so I could understand all his words the first time he said them. My Grand Princess cabin steward Romeo was awesome and always provided what I needed right away. Our clothes were washed and pressed perfectly! My husband and I loved the Grand Princess buffet (especially the Mongolian Stir Fry Station with custom-ordered Asian meal that I became accustomed to from our Panama Canal cruise), the main dining room food, the Salty Dog Grill burgers and fries, and the International Cafe sandwiches, cookies, and salad. Alfredo's Pizzeria was incredible! I usually don't care for pizza but I ate 2 whole pizzas (custom made to my liking) to myself! For the first time in our 9 cruises we've taken in our life time, we played ping pong, and swam in the pool with big waves on the Grand Princess! For the first time I did Tai Chi for many of the mornings. We loved our 2 Grand Princess shore excursions: ITO205 Akaka Falls, and snorkeling in Molokini in which we saw a lot of whales close up and got to swim with turtles! We never feel 15 nights or 19 nights is too long on Princess! We love you Princess and we will cruise you again and again! Read Less

Selected cruise for its Hawaiian ports and warm weather plus sailing on the Grand via San Francisco. Amazing cruise, amazing service by Grand Princess staff, and beautiful islands. Highly recommend Grand Princess for its world class service, wonderful and warm staff, and clean ship. Though it's an older ship, staff work hard to maintain the Grand Princess, and officers and staff were present throughout the ship 24/7. Had an excellent cabin steward and professional and wonderful dining room wait staff. Amazing trip onboard the beautiful Grand Princess! Like our waiter, Jonel Bola said, "The Grand Princess is known for #1 service out of its entire fleet of 18 vessels." The entire dining room staff was amazing and wonderful to all its dining passengers. The food was good, plenty of desserts to choose from, and staff are generous with service, extras/portions, drinks, and smiles! All staff throughout the ship were kind, courteous, warm, and provided consistent service and were very hard working. Service throughout the ship was consistent and amazing! Ship Captain, JP Bryant, was very nice and courteous and always greeted passengers pleasantly. This was a 16-day cruise! Have done shorter and longer cruises, but a 16-day is a perfect amount of time for a winter getaway! I highly recommend the beautiful Grand Princess! Others might be concerned that it's an older ship but I find it to be quaint, comfortable, has character, beautiful, has internet service, and has excellent and consistent customer service. I've sailed on the Grand 6 times and each time I've experienced consistent customer service! And, if something wasn't right, staff will work quickly and very hard to make the problem right! No complaints when I'm on the Grand! Read Less

I was told that Princess Cruies were great. I found out differently. The food was not what I had expected. The buffet closed in the afternoon and the selection were the same thing day after day. The best part of my cruise was the cabin that was well kept. They should offer more keroake. It was something that I enjoy doing. The shows were not what I had expected. The casino could be a little bit looser. It was run like an Indian casino. No winners only loosers. The gift shope were ok. The Effy Jewelry store was well stocked and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed seeing Faye, Saba, Ozzie, Crieg, and Sheva they have nice personality. I spent a lot of time in the Effy Store and spent a lot of money but got some great buys. I wish I could say something better about my cruise but I was quite disappointed with the food and the shows. I'll stick with NCL for sure Read Less

We went for Renewal of Vows and a Holiday get away to a warmer climate. We had a fantastic time on this Hawaii cruise! Weather in Hawaii was perfect in December, 75F-90F. We didn’t find any all day excursions, but didn’t want to do only 1/2 day. We just took Uber to local beaches for snorkeling, lunch, and drinks. All in one location. Beaches were not crowded and we had a blast! Most of the passengers on this cruise were elderly, hardly any kids. It was nice: quiet and not crowded. Only during breakfast it was quite difficult to find a table. There were too much food, so we usually skipped lunch. Pools and jacuzzi were not crowded as well. We really enjoyed the whole experience, very friendly service, great captain, food was delicious and well presented. We loved Formal nights and went to the Crown Grill, and Sabatini restaurants. Both were great! Balcony dinners were our favorite experience! Private and very personal dinners with fantastic waiters! Highly recommend. Captain did a very romantic Renewal of Vows, it was a touching moment. Then photographer took us to several locations and we loved our photos so much, we bought a $400 photo package. We loved the Spy Lectures Series and last Dancing Show. Made many great memories and loved this vacation! If you purchase any packages, print summary. Stuff gets confused what’s included in what package and it’s easier to show them a paper to claim all of the services. Read Less

This was a pre Christmas cruise that we extended to Dec 28.Exploring San Francisco before and after the cruise was an added bonus. We had the amazing itineraries of Hawaiian ports and then Mexican ports back to back. The ship was so beautifully decorated for the season, embarkation and disembarkation so easy, the cabin larger than the standard. The servers were enthusiastic and gracious. The food was excellent -the steaks on the Crown Grill done to perfection. The main dining room had offerings from Curtis Stone and the Vista was a reliable and tasteful place to dine. The afternoon tea in the dining room was delightful and an elegant experience. Sabatinis the Italian Restaurant even had the best desserts.Vines had Opus One bottles of which we bought 2 as gifts. Faouzzi, the pizza chef at Alfredo's pizzeria even created his favourite pizzas for us on request. The One 5 disco had a great DJ.Many fun activities on board for everyone-trivia a favourite, hula dancing classes and lei making before reaching Hawaii pleased everyone. There was even a native show when we were docked in Hawaii. The excursion at Honolulu visiting Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial and even to explore the submarine USS Bowfin was a once in a lifetime experience. The music especially the music of piano man Liam Stewart was exceptional. He even had his own 2 performances of Elton John songs in the Vista Lounge which were well attended. A couple of hundred children joined the ship with their families on Dec 18 and their spirit brought new joy to the ship and passengers. Adam Gorst the Hotel Manager was always visible with his wit, charm, and vigilance. The first woman Head maitre'd on Princess ships- interacted constantly with everyone during the dining with warmth and interest. A great time for every passenger on a newly renovated ship with lots of history and charm! Read Less

We've been on this cruise many times. So all was as expected. There are many sea days filled with activities or just relaxing. Loved the lectures about Hawaii...culture/history/natural wonders...what to see and food. Loved the hula and ukulele lessons, and all the Hawaiian crafts and music. Food was as always consistently good. Effy was giving out charms if you attended some of their workshops. These cute charms are great to give to grand daughters. Amazing to see the mass of women wanting these inexpensive freebies (and I was one of them :)). British Invasion singers were excellent. The Voice of the Ocean was funny and fun. We were surprised by the very talented contestants. Already taken many tours in past trips so this time we did the following local things... Hilo:Took free Farmers' Market bus took us to their local farmers' market and crafts' market downtown. Ate delicious Ono fish at a local restaurant. Shopped for inexpensive Hawaiian candy/cookies and coffee at local grocery store. Took taxi back from bus stop...$5 each for car load. Honolulu:Took bus (with Medicare card only $1) to Waikiki beach near zoo, visited best place for inexpensive trinkets/souvenirs...Duke's Marketplace, and walked all the way to end of Hawaiian Village Shopping (ate in food court) center. Took bus to Ala Mona shopping center. Thought it was too big and commercial so took bus back to ship. Arrived in time to see ship's visiting Hawaiian show. Mau,Lahaina: Walked all of Front Street (full of beach/ocean views, cute shops and cafes) to outlet shopping mall. Took local bus to Konopoli ($1 for senior). Walked beautiful beach. Had delicious Hawaiian lunch plate at Whaler's food court. Then took a taxi($17 or $5 per person if 4 or more) back to tender area. Kuai, Nawiliwili: Took free bus to tiny local shops/restaurants nearby (Also in walking distance.). Walked the nearby beach and grounds (otanical garden with koi pond) of Marriott Resort. Ate at Duke's. Took a free shuttle to Walmart to buy macadamia nut products and 100% Kona coffee. Read Less

From stepping on the Grand Princess I felt privleged by the crew! There wee so many crew members willing to asist when you may look lost (hehe). The public areas were nicely appointed in the fabrics used and the decor of each lounge. I was impressed that all the bars had their own menus different form others so I enjoyed trying each and especially the drinks made from Rob Floyd for Princess. The dining room menus were very creative and always different, no recycled food being renamed like on other ships menus. I felt I had an epicurian experience at evey meal, especially lunch and dinner. Chef Thomas in charge of the specialty restaurants impressed me the most! He knows how to cook lobster to lamb and so much more. We have dined in the finest restaurants and never experienced the consistancy that Chef Thomas brings to Princess. Eko part of the bar service always made us feel welcomed and we veiw him as family. Can't wait for Alaska in August! Read Less

Aniversary birthday, 15 days what a big ship, excursions were not worth the money go on you own. room was small but the price was right, the casino everyone won, Its been 72 hrs and I'm still rocking. The time changes were confusing. The inside tv was good room service had hot tasty hamburgers. Pizza not so good, ice cream wasn't icecream. The charges for drinks were slow and confusing. The buffet was the same every day lots of fruit, can't get a table in the buffet, you have to get there early or late. dinning was great but having to share, some people talked your head off, cafe lounges can't get a seat they save them for others. The pool loungechairs were taken up with people putting stuff on them to save for others The pool was closed a lot due to rocking on the boat. hot tubs had all the kids in them to get warm. I am not an experienced cruise customer. Only 1 other cruise and that was over 2 years ago. However, several friends wanted to take the cruise, so we booked a mini-suite. Embarkation went very smoothly. Disembarkation was very slow with no explanation given for the 1 hour delay. The cabin was ok. Sufficient room and storage. A little worn. Bathroom tiles worn and stained. Grout was failing. Cabin steward was very good. Food was slightly disappointing.. Entrees ranged from marginal to adequate to excellent. Specialty dining was very good. Many parts of the ship were well worn. A prime example was the widespread rust throughout the exterior. Entertainment was adequate. A good mix of different styles. Activities were somewhat limited unless you happened to be a trivia buff. On the other hand, virtually all the staff were exceptional. Polite, efficient, courteous, and helpful. Not so much with the ship's officers, however. They were aloof and at times dismissive. But I will never cruise with Princess again. The fare for the 2 of us was just under $10,000 and it included a $300 credit for our cabin which was clearly noted on the booking documentation that was sent to us. However, the credit did not appear on our account. Princess refused to honor the credit telling us that we had the responsibility to resolve the issue with our travel agent. Are you kidding me? We spend almost $10,000 and they can't fix the problem between them and the agent? The customer service desk did send a message to the main office, which failed to help, but then never contacted us with a response. Gotta be a better cruise company out there. Read Less

Princess has it right on Embarkation and Disembarkation. Smooth process proved to be one of the best. The ship is older and void of all the exciting pastimes of newer ships but full of traditional pastimes for older passengers. Cabin service was so exceptional that any flaws in furnishings was not noticed. Wow service for sure there! Food was exceptional in all aspects..better than any other cruise line I have experienced. Dining service was exceptional as well. Entertainment left a little to be desired. Needed more productions, more seating and better entertainers...something more breathtaking like "arial" acts, and such. Found myself bored at certain times, but mainly because of the weather and lack of other exciting activities. Not just gambling. Service everywhere was exceptional and I loved the staff. Only a couple of issues there, not worth mentioning. The Islands were awesome, economical and interesting. Less expensive than Ensenada, Mexico (who had ridiculously high prices) and no bargaining. One fan for $7.....really!!!! Don't even get off at that port. The cruise was rough sailing but we never got sick so hats off to Prncess! We would recommend but would not go again. Read Less

It was holiday time and I was looking forward to visiting Hawaii. We arrived in San Francisco two days early to do some sight seeing before boarding Grand Princess. Had a very nice time in spite of Fisherman's Wharf being very expensive. IE breakfast ( bacon, eggs and toast $53.00 American). Hotel not worth 299.00 +. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. The crew did a great job. Service was excellent, friendly, informative and helpful. THE SHIP....WE dealt with issues like a worn out mattress, noises that were caused from the ship needing repair. We were finally given an alternative room which was no better than the first. The ventilation was poor and a soft spot in the floor. The shelf in the fridge was broken. We dealt with sopping wet carpet in the hallway between our cabin and the Horizon Court eatery on a daily basis. The sofa's and side chairs in the Explorer's Lounge and the Vista Lounge were so worn out, when you sat in them it was a struggle to get up. Read Less

We had a wonderful time on our first Princess Cruise. We had plenty of things to do and also spent time relaxing and enjoying our Anniversary and Husband Retired cruise! I had read other comments previously about the Grand Princess and it needing a facelift. Well it is over 20 years old, however we saw maintenance painting, cleaning and doing general maintenance. It is an older ship but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Food: We ate in the Buffet, Burger place and Pizza place. We also ate in the Crown Grille and that was a great choice for our anniversary dinner! Our cabin steward was Oliver. He was great, always greeted us by name. Always had bed made and towels. Never had to call and ask for anything. One of the waiters that we would like to recognize is Raymond. We typically went to the Buffet (quick and easy) and Raymond would greet us by name. Always quick to bring coffee and remember that my husband took cream and mine black. Also remember that I always wanted 2 orange juices so I could make my "greens drink". Sandra in the gift shop was very personable. When we went in to look for something she knew if they had product or not. Saw her on the last day waiting to get off ship - she also remembered us, and saw that she was very helpful with directing people on where to go. Photography - well Joe Clark with the Platinum photographs was great. We spent almost 2 hours with him doing a photo session - I loved the black and whites - my husband was expecting color so he did not like them as much - he did find some that he loved. Anthony took many of our pictures - casual nights / formal nights. He was awesome and does a great job; Knows angles / lighting etc. He is also another one of those people that remembers our names and greets us by name. Offshore tours - just a couple of comments. Lots of choices but I did find that the popular ones were typically already sold out prior to the cruise. Our main choice for Honolulu was Pearl Harbor - of course all sold out. They did open up a Pearl Harbor visit and city tour - our tour guide was awesome and we also were able to get the Arizona tickets. We did find out that those tickets were FREE - why does the ship tour cost so much if you included AZ visit? Our Zip line tour in HILO - Awesome! Another item off the bucket list. We would take this cruise again. We didn't spend much time on the balcony (too busy) so we would probably go with a different type of cabin next time. Read Less

Have read some negative comments but I knew I was going on a ship that was 20 yrs old so my expectations were a little lower. I have been on newer ships that I did not enjoy nearly as much as this ship. The staff were great. And I loved our at sea days. I knew in advance we only had 4 ports, and I was looking forward to the sea days. I love sea days so I can relax and unwind. If I wanted fewer sea days, I would choose a different cruise. I make a point not to take a cruise that is a different port every day and no down time......There was the issue with the water leak/flood in one side of Horizon Court but I think Princess did a great job of trying to make things as good for the passengers as they could. It meant sometimes sharing a table in buffet area but hey what a great way to meet new people....The service was really good on the ship, esp room steward and wait staff. My husband and I renewed our wedding vows, and Princess made it so special.....I would definitely take this cruise again. I would not do it at Christmas again, but that has nothing to do with Princess and more to do with so many children. I really enjoyed the Grand but I think the larger newer ships have more to offer children. In fact if I were taking children, I would have chosen a Disney cruise or Royal Caribbean. One reason I like Princess overall is the slower pace. I look forward to doing this cruise again. I have cruised since 2005 and on NCL, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Princess. Princess is my favorite. My husband has only cruised twice....the 1st was NCL to Alaska in 2016. Horrible ship and staff and he was not sure he wanted to cruise again. But he was amazed at how much better this cruise was, esp the staff. He said he would do this cruise again even though the ship was older. We are planning cruise to Caribbean next year and it will definitely be on Princess. Read Less

My wife and I were on the Grand to Mexico September 25 through October 5 and then again to Hawaii November 13 through November 28. Now, ordinarily, as a person who still has to work, I would not have spent 25 out of the last 60 days on the ocean, but my wife is terminally ill and we are running out of time, so I'll not be denying her anything. More than anything, my wife wanted to be cruising and Princess and the Grand came through in spades! We live in San Francisco, so being able depart and arrive from home is so great. Amazed at how both the Port and Princess handles the embarkation and disembarkation process. Simple amazing. For example, when it was time to leave after the Hawaiian cruise, we left our cabin at 8 and were walking through our front door at home before 10. What made both cruises so special were really the people running the boat. From our Super Steward Agustin (best cabin steward ever), to Hazel the room service operator who developed a relationship with us and was very concerned about my wife, to Emily Ashcroft and the customer service desk who helped my wife arrange a really lovely vow renewal ceremony on the first cruise, to the charming Jobelle in the Piazza bar, to Camille and then Gretchen at the Michelangelo dining room who helped us get a cozy table for two at each dinner. The balcony and then mini-suite cabins we had were both awesome. The food was always good, whether in the Horizon Court buffet, the dining room, the Crown Grill, Sabatini's or the pop-up Crab Shack, which was our favorite. One note about the folks who complain about the food in the Horizon Court. In my opinion it helps to use a little imagination with the buffet food, rather than just accept the dishes as prepared. For example, you can use the salad bar ingredients as additions to other entrees or you could add the sauted cabbage to the soup offering, or you can build awesome sandwiches made exactly to your liking. Anyway, yes, the Grand is an aging grand dame, but she is aging very gracefully. Read Less

We wanted to take a cruise to Hawaii to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. We had heard that the ship was renovated in 2016 so we figured it would be pretty nice. I have to say that embarkation and disembarkation went very smooth! They have a great system!! The ship itself was pretty worn, old rugs, lots of chipping around the pools tiles. We had a balcony cabin, B504 mid ship...Very small. No room for luggage. I must say our room was always clean and our room stewart was exceptional. Dining was boring.. The food was just so so. There were some nights when we couldn't find anything we liked and we are pretty easy to please. We were thankful for the Sip&Saildeal that received for booking. The coffee was blah! We went to the International Caféwhich had fantastic coffee and other drinks. We also enjoyed drinks at some of thebars like a Milky Way Martini. Great bartenders!! The entertainment was good. A couple of comedians were funny. Shows were just ok. I have to say they have a lot to improve on to rate up there with Royal Caribbean!! Service was always good, except for the last day when we couldn't even get anyoneto bring us orange juice or coffee (International Café was closed on disembarkation day) I would not go on this ship again. If you fly from the East Coast to Hawaii you may spend 11 hrs flying. However, 5 1/2 hrs to SFO, hop in a cruise ship and you maybe saving $1500 if you count airfare, hotels, food, tours etc./ Things to remember: passport, book your tours before you leave home, otherwise you may find later on the ship your tour is closed. If you are traveling from SFO remember the avg temp is 61degrees. from Nov-May. Be prepared to feel cold weather, rocky seas and winds upwards of 25 knots for 6 of the 15 days you are sailing. Bring warm clothes for 10 days at sea. We brought bathing suits but the pool temperature was in the low 70s. If you are courageous you may watch movies outdoors. Book your transportation from SFO airport to Pier 27 and back as soon as you sign up for the cruise. Warning, it may take up to 1.5 hours from the airport. Our trip took that long on a Sunday at Noon. It took 35 minutes to travel two blocks at Embarcadero. Tours are very short, the best is the Arizona-Missouri Memorial. Be prepared to just bring a camera, tons of people go thru everyday and the security folks make you rent lockers at the reception center. This forces the rest of the tour group to wait for you to return to the bus. Hilo, Maui and Makawao are excellent tours. Unless you need to find a Pharmacy, the Ensenada tour is not worth getting. Oh, yes, the Pharmacy is 50 meters from the ship. The activity crew keeps you busy all 8 days at sea. Between Hula, line dancing, Ukulele lessons, Hawaiian history, art, photography lectures, Who can forget gambling? How about Bingo? At Happy Hour you can BOGO at 1/2 price. You can eat practically 18 hours a day and just in case you get up in the middle of the night hungry, just walk to the coffee shop and get a snack and a latte. Feel nostalgic? Go to the nightly shows and listen to your favorite tunes, magicians, dancers and stale jokes comics. Feel hungry after the show? Go to the pizzeria for a couple of slices. After all of these, you only wish to had less time at sea and more time in Hawaii. After we arrived home we couldn't wait to go back to work, we needed the rest........ Read Less

We booked 6 excursions in 5 ports now 2 of the 6 left something to be desired wiki beach break was unorganized and quite boring would not do it again next was the nipilia zodiack snorkle to start with this tour did not have the flotation divice that we have used in the open ocean on past curise excursion thay offered noodles rather then flotation vests and the seas were quite high in my opinon ((this is our 5th princess curise) all of my excursions have been booked with princess in the past these were no deal brakers but just keep in mind ,next the ship it self was everything that my wife and I had hoped for had one small problem with stateroom door lock which during the curise would not unlock and thay sent two techs to try to repair but ended up replacing the entire lock this happened at around 10:00 pm and thay had finished at 11:00 pm thay deat with the problem quickly and efficiently. We had the traditional dining as always the wait staff was very good as well as the cabin steward all interactions with the staff was very pleasant and appreciated. Entertainment and ashp board activities were more than enough to keep one busy during the day and entertained at night had state room c-702 balcony all in working order and very clean the balcony it self was quite large and had a half covered ceiling which let sun in and keep rain out over all curise was a howling sucess had greatest time will curise with princess again !!! We booked this cruise for our second honeymoon having just renewed our vows on our 11th anniversary, we are 38 & 54 and were travelling as a couple. We travelled to San Francisco on the 4th to give us time to explore the City and visit family in Martinez, we loved San Francisco and will definitely be back. We did Alcatraz, walked the Embarcadero and did all the bus tours. Unfortunately we had a couple of days of rain and wind but didn't spoil it for us, we are used to that in the UK! Both Embarkation and Disembarkation were very smooth, in fact of all 4 cruises we have done I don't think we have ever boarded faster, it was brilliant. The ship is lovely albeit in need of some TLC, there were an awful lot of buckets around and I think I was 'dripped' on at least once a day! I wasn't overwhelmed by the size of the ship particularly, we have previously cruised with Costa and although I am sure the Grand Princess was bigger it didn't feel like it, it also didn't have the grandeur that you get when you are on the Costa Atlantica which took my breath away the first time we cruised, that said its been over a decade since then so I may be underwhelmed there too! Our cabin was perfect and our steward was great. We had a balcony cabin on Lido Deck 14, lovely views, only downside is we were literally under the 'kids clubs' and it became apparent that a fair few teenagers had pretty much got on the ship and never seen their parents again, they were a bit out of hand, sliding along the corridors, (I saw the receptionist from the spa come out several times to ask them to be quiet!) and I had to step over them to get to the elevator. There was at least one 'holiday romance' taking place in the corridor outside our room!! the crew looking after them were a bit out of their depth to be fair to them. Might have been an idea for the parents to check in once or twice... We had the early dining sitting which I booked as we like to go to the shows - huge mistake! We were unable to get into a single 8pm show in 15 days, in hind sight we should have had the later dinner sitting then gone straight to the 10pm show which is where we ended up anyway. I think people were in that theatre from very early saving seats! We had buffet breakfast which was lovely plenty of fruit and cereals available. We also had lunch at Alfredo's Pizza Restaurant once and we ended up there at 11pm one night just before closing and they happily made pizza for us, it was lovely and I would highly recommend it. We enjoyed most of the shows, one or two of the acts in all honesty weren't great. There were plenty of activities going on and we did participate in one or two, we would normally join in with more but as I am sure other Brits have discovered everything is geared towards Americans so there is not much point attending any quizzes etc unless your American knowledge is excellent! I think unless you travel with P&O this is just one of those things! There were an awful lot of enrichment activities again this is personal choice and I am sure some people really enjoy them but its not for us and between those and all the shopping related activities we ran out of things to do by the end. There were an awful lot of shopping related activities on this cruise there were daily shopping events and they were always pushing the incredibly expensive Effy jewellery or the art work. I was in Effy one day to see what all the fuss was about, some lovely pieces but bonkers prices, in all honesty if I was going to invest in a piece of that price range i'm not sure I would be buying it on a cruise ship but personal choice, the sales technique had to be seen to be believed! Service was faultless, all the staff we encountered were lovely people. We did 8 sea days in total and to be honest I wouldn't do it again, not with Princess, going out wasn't too bad as you are still exploring etc but by the time you are heading back you have done everything and by then discovered there is no point attempting the quizzes etc. Ports were all excellent, I particularly liked the fact that all 4 Hawaiian Islands were different, my favourites was Maui. We did tours on all four islands as we doubt we will ever get back to Hawaii so wanted to see as much as we could. We booked these through Princess and couldn't fault them, well organised and they deserve a medal for getting everyone off the ship to tour buses, it was like herding cats! In Hilo we did the Volcano Park tour with stops at the Macadamia nut factory and Big Island candies, we were very lucky to see lava spewing on our trip, a surreal moment to be honest and something I will never forget. In Honolulu we went to Pearl Harbour, we did a half day tour as we had other things we wanted to fit in but ideally you need a full day here. We also went to lolani palace with tickets we bought online before we left, lovely audio tour and very friendly people. We then got a bus to Waikiki and got off just by the zoo and made our way back to the ship on foot, be warned that is a really long way, took over an hour so be sure before you set off! In Kauai I booked us the river cruise with luau and romantic ceremony as we were on our second honeymoon after renewing our wedding vows. Brilliant day everyone was amazing from the tour host to the singers the Smith family are amazing people and made us feel very welcome. I would recommend a trip to The Smith Family Luau if you are ever here. In Maui we did the Atlantis Submarine trip brilliant short trip down to the ocean floor and got to see lots of fish, sharks and rays, well worth it for kids. We spent the rest of the day just walking around enjoying the ridiculous hot weather and shopping, I finally had my shave ice! We did get off in Ensenada which we weren't going to as I had read terrible things on review sites before going and some of our fellow cruisers were less than complimentary but after 4 days at sea we were desperate to get off, it was absolutely fine and very hot! we walked from the port round to the centre (there was a shuttle bus, but really its 10 minutes walk at best) it was very pretty for a cruise port, I think we were approached by street sellers three times but I just politely said no and they went on their way, I think there is some heavy exaggeration on some review sites about this. A tip here don't get off with a $100 bill and expect to use it, a fellow traveller tried that and couldn't spend it anywhere, also you will get your change in pesos so take small dollar bills / change or if like us you are just grabbing a coffee use your card. We were travelling as a couple and there were more children than I had expected considering spring break had just finished and most schools in the UK were due back on the 18th but as long as you didn't want to use the two main pools it was fine! There was a lovely small outdoor pool at the back which was adults only and what time we did spend in the sun (I am a redhead so very little) was there. I am a non-swimmer and the pools were 5ft min which was a huge issue at 4ft 10in I haven't come across that before. I would definitely go to Hawaii again if it was an option and I probably would cruise with Princess again but I would choose my destination carefully. Read Less

Have cruised on HAL, NCL and CAR, so we have cruised before. This was our first time on a Princess ship. The Grand is an older ship that has a nice patina and is well maintained. Service by our steward, Michael P. was excellent. Dining was beyond good, it was GREAT! Although the menu was not expansive and tended toward Italian, you could always find something to like. Our two waiters, Jeffery and Glenn were the best! Always smiling and anticipating your every need. They made our mealtimes special. Our cabin was E312, on the Emerald deck. It as an obstructed view cabin, which we knew about. Since we had 9 sea days on the 15 day cruise, we didn't feel that a balcony was worth the extra expense. When we were in Hawaii, we went shore and toured, so even an inside cabin would have worked. The cabin layout was efficient, with the dimensions being 9' x 19' or 171 square feet. The cabin had a desk/make up area, 2 chairs, a refrigerator and flat screen TV. There was adequate lighting for reading in bed and enough storage for your clothes. The bed was super comfortable and we kept our cabin on the cool side so you could snuggle down in the bed at night and get a good night's sleep. The only complaints I had about the cabin were minor; The TV, when turned on, would default to the ship channel so that you had to see the 2 Princess Bozos chatting up the events of the day. The TV would not go to whatever you were watching when you last had it on. The other issues we had were some stains on the carpet and an inoperable temperature control on the shower, both were immediately taken care of by notifying Michael P., our cabin steward. Overall, this was a great way to see the Hawaiian Islands. The time zone problem was a non-issue, no packing up and re-packing every night. The only downside was we had just one day on each island but unless you have unlimited funds, every vacation is a compromise. Overall, our experience was a 9.9 out of 10 with Princess. ATTENTION VETERANS: Princess offers a $250 credit on a cruise of this length, but you need to send in your DD-214. Aloha, Drue Read Less

We have been with Princess for now 12 cruises, and in the past there were more activities that did not require money to have fun. The shows were cut down to 25 minutes, Anytime dining has screwed things up and cannot make some of the shows and the ChampagneFountain, is all about taking photo's. The Lotus Salon hustles people and hair care is expensive and since formal nights have changed into the Night of the Beverly Hillbillies, don't really enjoy formal night-all about the money, and not the event it was even 10 years ago. Also take an inventory of all your belongings, some of my hair clips could be found after the1st day, and searched forever, made a report to the Purser on the 3rd day and stated so in Princess questionnaire. Watch your valuables and know where everything is. Misplacing items can put a damper on your trip. Read Less

Aside for combining the cruise with a visit with my son's family in San Fran, Hawaii, like most people was on our bucket list. As well, my wife was turning 65 the next month...... Sailing right by ALCATRAZ and under the GOLDEN GATE bridge was something to look forward to. Albeit windy and overcast it was enjoyable. The weather didn't really improve until we approached the islands. The ship was in good condition (1998 I believe) but it did show signs of aging. Service was friendly. The food and entertainment both diverse and enjoyable. The cabin (deck 4 for) was clean and comfortable. We had booked our excursions on line with known excursion companies. Very satisfied. The only excursion we booked with Princess was In Maui. Unfortunately that is the one where we were notified ONLY when we entered our cabin that it had been cancelled. All the islands were unique and pleasant. Of course a day is not enough but we got a good taste of each. O'ahu has the most for tourists but with it the traffic and people. Quiet and relaxation on the others. My only beef is with the CRUISE industry as a whole. My wife and I started cruising about 14 years ago and this was number 13. What is changing is what is taking place in most industries. The accounts are now in charge and are nickel and dimeing as well as starting to create different passenger classes on board (in the shared areas). (Akin to the old European immigration days). When we started we all had the same treatment and food etc. Blending. No bias. No one made to feel uncomfortable. Now. Specialty restaurants. Specialty shows. Pay $20 per half day on the Princess Sanctuary to enjoy a quiet and improve ambiance......... The booze is not cheap and the casino's don't pay out nearly as often as Vegas. I and other people I know that cruised enjoy someone making their vacation simple, relaxing and enjoyable. As much stress as possible removed. Now, the quality and quantity of food that was available to all has been reduced and only those paying a Premium can partake. As with certain areas of the ship. Well I'm not going to the back of the ship anytime soon. If the lines don't be careful they will lose clients. I pay for a certain category of cruise ship and I do not wish to be discriminated against. Please serve accordingly. I have sailed RC, Princess, Norwegian and Carnival and they are all heading that route. Get the accounts out. Bring in Marketing people again. Make us feel SPECIAL. Read Less

It was a fantastic cruise to Hawaii. Had great weather and calm seas. Grand Princess had been in dry dock before our cruise. We had the new bedding and the ship looked like new. Enjoyed all the shows in the Princess Theater. Best entertainment ever! Aaron and his staff keep everyone entertained. Bought on a local Hula show in Honolulu. Rented a car in Maui and went to eat at Mama's Fish House. Did the boat to the Fern Grotto in Kauai. Volcano in Hilo. Hop on/Hop off Bus in Honolulu. Did the Steak House, Crab Shack and Sabatini's. They were all good. Recommend buying your Photo Package in advance to save money. We also bought the Coffee Card and Soda package. Spent the night at a Hilton close to Fisherman's Wharf. Enjoy seeing the sea lions and the view of Alcatraz. Had a Balcony cabin and enjoyed the balcony on the warm days and nights. trudallasite Read Less

We chose this cruise because it began and ended in San Francisco, which is only about an hours drive from our home. It was our first long cruise, and Princess Cruises kept us informed on line through their website of all that we needed. We were informed in detail of our identification requirements, suggests on packing and made us fully aware of what to expect. It was more than we expected. Food was award winning, and the dining room service was an experience in itself.. Dining rooms, including the ever popular buffet, were orderly and well decorated.. Our Room steward was exceptional. He serviced every detail and always said Hello and Have a nice dinner, or breakfast. On one particular rocky evening, I heard him call out to me by name to hold the railing. Entertainment was varied and current. Lectures were informative. If there is a complaint it is that there weren't enough hours in the day to do all you would like to. Read Less

This will be our ONLY cruise on Princess. We had high hopes as my brother in law likes Princess and recommended it. We however hated it and here's why: Food - The meat and seafood was grossly overcooked. We sent stuff back, we ordered it "Medium Rare" - it sill came out slammed. The sides were disappointing as well. For the most part everything friend came out soggy. The buffet was horrible, food way soggy and overcooked. Beds - The Grand Princess beds were replaced just a few weeks before our voyage. We found the beds lacking in support and too soft and uneven. My back hurt for most of the cruise as a result. Crowds - The ship was like an Ant hill. Other cruise lines we've been on pack far fewer people onto a ship the size of the Grand Princess. There were lines and crowds everywhere. We've never had to wait in line for an hour for anytime dining before. We took to calling in at exactly 8AM to make reservations. So that pretty much killed doing anything else around that time. We found it very stressful. Embarkation - I've never seen a crowd that big in a terminal. We showed up a tad early for our appointed check in time but still had to queue up for almost 2 hours before we could board. There was also a 30 minute line to check in suitcases. Never seen a mess like that before. Rust Bucket - while the interior of the ship was worn but in pretty good cosmetic shape the exterior was horribly rusty. Systems such as the Vacuum toilets also broke down repeatedly. Cabin - We booked a mini-suite. It was the size of a regular veranda cabin on some of the other lines we were on. The storage was ample and there was a nice sofa seating area, but calling it a mini-suite was quite an exaggeration. Fitness - the Gym equipment was insufficient for the crowd on board and there was often a long wait for treadmills and ellipticals. The classes were too crowded and unpleasant. The public rooms were inadequate for the crowd. There's only one real theater on the Grand Princess, but the staff had it offline for "rehearsals" and shuffled off the popular enrichment activities to venues way too small for the audience. The only bright spots on the cruise were the Hula and Ukulele instructors and the Naturalist and Forensic Lecturers. They made the cruise for us, otherwise we'd have disembarked at the first port and flown home. I must point out that the staff was uniformly courteous and friendly even when they were not empowered to fix anything. Out cabin attendant was fantastic. All in all, we had a great time, because we didn't let the problems with the cruise get to us, but we'll never cruise on Princess or any Carnival property again. We'll stick with Celebrity and Oceania. Possibly trying some of the other higher end cruise lines. Read Less
