We chose this cruise for the departure port and itinerary, but I wouldn’t change anything. The ship is older and doesn’t have all the wizz bang features of the new ships, but that’s not why you cruise to Alaska. I didn’t notice any maintenance issues or problems with cleanliness. No funny sewerage smells or problems with air conditioning. Our stateroom was always clean and very comfortable. The size was not massive, but more than enough considering the amount of time we spent outside our cabin. Overall the crew were very friendly and efficient. I agree with some of the comments about the buffet, but if you choose carefully you can still have a good meal every time. If you time your meals correctly there are virtually no queues and we always found a table. Remember there is another seating area towards the back of the ship on both sides. We chose traditional dining for dinner and were able to get a table for two after requesting it on the embarkation day. We had to share for the first night, but had our own table for the rest of the cruise. The menu is adequate and again with careful choices you can have a lovely meal every night. The Crown Grill was excellent. Great food and service. Alaska was amazing! We even saw the Northern Lights (on the departure out of Haines and only for about fifteen minutes). I would happily cruise on the Grand Princess again. We’re already planning to repeat this cruise with our kids in a couple of years. Read Less

The cruise was a bucket list item for us. It came highly recommended by many friends and family who had taken the same cruise. It was a great way to celebrate my retirement and our 30th wedding anniversary. It was everything we expected and more! We couldn't have asked for a better experience. The ship was certainly GRAND and beautiful. So many things to do and see on board. Our room was amazing, especially with a balcony. That will be the only way we cruise in the future. The room was always clean and taken care of. Our Steward was great. Our dining experiences were excellent with good food and really great staff! The service was very special and a favorite memory of our trip. Goals? See bald eagles, bears, whales, dolphins and, glaciers. Saw all of them during our excursions! Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C., were as beautiful as ever. Brought back memories of a trip I took with my grandparents in 1973. Fond memories for sure. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we made a deposit for our next future cruise! Not sure yet where it will take us but we're ready to do it again! Read Less

A cruise to Alaska was my dream trip! Even though the cruise ship was not over the top and you can tell it has some wear and tear, the destination was SPECTACULAR! DINING -- Roger Mora in anytime dining is the BEST waiter ever! You can take 2 bottles of wine per person and some water on board -- do it! It will save you lots of $$$$! Just uncork the wine before you go to dinner and you won't have to pay the corkage fee. :) The martini bar staff are hysterical! SHOPPING -- Don't get roped into the jewelry sales, these "used care salesman" are too much! Save your money! Make sure you load the app right away. There are specials that you can use the first day that no one tells you about, but they are on the app. Go to the shopping meeting in the theater to get special coupons and city maps. Don't forget to take your coupons with you to town! ONBOARD APP/INTERNET -- You can also use it to text each other on the ship for free. This was very helpful in keeping track of our group. The internet package is expensive and not really worth it. Unless you are a social media hound, don't bother paying the extra. I was so buy having fun, I didn't really use it. Plus, you can only use it on the ship. When you are in town, it doesn't work. I could have bought a roaming plan from AT&T for $80 less. ENTERTAINMENT -- Make sure you go see the comedians and shows, we were not disappointed! a nice surprise was the Escape Room -- it was a lot of fun -- even solving it with strangers! Be sure to watch the Wake Show - it has important info! PICTURES -- The easy disembark ramp usually has the picture opportunity, go early for the formal night (the photographers take breaks right at the busy time), do lots of poses and have fun! We took stick on mustaches for our formal night and that was the best one of them all! Beware of the picture package prices -- they are EXPENSIVE! Read Less

From our departure at the San Francisco Cruise Terminal, our embarkation was very smooth. Even though there was a line, the wait was very short. We live in the Bay Area so leaving from San Francisco was a plus for us. Overall, our entire 10 days were filled with a lot of beautiful memories. From our first meal which is having lunch on Deck 14 (Lido Deck) to disembarkation, our experience on this cruise is very memorable. We also chose to buy the unlimited photo package which gets you a USB filled with all of the digital photos taken every day from embarkation, shore excursion gangway photos, and other activities that we participated in. The Cruise Director, Steve did a wonderful job is keeping us busy. There was never a dull moment. I tell people that if they tell me they are bored in a Cruise, it is their fault. There is no excuse to say that one gets bored in a Princess Cruise. We chose Anytime Dining and we were able to meet a lot of other passengers. We will chose Anytime Dining again on our next cruise. The Chef (Joel Directo) of Grand Princess during our cruise is an award winning chef and he was also very funny during the Culinary Demonstration. All of the lunches and dinners that we ate were amazingly delicious. The entertainment and music is awesome. We bought the Rhapsody Trio CD and we played it immediately once we were home unpacking our suitcase. We can still visualize them playing as we were putting away our clothes and doing the laundry while listening to the CD. The broadway shows were 5 stars. We had Born to Dance which was a wonderful performance by 10 dancers and 4 singers. The magician/comedian that performed during our cruise were both awesome. In addition, we also had a singer/comedian, Steve Moris who is a regular at a lot of Princess Cruises. The waiters and bartenders were all very attentive and was always asking us what they can get us. I say that they served us above and beyond the usual. As for the shore excursions which we purchased through Princess Cruises, we went to all of them without any problems. Every excursion started on time and we are very happy and satisfied with the excursions that we signed up for. All of the tour guides were very friendly and very knowledgeable. We actually signed up for our next cruise already taking advantage of the onboard Princess Cruise offer. I can't forget to call special attention to all of the photographers who patiently took our photos every time we asked them. The results of our photos were professional quality. We went away with a ton of pictures and a lot of memories to remember this particular cruise over the years. Thanks Princess Cruises! Until our next cruise. Read Less

First time on Princess. It was ok but less than we expected. They do an ok job and the food was almost ok. Not sure if this was unique to our cruise or if this is the norm for Princess. Service however, was excellent and made the trip nice. Our main dinning wait staff was the best we have every had. Gee and King should be commended. Made it to the Sawyer glacier in Tracy Fjord. That was the highlight of the trip for sure. We are told getting that far is rare. What a beautiful sight it was. Purchasing ship photos was like shopping in a store run by teenagers waiting to get off work. They were lost and over their heads trying to answers questions they clearly hadn’t expected. We think that Princess was testing a new procedure. . . It didn’t work. We will return to Holland Amercia for our next cruise. I guess there is a cruise line for everyone and this one wasn’t our favorite. Read Less

We have never planned a vacation a year out. This one was special and we looked forward to celebrating our 15th Anniversary. I chose a mini-suite and two months prior to the cruise was offered the opportunity to upgrade to a suite. And I'm so glad we got the suite. A suite offers A LOT more space and some VIP perks including Club Class dining and access to a special lounge (the One-5). We slept with the sliding doors (two of them) open and listened to the wake being churned behind the ship. We awakened to the light of the day. It was awesome. Pretty much everything was GREAT about this experience. We needed this 10-day time to disconnect. We didn't use internet (and the crew joked about the expense of it, so why bother anyway). The two bad experiences - 1) There was a problem with the plumbing and a few times we found "sludge" that had backed up into our toilet. Yep, it was a little gross, but it nothing overflowed and everything was easily flushed. 2) The relaxing massage at the Lotus Spa was completely undone by them when they sat us in hard metal chairs and gave us a hard sell on products and services. This broke our trust as we felt robbed of the experience of relaxation and we didn't schedule with them again. The good experiences: The Suite was awesome and worth the price of the upgrade. It was wonderful and made us feel special being recognized by the second day of dining. Their ability to remember food and beverage preferences is uncanny. The bed is really, really comfortable. The food is tasty (it's not always warm and any style potato needs more salt, but it's otherwise tasty!) The entertainment was fun - there's enough variety that there's something for everyone. Allow yourself to enjoy cheesy fun and you'll have more fun. Ketchikan was a disappointment. It's just a tourist-trap of a cluster of shops. Get out beyond that and it's nicer. Our seaplane excursion was cancelled due to weather. We had a GREAT crab-feed, though. And as a not-quite-as-good substitute, we saw the lumberjack show - that was cheesy fun. Haines was beautiful and quiet. Juneau was interesting - we did the cultural center excursion and learned a lot. There isn't much to see, but what you do see is fantastic. Walk up from the main street of shops and you'll enjoy a little different culture than the tourist "stuff" you can get anywhere. Victoria was a short stop, too short. But Butchart Gardens was beautiful (and will be for months to come). We enjoyed this so much, we booked our next one. Read Less

We chose this cruise for our 20th wedding anniversary. The ship was a little difficult to navigate but only took a day or two to figure it out. We booked our cruise through a private agency and chose it primarily on the embarkation port as we did not want to fly. On our cruise we enjoyed the nightly shows, not great but entertaining, and spent time in the Crooners Bar. Ecko is funny and amazing, remembering our names and super friendly. We encountered a slight problem with the laundry facilities but the staff quickly fixed the problem and we were compensated appropriately. Our stateroom was neat and clean and the service was great! By far the highlight of the trip was Sharon and Nilo in the Botticelli Dining. I can’t say enough about them individually and together! The personal touch, the care when I got sea sick and the overall friendliness was way above our expectations! Please tell them we said hello! A few tidbits...the international coffee house is not the best for custom drinks but their pastries are fabulous. Don’t waste your time on the shipboard pizza...go to Anthony’s Pizza onboard, have a seat and enjoy a little piece of Italy! The steakhouse exceeded our expectations as well. The jewelry store onboard is a joke, unless you have $35,000 to spare on a ring. Lastly, take your uggs, you will live in them....amazing anniversary trip! Thanks Princess!! Read Less

We had never been to Alaska and heard many wonderful things about Alaska. It all was true. Absolutely beautiful! We did not do an excursion in San Francisco since we had been there on a previous cruise. We arrived at the cruise dock via Princess Shuttle service, all went well, Princess representatives met us at the Airport and provided luggage Smart Carts. Embarkation was efficient and timely. The ships new carpeting looks very nice . We did the opportunity to upgrade to a Club Class Mini Suite, which included Club Class Dining. It was delicious. The head waiter made omelettes every morning for breakfast. At lunch and dinner he made a different pasta dish. On some evenings there was a extra dinner made (we had lobster thermidor). He also made cherries jubilee and bananas foster. You could at any time order from the menu. Service was immediate and excellent. We attended a few shows. The comedian guitarist was enjoyable. We have seen a lot of the production shows, so did not attend many of them. Ports and Excursions Ketchikan - We were in port from 8am till 5pm. Nice clean port. we did the Duck Tour and the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. The Duck Tour was the better of the two. Had lunch and plenty of time to walk about town. Haines - We were in port from 1pm till 10pm. This is far to much time to be a port that does not have much to do. There is complimentary shuttle service that dropped us off at the Raptor Center, but did not return to pick us up. We asked the driver back at port why he did not stop to get us, he indicated there were too many passengers at the port and he could only go from the port to the visitor center and did not have time to make the other 4-5 stops. The Grand was the only ship docked in Haines that day. From the port we walked to a very nice distillery that served drinks in a very casual deck setting. That was the highlight of Haines. Juneau - We were in port from 8:30am till 10pm. We did whale watching (saw about 8 whales) in the morning and the helicopter glacier walk about in the afternoon. The glacier experience is an amazing experience. Definitely worth the money. Victoria, BC - We were in port from 7am till 2pm. In Victoria we prearranged a pick up with Victoria Pedicabs. We were picked up a the cruise port and could be dropped off in town if you wanted to. Alan was a fabulous guide he was very knowledgeable about his town. Would highly recommend Alan with Victoria Pedicabs. Disembarkment was very easy and did not take much time at all. We went through Customs quickly. Read Less

We chose this particular sailing because we wanted to have the ease of leaving from San Francisco (again) on a familiar ship and we wanted to visit Hubbard Glacier, which was everything we had hoped for, and Haines, a beautiful little Alaskan town. We like the Grand Princess even though an older ship because the staff is pleasant and we like the Princess cultural programs and activities such as the Captain's champagne waterfall and Captain's Cocktail Party for previous cruisers. We like the food, the service and often the entertainment--the party band on this cruise was very good (Fee Fee and the Sentiments) and the Naturalist, Tess Juliana, is excellent. We had a 12th floor aft balcony so it is convenient to the buffet and has a covered balcony. On this trip we had trouble with our room thermostat, but we finally had it completely replaced. We started asking our steward on the second or third day and an electrician came twice. We ended up going to the front desk after several days and a supervisor verified that it needed fixing, then it worked properly. We requested and hand held shower attachment and it was waiting for us when we got on board. We were gifted two specialty restaurant dinners from our travel agent so ate in Sabatini's for my husband's birthday and it was wonderful. The food in the Crown grill was very good but it was much more crowded, so I preferred Sabatini's. Going North along the coast toward Alaska the seas were pretty rough the entire first night, enough to wake me up, but after that we never had much rocking. The scenery and weather on this trip were absolutely wonderful. We went to Juneau and then Hubbard Glacier first, then Haines and Ketchikan, ending in Victoria before heading home. Read Less

This was our 25th cruise, 5th on Princess and 3rd on the Grand Princess. My wife and I have cruised all the major mass market cruise lines, Carnival, Princess, HAL, Norwegian, RCCL and Celebrity. We cruise just to be on the ship, not for ports or itineraries. We enjoy relaxing, reading, looking out at the ocean, entertainment and good food. We are basically cruise potatoes. I provide this information just so you know where this review is coming from. As stated, this was our 3rd time on the Grand Princess and she had just come out of dry dock, which basically was done to electronically equip her for their Medallion service. There was some changes of carpeting and some cosmetic sprucing but really not a distinctive noticeable change since the last time we sailed on her, other than the mailboxes outside the rooms were gone. My problem with Princess as a whole is with their stateroom size. We typically book an oceanview cabin (picture window) and their oceanview rooms are among the tiniest of any of the mass market cruise lines (ditto their bathrooms). They seem to be competing with Norwegian for who can have the tiniest oceanview staterooms. Sometimes we get a balcony (we didn't this time) and those are also smaller than most standard balconies. We knew this going in, so it was expected and was not a surprise. What was a surprise was our oceanview stateroom was even tinier than normal. I'll get to that later. The other negative surprise is that the food, particularly the buffet food, has gone down in quality (and choices) from when we last sailed this ship. It went from sometimes mediocre to now, mediocre at its best. The MDR menu has, as do most cruise lines, one side of standard choices that never change and the other side of the specialty options for that particular evening. The standard fare usually consists of a meat dish (typically a steak of some kind), a chicken dish and a seafood dish. The daily change entrees usually consists of different fancy or gourmet dishes. On their standard side of the menu, the dinner meat option is now a hamburger and fries. How classy can you get??? It seems like they are trying to go cheap on the food wherever they can. We did eat at the Crown Grill one night, their extra fee specialty restaurant and I had one of the best filet mignons I have ever had but you have to pay extra to get that. So why did I give this ship 4 stars? Because we had possibly the most fun on this cruise ever. Every single one of the staff we encountered could not have been nicer. They bent over backwards to do what they could to make sure you had a great time.Friendly and accommodating to the extreme. While the food has deteriorated the entertainment and cruise activities have improved. Kevin, the cruise director, was the best cruise director we have had in 25 cruises. he obviously loves his job and it shows. Ditto for his assistant, Martin, who ran many of the activities and has a great sense of humor and fun. We got more involved in the activities on this ship than we usually do just because the entertainment crew were so personable and so much fun to be with. My wife and I enjoy production shows with singing and dancing, costume changes and set changes. The singers and dancers in the main theater were outstanding and fun to watch. Loved the costumes and sets. There were four production shows, The last one, Born to Dance, is a show that Princess commissioned Steven Schwartz to produce for them. It is, as you might suspect, a showcase for the dancers. It is absolutely the best production/dancing show I have ever seen, and I have seen it four times now. The choreography is just phenomenal. There was a lounge act, Fee Fee and the Sentimentals, two female sings and a 4 piece combo band that were just great. It was hard to not want to dance when they played. Their shows were usually packed. Aside from the usual trivia and Karaoke game activities. they had some unique fun and funny game shows that we really enjoyed. So while the food quality went down, the entertainment quality, which was already high, went up. Now, for my cabin surprise. I supposedly had an upgraded oceanview cabin on midship Plaza deck. As stated Princess cabins are small. Normally, there oceanview cabin consists of a bed or beds (depending upon whether you request twin bed or queen size) pushed up against the back wall where the window is. There is a night stand on each side of the bed, if you have it configured as queen or two nightstands in between the two twin beds. That takes up the whole width of the room. Across from the bed is a desk with a mirror, a refrigerator built in at one end of the desk, some shelving above and that is it. On the other side of the wall the desk is mounted to is a closet, some shelving for clothes, a shelf safe and the tiny bathroom. The first thing I noticed when we entered the room, is there was only one nightstand (which also holds the reading lamp). It was on the side my wife traditionally sleeps on and she is also an avid reader. I have a CPAP machine. Without a nightstand, my only option was to place it on the floor. I copntacted my room steward who told me the room WAS TOO NARROW to place a second nightstand in there. I had been in an oceanview room on Princess before and had two nightstands and told him so. He said that the other oceanview rooms had two nightstands except for the room I was in and the one next too mine. They were a little more narrow that their already narrow oceanview rooms. He said he would talk with his supervisor to see what could be done. He later brought in a cardboard carton for me to use as a nightstand to solve the problem although I still had no reading light. So except for a cardboard nightstand and dummying down on the food, we had a great cruise on the Grand. Would I sail her again? Probably, if the incentive package was right but I would be very careful about my room. Alaska is drop dead gorgeous and even though we do not cruise for ports or itineraries, Alaska cruise are among our favorites. Read Less

This is our fifth cruise on this particular ship. Grand Princess is one of our favorite ships for the following reasons (in no particular order): WRAP AROUND PROMENADE - We walk around the promenade daily for exercise, and later, for digestion. COVERED POOL AND CONSERVATORY - The ping pong tables are actually usable, without wind tunnel. The shared puzzle area is out of the way. The covered pool is nice place when weather is too hot or cold for us in the open air pool. NICE GYM PLACEMENT - The gym machines look out from the 15th level. Noted many more cruisers utilizing gym than on previous cruises. Always full with very little trickling-off as cruise neared end. Nice view. Going to be sorry to see this ship move. Add to that: SAN FRANCISCO HOME PORT - Convenient home port with round trip cruises. BEST EMBARK/DEBARK EXPERIENCE - New Pier 27 is one of the best with always friendly, efficient staff. Many things to like in food service as well. This was one of the best cruise experiences we have had: Food and service in Davinci MDR was wonderful. I heeded our waiters' (Norman) recommendations for the most part and we were never disappointed by the food flavor. Norman was attentive and entertaining. My fall-back is the always good, daily available salmon, if the nights menu items are unappealing. I found the food in MDR better than the Crown Grill experience we had one time on this cruise. We were fortunate to have wonderful dinner-mates at our table-for-eight. We visited the buffet for breakfast and lunch. I ordered omelets daily and they were done well each time with a generous amount of ingredients. We have, on past cruises, found MDR breakfast better than the Buffet. This time we ate breakfast in the buffet, exclusively. The bacon was mostly crispy...a plus. We ate lunch at venues throughout the ship. The soups were a favorite. The ship is getting old, no doubt. However, everything worked for us. Even the hinges in our cabin were silent. I get up earlier than my spouse, generally getting out for exercise and fresh air between 5 and 6. I never woke my spouse on these early exits from the cabin. Also, noted the upholstery in places was new...particularly in the Vista Lounge. New plastic, green chairs in the open air pool area are more comfortable than the wicker ones in the covered pool area. One glitch happened with the propulsion system encountered a problem that delayed out approach to Ensenada. The 30 minute delay was unnoticeable. The ship stayed an additional hour in port to accommodate those going ashore. We use internet sparingly. Internet service seemed better this trip. Of course, can't be compared to home wifi. Service dropped once in 10 uses. Took one Princess tour from Hilo. Nice experience there. We generally do our own thing, having used near port, car rental services in the past. Stayed on the ship in Ensenada. Overall...very pleasant cruise. Read Less

This was our first cruise and Wow what a cruise. We flew into San Francisco from Florida a couple of nights before the cruise. We stayed near Fisherman's Wharf which made it very easy the morning of the cruise to get to the port. We went through security which was so easy (nothing like the airport). The Embarkation process was smooth as well. We were not able to settler into our rooms for about an hour though, which was okay because we were entertained, fed and were able to have a drink and watch us take sail. How beautiful going under the Golden Gate Bridge. Amazing experience. Our Stateroom was perfect for us. We had a balcony and can not imagine going on a cruise without one. Waking up to the amazing scenery and hearing the ocean at night was scerene. Dennis our Steward took such good care of us. We didn't want for anything. There were choreographed shows, piano pain, folk singer, bingo, trivia, karaoke, amongst so many other fun events. Kevin our cruise director and his great team kept us entertained. Joey the "Piano man" is so very talented. The dining in all the dining rooms were delicious. However the Horizon Court buffet had variety but everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner were bland. The baked goods were dry and tasteless. There are two pizzarias the first is on the Lido deck pool side that is pizza under hot lamps and taste like pizza under hot lamps. The second pizzaria on deck 7 with a brick oven and freshly backed looked and smelt delicious. Getting a seat was impossible (they were always busy) and you have to be sitting in the dining room to order from them. It would be nice if there was a to go option. The International fast food had a limited variety. the sandwiches and salads were good but baked goods were dry. Coffee was great though. The Crown grill was very good and Sabitini's was superb. The shore excursions were so wonderful. We had a great time. The train ride to the Yukon in Skagway was filled with scenery from a picture. This was our favorite excursions. My husband and I prepaid as much as possible including gratuities and gave additional grattuities as we thought individuals deserved. You can also prepay Excursions, photos, drink packages (which I suggest). Even pre-pay for ship spending. Next time I would pre pay ship spending. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the experience and just the need to see some warm weather. This ship was fresh out of dry dock, which was used as an excuse for everything that was WRONG with the ship. Usually when something is in for refresh, repair, or general maintenance, it should come out fully functional and complete. Not so with this ship. Several cabins didn’t even have hot water for most of the cruise. There were issues just about every where on the ship. From bathroom plumbing, lights flickering, ceiling tiles sagging, and much more. Was it a total mess? Not really. The ship overall was pretty decent, but it really should have been so much more. Food - generally, the food was average. It is surprising they don’t have more Mexican food on a Mexican cruise. Easiest way to get people in the mood of where they are going is through their stomach. Service varied depending on whether or not a supervisor was nearby. Amazing service usually meant there was at least one supervisor within eyeshot. There were times we would watch the waiter ask people all around us if they needed anything and skip us. And the reaction I’d get when I ordered just a soda was one of annoyance. Movie under the stars - This iMax movie experience is actually pretty nice. A throw back to the drive in theatre. One complaint I tend to have about entertainment on most cruises is they tend to be very short. Went to a trivia show and it lasted about 25 minutes. Music acts would go for 30-45 minutes and then quit. And why do DJ’s play the same 5 songs throughout a cruise? Really can only listen to the Cupid Shuffle so many times before you get really tired of it. Read Less

I would take this cruise again. Shows and onboard entertainment were very giood, staff were very friendly and helpful wherever we went. The ship is showing its age, but this did not detract from the experience. Variety and quality of food, especially in the dining room was top notch. Crown Grill food and service was exceptional. We used the fitness centers extensively and jogged around the promenade deck at 3 revolutions to the mile. Itinerary was good with six sea days and four port days. A good mix of passengers was on this cruise. We did enjoy the onboard shopping and port shopping. Only negative of the ship was the entertainment; the atrium piano player who sang show tunes, was okay for a while, but he then became overpowering and annoying. Also, we wish there was a venue of performers that sang/performed other types of music, like jazz or blues. We dined in the DaVinci dining hall and thoroughly enjoyed our waiter Heuerto and assistant waiter, Evalinda. The variety of menu options was good and suggestions from wait staff were on target with our culinary desires. We did not take any excursions offered by the cruise line but chose to go off and choose our own. The groups were smaller and we could tell tour guide exactly where and what we wished to tour, plus it was less expensive. Overall, the cruise was enjoyable. Read Less

Princess has the fastest embarkation of any cruise line. No wait, walked right on. Great balcony room. Tv programming needs work. Helpful staff. Princess patter was loaded with activities for seniors. Don’t miss sea adventure tour in Puerto Vallarta with speed boat, horseback riding to waterfall, snorkeling and beach relaxing with tour guide Ceasar!! Awesome! Ship headed for much needed refurbishment in spring 2019. Also visited Manzillo, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlán. Also did Salsa and salsa and it was better than I expected! You won’t miss anything if you don’t get off the boat in Manzillo. We did a tour in Cabo through Princess, will definitely arrange something on my own next time! So many options, it’s a true tourist town. If buying Mexican blankets do it in Cabo where you could get 2 for $10. My husband and I traveled alone and wished that there were activities geared for Gen Xers. Visit large hot tubs at rear of ship for privacy and views. Read Less

Booked an interior room less than a week before embarkation. This was our fourth time on this ship and first time ever in an interior cabin. Found the cabin adequate for a ten day cruise to a warm weather destination. We spent very little time in the cabin, pausing there only to take care of the necessities like sleep, dress, shower, etc. Room was quiet and Steward Dennis did a fine job taking care of the cabin in our absence. The Lido deck cabin was steps from the outside pool and hot tub. A few steps more took us to the Conservatory which is why this ship is one of our favorite. The covered Calypso pool and bar means we can swim, "hot-tub", work a puzzle, and/or play ping pong in a covered area. These areas along with the Horizon Court and aft portion of the ship make four distinct areas to enjoy breakfast and lunch. Service was wonderful. Speaking of food. We were initially assigned Anytime Dining (AD) being 30 on the wait list for early Traditional Dining (TD). We walked directly to the Mater D. and asked of early TD. We took our first meal in AD and were assigned Traditional, thereafter. Our waiters were superb and knowledgeable. We often followed their recommendations. Food was excellent. We found the entertainment to be excellent. The Magician show was fun, Todd Adamson was a wonderful singer, and the band was good. The dancers were some of the best I've seen. Todd sang a wonderful duet with one of the women singers (Megan) for his second act in the Vista Lounge. The Cruise Director had a great lineup. The San Francisco Cruise Port is the best. Staff is great. Embark and Debark processes were highly organized. Easy on; easy off. Great experience. Fin. Read Less

I am not an experienced cruise customer. Only 1 other cruise and that was over 2 years ago. However, several friends wanted to take the cruise, so we booked a mini-suite. Embarkation went very smoothly. Disembarkation was very slow with no explanation given for the 1 hour delay. The cabin was ok. Sufficient room and storage. A little worn. Bathroom tiles worn and stained. Grout was failing. Cabin steward was very good. Food was slightly disappointing.. Entrees ranged from marginal to adequate to excellent. Specialty dining was very good. Many parts of the ship were well worn. A prime example was the widespread rust throughout the exterior. Entertainment was adequate. A good mix of different styles. Activities were somewhat limited unless you happened to be a trivia buff. On the other hand, virtually all the staff were exceptional. Polite, efficient, courteous, and helpful. Not so much with the ship's officers, however. They were aloof and at times dismissive. But I will never cruise with Princess again. The fare for the 2 of us was just under $10,000 and it included a $300 credit for our cabin which was clearly noted on the booking documentation that was sent to us. However, the credit did not appear on our account. Princess refused to honor the credit telling us that we had the responsibility to resolve the issue with our travel agent. Are you kidding me? We spend almost $10,000 and they can't fix the problem between them and the agent? The customer service desk did send a message to the main office, which failed to help, but then never contacted us with a response. Gotta be a better cruise company out there. Read Less

Princess has lowered its standards and we have lowered our expectations! The Grand is a grand OLD ship. Took same cruise last year. Engineers working on all parts of ship every deck every day! It shows it, and rumors are it is being sold. That aside and the ship being freezing, we had a good time. You can make a good time no matter! -The entertainment was excellent. -The dining room and food was good. -Steak house was great. -Alfredo’s pizza great. -Buffet was very good, but finding a seat was a bear. Seems that on this cruise the people sat and socialized at buffet tables! Only real complaint was amount of very small(less than two years)kids in pool. They were NOT sanitary and deck staff said the were told not to say anything!! If you want a good cruise, Princess still gives you a “good” Cruise. Just SKIP the Grand. Read Less

We have done over 30 cruises, 28 on Princess. The ship and staff are outstanding. We loved the charm of the ship even though it is showing some signs of wear and tear (Princess Theater seats need to be reupholstered.) Club Class meals were a highlight. The food and service were outstanding. Every night Giovanni, the Head Waiter, made a special dish. We had seen all of the shows so we did Movies under the Stars and saw a couple of comedians which we enjoyed. Sit away from where food is being prepared which can impact hearing a movie. The Club Class Minisuite was comfortable with a wonderful bed. The room was extremely well-maintained. The lecturers were outstanding especially the series on a Route 66. We love everything about Club Class. We never had to wait and our waiters (Edgar and Alvin were amazing!) The gym was well-maintained with some updated equipment, Especially nice was the international appeal of the cruise. The vast majority of passengers were from the US, China and Canada. The only minor downside was we have seen all of the shows multiple times. The6 need some new ones. Read Less

We love the Grand Princess. It's getting a bit old but for some fleets, it is a perfect ship. The ship is still rather large but it's also small enough that you can easily find your way to anywhere you need to get to. I love Desk 5 and the Piazza area. The international cafe and coffee bar is fantastic. Alvin, Sonny, Lala and others really take care of your coffee needs. The pastries/desserts and sandwich area is always packed with delights to satisfy your cravings. Alfredo's pizzeria is the best on the ship. They even made a gluten free pizza for my wife and baked in a separate oven to avoid cross contamination. Our favorite dining room, the Michelangelo is on Deck 5 with the Da Vinci on deck 6. Both are the same as they share the same kitchen and the wait staff went out of their way to ensure my wife had a pleasant voyage with her food allergy. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we were interested in the itinerary and we had had a great previous experience with Princess on the Ruby. Overall, this felt like a budget cruise. Some of the entertainment was not the quality we expected of Princess, and the menu in the dining room was somewhat limited, and not the quality We expected. This ship is 20 years old, and it shows. The elevators were dicy and really slow, and pretty rough inside. The ship showed a lot of rust overall. We very much enjoyed the shore excursions, but the onboard experience was only average, and low average at that. The cabin was comfortable but worn. The plumbing fixtures didn't operate smoothly and appeared very old. The couch was worn and stained, and the furniture on our balcony was pretty used up. Based on this cruise, I would choose another cruise line for my next adventure. Read Less

Princess has it right on Embarkation and Disembarkation. Smooth process proved to be one of the best. The ship is older and void of all the exciting pastimes of newer ships but full of traditional pastimes for older passengers. Cabin service was so exceptional that any flaws in furnishings was not noticed. Wow service for sure there! Food was exceptional in all aspects..better than any other cruise line I have experienced. Dining service was exceptional as well. Entertainment left a little to be desired. Needed more productions, more seating and better entertainers...something more breathtaking like "arial" acts, and such. Found myself bored at certain times, but mainly because of the weather and lack of other exciting activities. Not just gambling. Service everywhere was exceptional and I loved the staff. Only a couple of issues there, not worth mentioning. The Islands were awesome, economical and interesting. Less expensive than Ensenada, Mexico (who had ridiculously high prices) and no bargaining. One fan for $7.....really!!!! Don't even get off at that port. The cruise was rough sailing but we never got sick so hats off to Prncess! We would recommend but would not go again. Read Less

Another winning itinerary leaving from our local port of San Francisco. Despite the traffic, we were able to get to the ship before 1 pm and watch a good portion of the Fleet Week air show from our balcony! What a treat to have a glass of champagne and watch remarkably skilled pilots. While we only had two full sea days, we had to be more conscientious of what we chose to do--or NOT do. We had an excellently restful week. A shorter day than we would have liked in Astoria, and it seemed even shorter in Victoria, but gorgeous weather at all four ports. The lovely long day in Seattle allowed us to take the ferry to Bainbridge Island and allow my husband to play golf for the day. Sadly, his work intervened and we stayed onboard for Vancouver, but enjoyed the sites visible from deck. For first timers on the Grand, yes, she is an older ship, but comfortable and newly updated a year ago after being in dry dock. The Grill and Sabatini's are great celebration venues, and the menus are updated from last year. This time I took the opportunity to have afternoon tea in our cabin, which allowed us to enjoy it without being rushed. It was much better than having it in the DaVinci dining room. The comedian and magician were both stellar with multiple shows. And you can choose to do a little, alot, or nothing at all. For a week long excursion this was well worth our money! Read Less
