Princess was our favorite cruise line and we have taken 29 cruises and spent about 350 days on board their ships. Over the years we have noticed the little cuts but since we have not been on Princess for about 2 years we had an eye opening experience on this 26 day transpacific cruise. They have cut everything from the crew to toothpicks and mints after dinner to the size of the plates at the buffet. The Golden Princess is falling apart. There are water leaks coming from the ceilings of the public hallways and other places around the ship. There is also a significant odor of mold in some areas of the ship. The furnishings are in desperate need of replacing with seats in the theater that are too bent to sit in to tables and chairs in the rooms being broken. The mattresses in our mini suite were so bad that it was hard to get a good nights sleep. I know that they are transferring it to P&O but that is not for another year. On the first day of the cruise I reported that the water temperature control in our bathroom did not work. They sent someone who made an adjustment but it still did not work. I continuously reported it and when I got off the ship 26 days later it still did not work. Dining – the food presentation was good but there was no flavor in any of the food. Some of the dinners that were served in the dining room were uneatable. If you have cruised with Princess in the past you remember the “Always Available “side of the menu. Well they have cut the main courses to just one chicken dish and salmon. The salmon is not so good and the chicken was a dried out chicken breast that tasted like it was cooked the day before and some hot gravy put on it. The buffet has cut the size of the plates I guess to keep you from taking too much. Food choices at the buffet are very limited. Food was sometimes ok and sometimes not so good. The cuts do not stop there- While the production shows were well done they are the same ones that they have had for over a decade and the guest entertainment was so-so. Game shows were scheduled to conflict with the 2nd seating so that even if you rushed through dinner you could not get a seat in the lounge for a game show. This is something we never noticed before but since they changed the early dining tome to 5pm we took the 2nd seating at 7:15pm. We have cruised on most of the cruise lines and we used to always come back to Princess but they just have not kept up with their competition. Read Less

If this is now Princess new standard for service and food then we will not be sailing with them again The dinning room (anytime dinning) staff were untrained and far to few in numbers to give good service if you asked for a fresh HOT pot of tea often you were told there is still tea in the pot its OK drink it ,The choice of meals was very poor and repeated ever few days. We have traveled on Princess many times before and never had this bad of service and meal choice The music was played so loud through out the venues that it was uncomfortable even with my hearing aids OUT The ship was in good condition and the staff in the cafe especially April were the best trained on the ship there you could get HOT coffee and tea as well as snacks . the disembarkation was very smooth I booked the Flight ,hotel and transfers through Princess this all went very smoothly so I can recommend this I have another cruise booked in October 2020 with Princess but if this is there new standard I will give serious consideration to cancelling this and book with another line Read Less

This cruise was a good price and left Vancouver which is is close to where we live in Edmonton. We always wanted to see Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. This cruise was nice because a previous cruise did not allow us to see Victoria because of the rain and wind. Emarkation was effortless. If only service on land was this smooth. We had fabulous weather and calm seas throughout. San Francisco was warm enough and we saw Sausalito as well as Alcatraz. Alcatraz is not to be missed. On to Hilo and Honolulu. Didn't take excursions because we have been there before. Walked and took the shuttle to various venues. Sometimes you see more just by walking than just driving around. Bora Bora is small but beautiful and rural. Refreshing to see that. Walked around and saw how the locals live. Tahiti was very beautiful and Papeete much larger and more of a modern city. Moorea, a ferry boat away, is even more beautiful. American Samoa was very lovely and the people are incredibly friendly. We were like rock stars! The Samoans are not to be fooled with. They are huge and what they eat in a day is what I would eat in 3. Interestingly, they are US citizens but can't vote. Auckland was fabulous. What a clean, well run city. No thugs downtown that I saw. Well dressed, well behaved, extremely friendly, happy. Loved it. Nice, as Canadians to have another currency worth less than the Canadian dollar. The cruise ended in Auckland but we flew to Brisbane and enjoyed that city very much as well. Another very beautiful and well run city. Clean and scenic. Golden Princess. One of the "shopping cart" ships because of Skywalkers Lounge. Ship shows very well for her age. She was refurbished in April 2018 and was up to snuff. The ship is sold to P & O cruises in April 2020. Our cabin was an MB mini suite. Love the extra room, sofa, 2 tvs, and the bathtub. On a longer cruise was so nice to have the extra space for storage and lounging. The bathtub makes the bathroom larger and gives more space for everything. We each get a nice glass of champagne on departure. Because we are Elite, and because techincally it is 2 cruises, we got the 2 mini bar setups, the 650 free internet minutes, and free laundry. Great perks on a long 23 day cruise. We had the late sitting for dinner. Best waiter, assistant waiter, and head waiter of all my cruises. Chris the waiter, Nathaniel the assistant and Constantin the head waiter. Superb service and timing. They always remembered the little things, lemon in the water, the buns with the seeds, our names, and so attentive. Top notch in any restaurant in the world. Entertainment was the best we have ever had and the cruise director and his assistants were great. Funny, witty, smooth, professional, and excellent. Service was great. The odd time the romm service in the morning forgot the odd item but nothing to complain about. They were so pleasant. Met some great people on the ship. Always meet new friends and enjoy life's memories. Read Less

This was a back to back cruise at the end of the Alaska season for the Golden Princess. We left Vancouver for Ketchikan, back to Vancouver, then sailed on to Victoria and San Francisco in a second 3 day cruise. End of season cruises are the best! After spending months on the Alaska run, the crew was heading to Hawaii and then on to Australia and they were in high spirits. The entertainment crew was able to shed their Alaska lumberjack costumes for Hawaiian shirts. Because these were short cruises (4 day and then 3 day) the schedule was packed with activities. It was a delightful experience on this lovely ship. The Golden is an older ship with a passenger capacity under 3000. It has been refurbished and was in really excellent condition even after months on the family-packed Alaska itinerary. It has a lovely atrium around which there are numerous restaurants and bars. The lower floor Vines is a favorite and this one did not disappoint with an excellent selection of wines and superior service. Don't miss the wine and chocolate pairing. This level also has the International Cafe that offers a selection of included sandwiches, soup, salads and desserts in addition to a full bar and coffees. Upstairs is Crooners bar that was always busy and featured a good piano player. From Crooners, one wanders toward the back of the ship to the Explorers Lounge with a stage and frequent entertainment then the Wheelhouse bar for quieter enjoyment and finally on to the Vista Lounge. Centrally located are the Italian Restaurant and Steak House that are available for a small additional charge. Not being red meat fans, we chose the Italian restaurant and found the food and service to be excellent, well worth the extra charge. This ship had a really excellent wine list and we were able to enjoy a favorite bottle of Central California red wine with our dinner at a very reasonable price. For daily dining, we always choose seated dining at a large table. The crew has a talent for seating a together a group of compatible people and this trip was no exception. The food and service were excellent and so was the company. I can't say enough for the entertainment and activities. The entertainment staff went above and beyond. There was daily Zumba and tai chi plus trivia and an ever changing schedule of challenges ranging from Passenger Feud to Moose Racing to an egg drop that challenged passengers to create a device that would prevent a raw egg from breaking when dropped from two stories up to the atrium floor. I came home with a nice Princess water bottle and wine bottle stopper for participating and I had a great time doing it. On both legs the captain sponsored a champagne waterfall in the atrium with ample champagne for the passengers. The pool deck is inviting and was not crowded. This ship has an open pool area and also a covered pool that was more used in the cool and wet Alaska weather we encountered. There was simply too much fun to be had below decks for us to make much use of it. Service was excellent across the board. It always amazes that crew can remember you and your preferences with ever changing passengers. This ship was especially good. Our dining room waiter worked in the anytime dining room for breakfast and lunch and always came over to say hello. The bartenders in Vines and Skywalkers remembered us and our drink preferences and were always ready with beverages and conversation. Our cabin attendants were excellent. Even though we did not select these cruises for the ports and shore excursions, Vancouver proved to be better than we could possibly have expected. We did a Fraser Valley Wine Tour that was really excellent. Who knew? These Canadian wines are not readily available in the US and they are excellent. We also very much enjoyed Granville Island where we did a brief pre-cruise stay. Overall, this was an absolutely terrific week and we look forward to doing it again next year! Read Less

My father died during the cruise and I needed to amend my travel arrangements. The front desk staff were terrible and it took over 3 days to sort new departure arrangements. I received conflicting information from onboard Front desk staff and onshore Princess staff. Princess gave no credit for existing return flight and I had to pay for a new full fare that was exchanged from Aust$ to US$ to NZ$. The air carrier advised my family that Princess as travel agent had full discretion in making no or little penalty charges to travel. No discretion was applied. I would not recommend Princess on this basis. There was relentless onboard promotion for buying jewellery (Effy) and artworks which was tedious. Food was good and plentiful, entertainment was a bit ho hum - one comedian was absolutely dreadful and the second relied on old hack and tired women-as stupid content. There were two production shows which were excellent. Musicians played similar and in a lot of cases the same songs (how many times can you listen to Hey Jude?!) Onboard activities were limited with the same things recycled through the cruise - movies (same movies returned too frequently); bingo; quizzes (I'm a quiz fan but the same format and type of questions were used across three quiz events, and the events were bumped in face of venue conflict); demonstrations such as cocktail making was view only. Cards as an activity was good (bridge; 500) as there were a fair number of people interested therefore plenty of opportunity to play. However this was organised by participants. I feel entertainment staff often opted out of organising activities, so it dependent on participants to get things going. Venues appeared to be mismanaged in that the act and or audience size wasn't appropriate to the particular venue used. Enrichment activities were limited to forensic topics (potentially good however presenter was poor and used promotional material as evidence) and others were directly linked to the sale of jewellery and artworks. Did two excursions - whole day Moorea swimming and snorkeling which was excellent and the LA Venice Beach and Santa Monica visits. Definitely wouldn't recommend Venice Beach as a destination (old; tired; dirty; broken; grotty) but Santa Monica was nice to walk around (shops; pier; beach) Read Less

We chose this particular cruise as we both enjoy Sea days and the cruise experience. This particular cruise from Auckland to Vancouver had plenty of these with only six ports. Time seemed to fly by, with all the activities going on. The crew and staff were friendly and welcoming. Activities were varied and plentiful should we wish to take part. And the food .well that was great! We chose often to go more casual dining in the horizon or indeed catch a movie and have pizza. But we also went formal to anytime dining, in the dining rooms available to us, whereby the waiters would be friendly and helpful. We had a back to back cruise so continued on to Alaska, we found that the leg from LA to Vancouver changed the dynamics of the passengers as many left in LA and others came on for a short cruise to Vancouver, then new people joint the ship for Alaska, which changed again, so this was a new experience for us. However, this did not deter from a great trip Read Less

The ship is in very poor condition though and they are not doing anything to fix it up There was water leaking all over the ship and a very bad smell of mould. The food in the buffet was always the same and not very good. The ports were very nice and the crew is very good. The cruise director was one of the best we have had on a cruise. All his staff were very good and easy to talk to. They should try to have more to do though on sea days as it was quite boring though some people love sea days I do not. We really loved New Zealand and Tahiti and that made the long sea days worth the wait. We really love Princess cruises and was disappointed on the very poor condition of the Golden princess. The embarkation experience in Sydney was probably our worst experience of embarkation on any cruise. There seemed to be no organisation, and the only guidance was by other passengers, as there seemed to be a great lack of staff around. When we chose this cruise we knew that there were a lot of sea days ahead of us, so we were prepared to entertain ourselves for long stretches of time. While they had many activities, there could have been more variety. We enjoyed the ports as we had not been to most of them. The shore excursions were way too expensive for us, so we were able to find local providers at almost all ports. Some ports were a little overrated, such as Los Angeles, where the ship docked at San Pedro and with a 3.00pm all aboard deadline, there was not sufficient time to get into LA and see anything and return in time. The dining was very good, accommodating my dietary requirements. There did seem to be less general variety in the buffet compared to other cruises we have been on. The wait staff were to be highly commended, as were all the staff onboard - friendly and helpful and dedicated to ensuring everyone had a great experience. The entertainment was mostly quite good, but not as spectacular as we had experienced on other cruises. The other passengers were respectful and well behaved, with no loud noise to interrupt a peaceful night's sleep. The bed was super comfy - it felt like a cosy nest. It was great to be part of the Cruise Critic Roll Call, so we were able to arrange some activities together to get to know others. All in all it was a great cruise where we met a lot of likeminded people. Read Less

We went on this cruise because of the ports visited. We were on the ship for 28 days. My husband and I have been on 50 cruises and have never been so disgusted with a cruise line. It is now on the bottom of my rating list. Ship leaked badly, very rude and arrogant crew. No customer service. Food bad. Dining room staff impossible. Cabin location(mini-suite) where 6 decks and bridge above could look on your balcony. Entertainment venue was always full 1 hour before entertainment began. If you were not there early you stood or sat on the floor in the aisle. Not perks for Captain's Circle members. Tv in cabin had no programming for account, movies, remote very limited. On the docks the crew members would rush off to get the ground transportation before paying passengers. No representative on the docks for Princess to answer questions. Please think carefully before going on the ship. Read Less

Ship is old, Horizon Buffet lacks variety and food tasteless, main theater much too small to accommodate the passengers, poor management such as running out of specific wines at the bar, plumbing and water system had problems, although dining room food was good the menu selections weren’t....ship needs to be retired. For a repositioning Cruise they did not offer afternoon entertainment or lectures as other cruise lines do. The Golden Princess biggest asset was their crew. They were professional, polite and very accommodating...with a few exceptions. Did not take any ships tours, so cannot comment. We choose this cruise solely based on it's itinerary. We had read previous poor reviews about this ship but Princess stated that all had been corrected. They lied. There are still garbage smells in public areas. Outside aft elevator lobby on 7th deck for one. There are still mild smells in corridors throughout the ship.Problems started with embarkation. There was only one person taking in baggage. He would fill a cart, disappear for awhile to unload the cart and then return to start the process over again. This took forever with only one person. Once aboard we then observed many unsatisfying problems. The bird poop on our balcony furniture was disgusting and made us avoid meals there. There are only 2 aft elevators reaching the 17th deck. One was inoperative for the first week of the cruise. The moving stairway from the 17th deck to Skywalker lounge operated one day of the 20 day cruise. The food selection in the main dining room was the worst selection that I have experience in many years of cruising. The buffet (where we wound up most nights) was not much better. The quality of the food was below average. The library had a selection of about 2 dozen books total. There were water leaks through out the ship with areas roped off and buckets underneath. the theater had water pouring in streams from the ceiling. This is the only ship I have experienced with real ice cream only at dinner. The ice cream bar only serves soft serve cones. The Princess Patter was often wrong and incomplete. It would certainly be nice to include a short description of the evening shows. The enrichment program was a joke The theme was considering retirement and what to expect and plan for. Great topic except about 80% of the passengers were already retired. I am sure that someone at Princess has heard about the adverse health effects of second hand smoke. To get to the main entrance of the theater, it is necessary to pass through the smoke filled casino. Doors usually opened 1 hour before theater performances. This is great for handicapped people. Unfortunately, too many times the doors opened 10 to 20 minutes early leaving the handicapped standing and waiting. It was necessary for handicapped to arrive early in order to get suitable seating. Many events were conducted in the Piazza with no seating. They could at least set up some folding chairs. There were too many overlaps of one time performances so you day to choose one or the other. The theater entertainment was just plain poor. Way too much rock and roll for a 70+ average audience. Many people walked out each night. The resident ship performing troop only did 2 shows in 20 days. Actually, one was good. Again, the other was not suitable for the audience. The only positives about this cruise were our cabin attendant and we got to New Zealand. Albeit, after a several hour stop at sea one day to check out new equipment on board. Why couldn't they do this at night when people are sleeping? I am sure that other problems existed, but there were too many to remember. Read Less

we chose this cruise because of where we were going to go. The embarkation went very smoothly We were not familiar with the Golden Princess We had been on another Princess ship before, It was the Caribbean Princess and we had been very satisfied. The cabin was correct. However, we had to brush our teeth with warm water during the whole trip as the ship seemed unable to provide us with cold water even after we complained to our cabin steward. The food was so so in the Horizon Court. It seemed like the same items were on the menu quite often. Although the executive chef was of Indian descent, the Indian food was not very appetizing. I have been to India and the food I ate while in the country was fabulous compared to what was served on the ship. However, the food in the Donatello dinning venue was quite satisfying. We were looked after by two young Filipino men and we have nothing praise to say bout their efficiency, politeness and service it was a pleasure to be served by them night after night.. There was an area near the Vista lounge located aft on deck 7 that smelled quite badly. There was always an odor of excrement whenever we happened to walk by the area. On our last day, I had to use the toilet on deck 7 aft of the Sabatini dinning room and when I lifted the toilet seat it was overflowing with water, papers and excrement. There are no excuses for that state of affair. The shore excursion person for the Papeete visit was extremely rude to me and some of the other customers. The bus was late and we were standing in the sun. When I asked her when we could expect the bus to arrive, she replied that if we did not like to wait all we had to do was give her our tour tickets and leave. I can't comment on the entertainment part of the cruise as i did not attend any of the shows I was traveling with my wife. My wife and I have decided the we will never cruise again on this vessel. Great itinerary, great price, old ship and bad maintenance, menu stunk. Service varied from great to non-existent same for entertainment. This ship is 17+ years old and leaked from everywhere, told everyone it was for sale to P&O in 2020! When maintenance workers chip the old paint off they leave it on the deck, this must be sop as they did the same thing on the Crown. When things didn't work ie; hot tubs you got excuses ....someone else's responsibility. It took 4 ship's officers to fill pool not deck attendants...kind of reminds you of the light bulb joke! Cabin, inside, good as were the cabin stewards . Dining just used Horizon, buffet,2 hrs. too long to eat in main dining room, food and service varied compared to my last Princess cruise. Overall menu was terrible, lot of nites just went to pizza & hamburger restaurants on deck. Lobster nite only in main dining on formal nite so if you don't do formal or main dining room your out of luck so much for same menu in either restaurants. Port stops were good but did not stop in Bora Bora, 2nd transpacific, which really caters to independent travelers, lot of rentals right at pier and my favorite. Of all the ports no where would they rent me a kayak! Someone is leaving money on the table! Hotels said only for customers staying at hotel Read Less

We sailed with another couple to celebrate our 50th. anniversary. The embarking was very fast and efficient. The ship has been left without minor maintenance in preparation to sell it off in the spring of 2020. The condensation from the air conditioning system was leaking throughout the ship including hall ways, public venues and interior cabins. Rust was evident where steel floor plates meet steel wall plates particularly on the promenade deck. The staff were very friendly. The food in the main dining room was good but not outstanding. Disembarking in Sydney, Australia was the best we have ever experienced. The service provided by the Head Waiter at our table on a nightly basis was unprecedented. Ports, food, entertainment, staff, beds, services, equipment, all were 5 stars. Consistency of delivery is the standout and above its peers. After 10+ cruises on many different lines spread over 40 years in all seas and types of ships, I believe Princess Cruises is by far and away the best value for money experience. They take the best of the rest and combine it with 30+ years of their own experience to deliver the most consistently high class delivery of service food and travel experiences. The ability to deliver, process and anticipate travellers' needs is exceptional and remarkable. Doesn't matter which ship or which sea journey you take it seems to me that the expectation is always met, without disappointment, often before you identify fully what you really need. Princess acknowledge and seek out repeat customers and will do all possible to achieve that repeat sale (sail?). Perhaps they could improve by thinking about a new loyalty customer level between Platinum and Elite levels - but apart from that - don't change anything. Read Less

Embarkation: Boarded in Yokohama. Took the Princess transfer from the airport. Confusion at the terminal. Boarded about 12:45 pm. Our luggage arrived very quickly. We went to the dining room for lunch (per recommendation) as it is a lot less crowded than the Horizon Court on embarkation day. Staff will not tell you this. It is open until 1:30 pm. Ship: The ship is just out of dry dock. She looks well but still has some issues. Temperature is uneven on ship. Freezing in some areas especially the Horizon Court. Some plumbing issues. International Cafe is very crowded. 15 minute wait for coffee at times. Vines has very good service. Look for Dragan and Aris. They are exceptional and extremely hardworking. Also have tapas for free such as sushi (on Japan cruise). Sabatini’s was updated on the dry dock and has the new menu. Skywalker’s still there. Cabin: We had a mini suite on the Dolphin deck. The new Princess beds are very nice. The sofa in our cabin also looked new. Carpet in good shape. The first day we only had hot water but a plumber was sent to fix this. Flat screen TV’s installed in cabins but no on demand movies. Toilet not functioning one evening but fixed promptly. Talked to people on our deck who were in staterooms that were really cold. Plumbing issues for others. Dining: This was the biggest area of contention for us. A lot of people unhappy the first night. There was a problem with our table which I won’t go into. It was resolved somewhat the next day. We had long waits between courses and have noticed this since club class dining was introduced. Food quality in dining room has gone downhill in my opinion. I think sometimes the Horizon Grill is a better choice. No, you won’t go hungry but it is about a decline in quality. Some chicken dishes such as coq au vin had some very grizzly meat and steak Diane needed a hatchet. The best meal we had in the dining room was chateaubriand. Our wait staff were very nice. Entertainment: Princess singers and dancers put on a good show. Enjoyed enrichment lectures. For those going to Alaska we had some very good programs. I think the park rangers come on in Alaska and do an excellent job. We disembarked in Whittier and if you have the chance to drive from Whittier to Anchorage it is truly beautiful. General comments: Do not care for the time change of one hour forward at noon instead of during the night. Did not enjoy that so many people were coughing on the ship. I know that the flu was onboard from someone that caught it. There really is not much that Princess can do. It’s an honor system signing a form that you are not sick and some people have paid and are just going to go. There are washbasins on the entries to Horizon Court as well as purell. We both came back with colds. We went to Alaska on the Golden in 2014. I think she is a fine ship if they iron out the plumbing and temperature controls problems. If you have an Alaskan cruise coming up you should be fine. Issues like the crowding in the International Cafe and Piazza should not be such a problem on a 7 day cruise. We were on for 16 days and seven of these days were at sea. I very much enjoy that the Golden still has Skywalkers which is great for Alaska and also some very nice staff. We enjoyed seeing Japan and this was a good way to do it. Read Less

Food has gone down hill on Princess. MDR short staffed and thus very slow poor service. Buffet breakfast the same everyday. Fish in almost every dish. Worst guest entertainment we've ever seen. Like HS trying new acts for the first time. The rear of ship had a strong bathroom stench the entire cruise. It wafted into the showroom and casino. Tapping noise in the wall of our room all night. They heard it but couldn't fix it at night because no crew was working then. Couldn't fix it during the day at port, because we were stopped and no noise. No refund offered. Heavy accents shouldn't be in positions of communication, yet they are. Service staff always friendly and wonderful as on every cruise. The sights of Alaska outweigh many of the discomforts. Sorry to be so negative, but just saying how wonderful a cruise is, won't get this stuff attended to will it? Read Less

This was our Ninth Princess Cruise and where very disappointed. This ship just got out of dry dock approximately 16 days prior to us getting on. Embarkation slow and confusing, no line for Elite or Platinum cruisers. Ship was very tired looking, frayed and stained carpets. Multiple water leaks all over ship with buckets collecting water, fans trying to dry the wet carpets. Presence of trades men doing repairs all over ship. Dining experience in Sabatinis was very disappointing, food poor, service bad. Main dining room was OK. Cabin Stewart was excellent, very attentive, and very apologetic for all the problems on the ship. We found some of the shore excursions very expense for what was included. We felt something should of been said from management about ship's poor condition and compensation made to the passengers. We have always enjoyed Princess Cruise line, but will now be looking at other lines more seriously in the future. Read Less

I have been on many Princess Cruises and thought this would be an interesting one - 5 ports in Japan, S Korea and then across the Bering Sea to Whittier Alaska - truly a trip of a lifetime. I flew into Japan a week early and enjoyed touring around. I am a solo senior female and felt very safe at all times and found it fairly easy to get around. Boarding in Yokohama is very different. You have to get a number and wait until you are called to check in. That took some time and some people were very upset at the way this was done but as it would turn out "Japan has a unique way of doing things" Japanese ports all great. Only exception, Osaka, Port itself was absolutely fabulous but as we were going to S Korea next the ship had to bring the passenger count down to 0 before leaving the country. Unfortunately, 2 passengers didn't care about the 2500 other passengers waiting to get back on and it took Princess over an hour to locate this couple in their locked room and force them out and off the ship. Believe me, many wanted to know who they were as standing in a hot room for over an hour waiting to get back on the ship was awful. I think Princess could have found these people a lot sooner and gotten things moving faster but I waited an hour and many people waited longer. The backlog wasnt cleared for a long time. There were quite a few water leaks from ceilings all over the ship and many buckets were out catching drips. Some people had to be moved to other cabins. The worst incident was when we were in the middle of the Bering Sea and there was commotion after 1am. Captain came on speaker into room at 1:45am telling us there was an incident with the engine but that the ship was navigable and we would be continuing to Alaska. As this was a particulary rough night at sea it did not make for a comfortable sleep and many people were nervous after this. I am not sure what the actual issue was. It would have been better to know the truth from the Captain rather than worrying the rest of the trip. Food was typical Princess menus, very oversalted. Service in Dining room always excellent. Menu for lunch in dining room was better than dinner in my opinion Alaska Sue gave several great talks interspersed with personal photos and experiences. I did not enjoy the other speakers. Cruise director's staff did a great job but 7 sea days is hard to keep everyone entertained. Read Less

A promotional price was to hard to pass by, and it was our 2nd time on this ship. There were 4 of us in an internal stateroom. The room was clean, and our steward Michael attended to our needs. We tipped him at the end of our cruise. Getting on and off was a breeze. The Hortizon buffet was average to good, as usual. The desserts were great, sugarfree and gluten free was also catered for. There was no welcome entertainment on the main deck, nor an invite to cocktails. Entertainment was average to good, depending how you view it. Some dishes in the Anytime Dining was over cooked, and had to be returned for a new cooked dish. The final night at the anytime Dining was the same again, a parade of chefs, waitress, and waiters bringing out the Alaska dessert. Activities were the same as usual with limited time frames. Lots of families and oldies, but still good for anyone, but not for the idiots who wants to party hard. Lack of song choices - no ABBA or Adele. The hosts could provide more fun to karaoke, just sing and get off. Not sure if I’ll ever return to this ship, it was very laidback and lacked something. This was a cheap 4 day jaunt across the Tasma from Auckland to Sydney. We had travelled on the Golden 2 years ago and enjoyed ourselves so was keen to see what it was like again. Overall the cruise was good with great service and still a reasonably good standard of food throughout the ship. The entertainment particularly the production show was very good and very professional. We went up to the drinks for elite passengers the first night and was bitterly dissappointed with the level of service as the bar was very quiet but we waited 15 mins for a drink and then sat for a good 30 mins again with dirty plates and empty glasses on our tables before we had to get up and find a waiter to serve us and even then when they brought our drinks back we had to ask them to clear the table as they were about to walk away. We took it up with the bar manager later that evening and had much better service from then on, We all thought considering we were elite passengers they would have made sure we were looked after right from day one. Also the cabin steward stuck his head in the door on the first evening and we never saw him again for the rest of the cruise and didn't bring us any bathrobes which was difficult when room service breakfast arrived. Only a few niggles but overall Princess are great value for money and far better than a lot of the other mid range products. Our friends we were travelling with had not travelled with princess before and also booked a obstructed view cabin but got upgraded to a mini suite which we thought lucky them but at The same time thinking that princess would upgrade their elite passengers first as it makes you wonder why the loyalty program is there. Our cabin E517 had almost a full ocean view so would reccomend. Read Less

We decided to do this small cruise as a perfect relax to break what has been a very busy year. Embarkation was a breeze as this was a stop on a longer cruise so only about 200 got on at the same time. From Customs to the ship in under 10 mins. We took a cruise on the Emerald earlier in the year and although the ships were approx. the same size, the Golden seemed to have far more space and felt perfectly limited for a great passenger experience. Did not really go to any of the entertainment save the daily trivia, but did venture out and sadly went to the Blues Brothers show which was pretty average. Friendly staff and definitely the best food we have encountered on a Princess ship. I would highly recommend this ship and will be looking out for another adventure on her in the near future. We traveled from Melbourne to Sydney as a quick getaway. The ship was in good order and everything went very smoothly. I did find that the crew had a habit of leaving some "Crew Access" doors open occasionally which led me to think that the crew lacks a little discipline. This was our first cruise with Princess and it was unusual for us to see the variety of countries of origin of the staff as we are used to a high level of Asian staff. We really did not have anything to complain about except that the promenade deck was the place where people were allowed to smoke and if you wanted to walk around the ship for a little exercise you had to walk thru the cloud of smoke. The promenade deck was not the only place that smokers could indulge, but every time we walked in that area there was quite a few people smoking. The only other complaint was that the fwd part of the promenade deck which is actually Deck 7.5 was closed more often than it was open. The fwd section is the ideal place to get a protected view of the fwd view of the ships progress but was continuously closed. Read Less
