We have cruised with Costa before and had enjoyable trips, however not this one! In a nutshell they appear to be cruising with economy. We boarded at Genoa after a coach transfer from Milan - all good. We were in cabin 4082 which smelt of drains! No amount of cleaning resolved the issue and eventually after two days and regular trips to guest services complaining we were begrudgingly moved to another cabin. Second cabin 5082 was fine, and significantly less mechanical noise which was a blessing. Cleaned efficiently. Also a new experience for us was only four other English speaking passengers on the ship, which was also fine. Food was OK, and in some ways I approve of the relatively short opening times for the buffet and the restaurant. However, food often not hot! We did return a couple of courses that were cold or inedible. Coffee only available at certain times unless purchased. Open dining means there can be a scramble for tables. Breakfast is continental with pastries, cold meats, etc, a hot option being available only in the restaurant The same food is served in both restaurants. The staff are friendly, but appear to be overworked. Very expensive alcoholic and soft drinks. Entertainment in the theatre again was OK, but I guess Costa have to entertain multiple nationalities. Highlight was probably the crew night! The young animations team were enthusiastic though. We did not take any trips as they are hugely expensive for what they are, often a coach trip and a stroll is €50 each. We were asked to pay €10 each for a bus to the town centre, a 10 minute walk! Communication from the Costa management is truly awful. There are sometimes issues during a cruise which result in a change to itinerary but you should tell your guests. A garbled PA announcement is insufficient. Costa should add this information to the daily newsletter, a sign near guest services, or on the TV service. It cannot be that difficult. The ports of call were as expected. We would travel with Costa again, but not on the Classica. Read Less
